Opis:
The events of March 1968 in Poland have been widely studied from the point of view of political and social history. Recently, it has also become the subject of cultural studies. Yet, the research in the area of the visual arts has been neglected. In the text on the performance art in Poland around 1968 I pay special attention to the connection of art and political tensions of the era with the odNOWA Gallery in Poznań as a case study. The gallery was closed down after the happening by Andrzej Matuszewski entitled Proceeding on May 1969 and the event marked the break of the artists community with the cultural policy of the socialist state. It was too early to call their position ‘dissident’. Yet, I propose a notion of ‘distrust’, taken from Stanisław Barańczak’s writings, to define the peculiar stand of the avant-garde artists in Poland by the end of the 1960s that eventually led to dissidence in the 1980s.

Opis:
The annual, nationwide “Independence March” taking place on the anniversary of Poland regaining independence has become a phenomenon and the only event of its kind at that time. It brings together – in the physical sense – thousands of Poles. However, it is even more engaging in symbolic terms. The research aimed to analyze the Independence March as a heterotopic space according to Michel Foucault and, more precisely, to refer to four of the six principles of heterotopia proposed by the French philosopher. The first two principles apply to society in general and, therefore, were not analyzed in relation to the event of the Independence March. The remaining four were successfully used to reflect on it more deeply. Research has shown that the “Independence March” is an example of heterotopia, and what distinguishes it from other previously studied spaces with heterotopic features is the simultaneous variability and spatial stability, the range of influence, the multitude of ways of entering its space and the significant function it performs because of its complexity.

Opis:
The article discusses the subject of celebrating International Women’s Day in the Polish People’s Republic (1952-1989). The author aims at showing the importance of this day in the public space – specifically in state enterprises. The article mainly attempts to assess whether those celebrations were inspired by the communist authorities and used to achieve some short- and long-term social goals, or if they allowed to establish or re-establish some kind of trust for the party in power. Empirical data are used to illustrate the phenomenon. The author points out that in the period of the Polish People’s Republic, there existed a certain privilege of being a women. This was evidenced by the prestige that the authorities of the time assigned to the celebration of Women’s Day and the fact that Men’s Day was not celebrated, or at least was much more marginal.

literary magazine “March”
Opis:
The Belarusian emigration magazine “March” was published in 1947–1948 in Germany. The main editor was a well-known Belarusian literary critic and writer Anton Adamowicz. Although only three issues were published, the role of this magazine was crucial. It continued the tradition of the Belarusian literary magazines published in Belarus during the 20s and the 30s of the 20th century. A. Adamowicz was engaged in cooperation with many talented writers and critics. Also, he published a lot of his own material: short stories and critical texts. The problems posed in these texts were connected not only with the past history of Belarus, but also with its current situation at the time. The magazine became a springboard to introduce various views about the development of Belarusian literature and culture in exile.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to analyze the latest reportage by Agata Tuszyńska entitled Personal luggage. After March [2018]. The author deals with the shared experience of the generation of young Jews, the children of those who survived the Holocaust, living in the Polish People’s Republic. The category of post-memory, defined in 1997 by Marianne Hirsch, is assigned to this experience reported in the text. The interpretation of the protagonists’ statements, however, demonstrates that it does not work in their case. Their memories are of a genuine generational character, but they consist of a variety of individual memories, in which the Holocaust is on the margin of experience.

Opis:
The natsukashisa (nostalgia) is a common key to interpretation of novels written by the Japanese author Yoshimoto Banana. Considered as the desire for a replay of life, nostalgia is evaluated as a solution for the sensation of emptiness and solitude attributed to modern life; a gap that can be bridged by memory, recollection and flash-backs of the protagonists in Yoshimoto’s novels. As a representation for something gone, the objects of this nostalgic feeling assume different forms in Yoshimoto’s works: a faraway house, a lost person, a feeling perceived and then missed; dreams, hallucinations, images and paintings: everything is transformed by the author in a vehicle to allow the reader to sympathize with the protagonists and share the same nostalgic feeling. Author’s attempt is to encourage the young readers to keep on seeking the lost self in the past in order to not betray one’s identity. This is the main topic one can also recognise in her novel called Sweet Hereafter, a publication in which nostalgia for a self lost in a car accident is compared to the one felt by the hisaisha of Tōhoku region who lost everything after the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11th March 2011. Here Yoshimoto suggests natsukashisa as the possible way to overcome the traumatic experience of witnessing Japanese Daishinsai. This brief investigation proposes a literary case study that highlights the relation between trauma and memory, with a particular focus on nostalgia considered as a positive means for overcoming traumatic experience.

The author of the article attempts to recreate the famous staging of Dziady directed by Kazimierz Dejmek, in order to demystify the spectacle. The performance is analysed in terms of art, taking into account the political situation (March 1968). In order to establish the facts, the author uses an assistant’s script, the recollections of the witnesses of the release of Dziady and fragments of the performance. The reconstruction of the staging enabled the researcher to conclude that it was artistically valuable, but it was the political situation at the time that played the most important role in popularising that interpretation of the drama.

Opis:
The article discusses mechanisms of social immunisation in the context of the Polish ‘March 1968’. Whereas immunising strategies are a normal part of sociality, I argue that around 1968 a growing anxiety about the mechanisms of being-in-common led to an autoimmunitarian dissociation of the Polish society, which I conceptualise as an atmosphere of minusivity. Strategies to counter exclusions and discriminations were trapped in this immunitarian paradigm as well. A crisis of communication arose from the dissonance between the reality created by the official language surrounding March 1968, and the reality experienced by many people, as this latter reality was silenced and repressed. Mistrust in language resulted in an immunitarian retreat from affective communication, which was replaced by impersonal communicative scripts. This communicative crisis widely pre-vented the March experiences from being conveyed in the cul-tural production of the time; nonetheless, I will try to retrace some of the immunitarian and counter-immunitarian strategies in literature, film, and retrospective accounts.

Opis:
The article discusses select literary images and presentations of March 1968, which are treated as an example of a postcatastrophic narration. The author states that the events of the years 1967-1968 are often depicted in Polish literature as a kind of a “recurring catastrophe” – predicting an event of the calibre of the Holocaust. Similarities and parallels can be noticed on the artistic level (ways of representation) and ideological (judgement of events). Consequently, the catastrophe does not fulfil its cathartic function and does not become a breakthrough, instead its characteristic features are repetitions and new configurations. Finally, the author asks whether, and to what extent, Polish remembrance of March overlaps with the remembrance of the Holocaust, and to what degree the struggle with anti-Semitism in 1967-1968 was simultaneously a struggle with anti-Semitism during WWII.

The article is an attempt at analysing ‘Falcon’ hymns dated to the period before 1918. Some research difficulties (lack of research papers, chronological expansiveness, or mass culture affiliation) have been pointed out. Not only the role of a song-book is highlighted (in its numerous editions), but also other forms of those publications (i.e. in the Gymnastic Hand- book ”Falcon”), as well as the activity of impressive music societies in that period. Questions are asked about: the role and aim of those hymns; connections with the ideology of the Gymnastic Society ‘Falcon’; connections with national hymns, or the type of affiliation. The author mentions numerous examples of hyms, which have been present in Polish music tradition ever since.

Opis:
Stanisław Rogala (born in 1948) is a recognition writer of the Świętokrzyskie region. However, in his work there are Lublin accents; for almost 10 years the writer was associated with the Lublin region (he studied at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, participated in the poetry group „Samsara”, then he worked as a teacher at the Technical and Power Technical School in Lublin). Lublin accents frequently appear in his poetry and prose. Some poems are called “Lublin” because of the circumstances of the uprising (juvenile, lyrics from the time of „Samsara”), others deserve to be called “Lublin” because of the taken topic (Tryptyk nałęczowski, works dedicated to Longin J. Okoni). Rogala’s prose contains many accents of Lublin, the writer favors the theme of Lublin in March`68. He can present it not only objectively, but also in an original way, e.g. giving his poem a form which was a censored protocol of the audition (March snow) or by means of a metaphor (Dogs). Generally, the Lublin accents in prose are cleverer, more interesting, which proves the superiority of prose over the lyrics of Rogala.
