Opis:
Interaction between continental and marine end-members gives rise to the natural biogeochemical processes in Sharm Al-Kharrar, a lagoon in the arid Red Sea region. Twenty-nine surface sediment samples were collected from the area and their mud fraction analysed for grain size, OC, CaCO3, mineralogy and elemental composition. The mud fraction consisted of a mixture of siliciclastic/calcareous materials, dominated by silt size materials and characterised by low OC (average 0.71% ±0.13); CaCO3 varied widely, with an average of 45% ±18. Concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, V and Ba showed a wide range of variation throughout the Sharm. The results were normalised to Al and subjected to cluster analysis in order to examine the relations between the mineralogy and the elemental composition. The contents of Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, V and Ba appeared to be influenced by the mixing of the two end-members in addition to the physiochemical processes associated with the mixing between episodic freshwater flooding and seawater. Zn was the single element that showed a slight departure from the mixing model.

Opis:
The marine environment is estimated to be one of the most significant sources of biological activity in the world. In the last few decades an increase in the research intensity conducted on marine microorganisms has been observed, which confirms the great potential of these organisms in the field of bioactive compounds' production. In order to efficiently use the natural resources of the marine environment, metagenomics can be applied. This powerful technique allows for efficient screening of microbial biodiversity for bioactive compounds. The primary aim of this review is to present some aspects of the construction of metagenomic libraries, and strategies of screening for novel bioactives in the marine surrounding. This paper also illustrates several examples of the application of metagenomic methods in the discovery of novel enzymes and drugs in various marine environments.

Opis:
A biological valuation system to assess the value associated with ecosystem stability and richness (and not that from the point of view of users) is proposed to provide scientific decision support for marine protected areas and marine spatial planning. The system is based on the assessment of individual species and habitat/species assemblages. An extensive set of recently collected (2007–08) and archival (1970 –2000) data on the occurrence of marine benthos was analysed for the PolishMarine Areas. Based on matching data sets of sediments, the euphotic zone, temperature and salinity, as well as fetch and sea current values, a GIS model was used to visualise the results; a map indicates the two areas which are considered to be biologically the most valuable (Puck Bay and the stony shallows of the central coast).
