Opis:
In this paper, some of the existing classifications of the Saleh’s and related models of the AM/AM and AM/PM conversions occurring in communication power amplifiers (PA) are reviewed. It is shown that these classifications are inconsistent and must be refined. Obviously, carrying out such a refinement properly needs a good knowledge and correct understanding of the mechanisms leading to the AM/AM and AM/PM conversions. This was achieved in this paper by performing a thorough analysis of the PA behavior using an analytical tool, the Volterra series. The main points of this analysis are presented here in great detail. Among others, it is shown that the influence of the PA memory on the AM/PM conversion is two-fold: direct and indirect. The former can be however fully neglected. On the other hand, the indirect influence caused by “the interaction of the carrier with the PA memory” cannot be neglected when the PA has not enough wideband frequency characteristics. The latter effect mentioned causes changes in the carrier phase that are received as the phase changes of the baseband modulating signal.

Opis:
In the literature, Saleh’s description of the AM/AM and AM/PM conversions occurring in communication power amplifiers (PAs) is classified as a representation without memory. We show here that this view must be revised. The need for such revision follows from the fact that the Saleh’s representation is based on the quadrature mapping which, as we show here, can be expanded in a Volterra series different from an usual Taylor series. That is the resulting Volterra series possesses the nonlinear impulse responses in form of sums of ordinary functions and multidimensional Dirac impulses multiplied by coefficients being real numbers. This property can be also expressed, equivalently, by saying that the nonlinear transfer functions associated with the aforementioned Volterra series are complex-valued functions. In conclusion, the above means that the Saleh’s representation incorporates memory effects.

The mechanical characteristics and the infrared imaging of stress-induced martensite transformation developing in TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) subjected to tension in various conditions with respect to the SMA austenite finish parameter have been presented. Based on the mechanical curves and their related temperature changes it was found that onset of the martensitic transformation appears at the end of the elastic part of the stress-strain curve, since the temperature starts to increase before the knee in the curve. The uniform temperature distribution observed on the specimen surface at this stage confirms that the initial martensite transformation is macroscopically homogeneous. For the shape memory effect behavior the uniform temperature distribution on the specimen surface was observed during the complete process of the SMA loading which means that the transformation process is macroscopically homogeneous. For the shape memory alloy pseudoelasticity behavior bands of higher temperature have been recorded during the specimen loading and bands of lower temperature during its unloading, manifesting localized Lü ;ders-like deformation, caused by the transformation process. As the transformation advances, the higher temperature changes have been recorded. Taking advantages from the infrared technique a new results concerning nucleation and development of the martensite forward and reverse transformation have been obtained. Finally, some examples of the SMA new applications due to the SMA shape memory effect have been presented and discussed.

Nowadays, the use of smart materials in structures is a major concern to structural engineers. The act of benefiting from numerous advantages of these materials is the main objective of researches and studies focused on seismic and structural engineering. In the present study, in addition to the development of finite element models of several steel frames using ABAQUS software, the effect of shape memory alloys (SMAs) on superelastic behavior and the various types of eccentric braces will be checked. Moreover, it was observed that the use of SMAs within various types of bracing systems of steel frames leads to a decrease in the reduction factor of the frames. Also, the eccentric bracing in which SMAs are utilized in the middle of bracing led to the highest effect on reduction of lateral drift of the frames and decrease of reduction factor. The obtained results indicated that the application of smart materials led to increasing of strain energy and base shear of the first plastic hinge, which is followed by a decrease in the reduction factor of the frame.

Opis:
The so-called Saleh's representation for description of the AM/AM and AM/PM conversions, occurring in communication power amplifiers, consists of two expressions that describe them as functions of a real-valued baseband signal modulating the carrier amplitude. It is a common view that this description forms a model without memory. We show here that the above belief is not correct; just the opposite is true. To prove this, we take into account an equivalent description of the Saleh's model called the quadrature model of bandpass nonlinearities and express it in a form of a nonlinear operator. Afterwards, we check whether this operator possesses a zero memory. To this end, we use an appropriate theorem of the nonlinear systems theory. Finally, as a result of this investigation, we observe that the memory of the above operator is nonzero.

The misinformation effect is influenced by many mnestic and non-mnestic factors. This article concerns the role of two of them: 1) state anxiety, defined as a situational experience of anxiety; 2) memory distrust, understood as a constant tendency to negatively evaluate one's memory. Both factors are relevant in the situation of being a witness and are believed to have a negative effect on the magnitude of the misinformation effect. In the present research, participants’ state anxiety had an immunizing effect against misinformation. As for memory distrust, no relationship was found between negative evaluation of memory and susceptibility to misinformation. The results confirm the beneficial effect of anxiety on resisting misinformation and demonstrate a greater need for further explorations concerning memory distrust.

Research suggests that placebo can reduce the misinformation effect. We aimed to examine for the first time whether placebo administered in the guise of caffeine can reduce the misinformation effect. One hundred and twenty-three healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to four groups in a 2 Placebo (Present, Not Present) × 2 Narrative (Misleading, Correct) study design. Participants from placebo groups drank 100 ml of placebo solution. They were told that it was water mixed with caffeine which could positively influence their memory. After three minutes, they watched a short movie clip as an original event and read a narrative with misleading details or correct details as a postevent information; they then completed a 22 -item, two -alternative forced -choice questionnaire. The results reveal that the misinformation effect occurred. Although participants in the placebo with misinformation group scored better than participants who did not drink placebo and read the narrative containing misleading details, the difference was not statistically significant. Thus, it is concluded that placebo might not be enough to reduce the misinformation effect when it is administered in the guise of caffeine.

Memory conformity occurs when one person’s memory report influences another person’s subsequent report concerning the same event. In the study, we tested whether an increase in the time between a discussion of the event and its recall would be accompanied by an increase in the number of errors suggesting memory conformity. It turned out that their number was comparable, both a few minutes and a week after the conversation. In both cases, this effect was due to memory mechanisms.

Several studies (Keysar et al., 2012; Lazar et al., 2014) suggest that decisions made in a foreign language are more rational. The authors imply that when thinking in a language which is not our native tongue, analytical, slow, deep-thinking is activated. The question that underlies the present article is whether this is a characteristic of every mental operation in the foreign medium. Studies carried out by Costa et al. (2014), Geipel et al. (2015) and Hadjichristidis et al. (2015) suggest the issue is much more complex than it may seem. The answer to the question above was sought through a study in which 84 Polish advanced users of English as a foreign language were asked to solve mathematical problems from the Cognitive Reflection Test (Frederick, 2005). Initially the subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, who subsequently solved the problems in Polish (native tongue) and in English (foreign language). The article presents the results, discusses them and arrives at a number of conclusions as well as implications for further research.

In experiments concerning the misinformation effect, participants first watch some original material, e.g. a video clip, and read a description that in the experimental group contains information inconsistent with the video clip. Afterwards, all participants answer questions about the video. Typically, the misled group more often reports erroneous misleading information than the non-misled one.Theoretical explanations of this effect are usually formulated in terms of the cognitive theories of memory. This article presents three experiments that demonstrate that the misinformation effect can occur even if the memory of the original and postevent materials is correct. In the experiments, after watching a video clip, reading a narrative about it, and answering questions about the video, the participants were debriefed and required to indicate questions in which they noticed differences between the video and the narrative, as well as provide answers about the original and postevent materials. A substantial number of the participants yielded to the misinformation effect in the memory test even though they had correct memory about the original (and postevent) materials. The discussion emphasizes the need of the social influence framework to explain these results. Key message: the misinformation effect is important for applied forensic eyewitness psychology. To get a better understanding of this effect, there is a need to study it not only in terms of the cognitive psychology of memory, but also from the perspective of social psychology, because in many cases witnesses give wrong answers even when remembering the correct information.

The role of encoding/retrieval conditions compatibility was investigated in a reality-monitoring task. An experiment was conducted which showed a positive effect of reinstating distinctive encoding operations at test. That is, generation of a low-frequency (LF) word from the same word fragment at study and test significantly enhanced item recognition memory. However, reinstating of relatively more automatic operations of reading or generating a highfrequency (HF) word did not influence recognition performance. Moreover, LF words were better recognized than HF words, but memory for source did not depend on the encoding/retrieval match or on the word-frequency. In comparison with reading, generating an item at study significantly enhanced source memory but generating it at test had no effect. The data were analysed using a multinomial modelling approach which allowed ruling out the influence of a response bias on the measurement of memory ability.

Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) assesses different aspects of verbal memory and learning. This test is often used in clinical, educational, and selection contexts. We adapted the Geffen et al’ version for Indonesia and here we present its psychometric properties. We tested the validity via its seven recall trials (A1 to A7), based on theoretical constructs (e.g. the presence and recency effect) via analyses of variance and factor analyses and the test’s reliability via e.g. correlation analyses and Cronbach’s alpha. Two groups of healthy participants with varying ages (16-80) and education (from Elementary school to postgraduate alumni) included 492 persons for the validation, and 50 for the test-retest reliability part of the study with a 6–14-day interval. We tested the validity via its seven recall trials, based on theoretical constructs, and factor analyses. The test’s reliability via Cronbach’s alpha test, and test-retest. The recall scores increased over trials A1 to A5. The expected position effect, primacy, and recency were found for A1 to A5. Factor analysis of Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test revealed three memory constructs. The word “ibu (mother)” caused an anomaly in the position effect of the 15 words. Both Cronbach’s alpha and the test-retest correlations increased from low A1 to satisfying A7. Carry-over results were found in the retest. The Indonesian version of Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test is valid based on the position effect of the recall score and the three clusters covering different aspects of memorizing the items over the seven trials. The score of reliability is only moderate for the recall score, it might be due to the test-retest procedure.

The main aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of reinforced self-affirmation and reinforced failure on the memory misinformation effect. The misinformation effect consists in the witness including some incorrect details into their testimony, stemming from sources other than the original event. In the reinforced self-affirmation procedure, participants first recall their greatest achievements in life and are afterwards given a memory task with positive feedback about their performance on it. In a series of previous experiments, reinforced self-affirmation proved to reduce vulnerability to misinformation. The same result was obtained in the present study. Reinforced failure is a procedure not studied before, consisting in the participants recalling their greatest failures in life, connected with negative feedback about performance on a memory task. It was hypothesized that reinforced failure would increase vulnerability to misinformation. The results pointed to the opposite tendency – participants in the reinforced failure group performed better than those in the misled control group. The reduction in susceptibility to misinformation was greater in the reinforced self-affirmation group than in the reinforced failure one. The results are discussed in terms of the possibility of constructing a method of immunizing people to the misinformation effect available in practice for a wide community of professionals dealing with interrogations.

In this paper, we present nonlinear dynamic behaviour of a system which consists of a mass connected to a rigid support by a shape memory alloy (SMA) element and a damper. In order to disturb the system, a DC motor with limited power supply is connected to the mass, causing an interaction between the vibrating structure and the energy source. The SMA element is characterised using a one-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model, based on the classical Devonshire theory. We analyse the non-ideal system in form of two coupled nonlinear differential equations. Some interesting nonlinear phenomena as the Sommerfeld effect and nonlinear resonance including periodic, chaotic and hyperchaotic regime are presented.
