Opis:
Jerzy Adamczyk’s narrative was recorded in the middle of the last decade in the form of an audio file (currently in the author’s possession) at the request of his family. However, it has been edited to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the death of this witness to history, who was one of the members of Fighting Solidarity and the co-founder of its “Feniks” Independent Workers’ Publishing House. From Adamczyk’s recollections, we can learn a lot about how the introduction of martial law in Wrocław was viewed from the perspective of the socalled intellectual worker; about how great a challenge creating a free trade union from scratch in a non-productive establishment was; and, finally, about how those days were at times ridiculous and other times dramatic. The bitter reflections of Jerzy Adamczyk on the political and economic situation of Poland at the beginning of the twenty-first century appear as a summation of his narrative.

Opis:
Combat sports and martial arts are in the first group of ri sk for sport injuries due to the direct contact of the opponents. The aim of this study was to estimate the specificity and the frequency of injuries in some combat sports: boxing, judo, jujitsu, and karate. The group of respondents was composed of 220 ra ndomly selected sportsmen at the age of 11 to 49 (24,0 ± 7,75 years old on average), who have trained martial sports for at least 3 years. The cases of 202 respondents who admitted to be injured within last 3 years were further analysed. The study was base d on the survey designed by the authors. The study shows that 92% of the participants were injured. The most frequent were foot injuries (18,8%), arm injuries (15,4 %); most of the injuries were bruises (50,6%). Injuries of the upper limbs were more freque nt among boxers, whereas the lower limbs areas were more vulnerable to injuries among athletes training judo, jujitsu, and karate. Boxers reported to recover from injury faster (87,2%) then judokas (68,8%). Those practicing jujitsu were most likely to rene w their injuries (43,5%), and judokas happened to renew their injuries less regularly (32,8%). Boxers tended to use preventive treatments most frequently, and jujitsu athletes admitted to do it the least often. We found that the groups prone to injuries th e most were judokas and karate athletes; boxers were found to be the most resistant to injuries. There are specific injuries with the highest frequency in the area of the arm and foot experienced by boxing, judo, jujitsu and karate athletes. Respondents wh o did not use any medical treatment after the injury recovered fastest; injuries appeared to renew among sportsmen who underwent medical treatment earlier. Preventive treatment was reported by both athletes who experienced injuries and the respondents who were not injured at all.

The aim of the paper was to analyze: training effectiveness in the preparatory period, changes in contestants’ aerobic and anaerobic capacity in the preparatory period, changes in contestants’ motor abilities in the preparatory period, to compare the level of selected parameters of anaerobic capacity measured by means of Wingate test and aerobic capacity measured by means of Beep-test of kickboxing contestants with the results of contestants training similar martial arts. The research has been carried out on three contestants of UKS Gladiator Club who achieve high sports results. An analysis of obtained results shows that the training employed in the preparatory phase has been appropriately planned and effective enough. Both aerobic and anaerobic capacity in the preparatory phase has increased significantly. Anaerobic capacity of the examined contestants is higher than capacity of the contestants in the control group. Their aerobic capacity, on the other hand, is lower than in the control group. When planning further training in the future greater attention should be paid to developing aerobic capacity.

The purpose of training in ju-jitsu is developing characteristic adaptation to physical activity and optimizing body functions so as to obtain maximal achievements. A means to an end is mastering the fighting technique and develop the essential level of special physical fitness. The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of a modified circuit training conducted according to an original program on level of special physical fitness of ju-jitsu trainees. Ju-jitsu trainees having similar somatic parameters and training experience (3-5 years) were included in the research. 30 participants between the age of 21 and 28 have been selected by means of a purposeful selection. On the basis of different variants of a circuit training and governed by the guidelines of a functional training for trainees, we have developed a training programme which aims to develop special strength, stamina and speed skills. STATISTICA PL software was used to compile the results. In order to determine statistical significance of differences between pre- and posttest measurements in the evaluated group of Ju-Jitsu contestants, a t-test for related groups was used. In conclusion, the proposed training programme proceeds at a high level of intensity, which resembles start activity (which is indicated by the heart rate frequency measurement and lactic acid blood concentration) and may be used in ju-jistu training. The experimental training programme has exerted positive influence on the participants’ with respect to the number of movements made, which can affect their effectiveness in fight.

Introduction: Because of the fact that detailed data on the physiological characteristics of Pencak Silat are still limited. The primary purpose of this study to assess the physiological responses of Pencak Silat athletes and a secondary aim is to compare the physiological responses of Pencak Silat athletes with physiological responses of Taekwondo athletes. Material and Methods: This study has included 17 male junior martial art athletes (aged 15-16 years). This study requires all participants to completed one familiarization session and two experimental sessions. During the first session (laboratory condition), anthropometry was measured in the laboratory, and during the second session (on-court condition), the participants completed tests for anaerobic capacity (sprint test 60-m, vertical jump, push-ups, and sit-ups) and VO2max test. Results: The statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in anthropometry, vertical-jump, sit-ups, push-ups, and 60-m sprint results among TKD and PKS groups. Furthermore, the TKD group had significantly higher VO2max (p=0.015), when compared with the PKS group. Conclusion: The present investigation describes similar physiological characterizes, such as weight, height, BMI, BMR, body fat and also performances of vertical jump, situps, push-ups, and 60-m sprint tests among Taekwondo and Pencak Silat athletes. However, in comparison with junior Pencak Silat athletes, the junior Taekwondo athletes have better VO2max.

The objective of the paper is to reconstruct the genesis, ideological background, course as well as effects of the auction Against Martial Law in Poland – for Solidarity [Gegen das Kriegsrecht in Polen für Solidarność]. This auction of works of art by then contemporary German artists took place on 13 November 1982 at the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. On the basis of an analysis of hitherto unpublished archival materials and press reports, I argue that this auction – against the background of other West-German pro-Solidarity initiatives – might be distinguished by its excellent organisation, precisely defined goals and considerable financial and, last but not least, media success. Under the aegis of a West German public institution, it was possible to consolidate both Polish and German societal and art- circles, and contemporary art became an effective vehicle that helped increase German interest in the idea of Solidarity.

Opis:
In the study, we tried to point out, on the basis of comparison conclusions of several research works, how much the psycho-physiological aspects contribute to influencing the conception of sport preparation in terms of the philosophical context of preparation in traditional martial arts. We elucidated the perception of the difference between martial arts and combat sports and emphasized the psychological dimension of training in sports karate in relation to physical training. At the same time, we were looking for relationships that would give us an answer as to which of these aspects are more effective in terms of sports performance. In conclusion, on the basis of a comprehensive content analysis of the findings, we draw attention to the fact that only the mutual correlation of both selected aspects can achieve the desired results in the training of karate practitioners.
Próbowaliśmy zbliżyć się do postrzegania różnicy pomiędzy sztukami walki a sportami walki, podkreślając psychologiczny wymiar treningu w karate sportowym w stosunku do treningu fizycznego.

The article is an attempt to understand the trauma of martial law. Using the conceptual apparatus developed by Dominick LaCapra, two works of contemporary Polish literature – Wilczek by K. Ryrych and Wroniec by J. Dukaj – are analyzed. Although the thought of the American researcher focuses primarily on the traumatic content associated with World War II and the Holocaust, his theory also befits other difficult historical events. The author of the article seeks to revise the way in which the memory of martial law has been operationalized by the writers, and to look at their texts through the prism of their personal strategies for taming the trauma. The analyzed works show that martial law is not a „nobody’s experience”, that is, it is actually present-absent, affecting everyone and no one; on the contrary, it is an important problem of Polish society, but one that needs to be reframed and looked at in a new, perhaps also creative way.

„Talent is a form of wealth entrusted to us” – these words may serve as Witold Lutosławski’s motto. He repeated them often and at many occasions, emphasising that each creative artist is obliged to treat his talent carefully and develop it to produce great results for public consumption. This corresponds well with Biblical parable on talents but does it mean that Lutosławski was a religious man? Was Christian ethic important to him? In his music there is no much connection with religion – only his youthful Lacrimosa for soprano, choir and orchestra, and the arrangements of traditional Polish Christmas carols, composed shortly after the Second World War, present his direct relations to religious inspirations. However, he did not like to talk about his beliefs and worldview, especially in the context of his own music, which for him always was abstract and free from any extra-musical features. But his attitude to composing, as well as to the public activity, reveals many connections with Christianity values. He was brought up in the family of strongly catholic and patriotic beliefs, connected with high moral principles. An atmosphere of Lutosławskis’ family, which belonged to the intellectual elites of pre-war Poland, made strong influence on young Witold. For the rest of his life he felt obliged to pay his duties both as a composer and as a man of a high moral standards. He not only concentrated on his creative work (though it was his main life obligation) but searched for public weal in his social activity, always aiming „to behave decently”. This corresponds perfectly with Christian ethic and indeed in one of his interviews Lutosławski openly admitted that not only his worldview was formed by Catholicism, towards which he remained faithful, but also that in his opinion Christian ethic remains pre-eminent among all ethic systems formed by the humanity.

The paper presents the results of author's own research investigating the relationships between attachment styles and marital satisfaction among partners of individuals with a mobility disability. The analyses were intended to determine the strength of attachment behaviours (secure, avoidant and ambivalent [anxious-resistant insecure] attachment) and to identify the general level of relationship satisfaction and its specific aspects (intimacy, disappointment, self-fulfillment and similarity), as well as the correlation between the two variables. Also, the significance of variables such as the cause of spouse's disability and manner in which the disability has been perceived by the non-disabled spouse for the correlation was also verified. The research material was obtained from 85 spouses of individuals who became disabled as a result of a spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke and lower limb amputation. Measures used in the study included the Well-Matched Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2) developed by M. Plopa and J. Rostowski; Attachment Style Questionnaire (KSP) by M. Plopa; Permanent Disability/Chronic Disease and Accompanying Limitations Questionnaire by S. Byra, as well as author's own questionnaire.

The Pitch-In Culture

Łódź
Koszalin

martial low in Poland
artist run initiatives
Opis:
The term ‘Pitch-In Culture’ first showed up in Łódź, in the middle of 1984, during an artistic-social meeting. The text describes the problems and controversies associated with research on this phenomenon. Problematic issues refer to both the scope and the time frame within which it acted, and the list of the participants. The author states, that maybe with time it grew so much that it started to function independently of its primary source. He pays attention to achievements that apparently existed on the margin of Polish art, but when considered with regard to the perspective of the Pitch-In Culture, they can show the whole phenomenon in a new light. The text describes a few selected events, that took place in Koszalin or were undertaken as initiatives of artists from Koszalin in the eighties. The author points to a few important elements that in his opinion are characteristic of activities within the Pitch-In Culture. He points to the modernist intellectual heritage and the post-modern approach to problems within the art of that period. Following Janusz Zagrodzki, the author of the term ‘Private Art’, the author focuses the functioning of the Pitch-In Culture within the private and unofficial sphere and following Józef Robakowski he focuses on keeping an individual and independent attitude as an element that is essential for making art. The author further states, that in the way Pitch-In Culture or ‘Private Art’ functioned, there are four important elements: the personal relationships and contacts of the participants, the spaces – enclaves that allowed for the organisation of events and confront attitudes, activating and annexing the activities of people from outside of so-called art community, as well as self-publishing. According to the author, probably the greatest manifestation of the Pitch- In Culture and ‘Private Art’ was the Artist Pilgrimage organised in September 1983 in Łódź. As part of the Pilgrimage there were exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, actions, performances and theoretical appearances that were presented on an equal basis and always ended with long discussions. The Christmas call event entitled NO SLOGAN [BEZ HASŁA] organised in Koszalin between the 10th and 12th of February 1984 was an event in return for inviting the artists from Koszalin to the Pilgrimage that happened a year earlier. The organisers were the people who participated in the event in Łódź: Ewa Kowalska, Grażyna Bogusz- Wolska, Andrzej Ciesielski and Stanisław Wolski. They invited 85 artists from the whole country, plus there also came many artists who were not formally invited but associated with the Pitch-In Culture movement. The next initiative by artists from Koszalin was a cyclical event, organised between 1982 and 1988every year in mid-December, AFTER A YEAR organised by Andrzej Ciesielski and Andrzej Słowik. Artists from the whole of Poland presented their current art practice. For the Koszalin community open-air workshops were an important activity, that were in fact connected with the tradition of the Osieki workshops organised since 1963 and ended after the imposition of martial law in 1981. The situation was changed by a series of workshops organised under a name “We invite you to work” between 1987-1989 in Karlino and in 1990 in Darłowo. The initiators and first artistic curators were Andrzej Słowik and Maria Idziak who in 1989 entrusted the function to Wojciech Zamiara and in 1990 to Andrzej Ciesielski. Also important for the functioning of the Koszalin community within the Polandwide circuit was the Presbitery (Na Plebanii) Gallery run by an artist Andrzej Ciesielski and between 1986 and 1990 there were 35 meetings organised in it. As the author states, the Pitch-In Culture was born out of the need for a totally different way of presenting one’s own artistic practice, the exchange of information and joint action. Without friendship, knowing one another, a willingness to work and even without some personal antagonisms, the whole movement would not have had a chance to spread so broadly around the country and accept so many versatile artists as for example as it happened in Koszalin.

Background and Study Aim: The impact of ideas on teaching and training in martial arts has not been widely studied yet. Novum here is specially designed methodology – by expert’s judgements, not directly. On the ground of General Theory of Fighting Arts, the question is: How do i deological (philosophical, religious) conditions affect the process of training in different martial arts? The scope of research was limited to contemporary Europe and selected martial arts organizations (1980 -2015). Method: The first method used here is based on analysis of the content of the literature of the subject, or rather qualitative analysis of the discourse. Then the opinions and teaching of 5 highest rank masters of martial arts from France, Germany and Poland were taken into account (expert cour t method). It comes to this own, long -standing participant observation of the author. Results: There are 5 issues taken from the literature of the subject and 5 of their western applications, according to master -teachers’ teaching. They represent the classic canon of martial arts. The attitude to martial arts traditions varies from preference towards faithfulness to innovation. Disciples of Asian masters are more often in favour of the original version of the curriculum. Conclusions: Most of the ideological content of today's Asian martial arts comes from the philosophy of Taoism. In many cases the symbols and rules derive rather from the cultural traditions of the country of origin of the martial arts, rather than directly from certain religious or philosop hical systems. The attitude of widely perceived perfectionism is one of these universal values of martial arts, which is worth promoting regardless of world- view.

Opis:
Introduction: The fighting arts are an interesting area for researchers from many scientific disciplines around the world. Scientific investigations need to choose appropriate theory, language and methods. The first theory that gives us a special language is the Humanistic Theory of Martial Arts, HTMA. The second is the Anthropology of Martial Arts, AMA. The problem considered in this study is how we should study the martial arts & combat sports & systems, or ‘combatives’; what theoretical framework should we use. It is the author’s proposal for a scientific perspective which should be useful; an elaboration the Humanistic Theory of Martial Arts (HTMA) and definitions, the General Theory of Fighting Arts (GTFA), and the Anthropology of Martial Arts. Methodology: Participant observation, and qualitative content analysis of the literature were used. Methodology of research (in the area of the fighting arts) was also analyzed. Results and Discussion: General Theory of Fighting Arts – GTFA. In the GTFA we can study and explain a broad area of fighting arts and the related problems. These are: 1. Cultural areas of martial arts & combat sports & combat systems (according to AMA and HTMA); 2. Teaching concepts (technical and tactical issues), combat strategy (for self-defence and in combat sports), aspects of real fighting – interdisciplinary; 3. Bio-technical issues – from the perspective of sports sciences. The Research methodology for traditional East Asian martial arts requires its own practice and a high level of sophistication – at best, in more than one martial art. It is a qualitative method of participant observation associated with the experience of metaphysical dimensions. This special method is the ‘shugyo’ (Jap. shūgyō) – psychophysical study and experience from practicing psycho-physical systems. Michael Maliszewski was one of first researchers using this method. Conclusion: The GTFA is the sum of HTMA (humanistic, social and cultural issues), AMA (philosophical, cultural and biological approaches), and a part of Sport Sciences, for coaching, bio-technical and bio-medical issues, the methodology of teaching, etc. The GTFA now created should give us the opportunity to research and explain complicated problems of fighting arts, according to this new, holistic paradigm.

Opis:
Background. How does ‘the way of truth’ manifest itself and how does it relate to personal self-creation? What is the normative pattern? The author limits his discussion of this question to the three human figure roads – a knight, priest, and scientist. Method. The leading method applied is literature content analysis. Considerations are not limited to the selected concepts of Cassirer and Fromm, Kuczyński and Szmyd. The relations between the truth and good result here mainly in the deliberately accented personalistic approach. Results. The specifics of the three noble ways of truth are discussed. It was found that in each case a precondition for success (to achieve) is faithfulness to the truth. As an illustration, examples of specific people – warriors of truth – are presented. Conclusion. All creation and self-creation should be built on truth (the Truth) as a groundwork for the creation of good.

Opis:
Background. The broad humanistic and socio-cultural theoretical perspectives applied to this research effort provides a foundation for the Humanistic Theory of Martial Arts and the anthropological focus on martial arts used in this paper. Hence, conceptual language has been adopted for this investigation. The aim is to assess and identify the ethical values and pro-social perspectives accentuated by highranking masters in the martial art of jujutsu. Specifically, this paper seeks to answer the question of which values are most often prioritized or stressed? Method. The discussion involves the analysis of a broad survey of scientific and expert literature. Quoted and compared are the opinions and perspectives of 11 Grand Masters of jujutsu, holders of the highest titles and master's degrees (i.e, 9-10 dan), are analyzed and presented as evidence. Results. Classical schools and their representatives uniformly accentuate the value of tradition. On the other hand, there is a trend toward modernization both in the content of teaching and in technical ideas. This modernization began with Jigoro Kano, whose followers are today seen as reformers. All present Grand Masters pay attention to the ethical values and educational aspects of martial arts, particularly with regard to jujutsu. Conclusions. Ethics in jujutsu extends, as a kind of continuum between the traditionalist Butoku (i.e, knightly virtues resulting from Bushido) and the axiology of Christian Europe. A general consensus exists as to its educational and pro-social values. Aspects may also include self-control, self-discipline, perseverance, and responsibility, which are shaped by long-term educational processes.
