Opis:
The article analyzes the problem of immigrants’ participation in the elections on a local level as a display of political activity and the means of integration of the country and its migrants. Assuming the European-wide perspective it is noticeable that given countries differentiate in the level of enabling immigrants to participate in the political life. In Scandinavia and several north European countries there is the highest rate of immigrants’ participation, on the other hand, in the countries that joined the EU in 2004 the rate is the lowest. In 2010 immigrants without the EU citizenship were able to run for the local elections in 13 European countries and they had the voting right in 19 countries. In Poland only the EU citizens are allowed to participate in the elections. The research into the legal solutions enabling immigrants (especially those who are not from the EU) to acquire more voting rights proved to have interesting results. The research has shown that over a half of the people willing to participate in the parliamentary elections is for granting the voting rights to immigrants. According to the research among the electorates, the substantial percentage of the Platforma Obywatelska voters proved to be in favor of granting the voting rights to immigrants. Less support is displayed by the potential voters of SLD and Ruch Palikota. Furthermore, the majority of the PiS voters is against the immigrants’ participation in the local elections. Finally, the results of the research show that voters perceive differently the problem of granting immigrants the right to vote versus the right to stand for the elections. Although the first one is accepted by the majority of voters, the latter - not so much.

This article analyses Polish migration and asylum policies and how they conform to EU legislation. Firstly, it focuses on the most important stages of developing these policies in the EU and their legal and institutional implementation in Poland. Secondly, it discusses the current trends of economic migration to Poland, the challenges of migrant integration, and the attitudes of Polish citizens to migrant workers. Finally, it shows how Polish asylum and visa policies, and ways of combatting illegal immigration are in line with EU requirements. The article also shows that in recent years economic migration has been recognised as positively influencing economic growth and innovation, especially when migration of highly qualified workers is regulated. One of the most important challenges for the future is the development of appropriate integration strategies for migrants coming to Poland.

The number of students with migrant experiences at Polish schools is increasing. This group includes both foreign students and Polish students coming back from emigration together with their parents. They receive educational support in order to facilitate their adaptation and integration. Those students are taught how to communicate at school and study in Polish, which means that they are taught the language of school education. Teaching the language of school education can be located in between foreign language didactics and native language didactics. The article describes the relation between teaching Polish as a language of school education and teaching Polish as a foreign language. The most important aspect of teaching a foreign language is to prepare a learner to communicate in everyday life and professional life situations. Efficiency is essential here; language correctness is of secondary importance. The most important element in the process of teaching the language of education is to develop the language skills that will enable a student to communicate at school, gain new knowledge and use it effectively. It requires different educational content, teaching methodology and requirements. The article presents the reflection on teaching the language of education with reference to the Polish educational system. Opis:
Nowadays, the significance of women in the international movement of migrants is important both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Many migrant women move to other countries either on their own or to join their husbands or other family members. The number of migrant women is also increasing in Europe. For this reason, focusing on the phenomenon of gender-based migration has become an important research element and affects many areas. The mass migration of women from highly diverse cultural backgrounds to European countries draws particular attention to the problems of integrating these women in host countries. However, most European countries lack integration policies that take into account the real needs of migrant women. Given that women account for almost half of all migrants, data on migration should be gender-sensitive and state policies must take into account how gender actually shapes the different needs of migrants. Also, since migrant women/ refugees who come to European countries constitute a heterogeneous group in many respects, this heterogeneity should be taken into account in integration processes. In this article, two issues have been taken into account as research questions: 1, are immigrant/refugee women treated the same as immigrant/refugee men? and 2, is gender taken into account in the integration policies of European countries? To study the issues presented in the article, a review of the available literature was used, as well as data available on the websites of the OECD and the European Commission.

“(Late) resettlers”, or to put it in simple terms, people of German ancestry who came to Germany from Eastern Europe after World War II, constitute a peculiar case within the spectrum of German migration. On one hand, they are distinct from foreigners, on the other hand, despite having German citizenship, they stand out from the native German population.L. Wilkiewicz refers to this category as “quasi-forced resettlers”. The forced nature of the young resettlers migration may then be seen as doubly strengthened by the fact that they had no impact on their parents decision to leave the country. They were, in a sort of way, uprooted from their original environment and planted into a new, alien one. Having accepted German citizenship and having been attributed the purpose of “living as Germans among Germans”, the resettlers were expected to show a higher degree of integration with local society than “ordinary” migrants. In this study, I shall confine myself to a few selected aspects affecting the success of integration. Presented below are some of the memories that the young resettlers have of the moment of their “(quasi)-forced” migration, of their early days in Germany, of Poland as the country of their childhood, of the reasons for departure as given by their parents, and of the main factors – apart from those personality-related such as intelligence –that contributed to their successful integration.

A high level of adherence with Catholicism is one of the cultural similarities between the cohort of Polish immigrants living in Ireland and the rest of the Republic of Ireland’s population. Sharing the same religious beliefs seems to be a social bridge that accelerates mutual acceptance and adjustment at the time of massive migration. Therefore, the article aims to evaluate the integrative function of institutional religiousness. The fi ndings show that both the Polish immigrants and the natives tend to separate from one another instead of integrating, though. With regard to the bonding function of institutional religiousness, a high level of intercultural competence among religious leaders is required. It is evident, however, that neither the Irish Catholic church nor the chaplaincy for Polish immigrants have such skilful and integrative leaders.

The article applies the concept of anchoring, defined as the process of searching for footholds and points of reference which allows individuals to acquire socio-psychological stability and security and function effectively in a new environment, to explore complex, multidimensional and flexible adaptation and settlement processes among migrants from Ukraine in Poland. Based on 40 in-depth interviews and questionnaires with migrants resident in Warsaw and its vicinity, we argue that the traditional categories employed for analysing migrants’ adaptation and settlement such as 'integration' or 'assimilation' are not always adequate to capture the way of functioning and experience of contemporary Ukrainian migrants. Rather than traditional categories, we propose to apply the concept of anchoring which enables us to capture Ukrainians’ 'fluid' migration, drifting lives and complex identities as well as mechanisms of settling down in terms of searching for relative stability rather than putting down roots. The paper discusses the ambiguous position of Ukrainian migrants in Poland constructed as neither the strangers nor the same, gives insight into their drifting lives and illuminates ways of coping with temporariness and establishing anchors providing migrants with a sense of stability and security. This approach, linking identity, security and incorporation, emphasises, on the one hand, the psychological and emotional aspects of establishing new footholds and, on the other hand, tangible anchors and structural constraints. Its added value lies in the fact that it allows for complexity, simultaneity and changeability of anchoring and the reverse processes of un-anchoring to be included.

Opis:
Migrant integration remains a continuous challenge in many EU countries, as shown by the retreat from multiculturalism and the concerns regarding Muslim migrants. In recent years, the increase in asylum-seekers has added further complexities to the issue. Meanwhile, volunteering is considered to be an important aspect of today’s society and a thermometer of civic well-being. Bringing together the field of migration studies and research on volunteering, we investigate whether volunteering would foster processes of integration and intercultural relations. We do so by presenting an innovative empirical study based on interviews and self-administered questionnaires conducted at two points in time over a period of about a year in a specific setting that brought together EU and third-country nationals in volunteering activities in six European contexts. Thus, we are able to provide an in-depth account of volunteering experiences and their effects on intercultural relations and processes of integration. The research highlights how volunteering fosters social interactions, intersecting with dynamics of inclusion. It is a valuable tool that strengthens the community as well as the process of social integration, helping to overcome the tensions and conflicts that persist in European societies. At the same time, we argue that volunteering cannot make up for all integration challenges since the process of societal integration requires a more comprehensive approach which includes tackling discrimination in structural integration.

This quantitative survey among migrant and intercultural couples in the Netherlands investigates the relationships between marriage preparation, pastoral accompaniment and relationship quality. Relationship quality may be negatively influenced by a process of cultural transition, by instability of the relationship itself or by underdeveloped communication skills between partners. Participants (n=223) have been married in the Catholic Church between 1995 and 2021. Correlations between various religious and spiritual activities and relationship quality have been calculated through linear regression analysis. Results show that overall, migrant couples and intercultural couples appreciate a more intensive, professional, and welcoming Marriage and Relationship Education (MRE) and pastoral accompaniment after marriage. It is also concluded that seeking reconciliation after a conflict (r=0.361) and experiencing forgiveness from one's spouse (r=0.188) are significantly associated with a higher perceived relationship quality. Finally, data indicate that migrants with a non-Western cultural background show a significant pattern of cultural defence (μ=-0,375) in comparison to Dutch people.

The article attempts to use the concept of social anchoring to analyse the phenomenon of temporary migration of Ukrainians working in Poland in the second decade of the 21st century. The concept is relatively new in Polish migrant literature and refers to the process of searching for life’s backrest points – anchors, allowing individuals to achieve psychosocial stability and to function effectively under new conditions. The collective of Ukrainians constitutes an interesting research category due to the fact that Poland is their main place of choice for migration both for a limited period of time – short (about one year), a certain long (several years) and for permanent residence. In its post-war history, Poland experiences for the first time contact with a mass migrant, not only taking up gainful employment, but settling with his family and attempting integration and assimilation into Polish society. Although Poles have fiercely opposed refugees from Syria or Africa, they hardly see Ukrainian migration as a threat to themselves. With an empirical base in the form of 36 interviews conducted among Ukrainian citizens employed in Poland in 2019, we would like to try to describe the differences in the projections of Ukrainian migration in the context of declarations on staying/leaving the country of migration after achieving the targets.

We conducted qualitative research taking into consideration four perspectives: children, adolescents, parents and teachers. In this paper, we focus on the most important challenges in a new educational context based on the narrations of children, adolescents, parents and teachers and dividing the challenges into three groups: purely educational, socio-cultural and emotional. Finally, we also discuss best practices which proved helpful for children’s adaptation to the new environment and which may be used in the school context.

Intermarriage has been argued to be a key indicator of migrants’ integration into the host society. However, relatively little is known about the experiences of what many forms of intermarriage entail in a super-diverse context. In this paper, I problematise and further investigate the assumed link between intermarriage and the cultural, identificational and interactive dimensions of social integration of Polish migrants in Britain. The analysis is based on the results of a qualitative research project conducted among Polish migrants in Birmingham and surrounding towns of the West Midlands, where Poles represent the third most numerous non-UK-born population. The data collected in the course of this research suggests that there are three main patterns of interactive integration of Polish intermarried migrants: (1) the classical path of acculturation and integration, (2) inverse integration, and (3) the more pluralistic cosmopolitan mode.

Opis:
In recent years the public debate in Europe has been dominated by the topic of refugee crisis. Disputes on its solving have become a part of public life in practically all European countries. Intergovernmental organisations, like the European Union for example, are also interested in this problem. Austria is one of the countries that directly experienced the influx of migrants. In the context of these events, it is worth considering three issues. First of all, is it possible to continue the existing assumptions in the time of the migration crisis? The second is the question of specific challenges for the “integration package” implemented in Austria. The article also attempts to answer the questions: what is the main costs of integration and what is the opinion about this costs? The economic factor has been discussed from several perspectives – the cause, the effect and the kind of challenge for Austria’s integration policy.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badania, którym objęte zostały opublikowane w mediach społecznościowych wypowiedzi migrantów z Polski w Wielkiej Brytanii i z Ukrainy w Polsce.
The article presents the analysis of posts published in social media by Polish migrants settled in the United Kingdom and Ukrainian migrants in Poland. The paper uses the concept of social anchoring defi ned as the process of searching for points of reference (anchors) which allow individuals to acquire socio-psychological stability and security and function eff ectively in a new life environment. The research showed the role of objective anchors such as employment, economic resources and institutional environment of the destination country as well as the crucial role of anchors embedded in social relations. Migrants from both analysed groups anchored themselves in strategically-imagined communities while constructing their ethnic and class identities that became their points of references in the new socio-cultural environment. In the narratives of Polish migrants in the UK the main reference groups are white, British citizens on one side and members of non-European minorities on the other. At the same time Polish migrants emphasize class and educational diff erences among the Polish community in the UK. In the case of the Ukrainian migrants in Poland the main reference group consists of members of the Polish, homogenous society. They also construct their identities with reference to European values. The research showed that in narratives of both analysed groups a pro-integration attitude is preferred.
