We develop several methods of realization of scalar product and generalized moment problems. Constructions are made by use of a Hilbertian method or a fixed point method. The constructed solutions are rational fractions and exponentials of polynomials. They are connected to entropy maximization. We give the general form of the maximizing solution. We show how it is deduced from the maximizing solution of the algebraic moment problem.

Opis:
The paper attempts to rectify what appear to be popular but elementary misconceptions about the concept of consumer surplus in the context of Marshallian demand curves. It is primarily addressed to teachers of microeconomics at the undergraduate level or in MBA programs of business schools. The main text informs the reader about the model/context and the results we are concerned with, all of the latter being a comprehensive teaching note, relegated to an appendix of the paper. Thus, the potential instructor may use the main text to motivate himself/ herself and at the same time inform his/her students as to the topic i.e. the rehabilitation of consumer surplus as an exact measure of welfare from the stand-point of cost benefit analysis. Thereafter the appendix can be referred to for a more formal presentation. The technical results contained in the appendix begin by showing that willingness to pay is the area under the demand curve if and only if consumers are surplus maximizers. The last result in the appendix is a theoretically ‘happy ending’ since it shows that for purposes of applied economics, budget constrained preference maximization implies surplus maximization and hence for such consumers, willingness to pay is indeed the area under the demand curve up to the quantity consumed.

We propose a new dynamical model of product goodwill. It is assumed that the product is sold in many market segments. The segments here are distinct according to the age of the consumers. We take into account the fact that the product goodwill in a segment of new consumers strongly depends on: the level of product goodwill in existing consumer segments, on consumer recommendations, and on advertising efforts which are diverse for different market segments and times. In our optimal control model, the control variables are the company’s advertising efforts in order to maximize its profits. The optimal solution of this model is obtained by the use of the maximum principle. Additionally, the sensitivity of this solution to different analytical forms of consumer recommendation functions is briefly analysed.

The paper contains a new classification of risk situations, which enables the unified treatment of all kinds of problems concerning risk and uncertainty. One of the implications which one can draw from this classification is that there is no sense to formu-late general risk theories. In majority of situation the so called risk management is based on common sense supported by past experiences and some analytical tools. However, there are situations of a particular practical significance which for nearly one hundreds of years have been intensively investigated. As a result of these endeavors a number of models have been developed, particularly models known as expected utility models, and non-expected utility models. One of the main goals of this paper is to highlight the mean-ing of the basic notations used in these models: utility and subjective expected utility.

This paper addresses the joint design of transmitter and receiver for multichannel data transmission over dispersive channels. The transmitter is assumed to consist of FIR filters and the channel impulse response is allowed to have an arbitrary length. The design criterion is the maximization of the information rate between transmitter input and receiver output under the constraint of a fixed transmit power. A link to minimum mean squared error designs for a similar setting is established. The proposed algorithm allows a straightforward transmitter design and generally yields a near-optimum solution for the transmit filters. Under certain conditions. the exact solution for the globally optimal transmitter is obtained.

It is demonstrated that (1) transport enterprises can operate on the market with a profit of zero and (2) they can finance their investments without profit. The rigid conditions of pure competition are not necessary. It is enough to adjust the different situations of incomplete competition by setting equal and homogeneous rules for accounting, founding and running enterprises well as financing. A special rule is to have no foreign trade. But these conditions are not stringent. There are many non-profit-enterprises in Austria and a lot of other countries which are operating without these conditions. The result is a new maxim for (transport) economics: Application of the principle of covering the costs and optimization of quality in spite of profit maximization! The postulate to consider the quality in transport theory and policy has the same long tradition as the postulate to applicate the principle of covering the costs. The joint application will bring more benefit for realizing welfare and an equal distribution of income and property.

The author sets out to identify factors and methods that can support students in the process of choosing lecturers (utility maximization) for bachelor‑level courses at the Warsaw School of Economics. The paper describes four strategies used by students based on fear, field of study, scholarships and recruitment. The key point of the research was to analyze preferences before and after institutional changes at the university. The empirical part of the research provides an analysis based on descriptive statistics as well as mixed, logit, probit, linear and Poisson models, multinomial logit models and Quinlan’s algorithm (C 4.5). The data for the research were provided by the Warsaw School of Economics’ IT center. The accuracy of the forecasts (comparison of actual and predicted values) ranges between 66% and 88%, in most cases exceeding 72%, Ziółkowski says. The author concludes that the research enabled him to identify methods that can optimize students’ decision‑making processes and at the same time help the university redesign some of its courses to better meet the needs of students and produce job‑ready graduates.
W części empirycznej wykorzystano: statystyki opisowe, modele mieszane, logitowe, probitowe, quasi‑dwumianowe, regresję liniową, Poissona, wielomianową regresję logistyczną i algorytm C4.5 Quinlana. Do pracy wykorzystano dane Centrum Informatycznego SGH.

Goal – this article’s main goal is to showing that the truly important economic processes happen at the microeconomic level, they happen in enterprises. This is where the surplus value is produced. Producing this value is not easy, however, and is associated with a number of challenges. Research methodology – the author focuses on the descriptive method, which shows, on the one hand, the importance of activity at the microeconomic level, and on the other hand, indicating selected challenges faced by modern enterprises. Score/results – the article allowed to indicate the specificity of conditions in which modern enterprises operate. Large number of them are able to maintain their position in the industry for a very long time. It is able, but it is not so sure. In the conditions of global competition, nothing is certain in the long run, including the position of enterprises. They can work better or worse, they can be very small or larger, they can grow or curl, unfortunately they also fall. Originality/value – the article is a standard description of economic reality. It has no novelty or innovative aspects, it only organizes the described reality.

Opis:
Background. Maize is a major cereal consumed by nearly all Nigerian households and accounts for about 43% of calorie intake. Rapid population growth and urbanization coupled with infrastructural developments have made agricultural resources very limited in supply and constrained maize production. This necessitates the need for an optimum enterprise combination in a maize based cropping system to guarantee the profit maximization objective of maize farming households. Hence, the study investigated optimum enterprise combinations in maize based cropping systems in the Southern Agricultural Zone of Adamawa State, Nigeria. This study would be of benefit to maize farmers that may need information on maize based enterprise combination that give optimum level of returns. Material and methods. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 130 respondents. Data were collected during the 2018/2019 cropping season and analysed using descriptive statistics, Gross Margin (GM) analysis and the Linear Programming (LP) model . Results. Result of the distribution of the respondents on the basis of maize based enterprises in the study area showed the largest group (40%) of the respondents practiced sole maize enterprises. The gross margin analysis revealed that seven enterprises (maize/rice, maize/groundnut, maize/sorghum, maize/soybean, maize/sugarcane, maize/yam and maize/benniseed) were sustainable as their respective total revenue was higher than their total variable cost. The linear programming model recommends that each farmer grows a mix of three crops in an area ratio of 6.15:3.35:1.50 for maize/soybean, maize/benniseed and maize/ sorghum, respectively, to give a gross margin of N 544,999.04 (1,192.41 €) for crops grown on an area of 11 ha. Conclusion. The study recommended crop mixtures based on their hectarage allocation as prescribed in the optimum farm plans would have generated income as follows: maize/soybean (N 367,449.89 (804.15 €)), maize/benniseed (N 104,034.25 (227.85 €)) and maize/sorghum (N 73,514.89 (160.85 €)). The recommended crop mixtures would have increased the farmers’ gross margin by 17%.
Do badań wybrano 130 respondentów spośród 1336 zarejestrowanych plantatorów kukurydzy pochodzących z 16 społeczności rolniczych. W badaniach wykazano, że mieszanki upraw, zgodnie z zaleceniami optymalnych planów gospodarstw, przyniosłyby następujące dochody: kukurydza/soja (367 449,89 N (804.15 €)), kukurydza/nasiona sezamu (104 034,25 N (227.85 €)) i kukurydza/sorgo (73 514,89 N (160.85 €)). Zalecane mieszanki upraw mogą zwiększyć marżę brutto rolników o 17%.

The main aim of this study is to replicate the effect shown by Traczyk et al. (2018), where individuals with higher statistical numeracy, compared to individuals with lower statistical numeracy, employed a more effortful choice strategy when outcomes were meaningful. I hypothesize that participants with higher numeracy will be more likely to make choices predicted by Cumulative Prospect Theory and Expected Value theory (CPT/EV) in high-payoff problems than in low-payoff problems. Data collection was done online by appointing 73 participants. Participants’ preference, fluid intelligence, objective and subjective numeracy were measured using thirteen high and eleven low payoff choice problems, International Cognitive Ability Resource (ICAR), Berlin Numeracy Test (BNT), and Subjective Numeracy Scale (SNS), respectively. All the measures mentioned above were presented randomly. Results showed that all participants, in high-payoff condition, on average maximized EV; however, participants with high BNT scores were more likely to make choices consistent with CPT/EV predictions than individuals with low BNT scores. Furthermore, compared to less numerate participants, highly numerate participants were less likely to make choices consistent with CPT/EV predictions in low-payoff condition. Highly numerate individuals adjusted their choice strategy by modulating their response time, indicating their discernible sensitivity towards large asymmetry in payoff. In conclusion, the effect shown by Traczyk et al. (2018) was successfully replicated.

Opis:
Network dimensioning is a specific kind of the resource allocation problem. One of the tasks in the network optimization is to maximize the total flow on given pairs of nodes (so-called demands or paths between source and target). The task can be more complicated when different revenue/profit gained from each unit of traffic stream allocated on each demand is taken into account. When the total revenue is maximized the problem of starvation of less attractive paths can appear. Therefore, it is important to include some fairness criteria to preserve connections between all the demands on a given degree of quality, also for the least attractive paths. In this paper, a new bicriteria ratio optimization method which takes into account both, the revenue and the fairness is proposed. Mathematical model is built in a form of linear programming. The solutions are analyzed with some statistical measures to evaluate their quality, with respect to fairness and efficiency. In particular, the Gini’s coefficient is used for this purpose.
