Opis:
The recovery of valuable metals from metallurgical slag disposals is a promising option to protect natural resources, limited due to technology development and increased consumption. The Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials within the Raw Materials Supply Group has proposed a list of critical elements which have the greatest economic importance and meet the requirements of sustainable development in Europe. The goal of this study was to examine steelmaking- and blast-furnace slags from metallurgical processes to determine concentrations of elements of the greatest criticality for Poland, e.g. Nb, Ta and REE, and to discuss the viability of their recovery. Slag analyses indicate enrichment of REE relative to UCC, NASC and average chondrite compositions in blast-furnace slags and Nb and Ta in steelmaking slags. To make recovery of these critical elements reasonable and profitable, it is recommended that they be recovered together with other useful raw materials.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary results of research on the use of certain smelting slags in the process of modification of casting alloys, leading to a change in the structure of these alloys and improvement of their mechanical and operational properties. the positive effect of ground copper slag with a fraction below 0.1 mm on the effect of modifying the hypoeutectic silumin AlSi7Mg towards changing the morphology of coarse-grained eutectic to fine-dispersive was demonstrated. the modifying effect also applies to the pre-eutectic α phase and results in the formation of additional crystallization sites (nucleation process), which was demonstrated by the thermal ATD solidification analysis, showing an increase in the temperature Tliq and TE max. The positive and noticeable influence of the mixture of copper and steel slag on the surface modifying effect of fragmentation of the structure was demonstrated in casting nickel superalloy IN-713C. Based on the results of research conducted so far on the modifying effect of cobalt aluminate, a hypothetical model of the impact of reduced metallic components of the applied metallurgical slags on the nucleation process and shaping of the microstructure of nickel alloys was developed.

Opis:
Surface phenomena play a major role in metallurgical processes; their operation results, among others, from the surface tension of liquid oxidic systems. One of the methods of determining surface tension of oxidic systems is performing calculations with Butler’s method. Surface tension was calculated for two- and three-component liquid oxidic systems typical of metallurgical processes. The determined dependence of surface tension in FeO-SiO2 at temp. 1773 K and CaO-SiO2 at temp.1873 K showed that with the growing participation of SiO2 surface tension decreased. Analogous calculations were performed for three-component systems: CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 and MnO-Al2O3- SiO2. The results of calculations of surface tension were determined for temp. 1873 K and compared with the results obtained by T. Tanaka et al. [19]. In both cases the increase of Al2O3 content resulted in a growth of surface tension. The simulation results were higher than experimental result, as compared to the literature data.

Opis:
The presence of made grounds containing industrial waste materials in the natural environment presents a potential ecological threat. Therefore, in the present study we examined the indirect effects of selected made grounds on the aquatic flora and fauna. The subject of the study were aqueous extracts from made grounds containing metallurgical slags and their effect on the survival of the crustacean daphnia (Daphnia magna) and the inhibition of growth of the plant duckweed (Lemna minor). Due to the fact that duckweed is also used for phytoremediation, the solution after the contact with the plant was assessed for changes of toxicity using the toxicological enzymatic bioassay employing bacteria (Allivibrio fischeri). It was found that the extracts of made grounds adversely affect both the survival of the crustaceans and the growth of plants, however, despite the inhibition of the growth of duckweed it has the ability to phytoremediate contaminants present in the made grounds.

Opis:
In the present paper, the results from investigations regarding interfacial tensions present at the borders of a liquid aluminum alloy and two selected melted fluxes (mixtures of salts) are presented. The fluxes feature solidification characteristic curves that are very close to each other as well as differentiated chemical compositions. For the comparative investigations, the so-called surface property index (WS) is calculated for both fluxes with the use of the ion theory of slags. The investigations of the interfacial tensions were conducted on a stand that enabled the measurement of the force values accompanying the tearing-off of the probe from the interfacial surface. A very clear relationship between the interfacial tension values and the WS index values that characterize both fluxes was found. An increase in the WS index value resulted in an increase in the investigated interfacial tension values. It was also found that, in both cases under investigation, an increase in the system temperature value resulted in an increase of the values of the interfacial tensions present within. In the conclusion, we state that the metallurgical treatments (for instance, the recycling of the cast metal composite materials by way of component separation) should be conducted with the use of salt mixtures (fluxes) characterized with WS index and melting temperature values as low as possible.
