Opis:
The search for an efficient estimator of the finite population mean has been a critical problem to the sample survey research community. This study is motivated by the fact that the conducted literature review showed that no research has developed such an average ratio estimator of the population mean that would utilize both the population and the sample medians of study variable, as well as the Srivastava (1967) estimator at a time. In this paper we proposed the power ratio cum median-based ratio estimator of the finite population mean, which is a function of two ratio estimators in the form of an average. The estimator assumes the population to be homogeneous and skewed. The properties (i.e. the Bias and the Mean Squared Error - MSE) of the proposed estimator were derived alongside its asymptotically optimum MSE. We demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed estimator jointly with its efficiency conditions by comparing it to selected estimators described in the literature. Empirically, a real-life dataset from the literature and a simulation study from two skewed distributions (Gamma and Weibull) were used to examine the efficiency gain. The empirical analysis and simulation study demonstrated that the efficiency gain is significant. Hence, the practical application of the proposed estimator is recommended, especially in socio-economic surveys.

Opis:
Artificial neural network models (ANNs) were used in this study to predict reference evapotranspiration (ETo) using climatic data from the meteorological station at the test station in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate as inputs and reference evaporation values computed using the Penman-Monteith (PM) equation. These datasets were used to train and test seven different ANN models that included different combinations of the five diurnal meteorological variables used in this study, namely, maximum and minimum air temperature (Tmax and Tmin ), dew point temperature (Tdw), wind speed (u), and precipitation (P), how well artificial neural networks could predict ETo values. A feed-forward multi-layer artificial neural network was used as the optimization algorithm. Using the tansig transfer function, the final architected has a 6-5-1 structure with 6 neurons in the input layer, 5 neurons in the hidden layer, and 1 neuron in the output layer that corresponds to the reference evapotranspiration. The root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.1295 mm∙day -1 and the correlation coefficient (r) of 0.996 are estimated by artificial neural network ETo models. When fewer inputs are used, ETo values are affected. When three separate variables were employed, the RMSE test values were 0.379 and 0.411 mm∙day -1 and r values of 0.971 and 0.966, respectively, and when two input variables were used, the RMSE test was 0.595 mm∙day -1 and the r of 0.927. The study found that including the time indicator as an input to all groups increases the prediction of ETo values significantly, and that including the rain factor has no effect on network performance. Then, using the Penman-Monteith method to estimate the missing variables by using the ETo calculator the normalised root mean squared error (NRMSE) reached about 30% to predict ETo if all data except temperature is calculated, while the NRMSE reached about of 13.6% when used ANN to predict ETo using variables of temperature only.

Opis:
The confidence interval is an important statistical estimator of population location and dispersion parameters. The paper considers a robust modified confidence interval, which is an adjustment of the Student’s t confidence interval based on the decile mean and decile standard deviation for estimating the population mean of a skewed distribution. The efficiency of the proposed interval estimator is evaluated on the basis of an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study. The coverage ratio and average width of the proposed confidence interval are compared with certain existing and widely used confidence intervals. The simulation results show that, in general, the proposed interval estimator’s performance is highly effective. For illustrative purposes, three real-life data sets are analyzed, which, to a certain extent, support the findings obtained from the simulation study. Thus, we recommend that practitioners use the robust modified confidence interval for estimating the population mean when the data are generated by a normal or skewed distribution.

Auxiliary forcing ventilation system is the most common air distribution system of the development headings in underground mines. This paper reports the development of numerical analysis for calculating the Air Change Effectiveness (ACE) of ventilation performance for auxiliary forcing ventilation system in underground mines. The methodology presented in this paper will be demonstrated through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling and calculated in accordance with ASHRAE F25-1997 methodology. Local age, Mean Age of Air (MAA) and ACE were calculated in three scenarios using CFD modelling to study the ventilation performance. ACE was calculated at locations in the development headings occupied space, based on the MAA from the same ventilation system parameters in three different scenarios. Simulation results indicate that ACE is influenced due to the involvement of objects in the development heading that can reduce the effective volume of the zone. This study provides some new ideas for measuring ACE which can provide better auxiliary ventilation system in underground mines. The proposed methodology could be applied as guidance for design and setup of auxiliary ventilation systems. Results from this CFD modelling will be used for extensive validation study which purpose will be to prove the accuracy of the methodology and, if necessary, to improve it.

Opis:
The Engle-Granger cointegration test is highly sensitive to the choice of lag length and the poor performance of conventional lag selection criteria such as standard information criteria in selecting appropriate optimal lag length for the implementation of the Engle-Granger cointegration test is well-established in the statistical literature. Testing for cointegration within the framework of the residual-based Engle-Granger cointegration methodology is the same as testing for the stationarity of the residual series via the augmented Dickey-Fuller test which is well known to be sensitive to the choice of lag length. Given an array of candidate optimal lag lengths that may be suggested by different standard information criteria, the applied researchers are faced with the problem of deciding the best optimal lag among the candidate optimal lag lengths suggested by different standard information criteria, which are often either underestimated or overestimated. In an attempt to address this well-known major pitfall of standard information criteria, this paper introduces a new lag selection criterion called a modified Koyck mean lag approach based on partial correlation criterion for the selection of optimal lag length for the residual-based Engle-Granger cointegration test. Based on empirical findings, it was observed that in some instances over-specification of lag length can bias the Engle-Granger cointegration test towards the rejection of a true cointegration relationship and non-rejection of a spurious cointegration relationship. Using real-life data, we present an empirical illustration which demonstrates that our proposed criterion outperformed the standard information criteria in selecting appropriate optimal truncation lag for the implementation of the Engle-Granger cointegration test using both augmented Dickey-Fuller and generalized least squares Dickey-Fuller tests.

In this paper, we introduce new concepts of aging for lifetime distributions. The main idea is the comparison between reversed mean residual life of the random variables X and (X − t | X > t), for all t > 0. Firstly, with some examples, we highlight the role of the proposed aging classes in reliability and life testing. Then, we try to find the connection between the new aging classes and other aging classes well-known from the literature. Reliability properties of the new classes are studied. Formally, we derive the preservation property under monotonic transformations. Some Rother characterization and implications are studied.

The resulting tidal level variability (high tide, mean sea level and low tide) recorded from Santos Dock Company tide gauge (1940 to 2014) shows a consistent increasing trend. The estimation about the magnitude of mean sea level rise (MSLR) in recommendations, guidelines or requirements issued by different countries and agencies from 1990 provide examples of different approaches used around the world in comparison with the local trends obtained for Santos Port. It is concluded that MSLR will have a considerable impact upon the port and adjacent areas, with approximately 1.0 m rise estimated from 1990 to 2100. Baixada Santista is a lowland situated a few meters upper from the sea level and some areas are possible to be submerged in the end of this century. Not only the wetlands of mangroves will be affected, but also the infrastructures, residential zones and the port will face problems. The major SLR impacts upon port operation will be the reduction of freeboard of the quays, flooding of storage yards (and other low storage areas) and of the internal transport tracks or rails. Also the increasing sedimentation in the nautical areas of access channels, turning basins and berths, will induce more maintenance dredging.

Opis:
In this paper, we give an overview and a detail analysis of our approach for vision-based real-time traffic parameters estimation using low-resolution web cameras. Traffic parameters estimation approach mainly includes three major steps, (1) stable background estimation, (2) vehicle detection, mean speed and traffic flow estimation, and (3) traffic scene classification into three states (normal and congested). The background image is estimated and updated in realtime by novel background estimation algorithm based on the median of First-in-First-Out (FIFO) buffer of rectified traffic images. Vehicles are detected by background subtraction followed by post-processing steps. By exploiting the domain knowledge of real-world traffic flow patterns, mean speed and traffic flow can be estimated reliably and accurately. Naive Bayes classifier with statistical features is used for traffic scene classification. The traffic parameter estimation approach is tested and evaluated at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) urban road research laboratory in Berlin for 24 hours of live streaming data from web-cameras with frames per second 1, 5 and 10. Image resolution is 348 x 259 and JPEG compression is 50%. Processed traffic data is cross-checked with synchronized induction loop data. Detailed evaluation and analysis shows high accuracy and robustness of traffic parameters estimation approach using low-resolution web-cameras under challenging traffic conditions.

In this work, we study the equilibrium reinsurance/ new business and investment strategy for mean-variance insurers, under the assumption that the risk aversion is a function of current wealth level. The surplus of the agents is represented by a sum of a compound process and a linear premium perturbed with a Brownian component. The financial market consists of one riskless asset and a multiple risky assets whose price processes are driven by Poisson random measures and independent Brownian motions. We characterize explicit expressions for the time-consistent Nash equilibrium strategy and the equilibrium value function via a forward-backward stochastic system and an equilibrium condition. An interesting feature of these FBSDEs is that a time parameter is involved, so that they form a flow of FBSDEs. Furthermore, a feedback representation of an equilibrium solution is derived. This solution provides a tool for comparing the equilibrium strategy with those derived in other papers, where some special cases were studied by the dynamic programming argument.

Coefficient of Variation (C.V) is a unitless measure of dispersion. Hence it is widely used in many scientific and social investigations. Although a lot of work has been done concerning C.V in the infinite population models, it has been neglected in the finite populations. Many areas of applications of C.V involves the finite populations like the use in official statistics and economic surveys of the World Bank. This has motivated us to propose six new estimators of the population C.V. In finite population studies regression estimators are widely used and the idea is exploited to propose the new estimators. Three of the proposed estimators are the regression estimators of the C.V for the study variable while the other three estimators makes use of the regression estimators of population mean and variance to estimate the ratio , the population C.V for the study variable. The bias and mean square error (MSE) of these estimators were derived for the simple random sampling design. The performance of these estimators is compared using two real life data sets. The simulation is carried out to compare the estimators in terms of coverage probability and the length of the confidence interval. The small sample comparison indicates that two of the proposed estimators perform better than the sample C.V. The regression estimator using the information on the Population C.V of the auxiliary variable emerges as the best estimator.

In the paper, a measurement error for the white noise mean power and for the low-pass, second-order filtration of noise mean power, resulting from modification of signal spectrum at the stage of signal sampling have been discussed. Possibility of the decreasing of loss information during wide-band signal sampling has been pointed out. Transfer errors of the mean power of pre-filtered white noise for standard acquisition unit and for additional correction have been particularly calculated. Thus, this functions prove that introduction of filters with the correction characteristic is useful. Moreover, the obtained characteristics describe transfer error versus the value of the correction coefficient.

Observations from mixtures of different subpopulations are common in biological and sociological studies. Proportion of each subpopulation in a group is known and can vary from group to group. Our aim is to estimate the means of an observed variable for subjects, which belong to each subpopulation. In this paper we consider the case, when subpopulations are defined by answers on so called “sensitive questions”. We consider some parametric and nonparametric estimates of the subpopulation means, such as weighted means, maximum likelihood and weighted least squares estimates. Finite sample properties of these estimates are analyzed. Mean square errors of the estimates are compared on simulated data. Some asymptotic results are also given.

Nowadays, underwater image identification is a challenging task for many researchers focusing on various ap plications, such as tracking fish species, monitoring coral reef species, and counting marine species. Because underwater im ages frequently suffer from distortion and light attenuation, pre-processing steps are required in order to enhance their quality. In this paper, we used multiple edge detection techniques to determine the edges of the underwater images. The pictures were pre-processed with the use of specific techniques, such as enhancement processing, Wiener filtering, median filtering and thresholding. Coral reef pictures were used as a dataset of underwater images to test the efficiency of each edge detection method used in the experiment. All coral reef image datasets were captured using an underwater GoPro camera. The performance of each edge detection technique was evaluated using mean square error (MSE) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). The lowest MSE value and the highest PSNR value represent the best quality of underwater images. The results of the experiment showed that the Canny edge detection technique outperformed other approaches used in the course of the project.
