Opis:
Wood is one of the oldest construction materials. Nowadays, in the shipbuilding industry wood is almost forgotten. Wood has a lot of advantages in comparison to other materials, e.g. steel. However, some of wood characteristics are inconvenient. Layers are integrated part of wood construction - it is a natural composite. It is a big advantage of the wood, but there is too big difference between soft and hard wood's layer. Modified wood might be very interesting “new” material for marine industry. Especially, polymer-wood composite seems to be very promising. One of the authors developed surface saturation methodology of the wood by polymer. Several measurement tests were performed. Some of the new material characteristics have been specify as a results of the tests. Stiffness and averaged material constants have been determined as well as material data of separate composite layers. The experiments were simulated by numerical calculations. Numerical analysis was compared with measurements. After model verification, several other analyses (e.g. detailed stress distribution in the composite) were performed. That kind of analysis of material data where very difficult, or even impossible, for obtain by measurements. Numerical analysis was performed by Patran-Nastran commercial software based on Finite Element Method. The authors plan to use experimental and calculations data for more specified analysis (included dynamic analysis) and plan to improve that polymer-wood composite can be used in marine industry with benefits.

Opis:
W artykule poruszono temat narastającego od lat zanieczyszczenia środowiska morskiego odpadami tworzyw sztucznych, omówiono działania różnych organów regulacyjnych, od konwencji ochrony mórz (Helcom, Ospar i in.) poprzez aktywność agend Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych (UNEP UNEA), po działania Unii Europejskiej. Szczegółowej analizie poddano ustawodawstwo europejskie skierowane na uregulowanie stosowania niektórych wyrobów z tworzyw sztucznych i na zdefiniowanie nowej roli tych tworzyw w ramach Gospodarki o Obiegu Zamkniętym („Strategia na rzecz tworzyw sztucznych”).
The paper covers regulatory issues of plastics triggered by the growing pollution of marine environment by plastics. In the European Union plastics have earned a special attention as one of the five critical areas of Circular Economy legislative package. The European legislative initiatives on plastics including Strategy on Plastics and Single Use Plastics Directive are described in more detail. This global problem starts to be also treated globally, e.g. by regulatory activity of sea conventions (Helcom, Ospar a.o.), UN agencies (UNEP, UNEA).

Opis:
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) estimates that 10 million shipments of radio-active materials are transported annually. Each shipment is made up of either a single package or a number of packages transported from one location to another. The vast majority of these shipments, some 95%, relate to non-fuel cycle transports such as the transport of smoke detectors, and cobalt sources for medical purposes. Only 5% relate to nuclear fuel cycle transports. This study investigates the safety stability aspect, harmonized regulation based transportation, sustaining shipment aspect for the transportation of radioactive materials by ships. Consequently the originality of this paper appears the alignment of existing maritime rules and regulations with the IAEA regulations in order to provide easy understanding and usage for the establishment of code of safe and secure practices for seafarers with the countermeasures and harmonized regulations that are practically implemented by the navigation officers and Master.

Opis:
Studies on Baltic nodules have been undertaken since the1920s. In the 1970sand 1980s, the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute conducted researches on the bottom sediments of the Baltic Sea, which allowed identifying the regions of occurrence of Fe-Mn nodules in the southern part of the Baltic Sea (Mojski, 1989-1994). Nodules from the Polish Baltic Sea Zone are the least studied element of the marine environment. So far, there is a lack of information on environmental-geological conditions of formation and occurrence of nodules, their metal resources and deposit potential. The Fe-Mn nodules may be a valuable source of information on the contamination of the Baltic Sea water and bottom sediments. In cooperation between the Institute of Oceanography of the University ofGdañsk and the Polish Geological Institute-NRI, two research cruises were carried out in August and September 2020 on a 5 X 5 km testing ground in the Gotland-Gdańsk Threshold region. The seabed surface was profiled using multibeam echo sounders and a side-scan sonar. A hundred samples of Fe-Mn nodules, 25 samples of surface sediments associated with the nodules, and25 samples of clay rocks underlain by marine sediments were collected. The extensive documentary material will enable, for the first time, to estimate the nodule resources and determine the regularity of their occurrence.

Opis:
John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. is mandated to offer aquatic-sports courses such as paddling, rowing, sailing, and swimming to equip students with needed skills essential for survival in case of emergencies. Since, there is a dearth of instructional materials in Physical Education 2 (Advanced Swimming and Life-saving Techniques), the JBLFMU-Arevalo was given a research grant by the CHED (Commission on Higher Education) known as DARE TO (Discovery Applied Research and Extension Trans/Inter-Disciplinary Opportunities) to address the problem. This DARE TO grant aimed to develop instructional materials in PE 2 that will enhance the swimming performance and life-saving techniques of students. That is why the researchers would like to test for the effectiveness of this instructional material in the form of modules over the traditional approach which is lecture in improving the students’ swimming performance and life-saving techniques in terms of their knowledge and skills. This non-equivalent control group under quasi-experimental study was utilized among the BSMT (Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation) students. A pretest was used to determine swimming performance of the experimental and control groups. An intervention through the use of instructional materials was employed in the experimental group for the whole semester (five months) while the control group was exposed to lecture as a traditional method of instruction. After a semester, the posttest was administered. The statistical tools used were mean, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon-signed ranks test. The findings of the study revealed that the instructional material is effective in enhancing the swimming performance and life-saving techniques of students both in the aspects of knowledge and skills. Both the experimental and control groups were “Fair” in their knowledge pretest scores but during the posttest, the experimental group was “Good” and the control group was “Fair”. On the other hand, both the experimental and control groups were “Fair” in their skills’ pretest scores but during their posttest, the control group was “Good” while the experimental group was “Excellent”. The experimental group who used the module showed significantly better performance during the posttest both for knowledge and skills compared to the control group who did not use the module (lecture only). The study further showed significant differences in the mean gains between the experimental and control groups after the conduct of pretest and posttest in favor of the experimental group. It can be gleaned from the results that the module can enhance the knowledge and skills in swimming performance and life-saving techniques of the experimental group. It is highly recommended that this module be utilized among maritime schools offering swimming and life-saving courses.
