Opis:
Concentrations of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC), soluble carbohydrates, starch, sucrose, glucose, fructose, raffinose, galactose, stachyose, mannitol and specific activities of soluble acid (AI) and neutral (NI) invertases, sucrose synthase (SuSy), hexokinase (HK), fructokinase (FK), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) were analyzed in fine roots of Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh growing at a polluted site (near copper smelters) and a control site (free from heavy pollution). Also chemical properties of the soil from both sites were assessed. In comparison with the control, fine roots from the polluted site contained greater concentrations of TNC, soluble sugars, starch and sucrose but less hexoses, so they had higher values of sucrolysis index (sucrose/hexoses). The activity of AI, NI and SuSy declined insignificantly, while specific activities of HK, FK, GAPDH and G6PDH were significantly inhibited. The results suggest that a long-term heavy metal stress leads to an accumulation of carbohydrates and altering activities of glycolysis and the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway in fine roots.

This article discusses the idea and set-up of a laboratory system for generating reproducible concentrated occupational aerosols containing metal compounds. Dust representatives for 2 metal-machining workstations (an electric grinder and an electric disc cutter) were released from a fluidized-bed generator, and then sampled and compared in respect to concentration, particle size distribution, particle morphology and the content of metal elements (Fe, Al, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mg). The results indicate the presence of a significant number of irregularly-shaped respirable particles. Those particles contained mainly Fe and Al, and their composition was shown to depend on particle size. The proposed system of aerosol generation and collection can be used in studies of interactions between airborne particles and a model lung surfactant.

These compounds were screened for in vitro antibacterial activities against six pathogenic bacteria, such as Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli, Bacilus subtilis, Sarcina lutea, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas arioginosa. The antibacterial activity was determined by the disc diffusion method using DMSO as solvent. The results indicate that (SGC) compound exhibit a significant antibacterial activity, depending on the bacterial strain and (SGCo)2, (SGN)2 and (SGZ)2 compounds show a moderate sensitivity even with higher doses. All these compounds were found to possess cytotoxic effect.

The effects of pollution on the biodiversity and genome response of Chironomidae larvae (Diptera, Insect) were evaluated in the trace metal contaminated water environments. No change on the Chironomid species diversity was found. The higher concentrations of trace metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, and Zn) affect the genome of 5 cytogenetically studied Chironomid species: Chironomus bernensis, C. plumosus, C. sp.1. Kiefferulus tendipediformis (cytotype 2), Glyptotendipes cauliginellus (syn. Glyptotendipes gripekoveni). Genome instability of Chironomid larvae was manifested by two ways: 1. Fixed chromosome rearrangements; homozygous inversions and tandem fusions created new gene linkage groups and show an intensive microevolutionary process of species. 2. Somatic structural (inversions, deficiencies, deletions, breaks); and functional alterations (decreasing the activity of the key structures: Balbiani rings (BRs) and Nucleolar Organizer (NOR)) in salivary gland chromosomes of cytogenetically studied Chironomidae species. Detecting somatic rearrangements in salivary gland chromosomes of these widely distributed aquatic insects is potentially one of the best validated bioassay and can be used as a cost effective early warning signals of environmental damage in freshwater basins.

Opis:
High concentration of heavy metals in organic soils may be the result of intensive, deep-seated fires causing high temperatures. This research has been carried in four postfire areas, located in forests or on meadows in Lower Silesia. The aim has been to determine the impact of some parameters on the content of heavy metals in soils under postfire meadows and forests. The concentration and pool of the analyzed heavy metals were determined in soils against the background of such parameters as the depth in a horizon, organic matter content, soil colour and soil reaction. Twenty Histosol soil profiles (85 soil samples) were analyzed, representing peat-muck, muck (MtIIc1, MtIIIc1) and mineral-mucky (Me11) and on-muck soils (according to the Polish taxonomy of soils). The soils were strongly desiccated. Some physicochemical and chemical properties of pyrogenic soils were analyzed in dry samples collected into plastic bags with an Instorfu auger. Heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr) were determined in HCl + HNO3. Pools of heavy metals were recalculated into g m–2 in 0-20 cm layers of soils and compared among forest and meadow soils. Due to intensive fires, the reaction of pyrogenic soils was slightly acid, neutral or alkaline. As a consequence of the high temperatures, a broad spectrum of soil colours was noticed. The results showed increased concentrations of heavy metals in the topmost and muddy soil horizons. The alkaline soil reaction favoured accumulation of heavy metals. Pools of heavy metals in soils were significantly lower in forest than in meadow areas, which could be attributed to different time periods which elapsed since the fires. The Hue tint of the colour of soil horizons containing ashes indicated the presence of oxidized iron forms and a low content of organic carbon. The accumulation of heavy metals in post-fire sites in Lower Silesia was negatively correlated with the soil’s strongly acid reaction. The determined concentrations of heavy metals did not exceed the threshold values set for unpolluted soils
Łącznie przeanalizowano 20 profilów płytkich gleb: torfowo-murszowych, murszowych (MtIIc1, MtIIIc1), murszowatych (Me11) i namurszowych (85 próbek glebowych). Właściwości fizykochemiczne i chemiczne gleb popożarowych oznaczono w próbkach suchych pobranych świdrem Instorf do plastikowych woreczków.

The paper characterises total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn in the surface layers (0-20 cm) of agricultural soils in Poland (48620 soils samples) and Lublin region (3829 soil samples). The results for Lublin region are expressed in terms of the degree of metal pollution as compared to contamination in the rest of the country. The average concentration of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn (in mg kg-1 of soil) in the A horizon of agricultural soils in Poland and in Lublin region (values in parenthesis) are as follows: 0.21 (0.17); 6.5 (4.9); 6.2 (6.6); 13.6 (10.7); 32.4 (23.3). About 79% of the agricultural soils in Poland are characterised by a natural (0°) content of heavy metals while 17.6% contain elevated level (10) of these metals. In the Lublin region it is 91.9% and 6.7%, respectively. About 3% of the Polish soils (1.4% in the Lublin region) exhibit various degrees of contamination with heavy metals. This includes heavy (IV0) and very heavy pollution (V0) which is found in up to 0.4% of the agricultural land and up to 0.2% in the Lublin region.

Opis:
PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are widespread in the natural environment. They are suspected to have mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic effect on our organisms. Production of wholesome and high quality vegetables does not necessarily involve selection of adequate farmlands or substrates used for vegetable growing. Combustion processes are a source of PAHs in the soil and air. Excessive levels of PAHs are accumulated when the balance between their decomposition in soil and supply from other sources is disrupted. The objective of the present research has been to evaluate the effect of anthracene and pyrene on the concentration of selected trace elements in butter lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), cultivar Vilmorin, grown on substrates with different nutrient abundance. A pot experiment in four replications was carried out twice in the spring of 2007 and 2008. The pots were maintained in a greenhouse at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Lettuce was grown under the minimum (optimum) and triple (II fertilization level) substrate abundance in nutrients. In the second variant o the experiment, when the nutrient abundance was elevated, nitrogen was split into two doses: 2/3 of the whole rate were added before planting lettuce seedlings, and 1/3 of the rate was introduced 10 days afterwards. In the first variant, when the nutrient abundance was minimal, all of the nitrogen was added in a single dose. Spraying the lettuce plants with anthracene (ANT), pyrene (PYR0 or their mixture started 10 days after planting. Foliar introduction of the tested PAHs continued for 25 days (in the amount of 1.8 cm3 day–1 at a concentration of 100 mg dm–3) until the vegetative season finished. At the same time, an identical total amount of the PAHs was added to soil as aqueous solution, at 7-day intervals, according to the same pattern. Determinations of the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn, Mn) was performed with the ASA method, having first mineralised (HClO4+HCl+HNO3) the plant material which had been dried at 60oC. The determinations were compared with certified material (CTA-VTL-2). Concentrations of the trace elements in butter lettuce were significantly varied depending on the experimental factors. A more abundant substrate significantly raised the levels of Cd, Zn and Mn, but had no effect on concentrations of Cu, Ni and Cr. The way the PAHs were applied did not have any influence on modifications in the determined levels of the metals. Out of the two analysed PAHs, anthracene, especially when applied to soil, increased the concentrations of Zn nd Cr in lettuce leaves.
Spośród testowanych WWA, szczególnie antracen aplikowany doglebowo zwiększał zawartość Zn i Cr w liściach testowanej rośliny.

The scalp hair has been suggested as a potentially valuable tissue, where short-term variation are averged out. Besides, hair has been demonstrated to be a major vehicle for the excretion of toxic metals, which concentration may be to 10 times higher than the amount found in blood or urine. Undoubtedly, hair analysis is a non-invasive method of diagnosis. The content of metals in hair depends on many factors. Hair samples (N = 416) were collected between the years 2003 and 2004 from Middle Pomerania (north Poland) population. Cu was determined by the electro-thermal graphite furnance AAS method. Hair from Middle Pomerania people contented in average 12.7 μg g-1 (range 5.2-32.0 μg g-1). The level of copper in hair was the function of age, sex, obesity, nutrition and disease, but was not the function of stature and weight. The obtained results were confirmed in comparison with the findings of other authors. Hair analysis might soon become a powerful diagnostic tool in monitoring of environmental exposure and studying the nutritional status of individuals.

The study focused on the influence of an increased copper content in the Murashige and Skoog (1962) solid medium on the in vitro plant growth and development of Dendrobium kingianum Bidwill. Sterile explants of pseudobulbs were used for micropropagation of orchid plants on the MS regeneration medium supplemented with 0.5 mg dm-3 NAA and 1.0 mg dm-3 kinetin. Copper (as CuSO4 × 5H2O) was added to all the combinations in concentrations of 0.025 (control), 0.625, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 mg dm-3. The results showed that the treatments with 1.25 and 2.5 mg dm-3 stimulated the orchid growth and development in in vitro culture. After eight months of growing in in vitro culture, the highest number of shoots, the longest roots and the heaviest fresh weight of plantlets were obtained in these treatments. In medium with the highest copper concentration (5.0 mg dm-3), a negative influence of the metal on the length of roots and fresh weight of orchids was noted. Spectrophotometric analysis (ASA) showed that the copper and iron accumulation increased in both shoots and roots with the increase in the external Cu level, whereas the zinc and calcium accumulation in these organs decreased. The copper and zinc accumulation in the roots was about 1.5-2.5 times higher than in the shoots, but the iron accumulation was about 3-3.5 times higher. The calcium accumulation in roots was only 5-12% higher than in shoots.

Ruditapes decussatus and Venerupis pullastra are commercially fished clams with a wide distribution in the shallow inshore waters of Lake Timsah, Egypt. They are usually contaminated with heavy metals. Consumption of such contaminated clams can pose a public health risk. To minimize this risk, therefore, the clams should be removed from the contaminated waters and transferred to an approved area to reduce the high levels of metals before being marketed. The aim of this work was to study the effect of transplantation on levels of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu,Ni, Co,Cd,Pb) in these clams. The clams were removed from their polluted site and transplanted to a relatively clean area for a period of 120 days. Although the salinity at the transplantation site was higher than at the polluted site, it was stable and did not appear to have any adverse effect on clam growth. Heavy metals were analysed in the water, sediment and clam tissues from both the polluted and the transplantation sites. Although in both species transplantation evidently reduced heavy metal levels, these still exceeded the maximum permissible levels laid down by the WHO (1982).

Opis:
In order to investigate the effect of zinc, iron and manganese fertilization on Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations in the stem and leaves and on the chlorophyll content in leaves of soybean at different reproductive growth stages, two experiments were conducted on a research field of the Islamic Azad University of Kermanshah, Iran, during the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons. The experimental design consisted of a factorial experiment based on the randomized complete block method with three replicates. The treatments included three levels of Zn (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1), Fe (0, 25 and 50 kg ha-1), and Mn (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1), all applied to soil. At 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing (DAS), the SPAD readings were done on five leaves from each experimental plot for all replicates. Five plants were randomly selected from each plot at the flowering, pod setting, seed filling and maturity stages. Samples washed with distilled water were dried, weighed and incinerated at 550°C. Finally, the Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The results indicated that zinc application had significantly affected Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations in soybean stems at all the sampling times except for the soybean stem Mn concentration at the maturity stage. In contrast, the concentration of Mn at seed filling was unaffected by iron fertilization. Also, the maximum Fe concentration in soybean stems resulting from zinc application was achieved in Zn20 treatment. The highest Zn and Mn concentrations in leaves were recorded when iron was applied in smaller amounts. Furthermore, zinc, iron and manganese applications had significant effects on the leaf chlorophyll concentration during all the growth stages of soybean plants. In addition, increased iron and manganese fertilization raised the soybean leaf chlorophyll concentrations in all the samples. The maximum chlorophyll concentration in soybean leaves at 60 DAS was recorded in Zn20Fe50, Zn20Mn40 and Fe50Mn40 treatments (34.7, 34.0 and 35.2, respectively).

Opis:
The activity in nanotechnology has recently increased enormously. This is due to numerous possible applications of nanomaterials in catalysis, optics, electronics, and even health protection. Many applications of silver and gold nanoparticles are possible because of their plasmonic properties. As an example of the plasmonic application of Au and Ag metal nanoparticles one can mention construction of devices for light concentration at the nanometer scale. Such deep-subwavelength optical energy concentrators are used, for example, in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to increase the Raman signal by even 10 orders of magnitude, thus facilitating the optical identification of single molecules. Large increase in local field intensity also strongly enhances nonlinear scattering, which can be potentially useful for optical signal processing. In this article we review photochemical synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles, especially those methods of synthesis which are driven by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excited in Ag and Au nanoparticles. The most important step of the SPR-driven synthesis of nanoparticles is photocatalytical reduction of metal ions which occurs preferentially at such places of the nanoparticles, at which strong surface plasmons are excited (for example corners, etches). Therefore, during the grown of the nanoparticle, its anisotropy may increase. If the SPR of the seed particles is not excited – due to either the absence of photostimulation or a mismatch between the excitation wavelength and the SPR of the seeds – the deposition of metal does not occur. Therefore, SPR of nanoparticles may be also responsible for wavelength controlled size effects in the synthesis: as the nanoparticles grow and their SPRs shift from the excitation wavelength, the nanoparticles absorb less light and their growth slows. This allows for synthesis of very homogeneous samples of nanoparticles, which may be applied, for example, in various plasmonic sensors.
