The article presents the verification of the commonly used analytical method of determining the safety waterways parameters. The verification is conducted by means of the method based on the real time experiment using the landborne laser range finder. The analysis concerns the inland passenger crafts navigating on the straight waterway lying under the Długi Bridge in Szczecin.

The article discusses the problem of determining the characteristics of heat release based on experimental indicator diagram for diagnostic purposes. The importance of the operational diagnosis of marine engines is the analysis of indicator diagrams was identified. In addition to analysing changes in the values of indicated, should be aimed to oriented broader analysis, including the determination on the basis of experimental indicator diagram of heat release characteristics during the combustion process. Then it is essential to choose the right model of heat release for reciprocating piston engines with direct fuel injection. In the diagnostics of piston engines, including marine engines, special interest arouses use single-zone model based on indicator diagrams as a source of information. Based on the results their own research we analysed the impact on the characteristics of heat release of simplifying assumptions in the model of heat release, including constant value adiabatic exponent. In the temperature, range 300÷2800 K waveformsκ are considered to be linearly dependent on the temperature. Based on the above, for the gas temperature from 800 K to 1850 K value of the exponent κ decreases about 3%. The effect of the value κ on the course of characteristics q and Q, to the typical marine engines was shown.

The article analyses the possibility of using the electronic type indicators, in the diagnosis of marine engines. The analysis of indicated parameters read from the indicator diagram is now widely use on ships in the diagnosis of marine engines. To make this possible, measuring indicated systems should meet a number of important requirements to be met to ensure the possibility of their diagnostic use. These include reliable determination of the top dead centre piston (TDC). The above is particularly important in in-depth analysis of indicator diagrams − calculating the heat release characteristics. The paper presents results of research on the effect of the error on the accuracy of the location of TDC (GMP) on calculated heat release characteristics. In order to demonstrate the impact positional error TDC, simulation study was conducted in which indicated diagrams was used, obtained on a medium-speed four-stroke marine engine type A25/30 and the low-speed two-stroke engine type RTA76, Sulzer Company.

The paper presents a method of identification parameters of shaft line alignment and its influence on operational reliability of marine propulsion system. The discussion about shaft line parameters (bearings' reactions, bending moment and shear forces acting on crankshaft or gear box, and stresses distribution in the shaft line) which has an influence on marine propulsion system reliability was presented. Proper shaft line alignment is often a problem for repair shipyards, for aged ships without sufficient documentation. Some data can be draw by measurements; e.g. shaft line dimensions or intermediate bearings' reactions. Other data (stern tube bearing load, real axis of shaft line) have to be determined on the base of calculations. Author proposed combined experimental-analytical method for identified and optimization (correction) some existing parameters and checking power transmission system’s foundation. Specialised software (based on Finite Element Method) has been developed for shaft line alignment calculations. Main novelties of the software are elastic supports (model of bearings – boundary conditions) of the shaft line, continuous support as a model of stern tube bearing and influence coefficients calculations. An example analysis with discussion has been performed for cargo ships with medium-speed main engine. Multi-variant computations supported by measurements of the ships’ shaft line have been carried out. Changes in shaft line alignment have been proposed in order to increase reliability of propulsion system.

One of the greatest problems of modern production techniques is the achievement of an appropriate quality at minimal costs and accompanied by the production efficiency increase. Therefore, while designing the production process, the technology used should have a considerable influence on the durability and reliability of machine parts to be produced. During finish treatment, the final dimensions as well as functional properties are imparted to a given element by application of proper treatment type. The engineer has a range of production techniques to choose for the proper surface layer formation. It is crucial to find a suitable solution which will meet the requirements as well as the work conditions of a given machine part. The article presents the research results of pump shaft pins finish turning. The research was performed on a roller 60 mm in diameter made of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The finish tooling of pump shaft pins was carry out on a universal CDS 6250 BX-1000 centre lathe. The finish lathing process was carried out by means of Sandvik Coromant cutting tool with replaceable inserts. In the research of lathing process used standard inserts (MF), inserts with increased tolerance (UM) and inserts with Wiper technology (WF). During lathing, the optimal machining parameters were used. The cutting process was performed at entering angle of 90°. The process of lathing used cutting tool dynamometer DKM 2010. During the research, the effect of cutting insert geometric and optimal cutting parameters on the surface roughness of steel applied to marine pumps shaft pins was determined.

The article presents a method for evaluating the technical condition of selected structural elements of the reciprocating internal combustion engine driving a synchronous generator. Th results of measurements of the electric generator parameters are the diagnostic information source. On this basis it is possible to determine the instantaneous angular speed marine engine crankshaft which, in turn, is the basis for reasoning about the correctness of the process of fuel combustion in the engine cylinders, and efficiency of the speed controller. By that means one can define the technical condition of the fuel equipment, sealing the piston-rings-cylinder system, and the correctness of the process of the working medium exchange in the engine cylinders.
W artykule przedstawiono metodę oceny stanu technicznego wytypowanych elementów struktury konstrukcyjnej pomocniczego tłokowego silnika spalinowego napędzającego prądnicę synchroniczną. Źródłem informacji diagnostycznej są wyniki pomiarów parametrów elektrycznych prądnicy. Na ich podstawie możliwe jest określenie chwilowych prędkości kątowych wału korbowego silnika okrętowego, co stanowi podstawę do wnioskowania o prawidłowości przebiegu procesu spalania paliwa w cylindrach silnika oraz o oprawności pracy regulatora prędkości obrotowej. Pozwala to na określenie stanu technicznego aparatury paliwowej, szczelności zespołu tłok-pierścienie-cylinder oraz poprawności przebiegu procesu wymiany czynnika roboczego w cylindrach silnika.

Marine engines are very complex technical objects, having many important functional systems, which include, inter alia, injection system, characterized by high unreliability. In this system, there may be different types of defects (damage) that affect the engine parameters, including specific fuel consumption, as well as failures endanger the safety of the ship. The indicator diagrams and analysis of indicated parameters have limited utility in the diagnosis of damages of marine engine, although this is a method commonly used in operational practice. To achieve greater diagnostic effectiveness, when, based on indicator diagrams, are calculated and then the characteristics of heat release is analysed - net of heat release characteristics and the intensity of the heat release, it was demonstrated. This procedure is particularly effective in the diagnosis of damages of marine diesel engine injection system components. It has been shown that the characteristics of heat release contain information about the condition of the injection systems, which enable to diagnose their failures. This is shown on the example of a clogged nozzle holes (their carbonizations). The obtained results allowed selecting the diagnosis symptoms, useful in detecting these faults in the injection system, from the characteristics of heat release: net heat release (Q) and intensity of heat release (q). The object of the research was typical marine medium speed engine Sulzer A25/30.

Opis:
The paper presents the development of a new simulation method to optimize bends in marine waterways. This method, using results of empirical research and simulation methods, would allow accurate determination of safe manoeuvring areas. The method was used at the stage of detailed design of parameters of the, which is undergoing modernization, to determine the optimum parameters of horizontal curves of the fairway. The study was conducted on the type of manoeuvring simulator called Polaris Kongsberg and attended by pilots from the Szczecin–Swinoujscie Pilot Station. Based on the studies carried out, the maximum safe ship length was determined for the redesigned waterway and the conditions for their safe operation. The maximum lengths of these ships are as follows: cruise Lc = 260 m, container Lc = 240 m and a bulk carrier Lc = 220 m.

In 2001 the European Space Agency ESA will launch the earth observation satellite ENVISAT. It will carry several instruments that provide new opportunities to measure oceanographic variabIes. These are the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR), the Radar Altimeter (RA), the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) and the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR). Together, they rep-resent the main measurement techniques of satellite oceanography, and complement each other perfectly. These instruments are to be used in synergy to: ź improve the analysis of measured wind and ocean wave fields, and thereby improve weather forecasting at weather centers; ź determine the extent and variables of sea ice and develop a five-day sea ice prediction model, to support maritime shipping and offshore activities; ź monitor map sediment and suspended matter transport in coastal regions, especially in areas with large river estuaries, which greatly affects shipping lanes, harbours, and dredging activities; ź monitor hydrobiological and bio-geochemical variables related to water quality in coastal regions and large inland waters, which affects ecology, coastal development, aquaculture, drinking water supplies, and tourism. To prepare the oceanographic community to make best use of the ENVISAT sensors in the pre-Iaunch phase, existing algorithms to derive marine parameters are used and validated using data from the ERS SAR, the ERS RA, Sea WiFS, and IRS MOS sensors now in operation. Derived products, which include wind field, sea state, sea level, sea surface temperature and concentrations of water constituents, are used to address problems that can be tackled best using the synergy of radar and optical data, such as the effect of surface slicks on radar wind measurements, sea state on ocean color, wind and waves on the resuspension of suspended matter, and wind and waves on sea ice variabIes.

The article presents the results of a numerical simulation of the working process carried out in a diesel engine. In the applied utility program DIESEL-RK, the laboratory engine Farymann Diesel type D10 was implemented. A selected inoperability of its functional fuel supply system - reduced opening pressure of the injector pinj - was introduced. The values of adequate diagnostic parameters were determined: working gas temperature in the cylinder Tcyl, exhaust gas temperature Texh, combustion (flame) temperature Tcomb and concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas NOx. Experimental tests were carried out on the experimental engine with the inoperative condition actually introduced, analogous to the numerical simulation, and the diagnostic parameters Texh and NOx were recorded. The results obtained by numerical simulation of the processes and during the active experiment on the experimental engine were compared.

Modernisation of marine power plants in the transport vessel fleet to satisfy the requirements of the International Maritime Organization is an urgent scientific and technical problem. Currently, the use of catalytic selective filters, dry and wet scrubber systems and exhaust gas recirculation for marine diesel engines is widely used for this purpose. An analysis of the use of ejection gas-air coolers is presented as an additional method of emission reduction. However, the use of such device does not neutralise the harmful emissions of power plant engines, but only increases the volume concentration of their exhaust gases. But this will help to increase the efficiency of dispersion of harmful emissions, by reducing the concentration of harmful emissions to values not exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations. Its efficiency depends on the load mode of the diesel engine. It is found that the initial concentration of harmful substances in combustion products due to their dilution with fresh air at 100% engine load is reduced by about 50%. The values of the reduction of the concentration and temperature of exhaust gases with the reduction of the engine load to 75% and 50% depending on the louvre angle are obtained. It is proved that ejection gas-air coolers can be an effective additional means for compliance with modern environmental parameters, especially when vessels are in special areas of the world’s oceans.

Therefore, an electronic database was drawn up about the most important ship producer’s piston internal-combustion engines for needs of exploitation investigations in the destination of gathering the necessary information. This paper presents a database of global marine diesel engines. For example, engines of the following companies were described: Akasaka Diesel, CAT, Cummins, Fiat, Hyundai, MTU, Niigata Power Systems, Pielstick, Scania, Volvo Penta etc. Information was obtained from various sources, so as websites of producers, advertising catalogues, or books and magazines about subject matter associated with marine diesel engines. This information was collected and written with the help of the program Microsoft Office. The base enables supplementing and the alteration of entered data. Produced engines are usually operated by several dozen years after producing on swimming objects. Produced internal combustion engines are usually operated by several dozen years after producing on floating objects, and producers are merging or are stopping existing.
