W pracy przedstawiono nowe i częściowo opublikowane dane paleo- i petromagnetyczne z mezozoicznych skał węglanowych płaszczowin reglowych dolnej (kriżniańska - Fatricum) i górnej (choczańska - Hronicum) w polskiej części Tatr. Próbki do badań paleomagnetycznych pobrano z 8 stanowisk (środkowy trias-dolna kreda) w płaszczowinie reglowej dolnej i 1 stanowiska (środkowy trias) w płaszczowinie reglowej górnej. Ogółem pobrano 55 niezależnie zorientowanych próbek ręcznych. Wyniki badań zinterpretowano razem z opublikowanymi już danymi z tatrzańskich serii wierchowych i odniesiono do paleomagnetycznej bazy danych z obszaru wschodnich Alp, Karpat i rejonu pannońskiego. Przeprowadzone eksperymenty petromagnetyczne obejmowały badania izotermicznej pozostałości magnetycznej (IRM), parametrów pętli histerezy, analizy termomagnetyczne i pomiary podatności magnetycznej w niskich temperaturach. Wszystkie badane skały uległy przemagnesowaniu. Wiek przemagnesowania zinterpretowano na przedział 113-88 mln lat temu, najprawdopodobniej podczas ruchów płaszczowinowych na obszarze Centralnych Karpat Zachodnich, w czasie trwania długiej zony o normalnej polarności ("Cretaceous Quiet Zone"). W jednym stanowisku (wapienie "biancone" wieku tyton-berias) stwierdzono obecność składowych namagnesowania o mieszanej polarności, które dają pozytywny wynik testu inwersji i zostały wstępnie zinterpretowane jako składowe pierwotne. Jednak zróżnicowane właściwości petromagnetyczne normalnie i odwrotnie namagnesowanych próbek (maksymalne temperatury odblokowujące i parametry pętli histerezy) sprawiają, że kwestia pierwotności namagnesowania pozostaje otwarta. Wyróżnienie syntektonicznego przemagnesowania późnokredowego pozwoliło na określenie położenia warstw w poszczególnych jednostkach tektonicznych podczas ruchów płaszczowinowych. Najliczniejsze i najbardziej wiarygodne dane uzyskano z jednostki wierchowej parautochtonicznej oraz z jednostek kriżniańskich Bobrowca, Suchego Wierchu i Hawrania. Parautochton uległ przemagnesowaniu w pozycji subhoryzontalnej (ą5°), podczas gdy wymienione jednostki reglowe uzyskały namagnesowanie zapadając 10-20° w kierunku S do SW. Wniosek ten może mieć znaczenie przy określaniu mechanizmu transportu płaszczowin reglowych: w tym wypadku wydaje się, że główną rolę odgrywała pozioma kompresja. Jednak w dwóch stanowiskach z innych jednostek kriźniańskich wtórne kierunki przemagnesowania wskazują, że skały zostały przemagnesowane zapadając 20-60° na N. Paleoszerokość Tatr w późnej kredzie wynosiła 30-36°, natomiast na przełomie jury i kredy 21-23°. Paleodeklinacje kierunków mezozoicznych z Tatr wykazują 20-50° prawoskrętnej rotacji w stosunku do platformy europejskiej. Jest to najprawdopodobniej wypadkowa wartość dwóch rotacji o różnym wieku: lewoskrętnej o kąt 60° po oligocenie i prawoskrętnej o kąt 80-110° między cenomanem/turonem a eocenem. Po odjęciu efektów rotacji trzeciorzędowych paleobieguny z Tatr stają się bliskie przedsenońskim paleobiegunom z północnych Alp Wapiennych. Wymienione dwie rotacje najprawdopodobniej objęły również cały blok Centralnych Karpat Zachodnich na Słowacji, jednak ich amplituda mogła być zróżnicowana wskutek efektów lokalnych. Dane paleomagnetyczne wskazują na bliskość Centralnych Karpat Zachodnich i północnych Alp Wapiennych w mezozoiku, natomiast wykazują różnice w stosunku do obszarów zaliczanych do płyty adriatyckiej (Alpy Południowe, Wewnętrzne Karpaty Zachodnie, Północna Pannonia). Zróżnicowane zwroty pokredowych rotacji tektonicznych w Centralnych Karpatach Zachodnich i obszarach położonych bezpośrednio na N i S od nich (tzn. w Wewnętrznych Karpatach Zachodnich i Karpatach Zewnętrznych) wskazują na możliwość rotacji tektonicznych wzdłuż linii pienińskiego pasa skałkowego i szwu oceanu Meliata.

We propose a phylogeny of all major groups of Mesozoic mammals based on phylogenetic analyses of 46 taxa and 275 osteological and dental characters, using parsimony methods (Swofford 2000). Mammalia sensu lato (Mammaliaformes of some authors) are monophyletic. Within mammals, Sinoconodon is the most primitive taxon. Sinoconodon, morganucodontids, docodonts, and Hadrocodium lie outside the mammalian crown group (crown therians + Monotremata) and are, successively, more closely related to the crown group. Within the mammalian crown group, we recognize a fundamental division into australosphenidan (Gondwana) and boreosphenidan (Laurasia) clades, possibly with vicariant geographic distributions during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous. We provide additional derived characters supporting these two ancient clades, and we present two evolutionary hypotheses as to how the molars of early monotremes could have evolved. We consider two alternative placements of allotherians (haramiyids + multituberculates). The first, supported by strict consensus of most parsimonious trees, suggests that multituberculates (but not other alllotherians) are closely related to a clade including spalacotheriids + crown therians (Trechnotheria as redefined herein). Alternatively, allotherians can be placed outside the mammalian crown group by a constrained search that reflects the traditional emphasis on the uniqueness of the multituberculate dentition. Given our dataset, these alternative topologies differ in tree−length by only ~0.6% of the total tree length; statistical tests show that these positions do not differ significantly from one another. Similarly, there exist two alternative positions of eutriconodonts among Mesozoic mammals, contingent on the placement of other major mammalian clades. Of these, we tentatively favor recognition of a monophyletic Eutriconodonta, nested within the mammalian crown group. We suggest that the “obtuse−angle symmetrodonts” are paraphyletic, and that they lack reliable and unambiguous synapomorphies.

The Late Permian and Mesozoic evolution of the Mid-Polish Trough is analysed using a set of palaeotectonic cross-sections which are constrained by regional integrated depth-converted reflection seismic profiles. Results support the concept that the central and NW part of the Mid-Polish Trough can be subdivided into a Pomeranian and a Kuiavian segment. The Pomeranian segment is characterised by lower subsidence and a shallower depth to the base of the Zechstein (3500-4000 m) as compared with the Kuiavian segment. The Pomeranian basin was characterised by a nearly symmetrical structure and a single depocentre. In Kujawy, the basin displays a more complex structure with several local depocentres. In the Pomeranian segment, salt structures are poorly developed (salt pillows). These formed relatively late: during the latest Cretaceous and Early Paleocene. In the Kuiavian segment, salt structures include also salt diapirs which began to form at the end of the Muschelkalk, and were active later throughout Mesozoic times, as evidenced by lateral facies and thickness changes. During end Cretaceous and Paleocene basin inversion, the base of the Zechstein was uplifted by 3000-4000 m in the Kuiavian segment and by 2000-3000 m in the Pomeranian segment. The transition zone between the Pomeranian and Kuiavian segments, located in the area between Piła and Toruń, displays mixed features in its structure and geological evolution. Subsidence of the Mid-Polish Trough was controlled by multiple extensional pulses during which pre-existing crustal-scale faults were reactivated. Similarly, inversion of the Mid-Polish Trough involved reactivation of crustal faults. Segmentation of the Mid-Polish Trough can be related to factors including differences in its basement composition.

Interpretation of seismic data from the Pomeranian segment of the Mid-Polish Trough (MPT) shows that this part of the MPT evolved in Mesozoic times as a decoupled sedimentary basin. Regional-scale decoupling was caused by the thick Zechstein salt layer. Detailed tectonic and seismostratigraphic analysis of seismic data from the vicinity of the Oświno IG 1 well allowed for significant reinterpretation of the Oświno structure, which was previously interpreted as partly pierced salt diapir. This structure developed in Triassic to Jurassic times as a listric normal fault zone detached above the salt layer, resulting from activity of a master fault present within the pre-Zechstein basement. Two pulses of increased extension could be inferred for Oświno fault zone: Late Triassic and Mid-Late Jurassic. The Oświno fault zone was reactivated in the Late Cretaceous due to the compression responsible for inversion of the MPT. Inversion-related uplift of the axial part of the MPT created a morphological gradient and the increased pressure of uplifted overburden rocks directed towards its flanks that also contributed to reactivation of the Oświno fault zone. This fault zone, together with the Drawno-Człopa salt diapiric structure and graben system of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, have developed due to decoupled evolution of the Mid-Polish Trough.

This paper deals with new docodont teeth from the upper Bathonian of Forest Marble, collected by Prof. K.A. Kermack and his team, and from the basal Cretaceous of the Purbeck Limestone Group, collected by P. Ensom. Study of this materialled to the recognition of three new taxa: Borealestes mussettisp. nov. and Krusatodon kirtlingtonensis gen. et sp. nov. from Forest Marble, Peraiocynodon majorsp. nov. from Purbeck; this makes the Bathonian locality the richest (four species) docodont locality so far known. The possible synonymy of Cyrtlatherium–Simpsonodon (Forest Marble) and of Peraiocynodon–Docodon (Purbeck−Morrison) suggested by several authors is discussed. In conclusion, phyletic relationships between the known docodont genera are proposed, based on lower molars.

The Mid-Polish Trough (MPT) is well recorded in the distribution of thickness of the Mesozoic sediments. Its shape was most distinctly delineated in the Early Triassic, and Early to Middle Jurassic, when thickness gradients attaining 100 m/km were reached. However, because the regional faults bordering the MPT were not active throughout its history, the existence of Mid-Polish Rift has not been confirmed. The strongest thickness gradients may have been caused by the periodical activity of the sub-Zechstein faults, which did not penetrate the Mesozoic strata due to the damping effect of plastic Zechstein salts. On the contrary, local faults, forming (mainly during the Late Triassic) syn-sedimentary grabens, are a common feature in the MPT and its surroundings. Transversal subdivision of the MPT and its slopes into at least two segments (Pomeranian and Kuiavian) is clearly visible in the thickness pattern. It is expressed by the presence of separate depocentres, reversal of asymmetry, differences in stratigraphical sequences observed on the palaeomorphological terraces south-west of the MPT, and by the structural variations after the inversion. The scale of inversion, which transformed the MPT into the Mid-Polish Swell (MPS), is unclear and needs further investigations. Estimation of the thickness of the Upper Cretaceous sediments removed by erosion is a key problem in this respect. It should take into account both, the effects of the regional inversion and the local changes resulting from the last stage of strong salt displacements.

Fossil crocodilians are well known from vertebrate bearing localities in South America, but the last record of the group in Chile is from the Cretaceous. No living crocodilians occur in Chile today, and the timing of their disappearance from the country is unknown. We provide the first post−Mesozoic report of crocodilian remains from late Miocene marine deposits of the Bahía Inglesa Formation, northern Chile. The fragmentary material provides proof that Crocodiliformes were present in Chile until at least seven million years ago. We suggest that late Neogene climatic cooling and changes in South American palaeophysiography caused the extinction of the group in Chile.

The Mid-Polish Swell (MPS), uplifted in the latest Cretaceous-earliest Tertiary at the site of the earlier Permian-Mesozoic Mid-Polish Trough (MPT), is adjoined to the south-west by a chain of salt diapirs which are probably underlain by a system of late Variscan deep faults in the pre-Zechstein basement. The Mesozoic reactivation of this system is responsible for the rapid thickness increase towards the axis of theMPT. Consequently, it may be regarded as the southwestern boundary of the MPT. During the phase of inversion, this system caused the mobilization of the Zechstein salt, the formation of the chain of diapirs and also (indirectly) the uplift of the regional unit of the MPS.

Opis:
Analysis of deposition rate were performed for synthetic sections, representing the upper Jurassic to lower Miocene sedimentary fill of the Western Outer Carpathian (WOC) basins. Calculated deposition rates differs in a range of a few orders of magnitude. During Tithonian to Berriasian-early Valanginian tectonic activity of the source areas supplying the Silesian Basin was related to the mechanism of syn-rift extensional elevation and erosion of horsts. General decay of source area activity in Valanginian to Cenomanian time was caused by regional post-rift thermal sag of the WOC. The Barremian to Albian phase of compressional uplift of the source area located north of the WOC lead to increase of deposition rate in some zones of the WOC basin. In Turonian to Paleocene time thick-skinned collision and thrusting took place south and south-west (in the recent coordinates) of the Silesian Basin causing very rapid, diachronous uplift of this zone, referred to as Silesian Ridge, resulting with high deposition rate in the Silesian Basin. At that time supply of sediments to the Magura Basin from south was relatively low, and the Pieniny Klipen Belt was presumably zone of transfer of these sediments. In Eocene the zone of collisional shortening in the WOC system was relocated to the south, causing rapid uplift of the Southern Magura Ridge and intense supply of detritus to the Magura Basin. Thrusting in the Southern Magura Ridge and collisional compression resulted with flexural bending of its broad foreland, being the reason for decrease of activity of both the Silesian Ridge and the source area at the northern rim of the WOC. The Eocene evolution of the Silesian Ridge is interpreted as controlled by both episodic tectonic activity and eustatic sea level changes. Contrasting development of the Southern Magura Ridge and the northern rim of Central Carpathians during Eocene stands for a palaeographic distance between the two domains at that time. During Oligocene and early Miocene a significant increase of deposition rates is observed for the basin in which sediments of the Krosno beds were deposited. This was caused by tectonic uplift of the source at the northern rim of the WOC, as well as the Silesian Ridge and the partly formed Magura nappe. The Miocene molasse of the WOC foredeep basin is characterised by notably higher maximum deposition rates than ones calculated for the flysch deposits of the WOC.

The limb posture in early mammals is a matter of controversy. Kielan−Jaworowska and Gambaryan presented arguments for a sprawling posture in multituberculates, based mainly on three characters of the hind limbs (deep pelvis, mediolateral diameter of the tibia larger than the craniocaudal, and position of MtV, which fits the peroneal groove on the calcaneus and is not aligned with the axis of tuber calcanei). Here we present two more arguments for sprawling hind limbs in early mammals. One is the presence of an os calcaris, supporting the probably venomous spur in hind legs of docodontans, multituberculates, eutriconodontans, and “symmetrodontans”, similar to those of extant monotremes. We argue that early mammals (except for boreosphenidans) had sprawling limb posture and venomous spur; acquisition of the parasagittal stance was apparently characteristic only of boreosphenidans, in which the spur has not been found. The second argument is based on taphonomic evidence from lacustrine conditions (e.g., Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota), in which the mammalian skeletons, except for boreosphenidans (Sinodelphys and Eomaia), have been preserved compressed dorso−ventrally, suggesting sprawling stance. In similar conditions of the Eocene Messel Biota the skeletons of boreosphenidan mammals (except for bats and pangolins) are preserved lying on flanks, suggesting parasagittal stance. Sereno argued that forelimbs in multituberculates were parasagittal, based on the stated presence of a ventrally facing glenoid, a mobile shoulder joint, and an elbow joint with enhanced flexion−extension capability. However, these characters are not unequivocally indicative of parasagittalism. We demonstrate that the structure of the distal end of the multituberculate humerus is condylar, with no tendency for developing a trochlea. We reconstruct multituberculates and other early mammals with sprawling stance in resting position as plantigrade.

Opis:
At the end of the Jurassic and beginning of the Cretaceous in the Western Outer Carpathians (WOC) rift-related extension led to development of: the deep marine grabens with flysch and pelagic sedimentation, the zones of shallow marine carbonate sedimentation, and the elevated horsts, supplying the basins with sediments. Transition to the Early Cretaceous and Cenomanian post-rift thermal sag stage was responsible for a general ceasing of tectonic activity in the source areas and unification of the previous sub-basins. In Barremian–Albian time, the northern, external sources for sediments were uplifted due to compression, presumably caused by the orogenic collision in the Middle and Outer Dacides and/or collision related to subduction of the Penninic Ocean. The Silesian Ridge, rapidly elevated and eroded during Late Cretaceous and Paleocene, is interpreted here as an active thick-skinned thrust belt. Nappe stacking in that area and stress transmission towards foreland caused flexural subsidence of the proximal zone (the inner Silesian Basin) and uplift in the distal zone (including: the outer Silesian Basin, the Subsilesian facies zone, the Skole Basin and the northern sediment source areas). The Eocene alternating shallow marine deposition in the Silesian Ridge and its exposition for erosion is interpreted as controlled by both eustatic sea level changes and episodic tectonic activity. At this time new thick-skinned thrust belt developed south of the Magura Basin, which supplied vast amount of detritus for the Magura Beds. The Eocene tectonic shortening and deformations in the Southern Magura Ridge and development of the accretionary prism caused flexural bending of its broad foreland, subsidence and relative facies unification of the basins and decrease of activity of the source areas located north of the Magura Basin. The Oligocene progress of plates/microplates convergence and relocation of the zone of tectonic shortening towards the north led to compressional uplift of the source areas located both to the north of the WOC basins and to the south of the Silesian facies zone, the later composed of crystalline basement, as well as sediments of the Magura Unit. That sources supplied with detritus the Upper Oligocene–Llower Miocene Krosno Beds, being a diachronic continuation of synorogenic deposition of the Magura Beds. During the Late Cretaceous–Paleogene–Early Miocene, an important tectonic shortening across the WOC took place, accommodated mainly in the source areas. This indicates that the palaeogeographic relationships between the Silesian Basin, the Magura Basin and the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin were changing during the Cretaceous and Cainozoic. In the time span of Albian to Oligocene in the zone palaeogeographically located between the Magura Basin and the Central Carpathians three separate source areas were active, each characterized by a different geological setting. These sources were replacing each other in time, suggesting significant collisional and/or strike slip reorganisation of the zone during that period. The collision of the WOC evolved in time from thick-skinned mode during the Late Cretaceous–Paleogene to thin-skinned one during the Middle Miocene.
