    The text focuses on the migration in the European Union and in Poland at the begging of the 21st century. It aims to prove that even if the reasons and consequences of migration are varied, they have significantly shaped the development of human civilization and have been a part of human socialization. Furthermore, this text points out that the phenomena of globalization and democratization have affected the population movement and caused new patterns of contemporary migration. The European Union is a great example of cooperation between different countries in order to realize the principle of free population movement, which was put to the test over past years. Additionally, this article characterizes the Polish migration, especially the inflow of immigrants to Poland. Poland has become an emigration and an attractive immigration country. This text revels also the consequences of migration in modern Europe.

    Poniższy tekst omawia problemy związane z badaniem migracji nieformalnej, która tradycyjnie postrzegana jest jako ułomna forma migracji formalnej, co wynika z hierarchicznej konstrukcji naszego aparatu badawczego. Oprócz sprzeczności logicznej, wynikającej ze stosowania tej samej metody dla zjawiska pozbawionego formy jak i dla zjawiska formalnego, podejście to stanowi główny problem badań nad zjawiskami nieformalnymi. W obecnym dyskursie migracja nieformalna jawi się jako funkcja przepisów prawnych specyficznych dla danego kraju i sposobu ich wdrażania, a samo istnienie trasy migracyjnej nie jest uważane za ważny czynnik wpływający na jej kształt, w związku z czym jest to zjawisko któremu nie poświęca się wiele uwagi. Niniejszy tekst uzupełnia tę lukę w badaniach poprzez przytoczenie przykładów empirycznych, pochodzących z wybranych europejskich tras migracyjnych.
    Research on so-called irregular or informal migration has traditionally been done within the same hierarchically structured conceptual framework as research on formal, that is, regular migration, as if form and not–form were the same. In the dominant discourse, informal migration is perceived as a function of country-specific legal regulations and their implementation, while routes are rarely discussed as a factor shaping migration.The article fills the gap by quoting empirical examples from European routes, in which, in interviews, informal migrants openly admitted that the proximity of the route and the accessibility of transport were the major factors influencing their decisions to migrate.

    Opis:
    Securitization is an intersubjective and intertextual process of incorporating specific topics into the security sphere. It is defined as an act of speech, based on the premise that language can not only convey information, but also create social facts. Incorporating specific topics into the security realm by the securitization process demonstrates that reality is a social construct in which language and image play an important role. In Europe, the fear of ‘others’ is growing. It is a consequence of the dynamic and unprecedented scale of human flows. This threat is also a consequence of the effective securitization of migration process. In the political and social debate more and more questions are emerging about the future of Europe. How will migratory processes change the cultural face of Europe? Does immigration endanger the cultural identity of Europe?
    Sekurytyzacja to intersubiektywny i intertekstualny proces włączania określonych tematów do sfery bezpieczeństwa. Tym samym opisuje jego dynamikę, wpływając na definiowanie sytuacji, zagrożeń oraz podejmowanie działań. Sekurytyzacja definiowana jako akt mowy opiera się na założeniu, że za pomocą języka można nie tylko przekazywać informacje, ale również tworzyć fakty społeczne. Jest to nie tylko prosty przekaz. Ważne jest to czemu wypowiedź ma służyć, jak dany fakt zostanie przedstawiony, przez kogo, do kogo i w jakiej sytuacji. Włączanie określonych tematów do sfery bezpieczeństwa w procesie sekurytyzacji jest dowodem na to, że rzeczywistość jest konstruktem społecznym, w którego tworzeniu język i obraz odgrywają istotną rolę. W Europie coraz silniejszy jest strach przed ‘innymi’. Jest on konsekwencją dynamiki i niespotykanej skali przepływów ludzkich. To poczucie zagrożenia jest również konsekwencją skutecznego procesu sekurytyzacji migracji. W debacie politycznej i społecznej coraz częściej pojawiają się pytania o przyszłość Europy. O to jak procesy migracyjne zmienią oblicze kulturowe Europy? Czy imigracja zagraża tożsamości kulturowej Europy?

    This article explores the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) migrants from Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union in Scotland. Drawing on interviews with 50 migrants, the article focuses on the experiences and aspirations which they articulate as being part of ‘a normal life’, and analyses them within broader conceptual understandings of security and ‘normality’. We first examine how normality is equated with an improved economic position in Scotland, and look at the ways in which this engenders feelings of emotional security and well-being. We then explore how more positive experiences around sexuality and gender identity are key to a sense of emotional security – i.e. of feeling accepted as ‘normal’, being visible as an LGBT person but ‘blending in’ rather than standing out because of it. Finally we look at the ways in which the institutional framework in Scotland, in particular the presence of LGBT-affirmative legislation, is seen by participants to have a normalising effect within society, leading to a broader sense of inclusion and equality – found, again, to directly impact upon participants’ own feelings of security and emotional well-being. The article engages with literatures on migration and sexuality and provides an original contribution to both: through its focus upon sexuality, which remains unexplored in debates on ‘normality’ and migration in the UK; and by bringing a migration perspective to the debates in sexuality studies around the normalising effect of the law across Europe. By bringing these two perspectives together, we reveal the inter-relationship between sexuality and other key spheres of our participants’ lives in order to better understand their experiences of migration and settlement.

    Drawing on extensive qualitative research into experiences of migration and settlement among Central and East European (CEE) migrants living in Scotland, this article examines the role of intersecting emotional and material (in)securities in migrant families’ decision-making regarding and experiences of longer-term settlement. The article queries fixed or given understandings of either ‘family’ or ‘security’ and explores the complex and sometimes contradictory relationship between them. In so doing, it makes a number of significant and interconnected theoretical and empirical contributions to existing research in the field of family migration. Through a critical analysis of the relationship between family and (in)security the article offers nuanced insight into the ways in which family processes of reunion, separation and (re)formation link to decisions regarding migration and settlement. The intersecting and sometimes contradictory forms of emotional and material support, obligation and vulnerability which both family relations and processes of migration and settlement entail are critically analysed by bringing together theoretical frameworks of social (in)security and understandings of family as ‘made’ rather than ‘given’. Finally, attention given to the temporal aspects of (in)security, as well as the transnational aspects of migrants’ lives, provides new ways of understanding the open-endedness of decision-making processes relating to migration and settlement, especially where these involve multiple decision-makers.

    Reading Władek Wiśniewski’s autobiography in the third volume of Thomas and Znaniecki’s The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, not entirely neglecting the economic factor, it is worth paying attention to a very interesting and not uncommon reason for leaving the homeland, that is “an escape”. Its various current modalities can be placed on the continuum between “an escape from” and “an escape to”. Using analytical tools developed by Fritz Schütze, which were created much later, but largely inspired by achievements of the Chicago School of Sociology with Thomas and Znaniecki as its major researches, it can be shown that Władek’s primary reason for leaving the country was to free himself from tense family relationships. They were based on exploitation and distrust, full of hypocrisy and injustice; a desire to move away from home in order to break with an image of his own identity in the eyes of his Significant Others – as a person who is not worthy of respect, a drunkard and loser. Thus, the main hypothesis of this article (emerging from analysing constellations of events in his life) is: Władek Wiśniewski’s motives for leaving the homeland and going overseas are not only and primarily economic but are placed between “an escape from” and “an escape to”, though they gravitate towards the latter one.
    Czytając życiorys Władka Wiśniewskiego zawarty w trzecim tomie „Chłopa polskiego w Europie i A meryce” Thomasa i Znanieckiego i nie pomijając w pełni czynnika ekonomicznego, warto zwrócić uwagę na bardzo ciekawy i nierzadki powód wyjazdu z kraju ojczystego, to znaczy na „ucieczkę”. Jej współczesne warianty można umieścić na kontinuum rozciągającym się między „ucieczką od” a „ucieczką do”. Korzystając z narzędzi analitycznych opracowanych przez Fritza Schützego, które zostały stworzone znacznie później, ale w dużej mierze zainspirowane były osiągnięciami Szkoły Chicago – w tym jej czołowych przedstawicieli jakim byli Thomas i Znaniecki – można wykazać, że głównym powodem opuszczenia kraju przez Władka było uwolnienie się z napiętych relacji rodzinnych. Były one nie tylko oparte na wyzysku i nieufności, ale też pełne hipokryzji i niesprawiedliwości. Tym samym chęć wyjazdu z domu wynikała w jego przypadku przede wszystkim z potrzeby zerwania z wizerunkiem własnej tożsamości w oczach znaczących Innych jako osoby niegodnej szacunku, pijaka i nieudacznika. Główna hipoteza tego artykułu (wyłaniająca się z analizy konstelacji wydarzeń w jego życiu) brzmi zatem: podstawową przyczyną, dla której Władek Wiśniewski opuścił swój kraj rodzinny i wyjechał do Ameryki nie były w pierwszym rzędzie motywy ekonomiczne, lecz splot okoliczności rozciągających się między „ucieczką od” a „ucieczka do”, choć przeważają te drugie.

    This article assesses the situation of forced migrants from Ukraine in European countries. I use data from the Statistical Bureaux and sociological institutions of Ukraine and recipient countries and from international organisations. Semi-structured interviews with experts were conducted in order to expand the information base of the research and obtain more substantiated analytical results and the trends of forced migration from Ukraine since 24 February 2022 were investigated. An attempt was made to explain the difference between the data from various sources regarding the migration of Ukrainians caused by the Russian war against Ukraine. The hierarchy of problems of forced migrants from Ukraine is determined on the base of in-depth interviews of experts. An attempt was made to estimate the impact of the forced migration of Ukrainians on local markets of goods and services. The recommendations for minimising the irreversible migration losses of the population of Ukraine are developed.

    Artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób urodzeni za granicą pracownicy uczelni i instytucji badawczych zlokalizowanych w Polsce i w Słowacji korzystają z oferty kulturalnej i infrastruktury miast, w których podjęli pracę. Badania, oparte na indywidualnych wywiadach pogłębionych (IDI), pokazały cztery powracające wzorce dotyczące interakcji z miastem. Opierając się na podmiotowej rekonstrukcji przekonań uczestników badania, wyrażonej w formie narracji, można wyróżnić dwa style aktywne i dwa pasywne. Aktywne to „zachwyt miastem europejskim”, charakterystyczny głównie dla przybyszów z Ameryki Północnej oraz „życie w obrębie diaspory”. Style pasywne określam zaś mianem „instrumentalnego kontaktu z miastem”, typowego dla pracowników dojeżdżających z państw sąsiednich wyłącznie do pracy oraz „kontaktu powierzchownego”, czyli mało intensywnych kontaktów z podstawowymi instytucjami dostępnymi w mieście ze względu na brak czasu, charakterystyczny dla pracy akademickiej, w której trudno oddzielić od siebie aktywności zawodowe i pozazawodowe.
    The paper analyzes how the foreign-born employees of universities and research institutions located in Poland and Slovakia benefit from the cultural offer and infrastructure of the cities, where they work. A study, based on individual in-depth interviews (IDI), has discovered four recurring patterns of interaction with urban culture. Based on the subjective reconstruction of the participants’ beliefs expressed in their narratives, two active styles and two passive styles can be distinguished. The active are: “the admiration of a European city”, typical for academics arriving from North America as well as “diaspora life”. The passive are: “instrumental contact with the city”, typical for commuters from neighboring countries states only for work and “fleeting contacts” with basic institutions available in the city due to lack of time, characteristic of academic work that often affects work-life balance.
