The aim of this essay is to try to apply the theory of researching the literary work created in the 20th century – geopoetics – to the text of the emigration drama by Nikolai Yevreinov. The author points to the difficulty she encounters when using this theory to study drama. She points out that the category of time and space is associated to a higher degree with performance. Nevertheless, the structure of the playwright’s two texts shows connotations in the theory: creating a foreign space and creating a remembered space meets the assumptions of the event-generating and world-giving attitude of the subject.

In modern narratives, the island of Spinalonga appears an attractive tourist destination with an interesting and enigmatic history. In fact, Spinalonga is a memory space, encumbered with past political decisions and medical negligence. This is the story of the great confinement, the isolation of the sick who were symbolically killed. Meanwhile, the photos shared on Instagram show the island in a completely different light. The article seeks to answer the following questions: Does the behavior of Instagram users disrupt the culture of memory and how do these photos (digital representations of memory) influence the image of the island? To this end, I outline the history of the island in the context of exclusion mechanisms for those with Hansen's disease. I discuss the issues of dark tourism, social photo and desemantization of communication. I juxtapose the whole thing with the examples of photos from Spinalonga published on Instagram in 2022.

In the paper, we investigate multi-server closed queueing systems with identical servers and a finite number of terminals. Requests from each terminal are characterized by a random space requirement (volume), the request service time doesn’t depend on its volume and has an exponential distribution. The total requests capacity in the system is limited by a positive value (buffer space memory volume) V. For such systems, stationary requests number distribution and loss probability are determined. The analogous results for open multi-server systems are obtained as a limit case. Some numerical results are attached as well.

Każde miasto ma swój zasób kulturowo‐materialny przechowywany dzięki wielopokoleniowej pamięci. Owa przestrzeń pamięci, stanowi olbrzymi, często słabo wykorzystany potencjał, który odpowiednio i odpowiedzialnie zagospodarowany może dobrze służyć promocji miasta. W referacie przedstawiono możliwości zagospodarowania niezwykle pojemnej łódzkiej przestrzeni pamięci, której projekcja służyć może ożywieniu rozwoju turystyki krajowej i zagranicznej nastawionej docelowo na Łódź. Określono najbardziej wartościowe domeny kultury niematerialnej miasta: tereny szczególnie związane z rozwojem wielonarodowościowego miasta okresu ziemi obiecanej; miejsca heroizmu i solidarności Polaków i Żydów okupione tysiącami ofiar w walce z okupantem; rozwój ośrodka sztuki awangardowej związanej z nazwiskami K. Kobro i W. Strzemińskiego, oraz ponadmaterialny dorobek docenionego w świecie powojennego centrum polskiej kinematografii, które stworzyło gwiazdy formatu: K. Kieślowskiego, R. Polańskiego i A. Wajdy.
Every city has its own cultural and material resources are kept alive in the memory of consecutive generations. This memory space a huge, often underused potential, which could serve the purpose of promoting the city, if adequately and responsibly developed. The paper presents the development possibilities of the unusually vast Łódź memory space, whose projection may enhance domestic and foreign tourism in Łódź. The author indicates the most valuable domains of the intangible culture of the city: the areas include with the development of this multi‐national industrial city at the time was called a Promised Land; a place of great heroism and solidarity of Poles and Jews, who paid of thousands of victims in a fierce struggle with the occupant; city where avant‐garde art flourished, represented by K. Kobro and W. Strzemiński and appreciated the worldʹs center of postwar Polish cinema with the Stars format: K. Kieslowski, R. Polanski and A. Wajda.

The object of the article is the novel Himmelskörper written by Tanja Dückers, the representative of the third post-war generation. The discourse in the family communication and memory space, the relation to family members from the experience generation, as well as the trips in the home towns of the forefathers in the former eastern territories of Germany turn out as important fields of the search for the post-war generation’s identity. The question is asked how memories of the Second World War and the post-war period are constructed in the family context, how the representatives of  the third generation deal with the family’s past. In addition, the role of the return to the home towns of the grandparents and parents for the descendants and whether these journeys lead to the constitution of the feeling of self is analysed.

Twórczość Michaela Crummeya, jednego z czołowych współczesnych pisarzy kanadyjskich, jest silnie osadzona w krajobrazie jego rodzinnych stron – Nowej Fundlandii. Wszystkie cztery jego powieści usytuowane są na wspomnianej wyspie i wspólnie kreślą szeroką panoramę historyczną tego regionu od czasów kolonialnych do współczesności. W swojej debiutanckiej książce z 2001 roku, zatytułowanej Rzeka złodziei, Crummey traktuje przestrzeń przede wszystkim jako nieantropologiczną determinantę ludzkich losów i procesów historycznych oraz świadka zagłady plemienia Czerwonych Indian. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie przestrzeni jako jednej z naczelnych kategorii powieści, a co za tym idzie, jej wpływu na recepcję dzieła przez czytelnika.
The fiction of Michael Crummey, one of the renowned contemporary Canadian writers, is deeply rooted in the landscape of his home-island, that is, Newfoundland. In his debut novel River Thieves published in 2001, the author shows the land as a non-anthropological determinant of human history and the only witness to keep a vivid, undistorted memory of the vanished tribe of Beothuks. This article invites the reading of Crummey's works through the prism of geopoetics and cultural geography. It shows what functions the space/land plays in the discussed narrative and how it adds new meanings to an old story, that is the extinction of Red Indians. Endowed with agency, nature is as important an agent in history-making as the settlers and first inhabitants; moreover, at present day it acts a live repository of memory. The article also investigates the differences between the English and Polish editions of the novel, focusing on the maps that precede the narrative.

The author addresses the problem of naming the space associated with the Staszic Palace in Warsaw. She argues that along with its name, the square in front of the palace lost its both administrative and social distinctiveness and advocates for its restoration. Her analysis of the naming system, complemented by an investigation of archival sources and a reflection upon the history and cultural significance of selected parts of the palace, reveals a gap in the current naming conventions, which cover only urban areas. The article outlines an original proposal of naming typology for enclosed public places, developed in the course of the work on the selection of names for two auditoria of the Staszic Palace, which remained unnamed until 2020. Furthering the arguments that led to naming the auditoria under the author’s recommendations, she explores the connection between the placename and the meanings inscribed in the imaginary space. The theoretical background of the article has been provided by works of Edward Soja, Michel Foucault and Henri Lefebvre as well as the categories of collective memory of space (Hayden White and Frank Ankersmit) and affective heterotopy, defined by the author in her monograph on the Staszic Palace.

In the paper, we investigate a single-server queueing system with unlimited memory space and non-homogeneous customers (calls) of the two following types: 1) external customers that are served by the system under consideration, 2) internal customers that arrive and interrupt the service process only when an external customer is being served. The external customers appear according to a stationary Poisson process. Customers of each of the above-mentioned types are characterized by some random volume. The customer service time depends arbitrarily on its volume. Two schemes of customer service organization are analyzed. The non-stationary and stationary distributions of the total volume of customers present in the system are determined in terms of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes transforms. The stationary first and second moments of total customers volume are also calculated. The obtained results are used to approximate loss characteristics in analogous systems with limited buffer space. Numerical examples illustrating theoretical results are attached as well.

The presented text is an analysis of materiality of memory in Elżbieta Janicka's book Festung Warschau. The text presents two approaches of defying the relation between space and memory. The first approach is related to searching for past signs, while the second approach uncovers past traces. In the studied book each approach is bonded to a different narration style. Furthermore, the presented text conceptualizes the city space of Warsaw, created by Janicka, as a space of memory (S. Kapralski's term).

The paper examines the memoir The Book of My Lives by Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon. This non-fiction work explores the author’s childhood in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the collapse of Yugoslavia, and then his exile experience in Canada and the United States after the outbreak of the war. Through the prism of memory, the book deals with the subject of exiles, uprootedness and efforts to start a new life in a new environment. Being an autobiographical record, The Book of My Lives lends itself to the examination of the issue of exile and memory issues, which is one of the two themes of this paper. The second concerns the understanding of the relationship between memory and space. The paper seeks to show how the spatial dimension is also important for the creation of memory because memories represent an essential factor for the transformation of abstract space into a particular place.

The novel Silva rerum has become a bestseller in Lithuania, although it seems that – as a work contesting the Lithuanian national myth – it did not stand a chance to gain such popularity. It was issued for the first time in 2008 and several re-editions have been released so far. The story of the noble family of Narwojsz, presented in Silva rerum covering the years 1659–1667, turned out to be extremely attractive not only for the Lithuanian reader. The novel has become a bestseller also in Latvia and Estonia. In Poland, it did not get such a large publicity, however – perfectly translated into Polish by Izabela Korybut-Daszkiewicz and published in 2015 – it gained great attention of readers and critics. The author of the article wonders what features decided about the reading success of Silva rerum. She analyzes the baroque stylization of the novel, in which, on many levels, the excess meets with asceticism. She looks at the phenomenon of micro-history, which consequently pushes the “great history” to the background (which is unprecedented in the tradition of the Lithuanian historical novel). She shows how Kristina Sabaliauskaitė transforms the authentic space of Vilnius, capturing the specific genius loci of this city and masterfully combining fiction with geographical and historical reality.

Opis:
European integration impacts the perception and symbolism of space, and the resultant transformation seems to be linked to changes in memory. Both of these factors belong to the deep, although not always conscious effects of integration. Memory is rarely stable. The biographical events in an individual’s life, along with changes in the meaning of the broad European space, affect the symbolism of a local space as developed in both individual and collective memory. This also transforms the memory and symbolism of even the most intimate experience of a local space-and again, this takes place both in the memory of individuals and in the collective memory of local communities. Its form greatly depends on the variety of agents involved in public discourse, such as the media and the arguments made by political and religious leaders. One of the factors involved is the change in social and cultural perspective created by the expanded area of easily accessible space, which in today’s EU includes countries once separated by physically experienced borders. In the article I will attempt to identify and describe the mechanisms involved in transforming the symbolism of local space. One of the issues addressed will be the confrontation between advancing cosmopolitanism and the rise of attachment to localities.

O kruchości tradycji i modelowaniu przeszłości-przyszłości w późnej twórczości Wiktora Pielewina Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba interpretacji dwóch późnych powieści Wiktora Pielewina – Lampy Mafusaila i iPhuck 10– w kontekście czasoprzestrzeni, pamięci i zapomnienia. Przeprowadzona analiza wyjawiła niezwykłe zainteresowanie rosyjskiego pisarza fizycznymi i filozoficznymi teoriami, aspirującymi do zrozumienia prawdziwej natury Wszechświata. Czas i przestrzeń w analizowanych utworach stanowią nierozerwalną całość, tworząc skomplikowaną sieć równoległych światów. Co więcej, te światy nie funkcjonują w linearny sposób, do jakiego przywykło ludzkie poznanie. W Lampie Mafusaila podróże w czasie są możliwe, ale wprowadzenie zmian/ulepszeń w strukturę przeszłości sprawia, że przyszłość ulega całkowitemu zniszczeniu (w rzeczywistości zmiana przeszłości prowadzi do zupełnie innej czasoprzestrzeni). Z drugiej strony podróże w czasie w iPhuck 10 przybierają oryginalną formę aktu Demiurga (w tym wypadku stworzony świat jest pełen tęsknoty i walki o zanikłe wartości duchowe), jako że pamięć w danej powieści równoznaczna jest tworzeniu nowej materialnej rzeczywistości. W tym świetle podróże w czasie są niezwykle utrudnione i pozbawione sensu – wszystkie możliwe światy istnieją przecież równolegle.
Memory made of plaster. On the fragility of tradition and modeling the past-future in the late works of Viktor Pelevin The paper aims at interpreting two recent novels by Viktor Pelevin –  Mafusail's Lamp and iPhuck 10 in the context of time-space, remembrance and oblivion. The analysis revealed the Russian writer’s vast interest in the physical and philosophical theories related to the true nature of the Universe. Therefore, time and space are inextricably connected in the relevant novels as they form a whole network of parallel realities. Moreover, the realities do not function in the linear way, as human beings would like to perceive them.  In Mafusail’s Lamp time travel is possible, but the introduce modifications of the past make the future impossible (in fact, the amendment of the past leads to an utterly new time-space). On the other hand, time travel in iPhuck 10  takes an unorthodox form of world creation (in this case – a world struggling to revive traditional spiritual values), as remembrance in the novel calls for constructing a whole new world. Thus, time travel hardly makes any sense, as all possible worlds exist simultaneously.

О хрупкости традиции и моделировании прошлого-будущего в позднем творчестве Виктора Пелевина Целью нынешней статьи является попытка интерпретации двух поздних романов Виктора Пелевина – Лампы Мафусаилаи iPhuck 10– к ключе хронотопа, памяти и забвения. Проведенный анализ выявил несомненную заинтересованность русского писателя в физических и философских теориях, пытающихся разгадать истинную природу Вселенной. Время и пространство в анализированных произведениях неразделимы, так как создают сложную сеть параллельных миров. К тому же эти новые реальности не функционируют линейным, привычным для человеческого познания образом. В Лампе Мафусаила путешествия во времени возможны, но введение модификаций/улучшений в структуре прошлого полностью уничтожает будущее (в сущности изменение прошлого становится путем в другое пространство-время). С другой стороны, вiPhuck 10 путешествие во времени приобретает оригинальную форму демиургического акта (в данном случае созданный таким образом мир полон тоски и ностальгии по исчезнувшим духовным ценностям). В таком ракурсе путешествия во времени трудны и лишены смысла, так как все возможные реальности существуют и материализируются, будучи параллельными действительностями.

The article reflects upon the works of Andrzej Bart and Zbigniew Kruszyński, concentrating on how urban space is correlated with the category of identity. The most useful here then seems geopoetic reading with its concepts of history’s influence upon geography (and different visions of Polish identity), biography and space identity, mythologizing urban space (Łódź in Bart, Radom and Wrocław in Kruszyński), and the relationship between autobiographical memory and space experience. Additionally, of special importance here is the interaction between movement and stability and between sedentariness and nomadism.
