Opis:
This work indicates that new and innovative materials used in the construction of floating and stationary marine structures can contribute to increased operational safety in addition to reduced service costs and frequency and other reduced operating costs, including the costs of staff and running maintenance. Such materials include metal-ceramic composites whose properties, such as high resistance to abrasive wear, favourable coefficient of friction, good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion, allow them to be used in tribological pairs in mechanisms, control elements and actuators of various devices operating in marine power plants, thereby increasing their operational reliability. Properties of metal-ceramic composite foams, i.e. vibration and noise damping, good thermal insulation performance, dissipation of electromagnetic waves and absorption of explosive energy, make them ideal for use in shipbuilding and construction of drilling towers, at the same time increasing the levels of comfort during operation. Composite metal-ceramic foams can significantly reduce the effects of fires as they are durable, water-resistant and creep resistant thermal insulators which can limit the destruction (deformation) of steel structures. This paper presents proposals for the application of these materials to selected technical solutions in offshore structures.

Opis:
Slip casting is one of the most popular shaping method in ceramic technology which allows producing a large number of elements in small period of time. This shaping technique gives a possibility to fabricate ceramic or composite materials such as ZrO2-Ti. Ti with its properties (low density, high melting point, high-temperature strength, good corrosion resistance and others) combine with ZrO2 (high flexure strength, high compression resistance and very high KIC) can be considered for different applications as constructional and functional materials. For the preparation of such composite nanometric zirconium oxide powder stabilized by 3 mol% Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. Water-based slurries with 35, 40, 45 and 50 vol.% solid phase content were prepared with 3, 10 and 15 vol.% addition of titanium powder. Zeta potential and pH of prepared slurries were considered. The pH changes were tested as a function of Ti content. The viscosity of the prepared slurries was measured. The sedimentation tests for selected slurries were performed. The casting rate for slurry of 35% solid phase with 10 vol.% Ti was examined. These measurements showed good stability of slurries. With the increasing of the solid phase concentration the density of the green bodies increased. However, the increase of the content of Ti powder reduced the density of green body samples. For selected samples the SEM observations was carried out. Composites produced by slip casting were characterized by a homogenous distribution of Ti particles in the ZrO2 matrix.

Opis:
The development and implementation of the new technologies and materials are one of the conditions allowing improving the aircraft structures. The composite materials enable to reduce the aircraft weight and keep appropriate strength and fatigue properties. Application of the composite materials in the wing elements, and metal alloys in assemblies of the aircraft fuselage requires elaboration of the appropriate method for technology joining metal and composite. Bonding eliminates breakages in the composite plies which are initiated during assembly process of the structure with mechanically fastened joints e.g. bolts [1]. The strength and stiffness of the composite depend on shape and direction of the fibre which carry the tensile and compression stresses. Shear stress and strength of the composite depend on the resin system. Therefore, the use of composites brings more complicated design approach compare to metal. The aim of the study is tofind appropriate method to determine the failure loading of the metal-composite aircraft wing pivot fitting. Numerical and laboratory investigations for metal-composite joints are presented. Interaction between the composite plies is modelled as the contact problem. It allows determining the strain and stress at the contact surfaces and stress concentration fields. Contact modelling technique is also applied to model interface between metal and composite. Engineering approach to the model full-scale co-curing triple stepped lap joint is presented. The professional engineering software tools are used to create accurate models. Tensile tests of the metal-composite joint were carried out to verify the numerical analysis methods.

Opis:
Quality of composite castings with infiltration reinforcement is dependent on many various factors. Technological parameters of the saturation process, manufacturing methods and quality of components are considered as the basic ones. During the recycling process of composite materials, the basic component that is being reclaimed is the metal matrix. The main aim of this paper is an evaluation of chemical composition and microstructure of the recovered metal matrix material. In the first stage, influence of preparation of liquid matrix metal is analyzed, with particular attention paid to its purity, degree of degassing and overheating, as well as an influence of the reinforcing material type on the final structure of composites obtained in the process of vacuum saturation. Specific of the structure and flaws occurring in such materials are of the particular concern here, as they are decisive for the methods of quality evaluation of these materials. Manufactured composite’s castings are subjected to the recycling process by a melting of the metal matrix on the second stage. The metal obtained in this way is analyzed regarding impurities occurring in its volume and, simultaneously, a comparison of evaluation methods of traditional metal alloys and metal composite castings is performed.

A representative volume element (RVE) is a statistical representation of typical material properties. It should contain enough information on the microstructure thereby be sufficiently smaller than the macroscopic structural dimensions. The paper deals with the numerical calculations of the dimensions of the RVE for a two-phase material microstructure. Two and three dimensional models are taken into consideration. The structure of the samples are developed on the base of randomization of elements belonging to one of the phases. The phases volume share is 50/50%. The following series of the models are analyzed: from 10 x 10 to 100 x 100 elements for 2D samples and from 10 x 10 x 10 to 100 x 100 x 100 elements for 3D samples. The element characteristic dimension is 10 jm. The elastic behavior of the base materials (magnesium and alumina) is taken into account. The quasi-static compression tests of the developed structures are carried out with the use of LS-DYNA computer code. The results are presented as the equivalent Young modulus values and compared to the calculations based on the rule of mixtures. The stabilization of the achieved results allows to assess the dimensions of the RVE for two-phase material with random distribution.

Copper have always been an important material and incorporation of elements into copper for property enhancement. Bronze is a relevant cuprous alloy which is important for many industrial and automotive applications like bearings and machineries. The present research is directed towards the fabrication and tribological analysis of regular bronze (Cu-6Sn) and metal matrix composites reinforced with varying particle sized SiC ceramic reinforcement (30, 35 and 40 μm). The developed specimens were subjected to wear analysis according to ASTM standards, to identify the tribological properties utilizing a pin on disk tribometer. It was noted that the wear rates of developed MMC’s phenomenally decremented with an increase in size of SiC particle reinforcement. Also, the test parameters were influential in altering the wear rates to notable margins. The standard scanning electron microscopy techniques aided in identifying the influence of adhesive wear on the specimen surface.

Opis:
The main current of publication is focused around the issues and problems associated with the formation of composite materials with Cu matrix and reinforcing phases in the various carbon nanoforms. The core of the research has been focused on thermal conductivity of these composites types. This parameter globally reflects the state of the structure, quality of raw materials and the technology used during the formation of composite materials. Vanishingly low affinity of copper for carbon, multilayered forms of graphene, the existence of critical values of graphene volume in the composite are not conducive to the classic procedures of composites designing. As a result, the expected, significant increase in thermal conductivity of composites is not greater than for pure copper matrix. Present paper especially includes: (i) data of obtaining procedure of copper/graphene mixtures, (ii) data of sintering process, (iii) the results of structure investigations and of thermal properties. Structural analysis revealed the homogenous distribution of graphene in copper matrix, the thermal analysis indicate the existence of carbon phase critical concentration, where improvement of thermal diffusivity to pure copper can occur.

Light weight, low density with high mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, aluminum is the most important material and is commonly used for high performance applications such as aerospace, military and especially automotive industries. The researchers who participate in these industries are working hard to further decrease the weight of end products according to legal boundaries of greenhouse gases. A lot of research was undertaken to produce thin sectioned aluminum parts with improved mechanical properties. Several alloying element addition were investigated. Yet, nowadays aluminum has not met these expectations. Thus, composite materials, particularly metal matrix composites, have taken aluminum’s place due to the enhancement of mechanical properties of aluminum alloys by reinforcements. This paper deals with the overview of the reinforcements such as SiC, Al2O3 and graphene. Graphene has recently attracted many researcher due to its superior elastic modulus, high fatigue strength and low density. It is foreseen and predicted that graphene will replace and outperform carbon nanotubes (CNT) in near future.

In this study, a combination of two techniques was used for successful fabrication of Mg composite reinforced by NiTi alloy preform. The porous preforms synthesized by Self-propagating Hightemperature Synthesis (SHS) from elemental powders were subsequently infiltrated with Mg by squeeze casting. The effects were examined with scanning electron microscope with EDS detector, X-ray diffraction and microindentation. The inspection has shown well-connected matrix and reinforcement; no reaction at the interface and open porosities fully infiltrated by liquid Mg. Moreover, analysis of samples’ fracture has exhibited that crack propagates inside the Mg matrix and there is no detachment of reinforcement.

In this paper, a mathematical model of electromechanical transduction of Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites is presented. The aim of the research was to create a physics-based, geometrically scalable model to use in control systems. The relation between actuating voltage and the tip displacement was described with a transfer function. The model is derived from the basic physical properties of re-searched materials. To calculate the final transfer function, two impedance models are considered – with and without neglecting the re-sistance of the metal electrodes. In this paper, the model with non-zero electrode resistance is calculated. Later, the model is simplified (taking the physical properties into account) and the numerical values based on the parameters of the samples are calculated. The simpli-fications allow the model to predict the response to low-frequency sine wave actuation. The frequency-domain characteristics of the sam-ples were created experimentally and compared to the model. The results have proven the accuracy of the model.

In this study, the newly designed Al-9Si/SiC particles (SiCp) + Ti-fiber (2step-reinforced Al-9Si alloy matrix) metal matrix composites (MMCs) were fabricated by hot-pressing sintering at 560°C. 2step-reinforced Al-based MMCs were characterized by thermal shrinkage, phase transition, microstructure and tensile strength. The addition of Ti-fiber reduced thermal shrinkage was caused by temperature difference in sintering process as well as enhanced assistance for tensile strength and plastic deformation at room temperature. Experimental results reveal that the 2step-reinforcment sintering by ceramic and metal has a significant effect to increase interface bonding in boundary of each component material and the improved mechanical properties were due to the influence of interfacial product by diffusion. Tensile strength and elongation at room temperature by 2step-reinforcement were improved in 19.5% and 26.2% more than those of Al-9Si/SiCp, respectively. Especially, it reveals that diffusion direction may be varied by sintering methods at low temperature in this study.

Opis:
The increasing needs of using aluminum epoxy composite as a replacement to solid metal rapid prototyping has opened to interests in optimizing its machining processes. This paper reported on the success of optimizing the surface roughness of aluminium epoxy composite using milling process along with a new finding on the best combination parameters. Taguchi method was used as the optimization method whereas spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut were set as input factors using an L9 Orthogonal Array. Analysis of Variance was used to identify the significant factors influencing the surface roughness. Experiment was conducted in dry condition using a vertical milling machine and the surface roughness after the machining was evaluated. Optimum combination of cutting parameters was identified after the finest surface roughness (response) based on the signal-to-noise ratio calculated. Cutting parameters selected after preliminary testing are cutting speeds of (2000, 3000 and 4000) rpm, feed rate (300, 400 and 500) mm/min, and cutting depth (0.15, 0.20, and 0.25) mm. The result showed that cutting speed had the largest percentage contribution to surface roughness with 69% and the second highest contribution was feed rate with 22% and depth of cut at 9%. The spindle speed was found as the most significant factor influencing the quality of surface roughness. The result is significant particularly in providing important guidelines for industries in selecting the right combination of parameters as well as to be cautious with the most significant factor affecting the milling process of metal epoxy composite.

Opis:
In the paper the microstructures of WE43 matrix composites reinforced with carbon fibres have been characterised. The influence of reinforcement type and T6 heat treatment (a solution treatment at 525°C for 8 h, a hot water quench and a subsequent ageing treatment at 250°C for 16 h) on microstructure have been evaluated. The light microscope and scanning electron microscope investigations have been carried out. No significant differences in samples reinforced with non-coated textiles have been reported. The substantial changes in sample reinforced with nickel-coated textile have been observed. The segregation of alloying elements to the matrix-reinforcement layer has been identified. The T6 heat treatment caused the appearance of disperse precipitates of β phase, but the process cannot be considered as satisfactory (irregular distribution, low volume fraction, relatively large size).

Opis:
The paper presents examples of applications for metal composite materials on Al matrix reinforced with ceramic particles in the form of grains, fibre or whiskers in the automotive industry. Highlighted are the advantages and drawbacks of such composite materials and issues involved in shaping complete parts. Presence of hard and brittle ceramic particles in the Al alloy (given their sufficient concentration) significantly impacts on the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the material and its suitability for shaping complete parts and constituting a surface layer (SL) with required properties. In making metal composite materials of Al alloys, various (including the latest) methods of casting are applied, often in combination with press molding in semi-fluid state, as well as powder metallurgy (P/M) methods. The final machining of functionally significant surfaces is done by machining (by all ways and variants). With presence of more than 5% (by volume) ceramic reinforcing particles it becomes necessary to use cutting blades of the so-called super hard materials, including composites of polycristalline diamond and diamond. This considerably increases manufacturing costs. Electrical discharge machining has proved to be an effective way for shaping metal parts, in all its variants: sinker (EDM), wire erosion (WEDM), micromachining (ěEDM), shaping by free electrode (REDM), discharge grinding (AEDM) and other. Cited in the paper are the results of own research connected with EDM and WEDM of Al alloys composite cast and reinforced with particles of Al2O3 (AlSi7Mg + 20%Al2O3) and a composite material produced by powder metallurgy methods (P/M) reinforced with various (maximum 10%) concentrations of Al2O3 or SiC or Si3N4. EDM and WEDM technological characteristics were defined for the studied materials in the form of regressive dependencies as statistical models of given indicators allowing for defining impact of machining parameters on shaping the indicators. In addition, there are selected photos of metallographic structures, enabling observation and evaluation of surface layer phase changes and chemical composition after EDM. The highly enlarged SEM micro-photos which are included show the geometric structure of machined surface, micro-cracks on borders of the composite material grains, presence of minor reinforcement particles adhering to the surface. This confirms the complex nature of electrical discharge machining mechanism taking place locally after very high temperatures and in a very short time, in presence of cold dielectric.

Opis:
Composite materials gain more and more applications thanks to their specific properties and possibilities of shaping of products made out of them. One of the product forming technologies is cutting. Although most metal matrix composites are ready for use after volume shaping e.g. by casting, it is worth to define also possibilities of processing these materials also by this technology. This paper presents possibilities of cutting metal matrix composites and compares existing methods and their application range. The laser cutting of metal matrix composites reinforced with hard ceramic fiber was of particular interest in this work. Preliminary process parameters were determined and quality of obtained cut edges was compared with basic material of the aluminum matrix. This comparison proved that presence of reinforcement negatively affects the quality of the cut surface. However, the laser cutting process is efficient and it allows elastic shaping of metal matrix composites reinforced with hard ceramics.

Aluminium based metal matrix composites are well known for their good wear and erosion resistance, high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They have found applications within the aerospace, military but especially in the automotive industries. The distribution of particles, their size and shape, and volume fraction together with production method determine the structure and properties of the composite. Trials of pressure die casting of AK12-15%SiC were carried out using a cold-chamber pressure machine of pressure force 100 t, in PRESS company, Poland. The article presents the results of the research on composites MMC's reinforced SiC particles after mating in technically dry sliding conditions. Matrix alloy composites AK12 reinforced with SiC particles (10, 25, 50 |im) were tested after collaboration with cast iron. The friction coefficient value and wear resistance in investigated MMCs depend on particle size used as a reinforcement. The friction coefficient and wear value decrease with the reduction of particles diameter.

Opis:
The main aim of this work was to obtain a copper matrix surface composite using friction stir processing (FSP). The reinforced phase was SiC particles with an average size of 5 mm. The effect of the reinforcement on the microstructure, hardness and wear behaviour were analysed. The friction treatment was carried out using a truncated cone-shaped tool with a threaded side surface. Multi-chamber technology was used to produce the composite microstructure in the copper surface layer. Changes in the material microstructure were assessed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Comparative measurement of the hardness of the initial and treated material as well as wear resistance tests were also carried out. A favourable effect of the surface treatment on the microstructure and properties of the copper was found. As a result of the friction treatment there was strong grain refinement in the copper surface layer. The average grain size in the stirring zone was about 3 mm and was over 21 times smaller than the average grain size in the initial material. Intensive dispersion of the SiC particles in the modified layer was also found, leading to the formation of a copper matrix composite. The effect of microstructural changes in the surface layer of the material and formation of the surface composite was an over two-fold increase in the hardness of the material and an increase in wear resistance.

Opis:
The paper presents a numerical analysis method allowing the determination of the degree of failure of an adhesive joint with the use of CAE software. The results of an experimental test are used to describe properties of the joint parts. Described herein is the behaviour of a multi-stepping lap joint of metal with a multilayered fibre composite that is often used in the aircraft industry. Modelling of the contact problem between the metal surface and layer of the composite enables determination of the value of the external tensile load at which the process of failure of the joint begins. The author also proposes a simple method to shape solid finite elements which allows the elimination of the singularity around finite element vertices. The method has been applied to numerical analysis of the joint, in which the layers were stacked at various angle orientations. The influence of the step length of the metal part on the joint strength was also considered. The results of numerical analysis were compared with those of experimental investigations of the joint strength, giving satisfactory agreement.
