This paper presents a new interim check device for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) built from an AISI 1020 carbon steel bar with the incorporation of calibrated spheres. This artifact’s construction was made to make the interim checks of machines of this type faster and cheaper. Three devices were designed based on the ISO 10360-2 standard, the good practice guide No. 42 (NPL), and prominent authors’ research on the subject. The three options are presented in detail, but only one was built due to budget, size, and adaptability restrictions. An exploratory study was conducted to verify the device’s usability in two CMMs and concluded that the differences between the measurements are not significant. However, one machine had absolute variation values and a total standard deviation higher than the other, generating a larger expanded uncertainty.

W ramach pracy wykonano modernizację maszyny pomiarowej typu MORA 3D, przystosowując ją do szybkiego pomiaru sprawdzianów kształtu. W tym celu wykonano interfejs komunikacyjny pomiędzy maszyną a komputerem oraz opracowano program komputerowy rejestrujący i obrabiający wyniki pomiarów. Oprogramowanie zawiera bazę obiektów mierzonych, co pozwala na szybkie wskazywanie punktów pomiarowych. Na tej podstawie automatyczne wyznaczane są osie mierzonych walców i punkty ich przecięcia. Otrzymane wyniki porównywane są z dokumentacją techniczną i przedstawiane w postaci raportu z pomiaru. Rozwiązanie takie pozwoliło na znaczne skrócenie czasu pomiaru oraz ograniczenie błędów powodowanych przez pracownika wykonującego pomiar. Dodatkowo, system umożliwia kalibrowanie końcówki pomiarowej na wzorcu kulistym.
The purpose of the work was modernisation of the MORA 3D coordinate measuring machine. The machine was adapted to fast measurements of shape. A communications interface enabling efficient connection between the machine and a computer was worked out. Moreover, a computer program recording and processing the measurement results was developed. The software contains a database of the measured objects, which allows for fast and precise choice of the measurement points. Based upon these points, the axes of the measured cylinders as well as their cross-section points are automatically determined. The obtained results are compared with the technical specifications and presented as a written report describing the measurements. The proposed solution shortens significantly the measurement time as well as reduces errors made by a personnel taking the measurements. Additionally, the system allows for calibration of a measurement tip on the ball-shaped contour master.

This paper presents a multivariate regression predictive model of drift on the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) behaviour. Evaluation tests on a CMM with a multi-step gauge were carried out following an extended version of an ISO evaluation procedure with a periodicity of at least once a week and during more than five months. This test procedure consists in measuring the gauge for several range volumes, spatial locations, distances and repetitions. The procedure, environment conditions and even the gauge have been kept invariables, so a massive measurement dataset was collected over time under high repeatability conditions. A multivariate regression analysis has revealed the main parameters that could affect the CMM behaviour, and then detected a trend on the CMM performance drift. A performance model that considers both the size of the measured dimension and the elapsed time since the last CMM calibration has been developed. This model can predict the CMM performance and measurement reliability over time and also can estimate an optimized period between calibrations for a specific measurement length or accuracy level.

The subject of the article is an attempt to determine the impact of the applied measurement strategy on the accuracy of the measurement result. This problem is particularly crucial when measuring large objects. In these cases, it is not always possible to provide ideal conditions for the submission of particular scans. It is necessary to adjust the strategy to specific imposed conditions defined by the geometry of the object and to the time frame of the measurement itself. With regard to the above, an attempt was made to carry out a series of accuracy studies testing the structural light scanner while measuring elements of overall dimensions greater than the measuring capacity of the scanner. At the same time, various potential measuring strategies were simulated in practical applications. Our studies were conducted using a pre-designed test template with a defined distribution pattern of reference points and geometrical elements. Moreover, in order to make an in-depth investigation of the issue, some trials were undertaken with the use of limiting parameters. That means the scanner had both an excess and shortage of information required for a correct assembly of scans. Those scopes were taken into consideration in the study in order to use the acquired knowledge in practical measuring applications. Furthermore, conclusions from the conducted studies indicate peaks and troughs of respective measuring strategies with special care for determining relationships among the used strategies and the measuring accuracy parameters.

Reliable measurement uncertainty is a crucial part of the conformance/nonconformance decision-making process in the field of Quality Control in Manufacturing. The conventional GUM-method cannot be applied to CMM measurements primarily because of lack of an analytical relationship between the input quantities and the measurement. This paper presents calibration uncertainty analysis in commercial CMM-based Coordinate Metrology. For the case study, the hole-plate calibrated by the PTB is used as a workpiece. The paper focuses on thermo-mechanical errors which immediately affect the dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts of high-precision manufacturers. Our findings have highlighted some practical issues related to the importance of maintaining thermal equilibrium before the measurement. The authors have concluded that the thermal influence as an uncertainty contributor of CMM measurement result dominates the overall budgets for this example. The improved calibration uncertainty assessment technique considering thermal influence is described in detail for the use of a wide range of CMM users.

Scanning technology has been becoming more common then ever. Scanning offers new and effective possibilities of measurement. Nowadays planning, production and assembling without high accurate metrology is impossible. Measurement of small, curved elements became much easier with great development of mechanical components of measure machines, such as: guideways, transducers, bearings, servomechanisms. All this improvement made possible to collect with good accuracy points in high density. Algorithms, and computer software were greatly improved as well. Especially, many efforts were put on probe radius correction algorithms development. In this paper a review and a comparison of probe radius correction methods are shown.

This paper presents a comparison of different techniques to capture nominal data for its use in later verification and kinematic parameter identification procedures for articulated arm coordinate measuring machines (AACMM). By using four different probing systems (passive spherical probe, active spherical probe, self-centering passive probe and self-centering active probe) the accuracy and repeatability of captured points has been evaluated by comparing these points to nominal points materialized by a ball-bar gauge distributed in several positions of the measurement volume. Then, by comparing these systems it is possible to characterize the influence of the force over the final results for each of the gauge and probing system configurations. The results with each of the systems studied show the advantages and original accuracy obtained by active probes, and thus their suitability in verification (active probes) and kinematic parameter identification (self-centering active probes) procedures.

W efekcie podjętych prac autorzy otrzymali wstępny model dynamiczny pracy głowic, który może posłużć do kompensacji ich błędów powstałych na skutek zwiększenia prędkości pomiarowej.
Scanning probes, also known as measuring probes, are one of the most often used equipment of coordinate measuring machines (CMM) owing to ability of collecting large number of measuring points as well as taking fast measurements. High speed of measurements and high accuracy of the measuring system are two critical parameters deciding about the machine effectiveness. Dynamics is the most significant factor limiting the measurement accuracy. In most investigations of scanning CMM there is not separated the probing system performance from other sources of the machine errors, so the true error influenced by the probing system is not profoundly determined. This paper presents the scanning probe model regardless of the machine links. The worked out model allows for better understanding of the probing process with higher speed and optimising the measuring process. The future works will aim at proposing optimisation algorithms and applying them to the probing system as well as obtaining improvement in the accuracy.

The paper presents the process of measuring and analysing precision of making toothed wheels for a demonstrator of aeronautical dual-power path gear by means of FDM [2]. A coordinate measuring machine VENTURE BATY has been used in the research. The capabilities of the presented optical measuring machine make it possible to measure spur gears with different modules including small ones (m less than1)which is a great advantage of this kind of measuring equipment. Analysing precision of making elements of gears is one of more important stages in creating them [6]. However, it is necessary to remember that the controlling stage should be carried out in accordance with standards concerning measuring toothed wheels defining this activity. The measuring method presented in the paper and the outcome of measurements allowed for designing a demonstrator of dual-power path gear intended for stand tests. The correct operation of a gear is assured by proper choice of constructional parameters of cooperating wheels taking into account materials used in FDM technology. The optical machine BATY is equipped with FUSION software used while measuring and analysing precision and it allows for data processing and exchanging the data with other programming environments. It is, however, restricted by one data exchange format - DXF. With regard to 2D measurement specific character, the machine does not make it possible to control tooth outline and as a consequence, it is possible to measure only gears with straight teeth. On the other hand, the advantage of the above is the possibility of comparing the measurement to CAD-2D model, which makes it possible to analyse the precision of wheels with non-standard profiles (other than envolute ones).
