Protein adsorption on solid surfaces is a widespread phenomenon of large biological and biotechnological significance. Conformational changes are likely to accompany protein adsorption, but are difficult to evidence directly. Nevertheless they have important consequences, since the partial unfolding of protein domains can expose hitherto hidden amino acids. This remodeling of the protein surface can trigger the activation of molecular complexes such as the blood coagulation cascade or the innate immune complement system. In the case of extracellular matrix, it can also change the way cells interact with the material surfaces and result in modified cell behavior. In this review, we present direct and indirect evidences that support the view that some proteins change their conformation upon adsorption. We also show that both physical and chemical methods are needed to study the extent and kinetics of protein conformational changes. In particular, AFM techniques and cryo-electron microscopy provide useful and complementary information. We then review the chemical and topological features of both proteins and material surfaces in relation with protein adsorption. Mutating key amino acids in proteins changes their stability and this is related to material-induced conformational changes, as shown for instance with insulin. In addition, combinatorial methods should provide valuable information about peptide or antibody adsorption on well-defined material surfaces. These techniques could be combined with molecular modeling methods to decipher the rules governing conformational changes associated with protein adsorption.

The dynamical linear theory of a material surface placed in vacuum and subjected to an external strong magnetostatic field is considered. Motion of the surface is described by a position function The material of the surface is assumed to be an isotropic elastic non-magnetizable electric conductor. The residual stress is taken into account. Displacement-based field equations are obtained in coordinate-free notation.
Przedmiotem rozważań jest teoria liniowa powierzchni materialnej umieszczonej w próżni i poddanej działaniu silnego zewnętrznego pola magnetostatycznego. Ruch powierzchni opisuje funkcja położenia. Założono, że materiał powierzchni jest izotropowy, sprężysty, niemagnetozywalny i przewodzący prąd elektryczny. Uwzględniono naprężenia rezydualne. Otrzymano równania rozwiązujące z użyciem przemieszczeń.

The properties of the surface layer of construction materials are very important for making adhesive bonds. The article presents the test results for surface free energy in PA6 polyamide subjected to surface layer modification using the ozonation process. To develop the surface geometrically, the samples were subjected to mechanical processing. The comparison of results demonstrated that ozonation is an efficient and eco-friendly method of modifying the surface layer. The article also presents the comparison results for measurements of selected surface roughness parameters.

Opis:
Flap peening (FP) is a cold working technique used to apply a compressive force using small shots, this will lead to enhance the surface properties that it can sustain for long life during working conditions. In this study, several aircraft aluminum alloys materials namely; 2219 T6, 2024 T6, 7075 T6, and 6061 T6 were flap peened under different rotational speeds. The effect of rotational speed on the average surface roughness (Ra) and average surface micro hardness have been investigated. As seen by the Scanning Electron Microscope SEM phots that the hardness of peened layer is increased. It was found that as the flap peening speeds increase the percent change in surface roughness (Ra) increases, and the percent change in surface micro hardness decreases. The maximum increase in Ra occurs in 2219 T80 and the minimum in 6061 T6 alloys, and for hardness, it is reported that the maximum occurs in 6061 T6 and the minimum in 2019 T80 alloy.

EDM machining of Al 6061 was performed under varying conditions of pulse current and pulse duration. Graphite was used as an electrode material with distilled water and paraffin oil as two different dielectric mediums. The aim is to characterize the surface integrity produced as a result of EDM machining under both varying electrical and non-electrical parameters as it is important in determining the service life of EDM machined components. The vertical, horizontal and corner surfaces are studied independently for each single set of conditions. The average white layer thickness (AWLT) and surface roughness was found to be dependent on pulse current values and pulse duration. The dielectric medium also has an influence on the thickness and nature of white layer. It was found that the thickness and nature of the white layer formed from distilled water is different from that of paraffin oil. New methods of AWLT and surface roughness measurement through an optical microscope are described. The surface roughness method developed was calibrated against an identical surface roughness tester. Finally, material removal rate, tool wear rate, the presence of micro cracks, voids and globules were compared for different conditions and conclusions were drawn according to the actual physical conditions during machining.

This paper presents methods of separating the plateau part for various types of two-process profiles, having the traces of two processes. The traditional method based on the plateau-valley threshold, according to the ISO 13565-3 standard, is not always sufficient, since the valley portion can include plateau roughness. Starting and finishing points of each plateau in the measured profiles should be determined. The procedure found in the technical literature depends on setting not only the plateau-valley threshold but also a lower threshold. This approach was a little modified for profiles that contain both random and deterministic topography components. A new procedure of determination of the lower threshold was proposed for stratified profiles containing two deterministic parts. The valleys can be characterized by their widths and the distance between them. In addition, a description of the material probability curve is proposed.

Mirror-polishing processes have recently been required to add high quality, high-precision precision and multi-functionality to industrial products. However, this requires skilled manual work, making it difficult to improve productivity. Automatic polishing of these products is also very difficult. Furthermore, mirror-polishing process of stainless steel, titanium and glass, which are often used in high-value-added medical products, is also difficult. Therefore, in this study, a technology for high-precision, automatic mirror polishing of three difficult-to-polish materials - stainless steel, titanium and glass - was developed and evaluated. First, the difficult-to-polish properties of different materials were considered, and then tools were developed to improve these properties and enable suitable mirror-polishing processes. Next, a polishing slurry was developed to improve the surface roughness (Rz = 0.1 μm or less). Finally, the optimum polishing conditions for the proposed mirror-polishing process were determined by design of experiment and then evaluated. It was concluded that; (1) In order to perform mirror-polishing processes of three types of workpieces, stainless steel (SUS304), titanium (pure titanium) and glass (quartz glass), new polishing tool and slurries corresponding to each material were developed and the optimum polishing processing conditions were clarified, (2) Using (1), mirror-polishing processes of each material with a surface roughness of Rz = 0.1 μm has been achieved.

Angular momentum pumps are very often used in cooling circuits of medium and high power engines, power plant boilers as well as bilge, ballast and firefighting installations. Such an extensive use of angular momentum pumps on board is connected with their numerous advantages. However, during operation the wear of marine hull, the rotor and shaft seals take place. The research attempts to increase the service life of shafts. The article presents the research results of pump shaft pins after finish lathing. The research was performed on a roller 60 mm in diameter made of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The finish tooling of pump shaft pins was carried out on a universal CDS 6250 BX-1000 centre lathe. The finish lathing process was carried out by means of Sandvik Coromant cutting tool with replaceable inserts. In the research of lathing, process used inserts with Wiper technology. During the lathing, the optimal cutting parameters were used for inserts: CCMT09T302WF, CCMT09T304WF and CCMT09T308WF. The cutting process was performed at side angle of 90° ± 3°. The process of lathing used cutting tool dynamometer DKM 2010. During the research, the effect of cutting tool geometric on surface roughness parameter Ra of steel applied to marine pumps shaft pins was determined. The article presents the research results of material ratio parameters. In addition provides an examples shaft surface profile analysis and material ratio. Measurement of surface roughness and material ratio parameters was performed by T8000 profilometer.

In this study, we investigated the bonding mechanism of surface-treated steel with an Al-Si alloy in order to produce steel-aluminum (STL-Al) hybrid composite materials by cast-bonding. The results showed that there are differences in the phase and properties of the hybrid composite materials bonded specimens depending on the surface treatment of the steel sheet used, and that the bonding conditions can be controlled further by detailed conditions of the surface treatment. Based on the interfacial bonding strengths measured here, the galvanized surface treatment induced metallurgical bonding to form a reaction layer on the bonding surface and was determined to be the most effective surface treatment.

The paper deals with a study of relations between the measured Ra, Rq, Rz surface roughness parameters, the traverse speed of cutting head v and the vibration parameters, PtP, RMS, vRa, generated during abrasive water jet cutting of the AISI 309 stainless steel. Equations for prediction of the surface roughness parameters were derived according to the vibration parameter and the traverse speed of cutting head. Accuracy of the equations is described according to the Euclidean distances. The results are suitable for an on-line control model simulating abrasive water jet cutting and machining using an accompanying physical phenomenon for the process control which eliminates intervention of the operator.

W artykule omówiony został wpływ impregnacji narzędzi ściernych na chropowatość zgrubną Ra powierzchni materiału trudnoobrabialnego. Materiałem obrabianym był stop aluminium PA6. Do procesu szlifowania użyto uniwersalnej frezarki pionowej (Jafa) zaopatrzonej w wielonarzędziową głowicę szlifiersko-polerską do obróbki dużych powierzchni płaskich oraz kształtowych. Przedstawiono wstępne wyniki badań podczas procesu obróbki materiału trudnoobrabialnego z zastosowaniem ściernic garnkowych z węglika krzemu o spoiwie ceramicznym impregnowanych grafitem, tworzywem sztucznym oraz silikonem. Celem pracy było sprawdzenie możliwości redukcji adhezji materiału trudnoskrawalnego do powierzchni czynnej narzędzia ściernego.
This paper describes the influence of treated grinding wheels on hard-to cut material roughness Ra. The workpiece were PA6 aluminum alloy. To grinding process was used a horizontal milling machine (Jafa) provided with multi-tool wheelhead. The results of preliminary research with using treated with graphite, silicon and plastic a vitrified bonded straight cup silicon carbide grinding wheels were also conduced. The main objective of this research was to check the potential of treatment the grinding wheels and in consequence reduce the high intensity adhesion of chips to the active surface of the grinding wheel.

In this paper some important mechanical cutting characteristics such as cutting forces, specific cutting energy and cutting power were determined when finish turning of hardened 41Cr4 alloy steel and AISI 52100 and JIS-SUJ2 bearing steels using CBN tools with variable tool corner radius based on the experimental study and literature data. The tool corner radius was varied from 400 to 2400 µm and, in addition, flank wear effect was taken into account. Moreover, surface roughness produced by CBN tools with different tool corner radius was compared and surface finish obtained was characterized in terms of potential functional performance. As a result, the changes of Ra and Rz roughness parameters and relevant material distribution curves and bearing parameters in the form of Symmetrical Curve of Geometrical Contact (SCGC) are presented.
W pracy określono niektóre charakterystyki procesu skrawania m.in. składowe siły, energię właściwą i moc skrawania w wykańczającym toczeniu utwardzonej stali stopowej 41Cr4 oraz stali łożyskowej AISI 52100 i JIS-SUJ2 narzędziami z CBN o zmiennym promieniu naroża. W analizie wyników uwzględniono dane doświadczalne i literaturowe. Stosowano promień naroża w zakresie od 400 do 2400 µm. Ustalono również wpływ zużycia ostrza na powierzchni przyłożenia. Dodatkowo, porównano chropowatość powierzchni generowaną ostrzami z CBN o zmiennym promieniu naroża oraz potencjalne właściwości eksploatacyjne powierzchni. Uzyskano zmianę zależności parametrów chropowatości powierzchni Ra i Rz oraz parametrów udziału materiałowego w postaci symetrycznych krzywych kontaktu geometrycznego (SCGC) powierzchni – krzywych Kaczmarka.

In this investigation, a sound absorbing material is coupled with an active surface to reduce sound pressure within an acoustic duct. In this way, an enhancement of the passive foam performance can be observed because of further acceleration of the fluid particles within the foam pores. The experimental activity implements noise control strategies to increase damping within the cavity through acoustic foam with a flexible backing plate, acted by piezoelectric actuators.
W pracy zbadano skuteczność zastosowania materiału absorbującego dźwięk współpracującego z aktywną powierzchnią przeznaczoną do redukcji ciśnienia akustycznego w dukcie. Zaobserwowano, że takie skojarzenie znacznie poprawia pasywne właściwości samej dźwiękochłonnej pianki wskutek zwiększenia przyspieszeń cząstek płynu zawartego w porach pianki.Wwyniku badań doświadczalnych uzyskano strategie kontroli hałasu zwiększające tłumienie poprzez użycie akustycznej pianki na elastycznej płycie domykającej dukt i sterowanej elementami piezoelektrycznymi.

Opis:
Residual stress has a great influence on the metal, but it is difficult to measure at small area using a general method. Residual stress calculations using the Vickers indentation can solve this problem. In this paper, a numerical simulation has been made for the residual stress measurement method of metal material deformed by high-speed impact. Then, the stress-strain curve at the high-speed deformation was confirmed through actual experiments, and the residual stresses generated thereafter were calculated by the Vickers indenter method. A Vickers indentation analysis under the same conditions was performed at the position where a residual stress of about 169.39 MPa was generated. Experiments were carried out and high speed impact was applied to the specimen to generate residual stress. The obtained results indicate that it is possible to identify residual stresses in various metals with various shapes through Vickers indentation measurements, and to use them for process and quality control.

The challenge for cardiovascular tissue engineers is to design hemocompatible biomaterials that promote neo-tissue formation. Cardiovascular implants are prone to occlusion caused by surface thrombogenicity. In native tissue non-thrombogenic surface is provided by the endothelium. Endothelialization of implantable cardiovascular devices is thereby among the techniques of functionalizing biomaterials. Surfaces covered with peptides have been shown to enhance endothelial cells adhesion and proliferation. For the purpose of further cell-specifi c peptides immobilization, a three-step method for incorporating carboxyl groups onto a polyurethane surface was developed. In the fi rst step silanol groups were incorporated into the polyurethane surface. Successful reaction was proven by FTIR analysis. Subsequently, incorporation of surface amine groups was proceeded. In the last step amine groups were acylated using glutaric anhydride to create carboxylates. To determine the presence of surface functional groups, colorimetric method was applied. Measurement of water contact angle revealed signifi cant increase in surface hydrophilicity.

Lapping process is commonly used for ultra-precision machining of various materials. An essential role during lapping plays flatness of the wheel-working surface because workpiece surface takes mirror image of it. Due to its applications requiring extreme size accuracy, straightness and concentricity, it is very important that working surface remains flat in the course of machining. Getting out of flatness can be caused by uneven wear or heating. To prevent nonuniform wear of lapping plate surface, conditioning rings should be suited appropriate. Lapping machines producers and researchers make recommendations about proper rings position during machining. To provide constant temperature of the wheel, cooling systems are applied in modern machines, but not in all of them. Therefore, wheel temperature problem is significant one, and it should be known. This paper presents results of authors work on choosing proper measurement method of lapping plate temperature. During lapping process wheel is rotating. Maximum velocity value for ABRALAP 380 lapping machine is 65 rev/min. Mainly for this reason, contactless infrared method was selected. Because getting an accurate temperature of an object using this method is difficult, during experiments temperature rise not exact value were analysed. There were also presented results of experiments which goal was to find lap plate emissivity.

The paper presents application of an energy-based finite element and a local relaxation method to computer calculation of deformation of a ring made of hyperelastic material. The present study considers a surface friction mechanism. This mechanism is a physical phenomenon counteracting the relative motion of the contacting bodies. Friction causes loss of energy the dissipation of which is a result of wearing out of the bodies' surfaces and heat emission. This directly affects the shape of the deformed body. The above statements are confirmed by the results of computer calculation performed for rubber ring with rectangular cross-section. Rubber is a nearly incompressible material and, therefore, requires application of special mechanical models of the material properties as well as proper calculation methods. Implementation of energy-based finite element and local relaxation method enables studying the ring deformation with consideration of nonlinear properties of rubber and its displacements in the platering contact plane, according to the value of a friction coefficient between rubber and the plate material. Application of energy method resulted in determination of the work of friction forces and the energy density distribution of volumetric and deviatoric strain. It also simplified energy analysis of the surface friction mechanism and influence of the friction coefficient value on the process of the ring deformation.

The present work addresses the problem of determining under what conditions the impending slip state or the steady sliding of a linear elastic orthotropic layer or half space with respect to a rigid flat obstacle is dynamically unstable. In other words, we search the conditions for the occurrence of smooth exponentially growing dynamic solutions with perturbed initial conditions arbitrarily close to the steady sliding state, taking the system away from the equilibrium state or the steady sliding state. Previously authors have shown that a linear elastic isotropic half space compressed against and sliding with respect to a rigid flat surface may get unstable by flutter when the coefficient of friction μ and Poisson's ratio ν are sufficiently large. In the isotropic case they have been able to derive closed form analytic expressions for the exponentially growing unstable solutions as well as for the borders of the stability regions in the space of parameters, because in the isotropic case there are only two dimensionless parameters (μ and ν). Already for the simplest version of orthotropy (an orthotropic transversally isotropic material) there are seven governing parameters (μ, five independent material constants and the orientation of the principal directions of orthotropy) and the expressions become very lengthy and literally impossible to manipulate manually. The orthotropic case addressed here is impossible to solve with simple closed form expressions, and therefore the use of computer algebra software is required, the main commands being indicated in the text.

W artykule przedstawiono badania w zakresie nowego materiału inżynierskiego jakim staje się geopolimer. Jest materiałem z którego można tworzyć warstwy ochronne, co prawda posiada dużą zdolność do pochłaniania wilgoci jednak jego skład jest silnie zasadowy i przez to jego nasiąkanie nie wpływa niekorzystnie na chronioną konstrukcję. Badania obejmują wpływ różnych środowisk korozyjnych na zmianę masy badanych próbek w trakcie badania jak również na strukturę powierzchni w skali makroskopowej.
Geopolymer is a material that could form a protective layer on the metal. Geopolymer well as a material absorbing moisture, for example, can be used to control other humidity. Is a material which can easily remove the moisture from the solid material and transport it to the atmosphere. Geopolymer the moisture absorption does not increase its volume. My work contains tables of weights placed in their samples in specific environments. Charts weight change during the study as well as a description and photos of the surface changes. I hope that my work will contribute to increased knowledge about to expand the knowledge of corrosion and its negative impact. It will also help to familiarize yourself with the material that is geopolymer and its properties in different environments.
