Opis:
Biblical glossary as a research problemThe Biblical glossary is one of the most important phenomena in the history of medieval scholarship, it combines the text of the Scriptures with a commentary in a special graphic layout. It played an important part in the popularisation of the Biblical studies. The glossary appeared around the turn of the twelve century in northern France in the milieu of cathedral school at Laon, with the key figure of Master Anselm. Already before the mid-twelve century glosses to individual books of the Bible gained huge popularity, and had hundreds of copies. At a certain time – it is thought today that it was the early thirteenth century – the text of the Glossary got stabilised. And although in the thirteenth century its popularity began to fade, it was copied to the end of the medieval period, and then many times published in print.Modern research into the glossary, although initiated in the nineteenth century, has in fact been developed in the 1980s. But ambitious source research and comparative analyses have shown that the Biblical glossary is a very difficult discipline. It was comparatively easy for researchers to have got through hagiographical legends that grew up around the glossary (for example the alleged authorship of Walafrid Strabon), but despite all the efforts only one book (Song of Songs) and some other fragments were published in a critical edition. In the course of ongoing studies more and more apparently “sure” points in our knowledge about the glossary are discredited, such as, for instance, the conviction that the glossary text had stabilised at one point of time. What hampers the research is mainly an enormous number of manuscript copies containing glosses, amounting to thousands of them. What is more, the production of those manuscripts was strictly standardised, making it difficult to establish not only their actual chronology, but also their place of origin. The research into the Biblical glossary is still a growing field of study.

This article presents manuscripts of The Meditations of Teresa Petrycówna, who was a sister of St. Norbert’s Order in Cracow in the 17th century. The chosen meditations will highlight not only Petrycówna’s individual style but also will present references to The Bible (mostly Songs of the Songs and Book of Psalms) as well as the works of Doctors and Fathers of the Church (mainly the influences of St. Augustine). It will also focus on the creative consciousness and didactic functions of her meditations which were in-tended by the author as a moral renovation for mankind and provide for greater reli-giousness.

Opis:
The use of scribal abbreviations in medieval manuscripts was mainly dictated by the need to save space and time as the creation of a medieval book was both extremely costly and time-consuming. One of the types of scribal abbreviations used in medieval manuscripts is abbreviation by superscript letter. In this type of abbreviations one superscript letter indicates the ending of a given word, or, in some cases, a medial position. Both vowels and consonants were used as abbreviations by superscript. They usually denoted, apart from the actual letter written in superscript, the preceding vowel or the letter . According to Cappelli (1929/1982), superscript letters in Latin were used mainly in word-final positions; however, it was not uncommon for a superscript vowel to appear word-medially. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the use of superscript letters in an early fifteenth-century manuscript of the Wycliffite Bible (Mscr.Dresd.Od.83) on the basis of the Gospel of Matthew. Within the manuscript there are both superscript consonants and vowels. However, in some cases these abbreviations seem to appear in very specific contexts, whereas in other cases the contexts allowing the abbreviations to appear are much broader. The possible reasons behind this situation will be discussed within this paper along with the correspondence between the superscript letter and the spelling conventions used within the manuscript.

Opis:
The article discusses the application of the principles of diacritical orthography in writing Czech words in the Latin treatise Orthographia Bohemica which contains instructions on how digraphs in Czech written texts should be replaced by diacritical signs. While many scholars consider Master Jan Hus to be the author, the treatise was copied by Kříž z Telče (Crux of Telč), a teacher and a priest, by hand into his manuscript convolute at the end of the 1450s. However, Kříž failed to write down the exemplary Czech words exactly according to the instructions in the treatise. At first sight, the signs above the letters seem chaotic and inaccurate. In medieval writings, signs carried out two main functions: first, a sign only accentuated a particular character (sign of non-semantic accentuation) and distinguished it from other, formally similar graphemes (e.g. <ẏ> versus ). Secondly, a sign provided a character with a different meaning (a diacritical sign) and a glyph with a sign represented a phoneme different than a glyph without a sign (e.g. versus <ž>). An orthographic analysis of some Czech biblical manuscripts from both the first and the second half of the 15th century has revealed that scribes used these two systems of accentuation at the same time and combined them. That is why the c /t͡ s/ and č /t͡ ʃ/ consonants recorded in the Orthogpraphia Bohemica treatise as either or <ċ> or <č> graphemes cannot be considered a simple scribe’s mistake but rather, a reflection of a different scribal usage.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the analysis of 17th century meditations about the Resurrection of Christ included in the manuscript collection of the Norbertine Sisters in Zwierzyniec. The reflection covers the traditions about the triumph of the glorified Lord, the women’s visit to the Lord’s Tomb, the announcement of the Resurrection to the women, Christ offering fish to his disciples, Christ’s meeting with Mary Magdalene and the disciples on their way to Emaus. The mode of presentation of these themes emphasizes a number of dogmas and truths of faith, mostly about the Resurrection of Christ and his divine nature. It is demonstrated in the article that the Norbertine texts were based not only on Gospels, but also on apocryphal sources and emblematic representations. The deliberations clarify that the author probably intended not only to report the course of events, but first of all to give a testimony of faith, to assert the real resurrection of the crucified Christ. An insight into the issue of the Resurrection of Christ in the light of biblical tradition and Old Polish literature is also offered.

Opis:
A single volume of a handwritten Bible of Czech provenance is located at the Archdiocesan Archives of Gniezno. The Bible was created in 1414 and its signature is BK Ms 142. This article presents and analyses the book in comparison with the rest of the library manuscripts present at the Archdiocesan Archives. The Czech Bible is a part of a small subset of biblical codices and an equally small group of Czech codices. The article concludes with a few research questions, connected to, among others, a paleographic study and the examination of the traditions of the biblical texts.
