    Working memory training (WMT) has recently become one of the most debated issues in the field of cognitive psychology. Since working memory (WM) is considered a strong correlate of IQ, numerous researchers have been trying to increase the latter by training the former. Proven effectiveness of working memory training could lead to its application in the therapy of many cognitive impairments. WMT could be also used as a tool of improving cognitive functioning of healthy subjects. However, almost every publication claiming to provide evidence for achieving one of above mentioned objectives has been criticised, mostly because of methodological shortcomings. The aim of my presentation is to extract potential sources of inconsistencies existing between the authors of meta-analysis and reviews of WMT research. For this reason I take a closer look at results and conclusions of several meta-analysis and reviews. As a result I point few indications that should be taken into consideration in future studies on WMT effectiveness.

    This article attempts to find the answer for two questions. Is memory training reasonable and effective? And how to work with seniors in classes involving cognitive stimulation activities? Empirical part that involved the study with 99 participants (experimental group underwent memory training) answers the first question. The results indicate moderate effectiveness of cognitive stimulation but it can also act as a buffer against deterioration of memory functioning. Methodological part which answers the second question, refers to three aspects: profile of a senior, role of the educator and good practices of running such trainings.

    Opis:
    Working memory is now one of the most frequently studied individual differences in various fields of science, including cognitive and developmental psychology, neuroscience, and second language acquisition. It affects cognitive functioning, including all aspects of learning a foreign language, and its deficits severely impair learning outcomes. This article focuses on practical application of this knowledge (see Gregersen & MacIntyre, 2014) in a language classroom. To this end, we first present a definition of a working memory and its components altogether with their relevance for various areas of foreign language learning. This is followed by a review of research on linguistically gifted individuals, polyglots, and savants as well as bilinguals from the perspective of memory aptitude. The last section offers some pedagogical implications, such as aptitude-treatment interaction and working memory training. The article ends with suggestions for further research in this area.

    According to the statistics, there are currently 36 million people with dementia of the Alzheimer type in the world. The incidence of disease increases with the age. According to the Slovak Alzheimer’s Society in 2010, Slovakia had approximately 60,000 patients with Alzheimer’s disease and some other related diseases. Estimated number in 2030 is 180 000 patients. The disease also applies to the other ten thousand of nursemaids and family members who care for the disabled. For these reasons, it is necessary that the society should respond to the situation. And also providers of social services are professionally prepared to work with this type of client.

    Body memory is a relatively new philosophical notion, entangled in interiorization of the past – paradoxically this entanglement liberates the individual from the dictature of the present flow and enables her/his autonomy. The author intends to show that this apparent ensnarement, with all its difficult genesis, makes us responsible, active agents, influencing our environment. To achieve this objective, she chooses to describe the painful of ambiguous process of training and drill of the body, immersing us in social patterns, and thus in the living past. This path leads us – a paradox again – to the arduous and painstaking rediscovery of the issue of subject. There is still hope that we can recuperate this vanishing notion, reinterpreting the most essential classical themes of philosophy, such as time and transcendentality. But the subject matter remains opaque, and requires further reflection.

    The main objective of the presented study was to propose a new taxonomy of learning strategies for the digital age. The revised taxonomy of Oxford’s SILL (1990) was implemented in a nationwide questionnaire to display the picture of strategy use, investigate relationships between particular strategy types and elicit learners’ preferences on strategy instruction. The data was processed statistically with SPSS 20 package. Results confirm high reliability of SI-LLE, indicate relatively strong relationships between particular strategy groups, where higher education institution, year of studies and teaching experience have a statistically significant effect of similar strength on strategy awareness.

    Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie nauczycieli Szkoły Ćwiczeń związanych z krakowskim Pedagogium oraz ukazanie roli, jaką odegrali w kształceniu przyszłych elit intelektualnych Krakowa. W większości przypadków opisano tutaj nauczycieli, którzy związali swoje całe życie zawodowe ze wspomnianą Szkołą Ćwiczeń, będącą ważnym miejscem zajęć praktycznych dla Państwowego Pedagogium i Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Pedagogicznej w Krakowie. Takim przykładem może być jej dyrektor Rudolf Hajnos, kierujący szkołą w okresie międzywojennym. Szkoła Ćwiczeń krakowskiego Pedagogium mieściła się przy ul. Straszewskiego 22 i początkowo była czterooddziałową szkołą powszechną. W spisie placówek szkolnych przygotowanym przez Mariana Falskiego w 1933 roku wymieniono ją w grupie państwowych niższych szkół ogólnokształcących o siedmioklasowym cyklu nauczania, z gronem dziewięciu nauczycieli i 127 uczniów. W swoim posiadaniu miała cztery sale lekcyjne o niezbyt dużej powierzchni. Nauczycieli starano się przedstawić w szerokim kontekście ich pracy pedagogicznej oraz wkładu w proces nauczania. Nie zapomniano też o omówieniu ich pasji oraz osobistych sukcesów naukowych i artystycznych. Przedstawiony tutaj materiał odwołuje się do źródeł, które uzupełniono o publikacje oraz wywiady przeprowadzone z absolwentami Szkoły Ćwiczeń.
    The aim of this study is to present the profiles of the teachers of the Training School associated with the Pedagogium of Cracow and to show the role they played in the education of the future intellectual elite of Cracow. The paper describes the teachers who tied their professional life with the Training School, an important place for practical classes of the students of the State Pedagogium and the State Pedagogical College of Cracow. As an example one could present Rudolf Hajnos, who was the head of the School in the interwar period. The Training School of the Pedagogium of Cracow was located at 22 Straszewskiego Street and was initially a four-class elementary school. The list of schools prepared by Marian Falski in 1933 listed the school among the state lower general schools of seven-class learning cycle, nine teachers and 127 students. The school owned four modest classrooms and the teachers of the Training School are shown in a broad context of their pedagogical work and contribution to the learning process. Of the same importance are their passions and personal success in scientific and artistic fields. The paper is based on primary source research, supplemented by publications and interviews with graduates from the Training School.

    Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags stehen geschichtsdidaktische Überlegungen zum aktuellen Stellenwert von Erinnerungskulturen als Gegenstand historisch-politischer Lernprozesse in der österreichischen Sekundarstufe. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine erste Analyse auf drei Ebenen durchgeführt. Zunächst wird die Relevanz des Themas Erinnerungskulturen im aktuellen Lehrplan für das Unterrichtsfach „Geschichte und Sozialkunde / Politische Bildung“ betrachtet. Ergänzend dazu wird ein exemplarischer Blick auf die Umsetzung dieser Vorgabe in einem aktuellen Schulbuch geworfen. Abschließend werden dazu erste empirische Ergebnisse zu den Vorstellungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern zum Umgang mit Erinnerungskulturen in Beziehung gesetzt.
    Artykuł zajmuje się aktualnym stanem historyczno-politycznego kształcenia w zakresie kultury pamięci w austriackich szkołach ponadpodstawowych. Analiza została przeprowadzona po raz pierwszy na trzech poziomach. Na początku artykuł stawia pytanie oznaczenie tematu, jakim jest kultura pamięci w obecnym programie przedmiotu „Historia i nauka o społeczeństwie / wiedza o polityce”. Uzupełnieniem jest spojrzenie na realizację tego zagadnienia w wybranym aktualnym podręczniku. Na koniec rozważania na temat programu kształcenia są skonfrontowane z pierwszymi empirycznymi wynikami badań, w których uczniowie pytani są o ich doświadczenia z lekcji na temat kultury pamięci.
    The contribution focuses on historical-didactic considerations on the current significance of memory cultures as an object of historical-political learning processes in Austrian secondary schools. For this purpose, an initial analysis is carried out on three levels. First, the relevance of the topic of memory cultures in the current curriculum for the teaching subject “History and Social Studies / Political Education” is considered. In addition, an exemplary look is taken into the implementation of this issue in a current textbook. Finally, initial empirical results are presented on students’ ideas about how to deal with memory cultures in relation to each other.

    Recurrent neural networks (RNN) have been successfully applied to various sequential decision-making tasks, natural language processing applications, and time-series predictions. Such networks are usually trained through back-propagation through time (BPTT) which is prohibitively expensive, especially when the length of the time dependencies and the number of hidden neurons increase. To reduce the training time, extreme learning machines (ELMs) have been recently applied to RNN training, reaching a 99% speedup on some applications. Due to its non-iterative nature, ELM training, when parallelized, has the potential to reach higher speedups than BPTT. In this work, we present Opt-PR-ELM, an optimized parallel RNN training algorithm based on ELM that takes advantage of the GPU shared memory and of parallel QR factorization algorithms to efficiently reach optimal solutions. The theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented on six RNN architectures, including LSTM and GRU, and its performance is empirically tested on ten time-series prediction applications. Opt- PR-ELM is shown to reach up to 461 times speedup over its sequential counterpart and to require up to 20x less time to train than parallel BPTT. Such high speedups over new generation CPUs are extremely crucial in real-time applications and IoT environments.

    The author, interested in the history of the Polish People’s Army (political work on the level of military units), focuses his attention on the problem of shaping collective memory of Poles in Poland under communists. The article is devoted to one of the elements of political and educational work in the Polish People’s Army – to the so-called “education based on tradition”, which was a tool of inculcation of the special vision of history in line with the political principles (emphasising “progressive traditions”, the history of workers’ movement and activities of communists during the World War II). Tools used for this “education based on tradition” included halls of tradition (which were the centres of this activity), political training, celebrations of important feast days and anniversaries, visual propaganda and cultural-educational work. In the closing part of the article the author presented also some limitations of this education, together with a selection of results of sociological research conducted in the army in the 1960s, which evidenced the effectiveness of propaganda work.
    Tematem artykułu jest sposób, w jaki w Ludowym Wojsku Polskim w latach 1956– 1980 prowadzono działania na rzecz przekazania żołnierzom określonej wizji historii i oddziaływania tym samym na ich pamięć zbiorową. Analiza, oparta na materiałach wojskowych, dotyczy działań obserwowanych na poziomie jednostki wojskowej. Wraz z ukazaniem różnych narzędzi oddziaływania zadano pytanie o jego ograniczenia oraz skuteczność.
