Opis:
The relationships between maternal parenting attitudes and preschoolers’ hot and cool executive functions (EF) were examined. Forty-eight children aged 3 to 4 years and their mothers took part in the study. Self-report questionnaire concerning parenting attitudes was obtained from the mothers of children who performed a set of EF tasks. Additionally, both maternal and child verbal ability were controlled. It was found that maternal parenting attitudes were related only to child cool EF. Protecting attitude was positively related to child inhibitory control and autonomy support was negatively related to child set-shifting ability. Further analyses revealed that maternal autonomy support accounted for unique variance in child set-shifting, above and beyond the child’s age. On the other hand, protecting attitude accounted for unique variance in child inhibitory control, above and beyond child verbal ability. The findings provide further evidence for the importance of mother-child relationships in children’s EF development.

Opis:
Maternity is a social role, as it supplies new members of the society and it involves a lot of people when it is being realized. Accepting the child is a great event for the whole family, but it is also significant for the society. The society also has a significant influence on forming the attitudes towards maternity. It happens not only through the educational process in the family, Church or school, but also through the information that is transmitted by the mass media, through legislature, politics and economy. Demographic problems imply serious economic consequences connected with maintaining the aging society. However, one of the factors that have a negative influence on the decision of giving birth to children is a lack of support from the family in realizing the procreative function. Poland that has one of the lowest Total Fertility Rates in European countries is numbered among these EU countries that allot the least money for children. For forming attitudes towards maternity the following phenomena are not unimportant: a critical attitude towards families with many children stereotypically considered as pathological, promoting contraception, making efforts to liberalize the abortion law, reducing man to a laboratory problem by fertilization in vitro. More social responsibility is necessary for forming proper attitudes towards maternity and preparing the conditions for its decent realization.

Opis:
The paper presents estimation results of a logistic regression developed in order to explore such predictors of employment of mothers with children up to 14 years old in Poland as maternal attitudes towards cultural gender roles, a parental family of a working mother and sharing household and childcare duties between parents. The analysis was based on the data from the first wave of the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS-PL1). It was found that the family pattern of a working mother significantly increased the chances of employment of her daughter having her own offspring. Egalitarian attitudes towards gender roles have not proved to be a significant predictor of maternal employment. However, the stronger mother’s approval of the statement that “a small child suffers when his/her mother works” was, the lower the likelihood was of her employment. A larger number of children turned out to be a stimulus for maternal employment when the division of responsibilities between partners and the extent of informal childcare use were controlled for in the model.
