Opis:
Modern industries often attempt to implement innovations that have a disruptive potential. In shipping, this included a largely unsuccessful introduction of nuclear propulsion in late 20th century, among other concepts. Nowadays, introduction of increased autonomy is being associated with prospects of various industry-wide benefits, but is also burdened with serious obstacles. The objective of this study is to investigate reasons behind the failure of nuclear-powered merchant ships introduction and whether lessons learnt from it can be applied to the prospective implementation of autonomous merchant ships. It advocates that three aspects of maritime technology are crucial for its successful implementation: perceived level of safety, economical feasibility, and legal setup.

Karl Heinrich Marx tended to focus on considering how class struggle, oppressive ideologies, and social inequality are portrayed in literary texts throughout history in order to find a definite structural cause behind the modern exploitative capitalist system. One of these historical literary texts that attracted Marx’s attention was William Shakespeare’s to which he referred a lot. This paper intends to analyze Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Merchant of Venice in the light of Marxism to expose the upper classes’ oppressive behavior, their unethical victimization, exploitation, and commodification of the lower classes. Consequently, through a Marxist reading of Shakespeare’s plays, one can perceive that there are vivid links between Marxist and Shakespearean thinking, especially the similarities of thought held by each on the subjects of class oppression and commodification. Shakespeare portrayed the bitter social facts which Marxist thought tends to agree with.

In situation when the rescue ship is not available SAR action coordinator may use merchant ships that are in the accident area to help ship in danger. Merchant ship has not special equipment to search survivors and according to small number of crew, cargo on board and stability situation may be not suitable for SAR operation. Some weather conditions may be danger for this ship and there may be two ships in danger instead of one. The action coordinator is responsible to choose good vessel. The paper will present elements that should be taken into consideration. Article will show usage of Bayesian network to estimate which ship is better for SAR action This tool will help coordinator to make good decision. Paper specified elements of merchant ship usability for SAR action based on safety during action with algorithm of MSC decision according use of merchant ship. The paper also show example of calculations of hypothetic rescue action on the Mediterranean Sea using GeNIe program, which include probability of safety search patternfor ship, weather condition and other variables. Results show Mir Emad to be the least useful ship. The best result has tanker Excel, but during calculation didn't take into consideration type of the ship.

Opis:
The marine Diesel engines cooling systems and its elements were changing similarly to engines construction. Evolution of the cooling systems tends to reduce sea water pipelines inside engine room. Application of a central cooling system with box coolers completely eliminates sea water pipelines from engine room. Now that solution is rarely used on ships. It can be met on smaller ships, whose power output usually does not exceed 5000 kW, for example: tugs, dredgers, barges, supply vessels, fishing vessels, ferries, cargo freighters, reefers, ice breakers, carriers, etc. – operating inland, as well as in open sea navigation. The article presents an example of practical application of the central cooling system with box coolers on the tug running in Gdynia harbour. In author’s opinion, central cooling system with box coolers has a chance to spread out on bigger ships in the future. It will mainly depend on efficiency and reliability of box coolers secure systems. These systems ought to ensure correct operation of a cooling system between ship class dry-dockings. The box coolers used on the presented harbour tug are secured by ICAF system. The article presents also a proposition of solution to the cooling system with box coolers for merchant ship with power output higher up 5000 kW and advantages (disadvantages) of that solution.

Opis:
Godric of Finchale (c. 1070/1080) was born into a peasant family in Walpole in East Anglia. He was a merchant who achieved great economic success and became a rich man. His economic career lasted for about 16 years. During this time, he made his way from a beachcomber to a merchant owning shares in two merchant ships. At the end of the 12th century, Reginald of Durham wrote Libellus de vita et miraculis S. Godrici de Finchale. In it, he focused not only on the hermit stage of Godric’s life, but also described a period in which he was a very successful and affluent merchant. In this essay, based on Reginald’s account, I analyze the successive stages of Godric’s economic career and reassess the current views of researchers on Godric’s life. In addition, I supplement them with so far undeveloped topics, such as the description of Godric’s place of birth, and the analysis of the function of bailiff, which was exercised by Godric. At the end of the essay, I also try to answer the question: to what extent was Godric’s career unique at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries?

The Baltic Sea is crisscrossed by several dense vessel traffic routes. Growing shipping traffic increases the likelihood of collisions. A quantitative analysis of the impact of fishing vessel traffic streams on streams of merchant vessel traffic aims to identify areas of intense traffic of this type and to assess the potential risks. The identification of intersections of fishing vessel routes and merchant shipping traffic allows us to identify spots of potential collisions. The analysis made use of the IALA IWRAP Mk2 program and AIS data collected from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

Analysing the norms of comportments of honest merchant, to whom the tractat is dedicated, the author of the essay describes qualities typical for the merchant morality of that age, related to both to the Christian faith lay traditions. The dissonance between this values characteristic rather for the medieval mentality and the willingness to gain profit is less and less dramatic, and the figure of merchant, based on the perspective of the others members of society, less ambivalent morally. The commerce, i.e. the art of dealings, becomes the value in her self because is usefull for all of the citizens, and the merchant’s practices become appreciated if made according to the professional ethic.

The impact of the noise radiated from merchant ships on marine life has become an active area of research. In this paper, a methodology integrating observation at a single location and modelling the whole noise field in shallow waters is presented. Specifically, underwater radiated noise data of opportunistic merchant ships in the waters of Zhoushan Archipelago were collected at least one day in each month from January 2015 to November 2016. The noise data were analyzed and a modified empirical spectral source level (SSL) model of merchant ships was proposed inspired by the RANDI-3 model (Research Ambient Noise Directionality) methodology. Then combining the modified model with the realistic geoacoustic parameters and AIS data of observed merchant ships, the noise mappings in this area were performed with N × 2D of Normal Mode calculations, in which the SSL of each ship was estimated using the modified model. The sound propagation at different receiving positions is different due to the shielding effect of islands and bottom topography. The methodology proposed in this paper may provide a reference for modelling shipping noise in shallow waters with islands and reefs.

The paper concerns the idea of entrepreneurial ethics in scholastic texts. The sources, methods of research, and general historical preliminaries are discussed. In the methodology of the research Max Weber’s categories of economic exchange, entrepreneurship and entrepreneur are invoked. Medieval notions and concepts, such as iustus mercator, industria, and bonum commune are analyzed in the context of these socio-economic categories. Texts from the middle of the XIIIth century to the middle of XVth century are taken into consideration, in particular such canonists and theologians as Chiaro of Florence (Casus fratris Claris), Thomas Aquinas, Giles of Lesines, Henry of Ghent, Peter Olivi, Matthew of Cracow, Bernardine of Siena, and Antonine of Florence. The merchant’s guide by Benko Kutruljević(Benedetto Cotrugli) is considered too, as an example of reception of scholastic thought at a more practical level. In the topic discussed the particularity of Latin Christianity in the late medieval period, in comparison to other epochs and civilizations, is linked to the new idea of work and to certain cultural phenomena, including: the ethical focus of scholastic doctors, the idea of volunteer poverty, and Christian concept of the gift (referred to particularly in the Sermon on the Mount: Luke 6, 20–45). The system of terms and notions – by which entrepreneurship and economic activity were defi ned – influenced in some way the mentality and social practice. In practice, the evaluation of entrepreneurial activity was related to different systems of norms, which was expressed by the notion of forum. This could be: Roman law (forum civilis), canons, and practical theology (forum Dei). In the final case of forum Dei, the individual confession, introduced by the Church in the XIIIth century, was of crucial significance.
