Opis:
Doped vanadate ceramics with general formula Ca3-xInxVO8 were synthesized by using two different precursors ( oxalate & citrates) to get maximum homogeneity inside the bulk of the material where x = 0.05 and 0.25 mole. Structural and microstructural properties were monitoring by using both of XRD and SEM evaluating that indium doped - calcium vanadate ceramic has the semiconducting classical doubly perovskite phase as proved in the X-ray diffractogram, grain size of the material bulk was found to be in between 1.57- 2.23 μm which are lower than those reported in literatures .Magnetic measurements indicated that the In- doped- calcium vanadate ceramic exhibits an semiconducting behavior confirming that indium- hole dopings enhance the paramagnetic character and semi-conduction mechanism of the hexagonal perovskite phase. Furthermore 3D-AFM investigations were made to study effect of indium doping on the surface topology and grain size in the material bulk.

In this work, FEI SciosTM field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG SEM) equipped with a unique combination of analytical and imaging detectors was utilized to examine structure and chemistry of selected Si/ refractory couples. The couples were obtained in wettability tests performed by the sessile drop method coupled with contact heating of a refractory substrate (h-BN, SiC) at ultra-high temperature (up to 1750°C). The SEM observations were carried out on top-views of the couples, in order to evaluate surface and interfacial phenomena in Si/h-BN and Si/SiC systems. A full range of available detectors (e.g. classical Everhart-Thornley detector (ETD) or advanced in-lens detectors) working under various operation modes (secondary electrons (SE), backscattered electrons (BSE), a mixed mode), were used upon analyses in order to reveal specific features of obtained structures.

Opis:
In addition to traditional imaging of the surface, atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables wide variety of additional measurements. One of them is higher harmonic imaging. In the tapping mode the nonlinear contact between a tip and specimen results in higher frequency vibrations. More information available from the higher harmonics analysis proves to be helpful for more detailed imaging. Such visualization is especially useful for heterogeneous surfaces which are studied to understand corrosion mechanisms. In this paper the measurement system for nonlinear surface spectroscopy by AFM for corrosion processes monitoring is presented.
Oprócz tradycyjnego zastosowania, mikroskop sił atomowych (ang. Atomic Force Microscope, AFM) [1] (rys. 1) umożliwia wiele dodatkowych pomiarów, wśród których wyróżnić można obrazowanie powierzchni próbki wyższymi harmonicznymi [6-13]. W trybie półkontaktowym [2-4] w odpowiedzi mikrobelki zauważane są wyższe harmoniczne będące wynikiem oddziaływań nieliniowych [2-6]. Wykorzystanie wzmacniacza fazoczułego (ang.: lock-in amplifier) umożliwia obrazowanie topografii badanej próbki [12, 13] nawet do dwudziestej harmonicznej. Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy, ECAFM, rys. 2). Prezentowane rozwiązanie (rys. 3, rys. 4) umożliwia jednoczesną rejestrację obrazów do szóstej harmonicznej podczas monitorowania procesów korozji (rys. 5, 6). Proponowany system pozwala na uzyskiwanie dodatkowych informacji o zjawiskach korozji zachodzących na skanowanych powierzchniach. Taka metoda stanowi uzupełnienie istniejących metod analizy powierzchni korozyjnych [14-16].

Opis:
The fin rays and two types of scales (enlarged and regular) of the Devonian sarcopterygian Eusthenopteron foordi are redescribed using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The fin rays consist of lepidotrichia composed of ossified, jointed and branched segment pairs. The basal segments are cylindrical, but more distal elements are crescentic in section. The distribution of Sharpey’s fibres varies along the lepidotrichia. In the proximal segments, lateral bundles form a belt connecting adjacent hemisegments. In the distal segments, thin bundles are restricted to the area facing the fin surface. Both enlarged and regular scales have a similar spatial organisation. They are composed of a superficial highly mineralised layer covering a thick basal plate where the fibrils are distributed in superimposed strata forming a plywood−like structure. Nevertheless, the enlarged and regular scales differ in their shape, in the mineralised tissues of the superficial layer, and in the organisation of the plywood−like structure. The superficial layer of the enlarged scales is composed of parallel−fibered bone covering a deeper layer of woven−fibered bone. The basal plate is made of an orthogonal plywood−like structure. The thin, lamellar, imbricated regular scales display the characteristics of elasmoid scales. The mineralised tissue forming the superficial layer resembles that of extant teleost scales. In the basal plate, the twisted plywood−like structure is composed of closely packed fibrils that are preserved down to the ultrastructural level owing to the persistence of bridges connecting the fibrils. The enlarged and the regular scales of Eusthenopteron foordi do not present superficial odontodes, in contrast to ancestral thick rhomboid scales. The disappearance of enamel/enameloid and dentine may be related to the evolutionary trend towards a lightening of the dermal skeleton that would improve the swimming abilities of the animal. The characteristics of the dermal skeleton of Eusthenopteron foordi support the hypothesis that this process began early in osteichthyans.

Opis:
Genus Amphidinium Claparède et Lachmann (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) sensu lato has recently undergone a reappraisal using extended microscopical methods and genetic comparisons, with the type species and morphologically similar species used for the redescription of the genus Amphidinium sensu stricto. Within the latter concept of the genus, the new species Amphidinium thermaeum is established using light and scanning electron microscopy in combination with LSU rDNA phylogeny. This species was isolated from the Thermaikos Gulf in Greece, and its description is largely based on observations of cultured material. The main diacritic features distinguishing A. thermaeum from related taxa were: shape, size and plasticity of the cell, position of distal and proximal cingulum ends, site of longitudinal flagellar insertion, sulcal course, pusule details, plastid characteristics, and mode of cell division. Genetic phylogeny applying Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood, and Neighbor-Joining analyses, places A. thermaeum in an independent position within the Amphidinium sensu stricto monophyletic group, and the new species is closely related to its small and morphologically similar siblings (A. massartii, A. klebsii, A. trulla, A. gibbosum, A. carterae).

Opis:
Introduction. Fungal keratitis is a severe condition which may lead to blindness. Fungal keratitis, also known mycotic keratitis or keratomycosis, has worldwide distribution, but is more common in tropical climates compared to moderate zones. In recent years, there have been several studies suggesting an increase in the number of mycotic keratitis cases in countries with a moderate climate. There is little data available with no literature review concerning fungal keratitis in European countries. Objective. To analyse the causes, presentation, and clinico-pathological associations of fungal keratitis in a retrospective series of patients referred to the Department of Ophthalmology of the Railway Hospital in Katowice, south-west Poland, and comparing the findings to previously published studies in peer reviewed articles from other European countries published between 2000–2019. Materials and method. Data were collected using the medical records of patients with fungal keratitis. Risk factors, clinical manifestation and treatment results were analysed from 45 patients (45 eyes) with fungal keratitis treated in the Department of Ophthalmology of Railway Hospital in Katowice between January 2013 – December 2017. The factors affecting the development of infection, visual acuity at baseline and at the end of treatment, as well as treatment method selection, were analysed. Literature review was performed using the Medline, Pubmed, Embase databases and Google scholar. The inclusion criteria were peer reviewed papers published between 2000–2019 which reported data from patients with fungal keratitis in at least one European country. 11 peer reviewed articles which matched the inclusion criteria were analysed. Results. The mean BCVA of patients treated in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Railway Hospital in Katowice upon diagnosis was 2.3 (logMAR), compared to 1.95 (logMAR) at the end of treatment. Pearson’s chi-squared test was used to establish the final mean BCVA in eyes with keratitis caused by Candida spp. compared with keratitis caused by Filamentous spp. The reviewed articles showed poor results of treatment and diagnostic difficulties in fungal keratitis. Conclusions. Fungal keratitis is a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge and may occur in rural and urban areas. Early and accurate diagnosis followed by proper antifungal treatment can prevent blindness and improve BCVA results.

Opis:
Purpose: Cement concrete is characterized as brittle in nature, the loading capacity of which is completely lost once failure is initiated. This characteristic, which limits the application of the material, can in one way be overcome by the addition of some small amount of short randomly distributed fibers (steel, glass, synthetic). Design/methodology/approach: The present study deals with the inclusion of alkali resistant glass fibers in concrete by percentage weight of cement. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength and split tensile strength have been studied after exposing the concrete samples to elevated temperatures of up to 500°C. Water binder ratios of 0.4, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55 and 0.6 have been used to prepare design mix proportions of concrete to achieve a characteristic strength of 30 MPa. The depth of carbonation post elevated temperature exposure has been measured by subjecting the concrete samples to an accelerated carbonation (5%) condition in a controlled chamber. Findings: Conclusions have been drawn in accordance to the effect of fiber replacement and temperature increment. The concrete mixes with fiber content of 1% by weight of cement had shown better strength in compression and tension compared to the other dosages and conventional concrete (without fiber). Microcracking due to internal stream pressure reduced the mechanical strengths of concrete at elevated temperatures. Also, from TGA it was observed that the amount of calcium carbonate in samples with fiber added, post carbonation was less than the mixes without fiber in it. Research limitations/implications: The present study has been limited to alkali resistant glass fibers as the conventional glass fibers undergo corrosion due to hydration. Practical implications: The glass fiber reinforced concrete can be used in the building renovation works, water and drainage works, b ridge and tunnel lining panels etc. Originality/value: Based upon the available literature, very seldom the studies are addressing the behaviour of alkali resistant glass fiber concrete and its exposure to elevated temperatures.

Introduction and aim. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to prevent further transmission. The present study aimed to correlate cycle threshold values with smear microscopy and culture positivity, and determine cut-off cycle threshold values for levels of smear grade and culture positivity. Material and methods. Forty presumptive cases of pulmonary TB were included and subjected to Ziehl-Neelsen stain, culture on Lowenstein Jensen media, CBNAAT and drug susceptibility testing for first line anti-tubercular drugs. Results. Our study predicts 3+, 2+, and 1+ sputum smear grade at a cut-off of Ct value ≤ 16.74, ≤19.68, and ≤ 22.32 respectively. A strong positive correlation was found between time to culture positivity and Ct value. A cut-off of Ct value ≤22.32 predicts culture positivity with a sensitivity of 92%, and a specificity of 67%. None of the isolates showed rifampicin resistance by 1% proportion method. Conclusion. Understanding the appropriate utilization of CBNAAT Ct values and their correlation with smear microscopy grade, culture, and drug susceptibility testing can assist clinicians in early identification and prompt initiation of appropriate treatment. This knowledge can contribute to the prevention of drug resistance, reduced transmission, and a decreased disease burden associated with TB.

In the paper, the process of laser ablation of Cr2Te3 has been studied in the respect of its application to thin solid films deposition of this material in the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technology. Target has been prepared in the shape of pressed tablet from powder Cr2Te3. The energy density of the ND3+:YAG laser beam were 16 J/cm2 and 34 J/cm2 and the time of laser pulse was 20 ns. The composition of the surface layer of the target after ablation has been measured using EDX method. The excess of chromium in respect to it amount in initial composition has been measured. This result points on the weak desorption of this component at the ablation parameters applied.

Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy used to characterize the product, showed that the MCM-41material had an average particle size of 110 nm. The synthesized material was used to investigate the effects of acidity, adsorption time, the concentration of Hg2+, adsorbent dosage and temperature on the adsorption of Hg2+. The results showed that the optimal adsorptive conditions were: pH 5.0, m(MCM-41):mHg2+ 6.67, temperature 20 °C and contact adsorption time 60 min, for the initial Hg2+concentration of 1.0 mg/cm3. The maximum adsorptive amount of Hg2+ was 56.48 mg Hg2+/g MCM-41. The results of the desorptive effect of three desorption agents such as HCl, HNO3 and HAc showed that the best desorbent was HCl at the concentration of 0.10 mol/dm3. The highest desorption efficiency was 77.21% for the desorption time 2 h.
