The article presents the methodology of calculation of principal parameters of ship’s hull dimensions, called „significant ships list”, at preliminary stage of design process. Knowledge collected in the database is related to new buildings classified according to type, displacement, or DWT, shipping class, maximum speed etc. Are analysed dimensional constraints due of Froude Number, ships dimensional coefficients block and weigh coefficient, relations of main dimensions such as L/B, B/T, L/H, B/H etc. [7]. Those parameters coming out from ship-owners requirements like type of ship, load capacity, type of cargo, shipping zone, speed and some more. Very helpful tool for such analysis is list of significant ships created for specified types of ships. Mentioned lists are very effective under conditions that cover broad-spectrum new buildings and data included are credible. Uncritical taking values included in significant ships list can lead to critical errors in selection of main dimensions of a ship or its propulsion powering. For that reasons, basing on analysis, as main criteria of similarity of ship’s hull were assumed mass coefficient, block coefficient and Froude Number [2]. That procedure has significant impact at proper estimation of propulsion power. Another reliable parameter of evaluation of power seems to be relation between power and load capacity Ne/D.

This article presents a possibility of using a cause-and-effect diagram, known as Ishikawa diagram, for an analysis of faults occurring in marine refrigeration systems. There has been presented a new procedure of the seating of a combustion engines at the marine power plant with steel chocks cemented by a thixotropic polymer composition between the engine's spot footing and the foundation ledge. A combustion engine is seated on foundation at the marine power plant by steel chocks or the chocks that are cast from polymer composition at the marine power plant. The arrangement, number and dimensions of foundation chocks, as well as arrangement, number and dimensions of the lateral and frontal stoppers that secure chocks work, are established by an engine manufacturer and are approved by Classification Society that supervises the vessel's construction and operation. The author's intention was to develop such chocks that combine the good resistance of steel chocks with the easiness of adjustment the bearing surfaces of polymer compositions chocks. Combination of these features was obtained for steel chocks which are glued by the relatively thin layers of polymer compositions between the engine spot footing and the foundation ledges. Such a method of making the chocks and seating with them the engines on foundation was claimed with the Patent RP No. 192120 on 24th July 2000 for the Polish Naval Academy. In order to receive the approval of the Polish Register of Shipping to use new chocks at the marine power plants, the author carried out appropriate research, results of which are presented below. The results obtained in the research show that by seating of a combustion engine with these steel-thixotropic polymer chocks at the marine power plant, the foundation bolts tension can be diminished to the value equal to five times of the engine weight.

TEU number, which is the container ships’ crucial designing factor, directly influences the main hull dimensions such as displacement V , length L, breadth B, draught T, their combinations and block coefficient CB. The main dimensions have a great impact on developing the ships resistant performance. Thus, it is really fundamental to establish the correct dimensions of the hull during the design and ship building process. Estimating the shape of the ship’s hull, that comprises its main dimensions, is one of the basic tasks as part of the preliminary design stage. The most significant decisions determining ships performance, its duration and building costs are made at the beginning of the preliminary stage, when the costs are relatively low. It is important to limit the total ship resistance, for instance, by lowering the wave ship resistance as much as possible, especially when the operational speed and TEU number carried by one vessel is increasing. That resistance depends on the operational speed expressed by Froude number. The resistance criteria and the existing hull dimensions limits, resulting from ships route, must be taken into consideration bearing in mind safety conditions such as ships stability and seaworthiness, when the main ships dimensions are being determined. In the paper are presented general rules for calculations of ship’s hull principle dimensions and total power of engines of container ship 1300TEU and 18 kn at preliminary stage of design process.

The work is contained results of investigations of undesirable events of operators of the during work on the seagoing vessels. These events were injuries at work of engine crew. I work have been placed results of diagnosis of candidate on operators of marine power plants also, before their half-year practices just floating. Results of diagnosing of operators show them unfairness predispositions.

Modernisation of the power plants of cargo fleet vessels to satisfy the requirements set out by the International Maritime Organisation is an urgent scientific and technical problem. The article presents the results of developing a solution to this problem that focuses on the exhaust gas system. We propose the use of ejection nozzles as part of this system. It was found that when the ejection coefficient in these nozzles is n = 3, it is possible to exclude the use of SCR reactors, thus reducing the operating costs of the marine power plant. Using a mathematical modelling method, the efficiency of operation of six types of nozzle as part of the exhaust gas system was investigated, and a constructive layout was proposed for the gas ducts and inlet louvres for supplying ambient air. To increase the efficiency of the proposed system, we consider several options for intensifying heat transfer processes through the use of dimple systems in the nozzles and nozzles with swirling flow. We found that these technical solutions would make it possible to further increase the efficiency of the systems by up to 19% abs.

The paper presents general rules of utilization of database, called „significant ships list,” for preliminary design of ship’s propulsion and configuration of power plant. Knowledge collected in the database is related to new buildings classified according to type, displacement, shipping class etc. It encompass general dimensions, characteristics of mobility ,propulsion’s power and type of main engines and propulsors, electric power plant, boilers and main mechanisms of a power plant. In the paper is presented method of utilization of the significant ships list during design of a container ship with capacity of 1300 TEU and speed of 18 knots. The first step of propulsion and main engine’s selection is determination of main dimensions, i.e. displacement, length, draft and breadth. That dimensions cannot be selected random way, due to hull’s mobility, stability and durability constraints. The list of significant ships consisted of 30 units, and amongst them, 17 were selected and analyzed. Others were rejected because of significant difference from mean values what could be due to different class of the ships.

The article presents the general description of the waste energy recovery systems in the marine Diesel power plants. Both, the simple as well as the complex recovery systems have been discussed. The substantial part of the article concerns the overview of the evaluation methods of the recovery systems arrangements. There have been presented the rudiments of the thermodynamic evaluation which in the effect provides the material for the determination of the energetic and exergetic efficiency of the recovery systems. The significant issue is also the description of the method of the arrangements economic evaluation, including the method of the determination of the annual profit ensuing from the operation of the waste energy recovery system and the dynamic methods of the economic analysis with the particular emphasis on the investment outlay payback period index. There have been presented the examples of the dependence of the waste heat turbo-generators on the main engine power output, the estimated payback times of the investment outlays incurred in connection with the discussed systems and the payback time of the outlays with reference to the main engine power output in the function of its power output.

Modernisation of marine power plants in the transport vessel fleet to satisfy the requirements of the International Maritime Organization is an urgent scientific and technical problem. Currently, the use of catalytic selective filters, dry and wet scrubber systems and exhaust gas recirculation for marine diesel engines is widely used for this purpose. An analysis of the use of ejection gas-air coolers is presented as an additional method of emission reduction. However, the use of such device does not neutralise the harmful emissions of power plant engines, but only increases the volume concentration of their exhaust gases. But this will help to increase the efficiency of dispersion of harmful emissions, by reducing the concentration of harmful emissions to values not exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations. Its efficiency depends on the load mode of the diesel engine. It is found that the initial concentration of harmful substances in combustion products due to their dilution with fresh air at 100% engine load is reduced by about 50%. The values of the reduction of the concentration and temperature of exhaust gases with the reduction of the engine load to 75% and 50% depending on the louvre angle are obtained. It is proved that ejection gas-air coolers can be an effective additional means for compliance with modern environmental parameters, especially when vessels are in special areas of the world’s oceans.

Greater interdependence and integration among the countries worldwide have resulted in the growth of the world trade and, what follows, marine transportation. In the last few years, despite the world economic stagnation, the number of ships has increased. An increase in the marine transportation means greater air pollution caused by ships, what is of paramount importance for the port cities. One of the efficient ways of limiting the negative impact of ships lying in ports on the environment is the power supply from the local electricity stations. This will allow for turning marine power generating systems off, what will result in the emission elimination in the ship’s mooring time along with the decrease of noise and vibrations. The infrastructure of the port electric installation necessary for the ships’ supply has to be designed so as to make the operating of different ship types possible. It is complicated as all over the world ships are equipped with different electric systems. The paper deals with general issues related to common nominal voltages and frequencies for vessels which call in European harbours and their estimated power demands. Additionally, a case study of a ferry vessel, currently undergoing retrofitting for shore connections, is presented and some particulars concerning technical solutions and environmental profits are described.

The paper presents comparative analysis of energetic possibilities of different ships with close parameters of displacement and operational ailing range, for selected type of main engine. Analysis is related to three types of ships, i.e. bulk carrier, tanker and container ship, with assumed displacement at level of 120 000DWT and typical for that ships sailing speed. The analysis concerns shipping route from Gdynia to Shanghai. First step of conducted analysis was based on elaboration of the list of contemporary similar ships for every class, their general dimensions, dimensional coefficients, and subsequently evaluation of hulls resistances using Holtrop – Mennen Method necessary for calculation of propulsive power, main engines’ selection, most convenient for every type of ship and calculation of trips durations and fuel consumptions. All calculations were done assuming typical cruising speed for considered types of ships, it means 25 knots for container ships and 15 knots for tankers and bulkers. Results of carried out calculations lets come to the conclusion that total time of trip duration of container ship is 1.5 times shorter and fuel consumption is 2.5 times higher comparing with tankers and bulk carriers going on the same trip. Taking under consideration constantly growing prices of heavy oil, that situation is inconvenient from economical point of view. Above facts explains general trend to reduce speed of container ships presented by almost all shipping companies. The way of speed’s reduction is decreasing of continuous power rate of main engine, what is related to necessity of blinding or dismounting some numbers of turbochargers. Hypothetic example of such operation and its impact at operational properties were analysed, and results showed, that exploitation parameters of the container ship begun closer to bulk carriers and tankers but could not achieve proper level of efficacy due to not optimal hull shape and engine characteristic.

The factor of thermal efficiency, used for the assessement of the use of heat in the diesel engine working cycles, has been based on the the first law of thermodynamics only. This paper indicates the fact that to achieve more comprehensive thermodynamic analyses it is necessary to use factors based on the two laws of thermodynamics. One such factor herein proposed is the exoergic efficiency. The method for the determination of this factor for the main engine is presented. Original relations involving the exoergic efficiency are set out. The factor depends on the ambient temperature.

The article considers the methodological aspects of the theoretical investigation of marine power plants with thermochemical fuel treatment. The results of the study of the complex influence of temperature, pressure, and the ratio of steam / base fuel on the thermochemical treatment efficiency are presented. The adequacy of the obtained regression dependences was confirmed by the physical modelling of thermochemical fuel treatment processes. For a gas turbine power complex with a thermochemical fuel treatment system, the characteristics of the power equipment were determined separately with further merging of the obtained results and a combination of material and energy flow models. Algorithms, which provide settings for the mathematical models of structural and functional blocks, the optimisation of thermochemical energy transformations, and verification of developed models according to the indicators of existing gas turbine engines, were created. The influence of mechanical energy consumption during the organisation of thermochemical processing of fuel on the efficiency of thermochemical recuperation is analysed.

The article presents a concept of a combined large-power ship propulsion system, composed of the leading internal combustion main engine associated with a power gas turbine and the steam turbine system, both utilising the energy taken from the main engine exhaust gas. In the examined variant the power turbine, arranged in parallel with a turbocharger, is fed with the exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold. A calculation algorithm is presented, along with sample calculations for particular subsystems: supercharging, gas power turbine, and steam turbine system. Assumptions were formulated for the calculations, and were complemented by the adopted limits. Selected system parameters were confronted with the experimental investigations available in the literature. The performed power optimisation of the entire combined marine power plant took only into account the thermodynamic point of view, leaving aside technical and economic aspects. The numerical calculations were performed for the 52 MW low-speed marine diesel engine.
