Opis:: Projects for the storage of municipal waste involve systems of successive safety barriers consisting at least of a geomembrane and a natural mineral layer. “Poznań Clay” are among materials which can be used as a mineral layer. In this paper mineral layers standards from different countries are described. Studies of the important properties of “Poznań Clay” such as hydraulic conductivity, mineral composition, and void ratio are presented. Samples with undisturbed and disturbed structure were examined. Differences between properties of these samples are negligible.

Opis:: Storage is one of the most widely applied methods of neutralisation of wastes, prevailing over thermal, chemical and biological treatment. Waste disposal site must be harm-less for the natural environment and for the human’s life and health. Its sealing must be reliable. However, the recently used synthetic liners are not sufficient. Experiments showed that the proper protection of the natural environment against the interaction with wastes may be achieved by using naturally occurring grounds, or by composing artificial mineral sealing barriers. The deposits to be used a as a barrier must have specific characteristics required by the binding regulations. On the example of the clays from the pit in Budy Mszczonowskie, the paper presents the range of investigations needed to evaluate applicability of the Neogene expansive soils as the sealing barriers.

Opis:: W artykule, w nawiązaniu do wymagań dotyczących lokalizacji budowy, eksploatacji i zamknięcia, jakim powinny odpowiadać poszczególne składowiska odpadów, przedstawiono tok postępowania istotny dla wstępnego określenia przydatności różnych surowców ilastych do formowania mineralnych barier izolacyjnych. Omówiono zakres: prac studialnych, badań i obserwacji terenowych z poborem próbek do badań laboratoryjnych, badań laboratoryjnych cech identyfikacyjnych istotnych do formowania barier mineralnych oraz prac kameralnych prowadzących do uporządkowania wyników badań terenowych i laboratoryjnych, a także wstępnej oceny przydatności. W artykule przedstawiono kartę informacyjną o przydatności surowca mineralnego do uszczelnienia składowiska odpadów. Karta zawiera informacje o złożu, dokumentację kartograficzną i fotograficzną oraz wyniki badań właściwości surowca. Jednolite przedstawianie danych pomocne będzie przy tworzeniu bazy danych geologicznych. Zakres bazy danych powinien umożliwić wybór materiałów ilastych ze względu na ich właściwości oraz aspekty ekonomiczne i środowiskowe.
The procedure important for preliminary assessment of deposits of cohesive soils regarding usability as material for construction of mineral sealing barriers is presented, referring to requirements concerning location, exploitation and decomissioning of waste dumps. Proposed scope of work study, research and fieldwork with sampling, laboratory studies to measure identification parameters important for mineral barrier construction, and interpreting the field and laboratory data to preliminarily assess the value of a given resource. The information card of suitability of mineral raw material for sealing of landfills is described. It contains information about deposit, cartographic and photographic documentations, and test results of raw material. Uniformly collected data will be useful by preparation of geological data base, which extent should assure the proper selection of clayey raw materials concerning properties, economical and environmental aspects.

Opis:: The paper presents results regarding limitations (barriers) in mineral deposit prospecting (exploration) in Europe. Five potential barriers have been identified, which require further reflection to find proper solutions: 1) existing land use, including forms of nature conservation, residential, agricultural or areas used for recreational activities; 2) the costs of exploration and mining activities; 3) public perceptions and negative attitudes towards the exploration andminingindustry;4)thesustainabilityandenvironment;5)governancestructures and regulatory and processes. Analysis of mining conflicts indicates that improving the image of mining is a priority. The economic security of our country and Europe depends on it. It seems crucial to identify correctly the sources and mechanism of conflicts on the social-political-environmental background. While working out the strategy of housing the image of mining, one should pay attention to benefits for the region and the country from obtaining raw materials, and new values of natural environment elements: landscape and wildlife habitat, showing what the world would look like without raw materials, educating society from the youngest age.

Opis:: Sorption properties of fine-grain mixtures of mineral waste proposed for construction of separation screens in landfill sites have been examined. The removal of heavy metals by the mixtures analysed was evaluated by the static batch method. It was found that they characterize by high ability to remove heavy metals at the level of over 99%, even with high contents of these elements. The sorption parameters have been determined based on the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The alkaline character of some components of mixtures provides stabilization of pH, preventing removal of heavy metals to the environment in response to contact a barrier with acid solutions.
