Opis:
Background: The current research brings up the perspective of security-critical information systems in shared parameter databases in the context of processing sensitive data at Finnish Naval Warfare Centre. It refers to the environment of isolated military war gaming simulation and modeling systems. The research problem is: How to make an optimal solution for data distribution in different military war gaming simulation and modeling software? Objectives: The objective is to create a single shared database usable with different detail level software, e.g. high-level scenario simulation, technical system-of-system simulations, and system-level physical simulations. Methods: The methods are modeling, simulation and operation analysis. The approach is inductive, the strategy is a qualitative case study and the data collection was implemented by exploring database models and their combinations. The integration was implemented in an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS), PostgreSQL. Results: The shared database led to efficient access to simulation parameters, more straightforward system integration and improved scalability. Conclusions: The results of modeling and simulation indicated that the integration is possible to implement.

Opis:
The paper presents the methodology prepared by the author. During the process of acquiring new vehicles for the armed forces, time is of the essence in practice of conducting a wide range of structure changes in previously implemented undercarriages. It has to be pointed out that with a high individuality and the very nature of the units, difficulties in scope of comprehensive testing with regard to matters of transport safety. What is more, two determinants are essential in the process of acquiring equipment - time and cost. The process does not allow for improvement and perfecting of the structure, and the research in scope of wheel vehicle movement safety may be limited. The procedure of implementation and verification of equipment stresses the structure optimization as early as on the designing and prototype preparation stages. The procedure of acquiring new wheel vehicles for the military is one of the main premises for preparing the methodology with use of simulation research. Conducting research on the basis of the prepared methodology allows for avoiding possible traffic risks. The methodology enables an effective support for the current process of wheel vehicle acquisition for the armed forces. In this work the research procedure consisting of the necessary range of prepared, experimentally verified models, accepted by the methodology, have been verified. In order to do that two simulation models have been built, both of various levels of complexity.

Opis:
The use of simulation in training staffs and personnel (primarily military) had already begun in the seventies of the last century, yet only in developed countries. Slovak Republic, even as non-NATO member (year 2000), has fully implemented standard simulation tools for constructive simulation into staffs’ training environment. Training and preparation of personnel is exactly the area where the possibilities for simulation technologies are (and still going to be) endless. Simulations are the important element able to fully contribute to the formation of skills of crisis managers making non-standard decisions in non-standard situations which are in line with the needs of the most effective protection of lives and property of citizens. The civil sector is looking for ways and possibilities of effective preparation due to changes in the security environment and the consequent necessity for active education of crisis managers. The article discusses the use of simulations and simulation technologies in the process of preparation and training from the military to civilian sector. The quality of training of crisis staff at both individual and collective level determines the real ability of action and the standard of coping with crisis and emergency situations. This article also presents actual results and the contributions of experimental crisis management computer assisted exercises and also defines the area of training and points to the fact that simulations are optimal alternative solutions of the training process linked to theoretical as well as practical knowledge.

Opis:
The situations which our forces faced during various stabilization military missions showed that light armored vehicles are not secure enough in the case of the mine or improvised explosive devices explosion. Nowadays, the primary way of protection against this type of threat is application of a V-shape bottom in the vehicle. Such a configuration of the bottom allows dissipation of explosion energy whereby the impulse, which is transmitted to the construction – the vehicle bottom or frame, has a much lower value than in the case where the bottom is flat. In the literature it is possible to find the results of model tests on an experimental laboratory test stand. These studies show that the value of the impulse which is transmitted to the structure depends on the shape of the deflector, actually on its angle. Assuming the above condition, there were performed numerical analyses of the values of the impulse transmitted to the construction for deflectors with different angles and for a variety of loads masses. The aim of the numerical analyses was to find the optimal angle of the deflector for the considered situation. In this model, the optimal value of the angle is that in which the considered value of the impulse transmitted to the construction reaches the minimum value. For this purpose, there was made a finite element model of deflector corresponding to the conditions of the experiment. The shell elements were used in this model. The model was loaded with a pressure impulse derived from the detonation of an explosive. The blast wave interaction with the structure was modeled using the fluid structure interaction. The numerical analyses were based on the finite element method with the explicit time integration method implemented in the LS-DYNA program.

Opis:
Military vehicles active protection systems against cumulative missiles are designed to destroy the attacking missile before it hits the vehicle armour. The article presents the results of numerical studies of one of the elements of active protection system, which is the fragmentation destructor. A typical directed fragmentation warhead consists of a few parts: metallic or composite case, explosive material and fragmentation elements in the form of spheres, cylinders. The authors of this study evaluated the influence of the destructor case type – in particular material – on the effectiveness of the destructor. The effectiveness was evaluated on the basis of the maximum speed of balls. Evaluation was performed for the selected balls from each layer. Numerical calculations were performed for two materials of the case: steel and aluminum. It was assumed in simulation that the detonating material is the plastic explosive C4. The numerical analyses were based on the finite element method with the explicit time integration method implemented in the Ls-Dyna program. The interaction of solid and gaseous medium has been modelled using ALE coupling. Mechanical properties of the case were described using a simplified Johnson-Cook type material. The detonation process was described using programmed burn model approximations, and the behaviour of detonation products was described with the JWL (John, Wilkins, Lee) equation.

Opis:
In general, traditional evaluations of target camouflage effects are usually conducted based on observational data and general results of statistical analysis. This widely applied methodology quantifies the detection and identification probabilities of camouflage objects but has considerable shortcomings. This data evaluation process is laborious and time-consuming and very low in reproducibility, which sheds light on the necessity of developing a more efficient method in this study field. The growth of computeraided image processing technology provides technical support for camouflage effect evaluation based on digital image processing. Digital pattern painting, which has been previously applied to combat utility uniforms, is a new methodology full of potential due to its broad geographical adaptability. This study proposes a multi-scale pattern-in-picture method to evaluate camouflage effects at different distances. We also established a computer-aided background image library and camouflage assessments with digital simulation and created an evaluation system that could be effectively applied to combat utility uniforms. More than 40 testers participated in this study, who were asked to score the designed camouflage schemes using the evaluation system proposed. The data from simulation assessments and individual evaluations show that the computer-aided simulation assessments conducted as part of this research can efficiently and objectively evaluate the camouflage effect on military objects.

The process of penetration of B-32 type 12.7 mm armour piercing bullet into one-layered and two-layered of 20 mm thickness RHA armour, is presented. Analysis was carried out with AUTODYN 5 programme and with the use of the SPH method. Projectile and armour strains occurring in the subsequent time period for seven variants with different material parameters of projectile and dimensions of armour, are shown. The influence of different material parameters of the projectile on its capability of armour penetration is presented here. It was proved that two times higher yield stress of projectile material causes almost three-fold improvement of depth of penetration and the bulging of the armour. In its initial phase of the projectile penetration into armour (0÷0.04 ms) the kinetic energy of the projectile rises together with the decrease of yield stress of its material. Computer simulation showed that capability of protection of one-layered RHA armour is higher than in case of two-layered RHA armour.

ObjectivesThe study aimed to establish the current incidence and severity of spatial disorientation (SD) in Polish military pilots when flying different aircraft types over their entire careers, and to determine how SD training and pilots’ flight experience might benefit their recognition of situations that may cause SD.Material and MethodsOverall, 176 military Polish pilots (aged 33.8±7.72 years, the number of flying hours: 1194±941) flying different aircraft types, who attended the aviation medicine course, were surveyed and asked to report their episodes of SD. To collect anonymous data, a postal SD questionnaire (INFO PUB 61/117/5) was used.ResultsIn the overall incidence rate of SD (96%), the most commonly experienced SD illusion was “loss of horizon due to atmospheric conditions” (81%). More SD incidents were reported by pilots who had received SD training. Some differences in the categories of the most commonly experienced SD illusion episodes between aircraft types were found. A severe episode adversely affecting flight safety was categorized by 10% of the respondents.ConclusionsIn Polish military aviation, episodes of SD are a significant threat to aviation safety. There is evidence for the beneficial effects of SD training in the improvement of pilots’ ability to recognize those factors that lead to SD.
