Opis:
New composite materials were obtained based on chitosan iodide and organic dyes – methylene blue and fuchsine in fucorcin (Castellani liquid) – by using a simple synthetic procedure. The materials were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and visible and ultraviolet light spectroscopy. The dyes in the composites were distributed uniformly and did not form separate phases. These composites could form structured porous sponges and films and therefore be used in various fields of application. The materials displayed antibacterial activity against antibiotic resistant gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Synthesis of nanocomposite chitosan-TiO2 have been done. Nanocomposite made of chitosan was isolated from crab shell namely α-chitosan and squid pens as β-chitosan. Nanocomposite was synthesized by combining the function of chitosan as supporting material with TiO2 particle that have high photocatalytic activity. The nanocomposite characterized by FTIR and SEM/EDX analysis show the functional groups of chitosan and and also surface morphology of nanocomposite chitosan-TiO2. The FTIR spectra shows adsorption band of O-Ti-O at 677-695 cm-1, and characteristic adsorption band of chitosan at wavenumbers 1600 cm-1 for -NH2 and 3400 cm-1 for -OH. From SEM/EDX analysis can be seen that TiO2 has been distributed evenly on surface of chitosan. The nanocomposite was applied for photodegradation of methylene blue in aqueous medium on UV light radiation. The optimum percent photodegradation at wavelength 660 nm by the nanocomposite α-chitosan-TiO2 and β-chitosan-TiO2 are 59,48% and 59,82%, respectively.

Para-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB), a hazardous and toxic substance, is widely used as an intermediary in chemical industries. p-CNB can cause methaemoglobinaemia due to electron-withdrawing properties of the nitro and chlorine groups. We present a case of a 23-year-old man suffering from thermal burns and p-CNB poisoning. In this case, severe methaemoglobinaemia was caused by the absorption of p-CNB through the burn wounds. Despite active treatment, such as the antidote of methylene blue, the patient’s methaemoglobinaemia progressed, with slowly increasing methaemoglobin (MetHb) level. This case highlights the complexity and difficulty of managing this type of injury. To our knowledge, this case can be the first case report describing methaemoglobinaemia induced by p-CNB in a patient with thermal burns.

The removal of organic dyes from industrial wastewater remains a problem, both technically and economically. In this study, Yarrowia lipolytica yeast cells were isolated from poultry meat and immobilized using alginate. The immobilized Yarrowia lipolytica yeast was used as biosorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from synthetic effluent water. The results show that maximum adsorption capacity under optimum conditions was 66.67 mg∙g-1. The equilibrium adsorption data fitted well onto the Freundlich adsorption isotherms with R2>0.99. Adsorption kinetics was of pseudo-second order process suggesting that the adsorption was a chemisorption. FTIR spectra identified typical absorption bands of a biosorbent. Sorption of MB dye on Yarrowia lipolytica yeast cells was exothermic with weak sorption interaction.

A batch system investigated the application of two types of chemically modified biosorbents derived from spent grated coconut (Cocos nucifera) powder to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The biosorbents were characterised by spectroscopic and quantitative analyses. The assessment of MB adsorption onto the investigated biosorbents was studied at different experimental conditions with different pHs (2–9) and different initial concentrations of MB (10–400 mg/L) at three different temperatures (298, 308, and 318 K). The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of xanthated spent grated coconut (XSGC) was higher than that of hexane-washed spent grated coconut (HSGC). The thermodynamic study indicated that the MB adsorption process was spontaneous for both biosorbents. Desorption of MB-loaded biosorbents was carried out using HCl, NaOH, and Na2EDTA solutions. A desorption ratio of more than 90% was obtained over three adsorption/desorption cycles for HSGC. However, XSGC demonstrated poor MB desorption, implying a stronger MB interaction with XSGC, which could be attributed to H-bonding, Yoshida H-bonding, n-π, and π-π bonding. The study showed that HSGC and XSGC could be applied as biosorbents to remove low MB concentrations from aqueous solutions.

The effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on Gram-positive bacterium Staphylocccus aureus was studied. Methylene blue (MB) at non-toxic concentration of 31.25µg/ml was used as a photosensitizer. LEDs diodes were used as a light source to study the effect of methylene blue alone and the MB-gold nanoparticle mixture on the viability of S. aureus cells. Biogenic gold nanoparticles (biolAuNPs, 10ppm) and chemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (chemAuNPs, 3ppm) were tested as enhancement agents. In the presence of MB alone as a photosensitizer, the killing effect was about 92% after 30min of irradiation. The aPDT therapy was enhanced by addition of biolAuNPs and chemAuNPs and killing rate of S. aureus was 95-96% after 30min of irradiation. The probable mechanism of enhancement of MB-mediated photodynamic bactericidal efficacy against S. aureus in the presence of gold nanoparticles is discussed leading to the conclusion that colloidal gold increases the accumulation of MB in bacterial cells.

Synthetic dyes are widely used in the rubber, textiles, plastics, paper and cosmetics industries to color their products. The effectiveness of adsorption for dye removal from wastewater has made it an ideal alternative to other expensive treatment methods. This study investigates the physicochemical properties of animal-bone- (AB) and corncob- (CC) derived activated carbon on the removal of methylene blue dye. The effects of condition variables such as initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and contact time were studied. The results show that animal-bone-derived activated carbon has better potential for dye removal than does the corn cob-derived equivalent. AB revealed a higher adsorption capacity of intensity (2.40) and is of higher surface area - 500 m2g–1, while CC has adsorptive capacity of 1.25, intensity of 2.80 and surface area of 420 m2/g–1. What is more, the removal efficiency increases as adsorbent dose increases. This makes it an interesting option for dye removal from aqueous solutions of dye.

Modification of Java bentonite assists by the multi-step intercalation of sodium and ammonium ions under low-temperature preparation. The adsorbent was examined to remove rhodamine B and methylene blue dyes in an aqueous solvent. The analysis of structural changes conducted by XRD analysis showed the peak shifting from 19.89° to 16.1° and specific peak spectra FTIR of 2846.93 cm-1 due to increase basal spacing from ammonium intercalation. The total capacities of NH-bentonite, Na-bentonite, and Natural Bentonite adsorption to rhodamine B were 192.308 mg/g, 136.936 mg/g, and 116.279 mg/g, respectively, under acidic conditions. Furthermore, the total capacities of NH-bentonite, Na-bentonite, and Natural Bentonite adsorption to methylene blue were 270.27 mg/g, 158.73 mg/g, and 136.986 mg/g, respectively, under alkaline conditions. The adsorption mechanism described that the rhodamine B and methylene blue removal occurred endothermically, was feasible, and adhered to the kinetics model of pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm. It concluded that the modified Java Bentonite from multi-step intercalation is affordable and effective as wastewater treatment.

The objective of this work is to evaluate the removal of methylene blue dye by bio-polishing sludge-based adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized according to the specific surface area, pH upon the treatment and surface functional groups. The adsorption of dye was carried out at room temperature, and the adsorption data were analyzed using the isotherm and kinetics models. The bio-polishing sludge is rich in ash content, and the presence of surface functional groups varied with the treatment strategies. The specific surface area of adsorbents is between 7.25 and 20.8 m2 /g. Results show that the maximum removal of methylene blue by sludge adsorbents was observed to have the following order: untreated sludge (SR) > zinc chloride-treated (SZ) > microwave-dried (SW) = potassium carbonate-treated (SK) > acid-washed (SH). The maximum adsorption capacities for SR and SZ as predicted by the Langmuir model are 170 and 135 mg/g, respectively. Although SR demonstrates a higher maximum removal than SZ, the latter exhibits greater removal intensity and rate constant even at high dye concentration. The bio-polishing sludge is a promising adsorbent for dye wastewater treatment.

Nano-sized Y- Ag doped and co-doped TiO2 particles were synthesized using the sol–gel method and Ti(OBu)4 as TiO2 precursor. Their structural and optical properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. The photocatalytic activity of these materials was investigated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction under visible light irradiation. Ground state diffuse reflectance absorption studies reveal that both Y and Ag dopant cause deviations of the band gap to higher energies attesting that co-doping the TiO2 with Y and Ag could enhance the photocatalytic activity by delaying the electron–hole recombination by means of higher energy band gaps. Co-doping TiO2 at a level of 4% (Y, Ag) samples leads to a significant decrease in the crystallite size of photocatalyst and containing both anatase and Ag/AgCl components. However, the high photocatalytic performance is attributed to an efficient electron-hole pairs separation at the photocatalyst interfaces in addition to localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag particles. The development of these visible light- activated nanocatalysts has the potential of providing environmentally benign routes for water treatment.

The maximum color removal of 96% and COD removal of 72% were achieved after 5 h in the presence of TiO2/MWCNT and H2O2 under UVA-LED irradiation. The kinetic studies obey pseudo-first order kinetics which is discussed in terms of the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model. This study revealed that TiO2/MWCNT has improved the photocatalytic activity when compared to that of bare TiO2 under similar conditions. UVA-LED could be an alternative light source for the replacement of the conventional UV light for the photocatalytic treatment of reactive dyes.

Opis:
A novel efficient adsorbent, alkali-pretreated Paeonia ostii seed coats (AP-PSC), was investigated for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from solution. Orthogonal array design was applied to optimize the process parameters viz. alkali concentration, liquid-solid ratio (LSR) and pretreatment time. The results revealed that the optimal pretreatment conditions were at 0.8% (w/w) NaOH with LSR of 0.35 L g–1  treating for 50 min. Equilibrium and kinetic studies indicated that Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order models described the experimental data well. The maximum adsorption capability was of 368.2 mg g–1  for MB at 25°C. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the AP-PSC adsorption process was physical, endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the adsorption process was influenced by several interactive mechanisms, including ion-exchange, as well as Van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds that occur concomitantly. It was concluded that AP-PSC may be potential as an efficient adsorbent to remove MB from solution.
