Background. The cognitive objective of the present paper was to diagnose and compare the level of body lateralization in girls and boys with mild intellectual disability in the area of functional asymmetry of selected motor abilities. The practical objective was to verify the possibilities of using the functional asymmetry test in body lateralization diagnosis in intellectually disabled adolescents. Material and methods. The study covered a group of 44 individuals in total, that is boys (22 persons) and girls (22 persons) aged 15–16 years. To assess the functional asymmetry the Koszczyc–Sekita test developed at the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław was used. Results. The tests enabled the authors to formulate the following general conclusion: the lateral diversity of 1) upper and lower limb velocity and 2) strength of lower extremities in the investigated girls and boys with mild intellectual disability is statistically insignificant. Only the strength of the upper limbs has a significant level of functional asymmetry. The lowest level of asymmetry occurs in strength of the lower limbs. Conclusion. The investigation is the next step in diagnosing the state of lateralization in children and adolescents with intellectual disability. This is an issue which has been poorly studied though it is essential to be effective in such activities as learning and teaching. For the above reasons the diagnosis in this developmental area should become one of the most important elements of the teachers’ work.

Vzdelávanie sa dá považovať za ozložitý interaktívny proces, kde na seba pôsobia edukátor a edukant. Ovplyvňujú a obohacujú sa o nové poznatky a skúsenosti. Pri vzájomnom pôsobení a odovzdávaní si poznatkov nám nemôže stačiť len verbálna rovina. Moderný edukátor musí pracovať s modifi-kovanými poznatkami pri zvládaní žiakov s rôznym druhom a formou post-ihnutia. Zároveň pracuje s celou radou didaktických pomôcok, ktoré edukan-tom priblížia predkladanú problematiku. Takéto využívanie pomôcok sa tiahne celým prierezom vzdelávania už od minulých čias, kedy musíme spomenúť učiteľa národov Jána Ámosa Komenského a jeho mnohých predchodcov.
The aim of the article is to discuss the teacher's activity when working with a mentallydisabled pupil, also suffering from ADHD, at a special elementary school. Possible causesof ADHD are approached in the paper, providing guidance for elementary school educatorsin their work with pupils in special schools, in special classes, as well as in the intact educationalenvironment of regular schools. The article presents opportunities to approach individualswith mental disabilities and ADHD symptoms at school and at home, in the familyenvironment. At the same time, attention is drawn to the possibilities of educational activityand the adaptation of the educational environment to pupils in school and out-of-schoolfacilities. The article describes situations when the symptoms of the syndrome can improve,at the same time improving educational results.

The contribution presents a new education and training programme “Stepping into Life with the Right Values,” aimed to improve integration of mentally disabled pupils into the system of vocational training centres and thus also society. The goal of the presented programme was not only to create suitable conditions for pupils’ harmonious adaptation to the dormitory environment, but also to teach them appropriate orientation in various life situations. Effectiveness of the programme was verified experimentally at selected vocational training centres in Slovakia during the 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 school years. Our research confirmed that pupils who had gone through the adaptation process using the new programme were statistically significantly better oriented in ordinary life situations at the school dormitory, but also in ordinary life situations outside.

In connection with the theme of the author analyzes the selected folders risk sexual behavior with a focus on people with intellectual disabilities and specific group, which in this respect are Roma with intellectual disabilities. Tablet computers have become a common part of our life style. Since 2012, inspired by the success of touch devices in special education, we have established and led the IT therapy program for the mentally challenged. In this paper we also present one of our final study with 12 participants. Based on our findings from our studies we have finally proposed 14 design principles (an extension and redefinition of a previously proposed 10 simple design principles) which should be generally respected in design and development of every "usable/accessible" application for the mentally challenged. Some of these principles are applicable as design patterns or models in software development and some were already implemented in our framework which we used to develop new more usable applications.

INTRODUCTION: The problem of disability in the modern world affects a significant number of people of different ages. Mental disability is a disorder characterised by limitations in a person's intellectual functioning, social, and adaptive behavior, appearing before the age of 18. According to a report published in 2022, there were 897 social welfare homes in Poland, of which there were up to 16,412 residents with disabilities. Interventions in emergency medical services for mentally disabled patients require an interdisciplinary approach. The purpose of the study is to attempt to outline the profile of a patient with mental disabilities from the perspective of the emergency medical services (EMS) team, as well as to indicate the characteristics of calls to social welfare homes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis included 125 patients who were treated by emergency services at the "Pomocna Dłoń" Social Welfare Home (SWH) in Wirów (central Poland). Data on the time of call, urgency code, type of team dispatched, and reason for call were analysed. The following data were extracted from all information about patients: age, gender, medical rescue procedures performed, supply of sedatives to patients, diagnosis, and destination of patient transport. In the statistical analysis, the significance threshold was established at p<0.05. RESULTS: During the period under study, the emergency services performed a total of 125 interventions. The highest number of interventions took place in the afternoon and evening (49.6%). 59.2% of the trips were made to men (n=74) and 40.8% to women (n=51). The mean age of the patients was 62.6 (SD ± 17.91) years. The most common reason for calling EMS was shortness of breath (n=16; 12.8%), while the most common diagnosis was cystostomy dysfunction (n=15; 12%). The final destination of transport for most patients was the hospital outpatient department (52.8%), the second place was the emergency department - ED (23.2%), and the third place was the psychiatric department (11.2%). 12.8% of the patients were helped at the scene, without having to be transported to hospital. CONCLUSIONS: A mentally disabled patient in a nursing home to whom EMS is called is usually a middle-aged man. The number of interventions increases in the evenings. The most common reason for emergency medical services calls is shortness of breath, which is not confirmed by on-scene examination. Every tenth patient did not require transport to the hospital, raising doubts as to the validity of calling an emergency medical team. Human resources and organizational solutions should be considered to improve the quality of medical care and the supply of emergency medicines in social welfare homes, without the need for emergency services.

The role of parents in supporting the children’s psychosexual development is extremely significant. It is them who introduce first in the system of values, rules, behavioral standards, they teach how to express feelings and emotions and this is why the family home is the best place to start sexual education. It is very difficult for many parents to transfer knowledge about sexuality to children, especially for the parents of children with mental disability. They present different attitudes towards the children’s sexuality, which imply how they lead the education on this topic. Conducted research aimed at exploring the parents’ opinions on sexual education at home. Research results showed a range of difficulties (among others insufficient preparation or knowledge) concerning the conversations with children about their psychosexual development. It is necessary to support the parents with knowledge, information as well as with competences and skills in sexual education of children.

Wstęp. Praca ma charakter poglądowy. Przedstawia dostępne badania na temat postaw Polaków wobec niepełnosprawnych. Niniejszy artykuł pokazuje teoretyczno-prawno-medyczne rozważania z zakresu niepełnosprawności, socjologiczno-psychologiczne definicje postaw społecznych oraz ich uwarunkowania wobec osób niepełnosprawnych. Materiał i metoda. Podstawą artykułu jest literatura przedmiotowa oraz wyniki niezależnych badań opisujących postawy Polaków wobec niepełnosprawnych, także niepełnosprawnych psychicznie. Wyniki. Za podstawowe uwarunkowania postaw wobec niepełnosprawnych autorka uznaje cechy społeczno-demograficzne, wiedzę na temat niepełnosprawności, częstość kontaktów z osobami niepełnosprawnymi. Polacy mają co najmniej ambiwalentny stosunek do niepełnosprawnych psychicznie, a jednocześnie uważają choroby psychiczne za chorobę wstydliwą. Odmawiają chorym prawa do pełnienia ról społecznych związanych z odpowiedzialnością. Wnioski. Polityka wobec niepełnosprawnych zmierza w kierunku integracji z pełnosprawnymi. Zmiany świadomości i wiedzy Polaków nie zmieniają się w sposób rewolucyjny. Im wyższy status społeczny, tym bardziej pozytywne postawy wobec niepełnosprawnych.
Background. The article shows the available research on Polish attitudes towards the disabled. This article shows the theoretical and legal and medical considerations in the field of disability, socio-psychological definition of social attitudes and the attitudes and the conditions for people with disabilities. Material and methods. The base of the article are the combination of chosen sociological concept of disabled results of independent researches. The results of independent researches in attitudes towards disabled were also presented. Results. The basic determinants of attitudes towards disabled author recognizes the socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge about disability, the frequency of contact with people with disabilities. Poles have at least an ambivalent attitude towards the mentally disabled, and claim mental illness as shameful disease. Conclusions. Policy towards the disabled is moving towards integration with non-disabled. Changes in awareness and knowledge of Poles do not change in a revolutionary way. The higher the social status the more positive attitudes towards disabled people.

In the paper we present partial results of comprehensive research, which focused on attitudinal and behavioral attributes sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities and their socio-cultural and ethical contexts using selected items of us compiled questionnaire sexuality and sexual education of students with intellectual disabilities. Poczucie jakości życia jest istotnym elementem oceny własnej egzystencji dla każdego człowieka. Sposób poznawania rzeczywistości zależy od ogólnej sytuacji życiowej, ale też od zdolności percepcyjnych i intelektualnych. Dlatego na kanwie powyższej ogólnej refleksji uznano, że interesująca będzie prezentacja zagadnienia poczucia jakości życia w odniesieniu do grupy osób z upośledzeniem umysłowym. Jakość życia stanowi bardzo osobisty wyznacznik satysfakcji i zadowolenia z życia, stąd częste utożsamianie tych terminów. Jednak kiedy analizujemy jakość życia innych, obok wymiaru obiektywnego należy uwzględnić również aspekt subiektywny. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi prezentację uzyskanych wyników badań, którymi objęto grupę 360 osób z upośledzeniem umysłowym w stopniu lekkim i umiarkowanym, uczestniczących w warsztatach terapii zajęciowej w zawodowej szkole specjalnej i w domu rodzinnym. Badania przeprowadzono, wykorzystując Kwestionariusz poczucia jakości życia (QLQ) R.L. Schalocka i K.D. Keitha w tłumaczeniu i adaptacji A. Jurosa. Dla zgromadzenia informacji dotyczących badanych osób posłużono się Kartą indywidualną dla osób niepełnosprawnych (KI) skonstruowaną przez T. Witkowskiego. Prowadzone analizy wykazały, że głównym czynnikiem wpływającym na wyższy poziom jakości życia jest miejsce przebywania oraz stopień upośledzenia umysłowego, natomiast jakości życia nie różnicuje płeć osób badanych.
A sense of quality of life is an important element in the assessment of own existence for every person. The way of understanding reality is dependent on the overall life situation but also the perceptual and intellectual abilities. Therefore, on the canvas of above overall reflection it is considered that the presentation of the issue of the sense of quality of life in relation to a group of people with mental disability shall be interesting. Quality of life is a very personal measure of satisfaction and contentment with life, hence frequent identification of these terms. Although, when we analyse the quality of life of others beside the objective dimension, we should also take into account the subjective aspect. This article is a presentation of research results, which included a group of 360 people with slight and moderate mental disability, staying in the therapeutic activity workshops, special vocational schools and homes. The study was conducted using a sense of Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ) of the R.L. Schalock and K.D. Keith, in the translation and adaptation of A. Juros, for the purpose of collection of information concerning the respondents, a Personal card for people with disabilities (KI), constructed by T. Witkowski was used. The conducted analysis has shown that the main factor affecting the higher level of quality of life is a place of residence and degree of mental disability. The sex of the respondents does not change their life quality.

Opis:
Artykuł porusza temat rodziny dziecka z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. We wstępie zawarto wyjaśnienia terminologiczne dotyczące wartości rodziny, klasyfikacji postaw rodzicielskich oraz ich znaczenia dla rozwoju społeczno-emocjonalnego dziecka. Pod uwagę wzięto w szczególności charakterystykę rodziny z dzieckiem z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. W dalszej części artykułu przedstawiono wyniki badań własnych przeprowadzonych w grupie 25 ojców dzieci z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną głębszego stopnia. W badaniach skupiono się na nasileniu postaw wykazywanych przez ojców dzieci zgodnie z klasyfikacją Mieczysława Plopy (2006). W części końcowej zamieszczono podsumowanie oraz wnioski i implikacje praktyczne dla ojców dzieci z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną.
The article is about a family with intellectual disability children. The first part explains the value of a family and how the attitude and behavior both of parents can influence social and emotional child`s development. It also shows the differences between each parent`s attitude towards their child. In the next part there are some results of a research undertaken on group of 25 fathers of children with more serious intellectual disability. They show attitude of fathers according to M. Plopy’s classification. The last part summarizes them all, contains practical recommendations for the parents of children with intellectual disability.
