Opis:
In the article’s introduction, the author points to the history of the book as one of the younger sub-disciplines and to its relevance for literary history. This fact is particularly important for old Dubrovnik where the first printing house was opened only in 1783. In the middle part of the article, certain aspects of manuscript culture in early modern Dubrovnik are studied. The author explains why until the 19th century a large part of the Ragusan literature was circulated in manuscripts and what the advantages of the manuscript compared to the printed book are. The author reminds that manuscripts carried out the function of printed books and indicates that printed books were frequently copied by hand.

Opis:
Sylvias (from the Latin silva rerum, i.e. forest of things) belong to the category of domestic books manuscript books, created in Old Polish times (17th-18th century) mainly in the noble community gentry circles. They are considered a valued source for historical and literary research due to the historical and literary research due to the variety of materials they contain, collected by their authors without a specific plan according to their tastes possibilities and needs. The author of one of the largest works of this kind was Aleksander Jastkowski (c. 1625/30– c. 1691), a nobleman from the Przemyśl land Ruthenian Voivodeship, a judge of the Przemyśl lands. His sylva entitled. ‘Compendium omnis activitatis politici et rei economicae ex variis authoribus collectae’ (National Ossolineum Library in Wroclaw, manuscript no. 3554) should be considered a typical example of this type of writing. This sylva was created successively probably for more than half a century mainly by A. Jastkowski, and was completed after his death at the beginning of the 18th century by persons unknown to us. It numbers 594 pages and contains in copies numerous materials, mostly relating to public life at the time (approx. 45% of the total manuscript), such as journalistic writings, correspondence and speeches by dignitaries state dignitaries, the Diary of the Sejm of 1652, records of the Sejmik of the Ruskie Voivodeship in Sądowa and others. In addition, it contains notes by A. Jaskowski concerning his private matters, copies of his and his family’s estate documents, extracts from his and his family’s property documents, excerpts from books he had read, and notes on various fields of knowledge (cultivation of the soil, medicine, Polish and general history, legal and constitutional subjects, etc.), literary works, and notes on the history of Poland etc.), literary works, specimens and examples of occasional letters, materials concerning the private affairs of various individuals.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present and to analyse Litaniae in D by Jacek Szczurowski – a Polish composer, cleric, conductor, and teacher. His work, previously unknown and unpublished, has been preserved in a unique musical manuscript from the collection of the Piarists, now stored at the State Archives in Modra, near Bratislava. This article includes information about the composer, the state of research on his works and a description of the litaniae as a genre in general. Litaniae in D by Jacek Szczurowski is a work which deserves wider attention from musicologists. The composer divided his Litaniae into nine parts: Kyrie eleison, Pater de caelis, Mater Christi, Virgo prudentissima, Speculum iustitiae, Rosa mystica, Salus infirmorum, Regina Angelorum, Agnus Dei and each of these parts has its own character compatible with the lyrics. The piece uses the basic and typical techniques of those times, thanks to its interesting concept is distinguished by the form and the development of the words. Szczurowski combined music and lyrics of litaniae in a great manner, e.g. by repetition of important words (for example miserere), the way Szczurowski uses rests is also significant, as they separate syllables and imitate crying. The most important thing, however, is that he uses rhetoric, and this shows that he was not an average composer.

The article gives analysis of author’s manuscript dedications inscribed predominantly on the title page. The dedication is a short text, closed in terms of content and composi- tion, in which author ascribes his/her work. The basie pattem of dedicatory formula inclu- des: a name of addressee, a reąuest for reception and a signature of addresser. On one hand dedicatory formulae as the typical minimal texts, serving a polite function of a language, retain continuity and permanence of some of the structures (a few linguistic conventions are repeated); on the other they are distinguished by individual, original mo- difications conceming mainly well thought out and elaborated forms in comparison with minimal pattem. The stylistic form of a dedication depends largely on the relation between addresser and recipient, sociol status of interlocutors, type of relations, the choice of functional style, situation in which the action is performed, the time of formation is less important.Even thought contemporary dedications are characterized by morę straightforward way of addressing recipient, diversity of occasions and spontaneity, they still retain so- lemn naturę of statement.

This article presents selected aspects of the anonymous Old English epic Beowulf in which the elements of the world of fantasy are intertwined with historical episodes, and Christian values co-occur with the images of pagan rites. Written in the vernacular and to the rhythm of alliterative metre Beowulf is an example of the highest artistic achievement. The anonymous poet skillfully depicted the harsh Northern world shaped by the Christian culture. Although Beowulf has been studied since the beginning of the 19th century many fundamental issues are still unresolved. With the focus on the source text and its manuscript context some of the puzzles may yet be unravelled.

The way France was presented in early modern Poland has been researched so far by many historians. However, the state of modern research is still considered insufficient and thus it is important to organize and, if possible, quantify the source material which can be used in this kind of analysis. There are still many manuscripts containing an enormous amount of information concerning the visions of France in early modern Poland, which are yet to be recognized by modern historiography. This report is an attempt to name the most important ones – such as geographical compilations, astronomy handbooks and even poems – all not used frequently enough in this kind of inquiry. This attempt at organization leads to conclusions that there are many historical sources left behind in the archives. They can be used not only to analyse the image of France in the eighteenth century, but also prove to be an excellent basis for more wide speculations – such as reflections on the state of literature and science in Poland in the given period. The fact that most of them were used for educational purposes can be used in advantage for a researcher – one can also analyse the state of early modern Polish education.

The oldest book which was on the territory of the early Piast in the second half of the tenth century derived, comes from the Benedictine scriptoria from the area of Bavaria, Saxony, Rhineland and Lorraine and contained the biblical texts and established liturgical canon necessary for the celebration of the Mass. Preserved from the twelfth century regulations of Cistercian chapters which decided that in each monastery there should be: missal, epistolary, Gospel Book, gradual, antiphonary, liber hymnarius, psaltery, lectionary and calendar. These regulations made the copywriter’s work particularly important. The importance attributed to their work is attested to, for example, by their release by the General Chapter of the Order from other duties in favor of the monastery, and by the permission in some cases to work at night. In Cistercian scriptoria apart from copying of the liturgical texts, the memorials so-called libri virorum et mortuorum, there were preparing documents for the current administrative and economic work of the monastery; in addition there were writing yearbooks, obituaries, monastery chronicles or epitaphs poem. There were recording notes of daily life outside the walls of the enclosure, names and functions of friars particularly events that took place away from the monastery or notes about elementary disasters happening in the proximate areas, the damages of monastery caused by floods, fires or epidemics. The preserved manuscript codes are an priceless source for learning the minds, interpersonal relationships prevailing in the small communities, their relations with their nearest surrounding and medieval way of seeing the world.

Zofia Stryjeńska was one of the most famous Polish art déco painters. Known mainly for her work in the applied arts, she was very well known in Poland before World War II. In 1945 she left her native land to live abroad. It was only in 2014 that some of her manuscripts – which had been preserved by Stryjeńska’s closest family in Switzerland – were donated to the Jagiellonian Library. This donation consists of 57 units (BJ, sygn. rkps Przyb. 108–164/15) and includes Stryjeńska’s personal papers, her memoirs, fragments of her various works (inter alia her sketchbook, the manuscript of a scenario for the ballet Korowaj and sketches of the costumes for that ballet), her correspondence, press cuttings (mainly reviews and reproductions of Stryjeńska's works) and family notes and documents. The legacy of Zofia Stryjeńska was displayed at an exhibition entitled Stryjeńska. A Portrait Made of Words which was held at the Jagiellonian Library from 19th November to 18th December 2015. Stryjeńska’s nephew and her other heirs subsequently donated more items to the Library, which enriched the collection (shelfmarks: rkps Przyb. 217/05, 34–36/16, 39/16).

The Library of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences has been recently enriched by the accession of the manuscript “Poetical texts from the first half of the nineteenth century”. The manuscript includes a number of patriotic poems put down in the manuscript between 1848-1849. The article provides information on the physical description of the manuscript item (its present shelf number being: rkp. 2112) and a detailed list of its contents. Individual works have been listed in alphabetical order according to the names of the authors, with annotations concerning first editions. The bulk of the poems included in the manuscript were published prior to their inclusion in the manuscript, some of them after the year 1849. At the present stage of the investigation, some of the poems have not been confirmed to have been published earlier. An anonumous 12-verse poem without a title, attached to the communique at full length, has been identified by the author of the article as a poem whose last four verses were published in 1881 in the book Kraków — Zagrzebiowi under the title W albumie księcia Golicyna by Adam Mickiewicz. The article is intended to stimulate those engaged in research of the history of literature in further investigations concerning the said collection of poems, in particular the last mentioned text.

Galileo in Poland: a 17th-century Latin Translation of the Proposta della longitudine The relationship between Galileo and Poland is a particularly obscure chapter of the Florentine’s extraordinary intellectual biography. Currently, our knowledge of this important connection remains limited to the 19th-century studies of Artur Wołyński and that of Bronisław Biliński in 1969. In light of this important yet neglected field, this article examines a previously unknown Latin version of the Proposta della longitudine, printed in Cracow in 1642. Currently preserved in a single manuscript copy at the National Library in Florence, this brief tract represents an exemplar of Galileo’s work that circulated handwritten in early modern Italy. Printed in Cracow, the Proposta is the only translation of Galileo’s work in Poland during the seventeenth century, and represents a missing piece in the greater puzzle of the personal and professional relations Galileo established with Polish intellectual circles. This Latin translation is not only a bibliographical rarity; it is a cultural product that unlocks new perspectives from which to analyze the relationship between the non-Italian reception of the vicissitudes of Galileo’s personal and intellectual journey, and that of the scientist himself. As in other European regions, Polish attitudes towards Italian literary products were such as to give them prominence in light of the “function and power of innovation” (Davide Conrieri). The translation of the Proposta della longitudine, printed some thirty years after its original draft, thus provided an opportunity, at least in the conception of its sponsor and translator, to launch a debate of significant public interest.
