queens - Opis:
- Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), is one of the most popular contraceptive administered to queens. The results of long-term research in human medicine indicate, that progestogens use, including MPA, is associated with various complications. The majority of animal studies have investigated the carcinogenic effects of MPA and its role in neoplastic processes, in particular, for the mammary gland. Coagulation problems, which are often reported in human subjects, have not been examined in animals. The aim of this study was to determine, whether the administration of MPA as a contraceptive, contributes to changes in the feline hemostatic system. Blood for laboratory analyses was sampled from queens administered the hormone in the form of oral tablets and depot injections. The results from the study have revealed enhanced procoagulant activity (shorter PT and aPTT), without augmented anticoagulant or fibrinolytic activity. Similarly to humans, prolonged administration of MPA to queens, can increase the risk of thrombosis.
