    The article discusses the semiotics of Prague cemeteries as well as their role in Czech culture against the backdrop of the cultural role of cemeteries in Central Europe. Prague cemeteries are silent as their presence in the memory and life of Czechs is much less noticeable than one would have assumed it should be as resulting from the 19th century patriotic concepts which accompanied the establishment of national cemetery, the magnifi cence of funeral ceremonies of the time and the signifi cance of necropolises cultural heritage. The Czech way of commemorating the dead personages of cultural merit is naming after them public institutions rather than visiting the graveyard and perceiving thecemetery as an institution of memorialising national history. The refl ection on the cultural role of Prague cemeteries is more often present in Czech literary works than in scientific studies on Czech culture. This peculiar indifference is characteritic of Czech mentality, even though the determining factors to create Prague cemetery did not distinguish Czechs from the nations of Central Europe – national revival and national mythology together with the change in perceiving the cemetery in the urban organism.

    Dušan Mitana’s book My Home Cemetery (Môj rodný cintorín, 2000) is centred on banal scenes from everyday life that could happen in any Slovak village in the 1960s, such as family relations, village gossips, political and theological disputes in pubs and at home, building homes, working in a local cooperative, supporting a local football team, etc. However, the narration denies any similarity with Realism. Instead, the story is bizarre, hyperbolized, and grotesque; very much along the tradition of Magic Realism. Mitana’s writing is Postmodern; he uses different languages, genres, approaches and quotations in his book. Cemetery in Mitana’s story is both space and place; it is both pars and totum; it is one (real/fictional) cemetery and entire Slovakia. Even though this cemetery is situated on the outskirts of the village, it is the centre (navel); its eccentric location is a song of human disrespect towards eternity. Besides being the centre, the cemetery is also a middle world where reality meets fi ction, banal meets high, fl esh meets spirit, Christianity meets paganism, banal everyday routines mix with dreams, visions and prophecies, and those who are alive coexist happily with those who are dead. It is also a nodal point between past and (Messianic) future, since it is the home place of the writer himself, and this writer is a Slovak writer. Whereas the writer has a mission to revive the dead by weaving stories about them, his nation’s mission is to spread the Slovak word in the world. In this way, Mitana’s book also mocks manifestations of Slovak nationalism in the 1990s, which was still partially using concepts and rhetoric of Romantic Messianism.

    The present article describes and examines the lexical tissue of the city of Kaunas related to the pagan past of the Balts – Prussians and Lithuanians. The mythonyms appear basically in three periods of the city’s existence: in the interwar period, at the turn of the 1990s and after 2004, i.e. at critical and borderline moments, when emphasising individuality, exposing identity and referring to its sources was of utmost importance. The most interesting phenomena took place in the interwar period, when by placing in the city tissue numerous objects with names borrowed from Baltic mythology, collective memory was clearly shaped and mobilised in the space previously marked by “strangers” – Imperial Russia and the German Empire. In this way, this space was effectively tamed. The importance of this process is evidenced by dozens of names associated with the pagan Balts (Kaunas is a phenomenon in this respect on the map of Lithuania), which were given in the interwar period mostly to streets and buildings located, importantly, in the then very centre of the city. In the other two periods, mythonyms were not so popular anymore: the names of deities and other creatures historically worshiped by Lithuanians were usually given to streets far away from the city centre, often in newly created districts. Thanks to this, however, Kaunas has a clearly drawn identity that spreads from the centre towards the suburbs. A place that is thoroughly permeated with the “spirit of Lithuanianness” is the Unity Square (Lith. Vienybės aikštė), scrupulously cleansed of the traces of the aforementioned dependencies, whose important point is an inconspicuous dwarf who watches over the symbolic spring of the Lithuanian nation. It is this mythonymic element that is treated with special attention in this article, and on its example, a detailed cultural analysis of the city’s space is proposed. It should be emphasised that in Kaunas the mythonyms form a thought-out, multi-layered structure, as if a separate city that is inaccessible and foreign to the strangers. The study discusses individual collections and elements of this extensive web of meanings, deliberately created by town planners and urban designers, the basis of which is the historical experience of Kaunas and Lithuania.
    Celem artykułu jest opis i analiza tkanki nazewniczej Kowna, związanej z pogańską przeszłością Bałtów – Prusów i Litwinów. Mitonimy pojawiają się zasadniczo w trzech okresach istnienia miasta: w międzywojniu, na przełomie lat 80. i 90. oraz po roku 2004, a więc w momentach przełomowych, granicznych, kiedy podkreślanie odrębności, eksponowanie tożsamości i sięganie do jej źródeł ma niepoślednie znaczenie. Najbardziej interesujące zjawiska zachodzą w okresie międzywojennym, kiedy to poprzez umieszczanie w tkance miasta licznych obiektów o nazwach zapożyczonych z mitologii bałtyckiej wyraźnie kształtowano i mobilizowano zbiorową pamięć w przestrzeni naznaczonej wcześniej przez „obcych” – Cesarstwo Rosyjskie i Cesarstwo Niemieckie. W taki też sposób skutecznie tę przestrzeń oswajano. O randze tego procesu świadczą dziesiątki nazw powiązanych z pogańskimi Bałtami (Kowno jest pod tym względem ewenementem na mapie Litwy), które nadano w międzywojniu w przeważającej większości ulicom i innym obiektom, mieszczącym się, co ważne, w ówczesnym ścisłym centrum miasta. W pozostałych dwóch okresach mitonimy nie są już tak popularne, imionami bóstw i innych istot czczonych dawniej przez Litwinów nazywa się przeważnie ulice znacznie oddalonych od śródmieścia dzielnic, często nowo utworzonych. Dzięki temu jednak Kowno zyskuje wyraźnie nakreśloną tożsamość, która promieniuje od centrum w stronę przedmieść. Miejscem na wskroś przenikniętym „duchem litewskości” jest oczyszczony skrupulatnie ze śladów wspomnianych zależności Plac Jedności (lit. Vienybės aikštė), którego ważny punkt stanowi niepozorny, czuwający przy symbolicznym źródle narodu litewskiego krasnoludek. Ten właśnie element mitonimiczny potraktowany został ze szczególną uwagą, a na jego przykładzie dokonano szczegółowej analizy kulturoznawczej przestrzeni miasta. Należy podkreślić, że w Kownie mitonimy układają się w przemyślaną, wielowątkową strukturę, można by rzec – miasto osobne, które dla przybysza może być niedostępne i obce. Artykuł omawia poszczególne zbiory i elementy tej rozbudowanej, z rozmysłem przez urbanistów i planistów utworzonej siatki znaczeń, której osnowę stanowi historyczne doświadczenie Kowna i Litwy.

    В статье анализируется проблема неоднозначности термина «окраины - кресы» в польском языке и культуре. Титульные «окраины» означают как географическую область (не полностью определенную и изменяемую по историческим причинам, что вызывает дополнительные семантические сложности), так и область эмоций: построение пограничной мифологии, чувство ностальгии, сантиментов и негодования. Понятие «кресовая литература» столь же неоднозначно, как и в случае слова «кресы». В статье представлена репрезентативная подборка различных примеров текстов, которые могут быть включены в эту группу. Последняя часть текста посвящена методологическим проблемам и спорам, обозначенным исследователями проблемы «кресов» в польской культуре.

    The aim of this article is to reflect on the categories of the Bulgarian nation as well as the “Bulgarian soul” in the teachings of Peter Deunov. These categories are presented in the context of such notions as evolution, race and human progress. The paper also attempts to denote the transfer of certain Western ideas and the nature of their reception in Bulgaria. Two collections of homilies by Beinsa Douno have been subjected to thorough analysis – The Bulgarian soul (Българската душа) and Bulgarians (Българите). These texts constitute a synthesis of dispersed ideas and views that were espoused by Deunov over different periods of time, and which pertain to the issues in question. The concepts of the Bulgarian nation and “Bulgarian soul” that appear in Beinsa Douno’s teachings may be interpreted as an attempt to create an original hermetic national mythology. Its embedment in a scientific context (reference to such notions as race, evolution and human progress) was supposed to render it – according to Deunov’s intention – undeniable truth rooted in empiricism.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest refleksja nad kategorią narodu bułgarskiego i ,,bułgarskiej duszy” w ,,nauce” Petyra Dynowa. Kategorie te zostaną przedstawione w perspektywie takich pojęć jak ewolucja, rasa i postęp. Tekst jest jednocześnie próbą wskazania na przepływ niektórych zachodnich idei oraz specyfikę ich bułgarskiej recepcji. Analizie zostały poddane dwa zbiory homilii Beinsa Duno – Bułgarska dusza (Българската душа) oraz Bułgarzy (Българите). Teksty te stanowią syntezę rozproszonych i wygłaszanych w różnym okresie poglądów Dynowa na interesujące mnie kwestie. Pojawiające się w ,,nauce” Beinsa Duno koncepcje narodu bułgarskiego i ,,bułgarskiej duszy” można interpretować jako próbę stworzenia oryginalnej hermetycznej mitologii narodowej. Mitologia ta, dzięki osadzeniu jej w kontekście naukowym (odwołania do takich kategorii jak rasa, ewolucja i postęp), miała stać się – zgodnie z zamysłem Dynowa – niepodważalną, zakorzenioną w empirii prawdą.
