Opis:
The paper tackles the theme of retrospection in the works of Teresa Lubkiewicz-Urbanowicz, based on her short story Dzitwa from the collection of short stories Babskie Nasienie. Vilnius Region was presented as a land where the author returns in a physical and metaphorical sense. Rakuciniszki – “the little homeland” – is a symbolic place for Teresa Lubkiewicz-Urbanowicz, and it was also desribed as such by the author. The nature and sensual perception play a special role in the narrative. The origin of the work should be considered the desire to define one’s identity, the search for answers to existential questions, as well as the need to consolidate the Eastern borderland area.

The paper reports on a comparative corpus-based semantic analysis of one colour term as it is used in two languages: English yellow and Polish żółty. The investigation of central and peripheral meanings, based on analyses of corpus concordances draws upon the methodology and constructs of cognitive linguistics, such as prototype-based categories, domains, conceptual metonymy and metaphor. The first objective of this parallel study is to determine the prototypical reference points for yellow and żółty, followed by descriptions of those motivations and mechanisms of meaning extensions which lead to ‘figurative’ usages. The results are tentatively suggested in the form of a general network of related meanings, the entrenchments of which are established on the basis of frequencies attested in samples of 1,500 citations. The outcomes confirm a conceptual proximity reflected in the semantics of these colour terms, which seems to be - perhaps surprisingly - incongruous with the popular association of yellow/żółty with the sun. As the evidence provided by the British National Corpus and the Polish Scientific Publishers' corpus (PWN) reveals, the central and peripheral readings are inspired by the imagery of autumnal and physiological changes, while the semantics of both yellow and żółty reflect the significant influence of cultural factors, unparalleled in the polysemies of the other five basic colour terms.

Opis:
The article comprises the analysis of the metaphorical field 'Appearance' in the Russian and Polish languages. In this respect, the authoress singles out the subgroups which are productively enriched by figurative naming units. It is emphasized, among other things, that figurative naming units are regular not in naming vitally important human organs, but in the nomination of those parts of the body which reveal diversity from one human to another and can be evaluated from the point of view 'attractive / unattractive'. The contrastive analysis in the linguocultural aspect leads to the conclusion that representatives of both ethnic groups demonstrate a more or less homotypic ideal of a good-looking person. The differences are related to the degree of spread of certain types of appearances among the Russian and the Polish. The special attention is given to the fact that evaluative image-metaphor is concentrated mainly in the high-flown or, vice versa, in the low colloquial styles of speech, in which the expressive function is a dominant one. It is also of the great importance that, regardless the styles of speech, metaphors in both languages are formed by the same models, largely homotypic in the languages in question. The usage of the specific metaphorical naming units is connected with the cultural characteristics of the two nations as well as with their specific perception of the world as a whole.

The aim of the study was to identify 8 – 9 and 9 – 10-year-old children’s knowledge of the following topic: target domain of the metaphorical mapping (JOY, SADNESS, LOVE, HATRED, FEAR) as well as childlike metaphorical accomplishments related to identification of similarities and diff erences between destination domain and source metaphor domain through the process of educational environment construction. In designed didactical intervention operations, research data resulted from participant observation, focus interview, and children’s production analysis (graphical visualization, paired-associate learning tasks and tests of unfinished tasks). Research findings show children’s preferences related to the translation of one metaphor discipline through another one as well as construction strategies related to children’s knowledge about the emotional aspect and feelings. Moreover, findings suggest the need for a broader understanding of educational environments in Polish educational culture.

The purpose of the article is the conceptualisation of metaphor in the framework of semiotics and analysis using methods of analogy and transference. One of the main problems of metaphor theory is to provide means to represent the process of metaphor generation for understanding the nature of the phenomenon. The use of the offered methods in metaphor generation and interpretation opens up a multifaceted understanding of the object under study.

This article looks at the semantic space of abstract and concrete concepts from the perspective of distributed models of conceptual representations. It focuses on abstract metaphorical classes and the mechanisms through which these concepts are processed. When the metaphor X is a Y is understood, X is included in the abstract metaphorical class of Y. This metaphorical class is abstract because the most of semantic features of Y are filtered out through a suppressive-oriented mode of processing. It is suggested that abstract metaphorical classes of living things are usually defined by a single or a very small set of semantic features. Therefore, such metaphorical classes are highly abstract. On the other hand, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things are defined by a relatively larger cluster of semantic features. Therefore, abstract metaphorical classes of nonliving things have a relatively higher degree of concreteness compared to those of living things. In other words, abstract metaphorical classes of living things and nonliving things are rather different in terms of nature and the structure of semantic space.

The analysis has been made from different perspectives such as: historical, lexical and semantic. All the results of the article are closely related to our dissertation and based on many scientific works dedicated to the similar linguistic topics. Purpose. The purpose of the article is a more precise study of the TIME concept and its metaphorization in the English literature texts. It is very important to understand the historical formation of the process as well as its correlation with lexical and semantic aspects of the linguistic. Methods. The first method of the research is the comparative analysis of different linguists’ statement about such a phenomenon as metaphor or metaphorization. The second method is the descriptive analysis of the historical background of the TIME concept formation. The third method is the analysis of the English literature texts in order to find some lexical, semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, syntactic, linguistic and psycholinguistic patterns for the TIME concept metaphorization in this kind of texts. Results. Specific metaphor properties are the reason why a very important role in a language is dedicated to the metaphor. Language embodiment of new concepts and a creation of new linguistic manners is a direct consequence of the metaphorization process. Certain linguistic forms are a place of a realization of cognitive reality images. These images are based on a metaphorical transference. The development of the TIME concept part named as time calculation had started in early English period (XIV – XV centuries). The TIME concept has been The metaphorization phenomenon in the English literature texts. Actualization of the time concept through the metaphorical realization process metaphorically realized very differently. The metaphorization depends on the period of the English history. Modern metaphorical realization of the TIME concept has changed many times but the basic metaphorical associations remained non deformed. There are prepositions which classified by the agentic / non-agentic feature. It’s been made in order to understand time properties and in order to find correlation between the TIME concept and other aspects of the textual reality. The analysis of the chosen material has led to the distinction of five predicate groups such as: activity, location, status, quality and process. The classification of the prepositions was made in the research. They were distinguished according to the predicates. As a result models of the TIME concept description have been made. It proofs the fact that the TIME concept might be realized as the agentive, objective and dative. The using of the ‘time’ lexeme as a living initiator of the action is syntactically reasoned. This action causes the personification of time in the English culture.

This procedure allows for an analysis of the relationship between pre-theoretical views (conduit, container metaphor) and theoretical ones (transfer metaphor). The author suggests how the introduction of the diachronic perspective to the study of defining of communication helps to better understand the genesis of the modern understanding of communication practices.

Opis:
This article looks at metaphor aptness from the perspective of the class-inclusion model of metaphor comprehension and those models that assume a componential nature for the meanings of concepts. When the metaphor X is a Y is processed, the concept of X is included in a metaphorical class that is represented by Y, which is usually the most typical member of the metaphorical class. Degree of saliency of the defining feature in the vehicle and the extent to which this feature matches a relevant dimension of topic is the key factor in the degree of aptness of the metaphor. Degree of aptness becomes more complex in those metaphors that describe an abstract concept in terms of another concept. These metaphors include X into a metaphorical class through the mediation of those concepts that are associated to the abstract concept. If the associated concepts have a high degree of typicality in the metaphorical class, they could be better mediators for including the abstract concept into the metaphorical class. The variations of abstract concepts across individuals and their dependency on contexts and cultures could explain why such metaphors may have different degrees of aptness for different people.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the study of the metaphorical modus of the English-language ethical concept DIGNITY. The aim of the study is to highlight the metaphorical range of the analyzed concept. The article outlines the boundaries of the three main dimensions of the concept: logical, conceptual and structural. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between the terms “concept” and “category”, the relationship between which is nonlinear. On the one hand, the category includes similar concepts. Moreover, the classifiers of the category are categorical domains, which in relation to another frame of reference – the conceptosphere, are independent concepts. On the other hand, the concept is broader than the category of the same name, as it includes those “optional” features for the category that may undergo bidirectional metaphorical rethinking. The article substantiates the conclusion that the category is a logical dimension of the concept existence. This conceptual dimension exists in the linguistic picture of the world in the form of a fixed and relatively stable information gestalt. It is noted that such stability is possible only in static existence, i.e. in the category representation in the mental lexicon and its verbalization within the language system, which is not characteristic of its real unfolding in the form of a concept during its actualization in speech. This unfolding of the category takes it out of the logical dimension into the conceptual one, transforming it from a category into a concept. In addition, the specificity of the studied abstract concept is determined. It is established that the subject of classification of ethical categories are not material objects but phenomena that have an ideal, speculative origin and are manifested in relation to other mental spaces. Also, the article defines the foundations of the theory of conceptual metaphor. It is noted that the basis of the conceptual dimension is cross-domain projections, which are based on metaphorical transfer due to the associative connections that arise between the elements of the conceptual grid (frame), which is part of a concept. The article highlights the conceptual parcels based on the analysis of lexical and semantic variants of its representative unit dignity. The metaphorical range of the DIGNITY concept is highlighted and source domains are identified, the features of which are projected onto the target domain. The frequency of involvement of individual parcels of the concept in metaphorical mappings is determined. The categorical relations of DIGNITY conceptual domains are analyzed.

There are quite numerous taboo words in Dutch which, because of sexual, religious or political reasons, are passed over in linguistic communication. Instead of taboo words one uses euphemisms. This research paper concerns euphemisms which are used in order to substitute taboo words; some of them are phraseologisms. At first, they are divided on the basis of Roberta Rada’s criteria into metaphorical, metonymical, and synecdochic, then the Dutch euphemisms under investigation are further subdivided into the following three types of equivalence in Polish: full, partial, and descriptive. What may seem striking is the fact that euphemistic phraseology of the equivalence type I and II is the most numerous, while the equivalence of type III occur rather seldom. The investigated corpus contains 77 euphemisms. Equivalence to Type I includes 29 examples, which represent 37.66% of the analysed corpus. Equivalence to Type II includes 37 items, which represent 48.05% of the corpus, and the equivalence to Type III—11 euphemistic expressions, which form 14.28% of the analysed corpus. The results seem to prove that the non-genetic relationship between the Nl. and Pl. is also reflected in the low correlation between euphemistic phraseology of these two languages. Another fact important in this context is that to Pl. have the same meaning and the same imagery.
