Opis:
Quantity of some groups of microorganisms and dehydrogenase activity were determined in the top soil layer (0-10 cm) of natural and drained peatland. High soil moisture (85 to 90%) in the natural peatland accounted for the reduction of fungi and cellulolytic microorganisms which can reflect a restricted process of peat mineralization. In late summer (September), peat-muck soils of drained meadows supported rather high numbers of cellulolytic microflora except for the Modzelówka peatland that was highly decomposed. In the alaer peat with high degree of mucking and low moisture content (55-63%) fungi were abundant. Dehydrogenase activity was the highest (153 to 181 ul H2 g-1) in natural peats with high moisture content (80-89%) and the lowest (5-13 ul H2 g-1) in alder peats with high degree of mucking. Thus, moisture and degree of peat mucking affect development of microorganisms and dehydrogenase activity causing more or less intense mineralization of organic matter.

Opis:
The effect of arable soil was quantified against non-cultivated soil on easily degradable carbon and other selected microbiological factors, i.e. soil microbial biomass, respiration activity, and dehydrogenase activity. The intent was to ascertain whether easily degradable carbo can be useful as a sensitive indicator of both soil biological degradation and microbial hotspots indication. As a result, it was found that soil respiration activity was significantly higher (p <0.0001) in all controls, ranging between 30-60 vs. 11.5-23.7 μmol CO2 kg d.m.-1 h-1 for the arable soils. Dehydrogenase activity was significantly lower in the arable soil (down to 35-40% of the control values, p <0.001) varying depending on the soil type. The microbial biomass was also significantly higher at the non-cultivated soil (512-2807 vs. 416-1429 μg g-1 d.m., p <0.001), while easily degradable carbon ranged between 620-1209 mg kg-1 non-cultivated soil and 497-877 mg kg-1 arable soil (p <0.0001). It was demonstrated that agricultural practices affected soil properties by significantly reducing the levels of the studied parameters in relation to the control soils. The significant correlations of easily degradable carbon-respiration activity (ρ = 0.77*), easily degradable carbon-dehydrogenase activity (ρ = 0.42*), and easily degradable carbon-microbial biomass (ρ = 0.53*) reveal that easily degradable carbon is a novel, suitable factor indicative of soil biological degradation. It, therefore, could be used for evaluating the degree of soil degradation and for choosing a proper management procedure.

Opis:
Heavy metal contamination of soil occurs when heavy metals are introduced to soil through human activities, leading to the gradual deterioration of the ecology and environment. Microorganism activity reflects the intensity of various biochemical reactions in soil, and changes in it reflect the level of heavy metal pollution affecting the soil. The effects were studied of heavy metal Cd on the microbial activity of soil at different concentrations by investigating the respiratory intensity, urease activity, and catalase activity in forest soil and garden soil. The results showed that the respiratory intensity, urease and catalase activities in the garden soil were all higher than in the forest soil. Cd has obvious inhibitory effects on microbial activities. The three parameters exhibited a downward trend with increasing concentrations of Cd. Catalase activity increased when the mass concentration of Cd reached 1.0 mg/kg, indicating that low concentrations of Cd can promote the activity of some microorganisms. Respiratory intensity and urease activity also increased when the concentration reached 10.0 mg/kg, showing that respiratory intensity and urease activity have strong response mechanisms to adverse conditions. The effective state of Cd in soil, as well as inhibition of microbial activity, decreased with incubation time.

Opis:
Activity of soil dehydrogenase (DHA) was measured in the mineral soil in a forest stand of 15 to 16-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from geographically diverse populations, as an indicator of biological activity of soil microorganisms, in a provenance experiment in Poland. The pine populations originated from six European countries (Sweden, Russia, Latvia, Poland, Germany, France) and differed widely in aboveground biomass and productivity. Soil DHA during two growing seasons showed pronounced seasonal variability, which was significantly related to the fine root concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates. Higher DHA was found in soil under canopies of the central and southern European populations than in those from more northern parts of the Scots pine range. Significant positive correlation between soil DHA and aboveground tree biomass suggest that these patterns most likely resulted from differences in carbon dynamics and productivity among populations.

Opis:
In the pot experiment the effects of contamination of diesel oil of proper brown soil developed from light loamy sand on microorganisms abundance and activity of soil enzymes were studied. Diesel oil was applied at the following rates: 0, 2, 4 and 6 cm3 kg-1 of the soil. Trial was performed in two experimental series: amended or not amended with straw. It was found that soil pollution with oil stimulated development of Azotohcicer sp., oligotrophia copiotrophic and ammonitiers bacteria; whereas inhibited fungi proliferation, dehydrogenases and urease activities and did not affect actinomycetes number. Diesel oil addition to the soil reduced positive effects of straw on microbiological and biochemical soil properties. Oil pollution adversely affected growth and development of triticale. Straw amendment diminished level of oil toxicity to triticale.

Opis:
These studies are based on a field experiment carried out in the years 2011-2016 at RZD IUNG-PIB in Grabów. The experiment consisted of three crop rotations differing with respect to leguminous crops included in these rotation, reflecting three different types of ecological (organic) farms. Crop rotation A, representing a dairy farm, consisted of: maize - cerealpulse mixture (undersown with grass-red clover) - grass-red clover ley (year I) - grass-red clover ley (year II) - winter wheat. Crop rotation B, representing a pig farm, included: maize - spring barley - cereal-pulse mixture - pea - winter wheat. Crop rotation C, representing a farm without livestock, consisted of: maize - cereal mixture - spring wheat (undersown with red clover) - red clover - winter wheat. The objective of this study was to assess the presented crop rotations with respect to their productivity and effects on yields of particular crops and basic soil fertility indicators. Among the compared rotations the highest productivity in terms of cereal units was obtained in the case of crop rotation A representing the dairy farming system, and the lowest productivity in the case of rotation B representing the livestock (pig) farming system. During the 6-year experimental period no significant differences were found between the compared rotations with respect to phosphorus content in the soil. Potassium contents in the soil of rotations A and C were lower than in rotation B. The compared ecological farming systems had minor effects on soil microbial activity indicators. Dehydrogenase activity and glomalin contents were lowest while hot water extracted C was highest in the soil of rotation B as compared to the soil of rotations A and C.
Badania polowe prowadzono w latach 2011-2016 w RZD IUNG - PIB w Grabowie. Schemat doświadczenia uwzględniał trzy zmianowania zawierające wybrane gatunki roślin bobowatych. Oceniane zmianowania reprezentowały jednocześnie różne typy gospodarstw ekologicznych. Zmianowanie A - odpowiadające modelowi gospodarstwa mlecznego: kukurydza ++ - mieszanka zbożowo - strączkowa + wsiewka - koniczyna czerwona +trawa I rok - koniczyna czerwona +trawa II rok - pszenica ozima. Zmianowanie B - reprezentujące model gospodarstwa z chowem trzody: kukurydza ++ - jęczmień jary - mieszanka zbożowo-strączkowa - groch - pszenica ozima. Zmianowanie C - reprezentujące model gospodarstwa bezinwentarzowego: kukurydza ++ - mieszanka zbożowa - pszenica jara + wsiewka - koniczyna czerwona - pszenica ozima. Celem badań była ocena zmianowań reprezentujących różne typy gospodarstw ekologicznych obejmująca: plonowanie roślin, produkcyjność zmianowań oraz podstawowe wskaźniki żyzności gleb. Spośród porównywanych zmianowań największą wydajność w jednostkach zbożowych uzyskano w zmianowaniu A reprezentującym model gospodarstwa mlecznego, a najmniejszą w zmianowaniu B odpowiadającym modelowi gospodarstwa z chowem trzody chlewnej. W okresie 6 lat badań we wszystkich ocenianych zmianowaniach nie stwierdzono istotnych zmian zasobności gleb w fosfor. W glebie zmianowania A i C odnotowano największy spadek zawartości potasu. Porównywane sposoby gospodarowania w niewielkim stopniu wpływały na wskaźniki aktywności mikrobiologicznej. W glebie zmianowania B w porównaniu do pozostałych zmianowań stwierdzono najmniejszą aktywność dehydrogenazy, największą ilość C org. w ekstraktach gorącą wodą oraz najmniejszą zawartość glomalin.

The effect of tillage intensity on changes of microbiological activity and content of particulate organic matter in soil under winter wheat duirng 3 years was studied. Microbial response related to the tillage-induced changes in soil determined on the content of biomass C and N, the rate of CO2 evolution, B/F ratio, the activity of dehydrogenases, acid and alkaline phosphatases, soil C/N ratio and microbial biomass C/N ratio confirmed the high sensitivity of soil microbial populations to the tillage system applied. After three year studies, the direct sowing system enhanced the increase of labile fraction of organic matter content in soil. There were no significant changes in the labile fraction quantity observed in soil under conventional tillage. Similar response related to the tillage intensity was observed in particulate organic matter quantities expressed as a percentage of total organic matter in soil. A high correlation coefficients calculated between contents of soil microbial biomass C and N, particulate organic matter and potentiallymineralizable N, and the obtained yields of winter wheat grown on experimental fields indicated on a high importance of biological quality of status of soil for agricultural crop production.

Field study was performed on Haplic Luvisol soil to determine the effects of soil compaction and straw mulching on microbial parameters of soil under soybean. Treatments with different compaction were established on unmulched and mulched with straw soil. The effect of soil compaction and straw mulching on the total bacteria number and activities of dehydrogenases, protease, alkaline and acid phosphatases was studied. The results of study indicated the decrease of enzymes activities in strongly compacted soil and their increase in medium compacted soil as compared to no-compacted treatment. Mulch application caused stimulation of the bacteria total number and enzymatic activity in the soil under all compaction levels. Compaction and mulch effects were significant for all analyzed microbial parameters (P<0.001).

The use of sewage sludge in agriculture is known to be environmentally friendly as it is a practical way of recycling municipal waste. A short-term experiment was carried out to study the changes in soil chemical and microbiological properties influenced through the addition of sewage sludge along with saline irrigation under a pearl millet-wheat crop rotation. There were three irrigation (canal water (0.35 dS m-1), 8 and 10 dS m-1 electrical conductivity saline water) and five fertilizer treatments (control-F1, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1)-F2, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1) +50% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF)-F3, sewage sludge (5 t ha-1)+75% RDF-F4 and RDF-F5). The results showed that soil organic carbon, and available nitrogen, and phosphorus were reduced significantly under saline conditions but there was an increase in available potassium with the increasing salinity levels of the irrigation water. A significant reduction in soil microbial biomass carbon and enzyme activities was caused by 8 and 10 dS m-1 as compared to 0.35 dS m-1 at different growth stages of crops. Treatment F4 attained the highest soil microbial activity at each crop growth stage by a significant margin among all of the fertilizer treatments, which is associated with a substantial build-up of organic carbon and available NPK in the soil. Soil microbial activities followed a particular trend: at 35 and 75 days after sowing>harvest>sowing in pearl millet and wheat, respectively. Sewage sludge dumping is a major problem in India, and the present study suggests that by applying sewage sludge, soil biological health is improved; therefore its use in agriculture is recommended to farmers.
