Opis:
Analysis of bone strength in radiographic images is an important component of estimation of bone quality in diseases such as osteoporosis. Conventional radiographic femur bone images are used to analyze its architecture using bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition method. Surface interpolation of local maxima and minima points of an image is a crucial part of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition method and the choice of appropriate interpolation depends on specific structure of the problem. In this work, two interpolation methods of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition are analyzed to characterize the trabecular femur bone architecture of radiographic images. The trabecular bone regions of normal and osteoporotic femur bone images (N = 40) recorded under standard condition are used for this study. The compressive and tensile strength regions of the images are delineated using pre-processing procedures. The delineated images are decomposed into their corresponding intrinsic mode functions using interpolation methods such as Radial basis function multiquadratic and hierarchical b-spline techniques. Results show that bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition analyses using both interpolations are able to represent architectural variations of femur bone radiographic images. As the strength of the bone depends on architectural variation in addition to bone mass, this study seems to be clinically useful.

Opis:
In a randomized study 50 women, aged 51.7±2.8 years, suffering from primary osteoarthrosis (OA), were divided into two, equal groups (I, II). The women were employed in garment industry in contract work system. They were working in compulsory, mainly standing position. The women complained of backache of the lumbar region continuing for the minimum 5 years. During the study, bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine was assessed twice with the densitometry DEXA method (Lunar Corporation equipment). Before treatment, structural changes in the lumbosacral spine were revealed using a CT Simens Sonata Plus 4. One energy technique (SEQCT) was applied. Concentrations of bone-forming markers in serum were measured three times: before treatment and 3 and 12 months afterwards. The concentration of acid phosphatase in serum was assessed by the enzymatic method according to Hitachi. The concentrations of osteocalcin and procolagen were radoimmunologically assessed by means of DRG Company – sets and concentration basal prolactin (PRL) before treatment radioimmunoassy kits produced by bioMerieux. In the first stage of the treatment, the women in the first group received placebo for three months. Slow Mag B6 was administered for three months to the women in the second group. In the second stage of the treatment, the women in both groups received 21-day therapeutic cycles of modified transdermal hormonal replacement therapy. Additionally, bromocriptine (2.5 mg per day) and Slow Mag B6 (160 mg per day) were administered orally. The cycles repeated at a 7-day interval. During the interval, withdrawal bleeding occurred. The results were statistically assessed by means of computerized programme package Statistica PL, version 5. It was stated that in 60% of women suffering from primary OA the basal concentration of prolactin in serum in was elevated above 25 ng/ml; in 25% women it was on the border level, and in 15% of the patients it was below the lower limit of the normal values. The combined treatment in women suffering from OA caused increase in bone-forming markers and decrease in pathological resorption processes of mineralization of the vertebral bodies. After 12 months of the therapy, resorption in the lumbar spine was diminished compared to the initial values, before the treatment. These changes were significant in L3/L4 vertebral bodies (p<0.05).
Stężenie kostnej fosfatazy zasadowej oznaczono enzymatycznie, osteokalcyny i prokolagenu radioimmunologicznie zestawami firmy DRG. Podstawową prolaktynę (PRL) oznaczono przed leczeniem radioimmunologicznie zestawem bioMerieux. Kobiety z grupy I w pierwszym etapie leczenia przez 3 miesiące otrzymywały placebo, a w grupie II doustnie Slow Mag B6 w dawce 160 mg/24 h. Natomiast w drugim etapie kobiety z obu grup otrzymywały w 21-dniowym cyklu terapeutycznym zmodyfikowaną, przezskórną hormonoterapię zastępczą, bromokryptynę doustnie w dawce 2,5 mg/24 h i Slow Mag B6 w dawce 160 mg/24 h z przerwą 7-dniową w celu wystąpienia krwawienia. Analizy statystyczne z uzyskanych wyników przeprowadzono za pomocą pakietu Statistica PL, wersja 5. Stężenie prolaktyny podstawowej u 60% kobiet z OA wynosiło powyżej normy 25 ng/ml, u 25% kobiet górna granica normy, a u 15% kobiet poniżej dolnej granicy normy.

Introduction. The objective of the study was to assess dietary calcium intake in the Polish population and its influence on selected parameters of bone tissue. Materials and method. 1,129 osteoporosis treatment–naive subjects, aged 20–80 years, randomly selected, were involved in the study. Bone status was established using densitometry of spine and hip and quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus. Dietary calcium intake was calculated according to data gathered in a questionnaire. Results. Median calcium intake was 746 mg; 72% of subjects had calcium intake below the recommended dose. Calcium intake correlated negatively with age (r = -0.15; p<0.001) and positively with BMD in the spine (r = 0.06; p<0.05) and in the femoral neck (r = 0.07; p < 0.05). In subjects with the lowest calcium intake, a significantly lower femoral neck BMD and heel stiffness was noticed than in subjects with the highest calcium intake. However, multiple regression analysis showed that dietary calcium was not a predictor of low BMD, both in the hip and spine, as well as of bone stiffness in contrast to age, low BMI and female gender (p<0.0001). In all factors regression analysis, a weak influence of calcium intake on BMD was shown only in the subgroup of premenopausal women (β = 0.1; p<0.05). Conclusions. In most subjects, dietary calcium intake was below the recommended dose; however, its influence on bone seems to be weak, except for persons with the greatest deficiency of dietary calcium and the subgroup of premenopausal women.

Mango ginger (MG) has antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential protective role of MG and the mechanisms against methotrexate (MTX) induced bone damage in rats. A total of 28 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: i) control; ii) MG, rats were treated orally with 50 mg/kg/day of MG, iii) MTX, rats were injected with 0.75 mg/kg of MTX from 8th to 12th day for 5 days and iv) MTX+MG group, rats were treated with 50 mg/kg/day of MG and injected with MTX from 8th to 12th day for 5 days. MTX pretreatment increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels and aminotransferase enzyme activities, while tibia osteocalcin levels and bone mineral density (BMD) decreased (p < 0.001). MG pretreatment markedly attenuated aminotransferases activities and creatinine levels and increased tibia osteocalcin levels and femur BMD in the MTX + MG groups. MTX treatment increased levels of bone nuclear factor kappa beta ligand receptor-activator (RANKL), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and decreased the bone osteoprotegerin (OPG) and type1 collagen levels (p < 0.001). The effect of MG treatment on RANKL, IL-6, TNF-α, OPG and type1 collagen levels induced by MTX was observed actual effects (p < 0.05). Similarly, the protective effect of MG against MTX was confirmed by histological examination. In conclusion, MG pretreatment reduced the negative effects of MTX on bone damage by improving BMD and modulation of RANKL, IL-6, TNF-α, OPG and type1 collagen expressions in the rats.

The influence of TSH on bones is still vastly unknown and the information that is known is considered controversial. This important relationship has not been studied in detail. The aim of our research was to assess the correlation between TSH, thyroid hormone and bone mineral density in children measured by DXA scanning. Our study group included 36 children (16 girls and 20 boys) mean age 12.9 š 3.3 years. Basic anthropometrical measurements were performed (height, weight, body mass index-BMI), in all subjects. Blood was collected and measured for TSH and FT4. Bone mineral density of lumbar spine (L2-L4 BMD) and total body (Total Body BMD) were measured by DXA and expressed as bone mineral content (BMC [g]) and bone mineral density (BMD [g/cm2]). BMD Z-Score was also calculated. Correlation between the parameters obtained by DXA and anthropometrical data, TSH and thyroid hormone concentration were calculated. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between height, weight and BMI and BMD which was calculated. Weight and BMI also had a statically significant correlation with Z-Score and total bone mineral content (BMC – expressed in grams). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between TSH level and Z-Score for both L2-L4 lumbar spine and for total body. TSH did not correlate significantly with BMD [g/cm2] and BMC [g]. FT4 was negatively and significantly correlated with Z-Score for both L2-L4 lumbar spine and for total body. There was also no significant correlation between FT4 and BMD [g/cm2] and BMC [g]. Conclusion: 1. Thyroid stimulating-hormone (TSH) appears to be associated with maintenance of bone mineral density in children. 2. BMD Z-Score especially from L2-L4 lumbar spine assessed by DXA scanning is correlated best with hormonal and biochemical factors potentially influencing bone mineralization in children.

Opis:
In order to explain the effect of air entraining admixture (AEA) and the type of cement on the properties of fresh mortar, the following tests were carried: bulk density, flaw and air content of 20 air entrained mortars and 20 nan air entrained mortars made of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and blended Portland cements: blast furnace slag (BSF) - limestone powder (LP), fly ash - limestone, fly ash (FA) and (BFS) cement. It has been found that the modern anionic AEAs from the group of alkyl sulfates are much more efficient and active than traditional ones i.e. sodium abietate. It is difficult to entrain air into mortars with cement of various types to the same content of air. This requires to carry out a number of tests to determine the appropriate amounts of AEA. The air entrainment of LP cement mortar does not significantly change its flow. The air entrainment of BSF and FA cement mortars increases their workability. The lowest content of air was stated in non-air-entrained mortars with FA cement, the highest air content was observed in BFS cement mortars. According to the results the bulk density of mortars is inversely proportional to the amount of air entrained.

Purpose: The study aimed to investigate a relationship between the mineral content of the human trabecular bone and parameters determined from compression fatigue tests at stepwiseincreasing amplitude. Methods: Mineral content of the trabecular bone was estimated as ash density and bone mineral density values. The relationship between the ash density, bone mineral density and factors obtained from fatigue test: fatigue life, cumulative elastic energy and cumulative energy of dissipation was determined. Results: The results from the measurements of ash density and bone mineral density show good correlation with the fatigue test results. The relationship was estimated based on the correlation coefficient R within 0.74-0.79 for the particular pairs of factors. Conclusions: The study shows that the ash density and the bone mineral density are good predictors to estimate the fatigue life of trabecular bone. The study also validates the applicability of the tests at stepwise-increasing amplitude in determining the mechanical properties of trabecular bone.

Opis:
The composition of heavy-mineral assemblages is one of the main textural features of sediments because they can have significant value for the interpretation of, among others, their depositional environment, their depositional processes, and their stratigraphic position. Distinctive features of heavy minerals include their resistance to chemical weathering and mechanical abrasion, their habit, and their density. These parameters are the most widely used in the heavy-mineral research of Quaternary deposits in Poland, as well as in such research in other countries conducted by Polish scientists. Several other heavy-mineral parameters can also be used in various types of interpretation. It is discussed whether heavy-mineral analysis is decisive in the evaluation of deposits or whether it plays mainly a role that may support evidence obtained by other types of analysis. The attention is mainly devoted to transparent heavy minerals; the significance of opaque heavy minerals for interpretational purposes is only mentioned.

Interactions between cells of the immune system and cells of bone tissue are reported for over 40 years. Despite the passage of time, relatively little about them is mentioned in Polish literature and the term osteoimmunology is practically not used. The purpose of this article is an attempt to outline shortly current knowledge in this field, with particular attention paid to regulation of bone tissue metabolism linked to the existence of the kidney-bone-gut axis.. Homeostasis of both the level of minerals in the blood plasma and the mineral density of the bone is maintained as a result of dynamic changes in the activity of osteoblasts, osteoklasts and osteocytes, being one of the final forms of maturing osteoblasts, actively regulating these processes. The balance between the activities of these cells is regulated by, inter alia, hormones and cytokines as well as direct contact with immune cells. These factors affect the level of mineral release and deposition by osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively.

Opis:
Purpose: Bone drilling is a major part of orthopaedic surgery performed during the internal fixation of fractured bones. At present, information related to drilling force, drilling torque, rate of drill-bit penetration and drill-bit rotational speed is not available to orthopaedic surgeons, clinicians and researchers as bone drilling is performed manually. Methods: This study demonstrates that bone drilling force data if recorded in-vivo, during the repair of bone fractures, can provide information about the quality of the bone. To understand the variability and anisotropic behaviour of cortical bone tissue, specimens cut from three anatomic positions of pig and bovine were investigated at the same drilling speed and feed rate. Results: The experimental results showed that the drilling force does not only vary from one animal bone to another, but also vary within the same bone due to its changing microstructure. Drilling force does not give a direct indication of bone quality; therefore it has been correlated with screw pull-out force to provide a realistic estimation of the bone quality. A significantly high value of correlation (r 2 = 0.93 for pig bones and r 2 = 0.88 for bovine bones) between maximum drilling force and normalised screw pull-out strength was found. Conclusions: The results show that drilling data can be used to indicate bone quality during orthopaedic surgery.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the relation between body composition and body mass index (BMI) to bone mineral density (BMD) in college American football players. Methods: A total of 90 players (22.44 + 1.71 years old) from the major college football league in Mexico participated. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) equipment was used, in which the values of BMI, fat mass, lean mass, total mass and BMD were obtained. Findings: Players who had higher BMI got higher BMD. The strongest significant positive correlations found were lean mass, body weight, and BMI with BMD of the arms, legs, trunk, and spine. Conclusions: Most of the players analyzed had problems of excess weight and obesity, however, those who had a higher BMI such as obesity type I, II and III had also higher BMD than those with excess weight and normal weight, with significant differences in the regions of arms, legs, spine and total body.

Opis:
Introduction. Data concerning the relationship between body fat and BMD are equivocal since both positive and negative effects have been noted. Recently, the index of fat mass (IFM) representing subjects with different body fat and similar lean mass and index of lean mass (ILM) representing subjects with different lean body mass and similar body fat, have been used to evaluate body composition effect on BMD in middle-aged women. This study aimed at determination of ILM and IFM association with BMD in young men and women. Materials and methods. A total of 212 university students of Public Health (125 women and 87 men) participated in the study. Body composition was determined by the bioelectrical impedance method (BIA) using BC 418 MA equipment (Tanita Co., Japan). Fat mass and fat free mass were used to calculate ILM and IFM. Bone mineral density was measured on the wrist of the non-dominant hand using the DEXA method and EXA 3000 equipment (HFS Ltd., Korea). BMD was evaluated using Z-score, with values lower than -2.0 indicating inadequate BMD for subject chronological age. Results. Exclusively in women, IFM was markedly and positively correlated with Z-score (r=0.366, P<0.001). In both genders, a significant relationship was found between ILM and Z-scores (r=0.420; p<0.001 and r=0.220; p<0.02 in men and women, respectively). Women with lower than median IFM but similar ILM, were characterized by significantly lower Z-scores vs. women with higher IFM (-1.016 vs. -0.512; p<0.001). Irrespective of gender, participants with higher ILM but similar IFM, were characterized by markedly higher Z-score vs. their counterparts with low ILM. Conclusions. The use of IFM and ILM in the present study, allowed the observation that in young adults lean body mass was associated with BMD, regardless of gender, while fat mass is significant for bone mineral density only in women.
