    Opis:
    New or so far poorly known neoselachians from the Cenomanian and Turonian of SW France are described. The material studied herein comes from nine localities in the Charentes region, comprising palaeoenvironments ranging from coastal to open marine environments, and consists of two orectolobiforms, six lamniforms, and four rajiforms. The new taxa are Squalicorax coquandi sp. nov. and Roulletia bureaui gen. et sp. nov. within lamniforms, and Hamrabatis bernardezi sp. nov., Archingeayia sistaci gen. et sp. nov., and Engolismaia couillardi gen. et sp. nov. within rajiforms. New specimens of Odontaspis rochebrunei Sauvage, 1880 from the type area allow redescription of this taxon, assigned herein to the genus Cenocarcharias. Occurrences of Squalicorax baharijensis, S. cf. intermedius, and Archaeolamna sp., previously unrecorded from this region, and Almascyllium, a genus generally described from younger strata, are also noted, and improve knowledge of mid−Cretaceous selachian faunas from Western Europe.

    Ischnacanthiform acanthodian dentigerous jaw bones from the Lower Devonian (Late Lochkovian) of Podolia are described for the first time. One new genus and one new species are established. Podoliacanthus gen. nov. is diagnosed as having small−sized jaw bones, the presence of specific accessory cusps/denticles on the medial side of teeth of the lateral tooth row, and groups of denticles forming the lingual tooth row. Podoliacanthus zychisp. nov. is distinguished in having elongated slender jaw bones and lateral teeth with one medial side denticle. Besides, three species are described in open nomenclature: Podoliacanthus sp. 1, while similar to Podoliacanthus zychi sp. nov., differs in having stronger posterior inclination of the teeth tips and presence of well developed flanges of the teeth, P. sp. 2 has quite robust jaw bones and teeth with two medial side denticles, and Podoliacanthus sp. 3 has small narrow jaw bones and teeth with three medial side denticles. Morphology of the lingual tooth row is considered to be a diagnostic feature of generic and higher taxonomic levels, while accessory medial cusps/denticles of the teeth are regarded as diagnostic features at species level. The new genus also occurs in Upper Silurian or Lower Devonian deposits of North Greenland. Preservation of the jaw bones possibly depends on their secondary mineralization.

    Opis:
    Hettangian to Pliensbachian neoselachian tooth assemblages from marine deposits in northwest Europe are dominated by palaeospinacids. In the Toarcian, elasmobranch faunas tend to be more diverse and several other neoselachian groups have their first occurrence. A small, but surprisingly diverse, neoselachian tooth assemblage, comprising seven taxa, has been extracted from Pliensbachian sediments within the Rya Formation in southern Sweden. The fauna includes five synechodontiform species; Synechodus occultidens, S. enniskilleni, 'Synechodus' sp., Paraorthacodus sp., and Sphenodus sp. The remaining two species include Hexanchidae indet. and Agaleus dorsetensis. The exclusively Early Jurassic A. dorsetensis is separated from all other neoselachians on the basis of tooth morphology and is here included in the new, monotypic family Agaleidae nov. The assemblage from the Rya Formation is the first selachian fauna to be recorded from the Jurassic of Sweden and it has a composition quite different from contemporary faunas found in other areas of Europe. The neoselachian part of the fauna is more diverse while hybodont sharks are represented solely by a single species.
    W pracy omówiono zespoły zębów wczesnojurajskich nowożarłaczy (Neoselachii) z Europy Północnej. W zespołach z osadów morskich najwcześniejszych pięter wczesnej jury (hetang-pliensbach) przeważają paleospinacydy, jednak różnorodność gatunkowa jest niska. W toarku, fauny spodoustych różnicują się bardziej, w tym po raz pierwszy pojawiają się rodziny rekinów rogatych (różnozębnych; Heterodontidae), Brachaeluridae i rochowatych (Rhinobatidae). Z osadów pliensbachu formacji Rya w południowej Szwecji pochodzi mały, lecz zaskakująco zróżnicowany zespół zebów nowożarłaczy, liczący siedem gatunków. Fauna ta obejmuje pięć gatunków synechodontokształtnych: Synechodus occultidens, S. enniskilleni, 'Synechodus' sp., Paraorthacodus sp. and Sphenodus sp. Pozostałe dwie formy to Agaleus dorsetensis i bliżej nieoznaczony przedstawiciel sześcioszparowatych (Hexanchidae). Wyłącznie wczesnojurajski A. dorsetensis różni się od wszystkich pozostałych nowożałaczy morfologią zębów, toteż został zaliczony do nowej, jednogatunkowej rodziny Agaleidae. Do cech odróżniających Agaleidae od innych nowożarłaczy należą: poziomy grzbiecik u podstawy korony zęba oraz wysoki korzeń z centralnym zgrubieniem od strony wargowej. Zespół z formacji Rya jest pierwszą fauną rekinów z jury Szwecji i różni się składem gatunkowym od ówczesnych zespołów z innych regionów Europy. Nowożarłacze z formacji Rya są bardziej różnorodne gatunkowo, zaś hybodonty reprezentuje pojedynczy gatunek Hybodus reticulatus. Synemurskie fauny z Anglii i Belgii zawierają natomiast kilka gatunków hybodontów zaliczanych do dwóch rodzajów: Hybodus i Acrodus, a tylko trzy gatunki nowożarłaczy. Acrodus wymarł zapewne przed pliensbachem i nie występuje w żadnej ze znanych faun tego wieku. Zespół synechodontokształtnych z formacji Rya jest najbogatszy z dotąd opisanych. Synechodontokształtne mogły przeżyć rozkwit we wczesnej jurze, gdyż prawie nie było wówczas innych nowożarłaczy.

    Opis:
    Considering the fossil record, foraminifers constitute one of the most ubiquitous groups in marine deposits due to a high preservation potential of tests. Moreover, borings appear to be widely distributed in the tests. Findings of the borings have potential usefulness as palaeoecological markers and can be significant for taphonomical studies of foraminifers. Formal naming of the borings is needed to further their usefulness, and therefore a new ichnotaxon Curvichnus semorbis igen. et isp. nov. is erected.

    Mass occurrence of mats comprised of benthic coccoid cyanobacteria is reported from early Silurian black radiolarian cherts exposed at Żdanow village (Bardzkie Mountains, Sudetes, southwestern Poland). The cherts contain laminated organic matter representing degraded benthic coccoid cyanobacterial mats. The remains of cyanobacteria occur as laminated agglomerations of variously preserved subglobular colonies composed of spherical cells of variable size and numbers. The morphology of remnants of cells and their mucilaginous envelopes, structure of colonies, and particularly the presence of small granular structures resembling reproductive cells known in extant coccoid cyanobacteria as baeocytes, permit to compare the Silurian microbiota with modern cyanobacteria assigned to the genera Stanieria or Chroococcidiopsis.

    Among composite trace fossils, one of the most common structures throughout the Phanerozoic are structures (e.g., dwelling trace, feeding trace) reworked by Chondrites and/or Phycosiphon. However, differences in the nature of the reworking behaviors of these two ichnogenera remain unknown. Thus, in this study, composite Phymatoderma specimens from the Neogene deep-marine Shiramazu Formation in Japan, particularly those reworked by Chondrites and Phycosiphon, were analyzed to reveal the specific conditions that might control the activities of these trace-makers. Phymatoderma reworked by Phycosiphon is significantly larger than non-reworked Phymatoderma, whereas Phymatoderma reworked by Chondrites shows no significant difference in burrow diameter compared with non-reworked Phymatoderma. The recognized size selectivity (i.e., preference for larger burrows) by the Phycosiphon trace-maker can be explained by considering the different feeding strategies of these two ichnogenera; namely deposit-feeding Phycosiphon-makers, which must have processed a significant mass of sediment to obtain sufficient organic matter, whereas chemosymbiotic Chondrites-producers did not require a lot of sediment to obtain nutrients. In order to test these interpretations, a dataset of Phanerozoic trace fossils reworked by Chondrites/Phycosiphon were compiled. Consequently, the Phycosiphon-pro-ducers' preference toward relatively larger burrows was recognized, quantitatively supporting the results of this study. The compilation also indicates that the burrow size might have become one of the important limiting factors for the Phycosiphon-producers that tried to rework the sediments within previous subsurface burrows, at least for 80 million years.
