Within 200 years since the industrial revolution manufacturing systems have often changed their faces. Emerging nations, new markets, new inventions and the changing needs of the society forced them to adapt. Until today, the arising challenges are immensely diverse: highly individualized products, decreasing manufacturing time, limited resources and critical ecological footprints are only a few of them. Oftentimes solutions for these issues and other future requirements can be found by interrogating nature. Applying knowledge of biological principles to industrial manufacturing processes is recently referred to as "biological transformation of manufacturing systems". Hereby three levels of a biological transformation are introduced, starting from inspiration over integration to the interaction of biological and technical systems. The paper illustrates the idea of biological transformation with specific examples for each level. On the inspiration-level the design of manufacturing systems with elements of natural ecosystems is described. Thus flexibility is increased, material cycles are closed and waste will be reduced. Furthermore the integration-level is illustrated by the use of microorganisms in cutting fluids. Finally, evolutionary computing within an automatic joining cell is shown as an example for the interaction-level.

The Internet and Internet search engines have revolutionized the way in which we search for, and integrate information into our daily lives. One of the problems with general Internet search engines is the diversity of contexts queries can assume. Therefore, the construction of context-restricted search engines designed for use within a specialized domain has been proposed (S. Lawrence, 2000). The objective of this article is to suggest a model for a collaborative, personalized meta-search agent system for the virtual manufacturing enterprise in the context of resource location and integration across scope of the extended manufacturing enterprise. The key differences between the proposed model and general search engines are (1) the ability to personalize the search task according to an individual user need, (2) the utilization of similar search sessions through partner collaboration at an information retrieval level, (3) leveraging on existing search services available on the virtual enterprise extranet and (4) autonomous behaviour through the use of intelligent agents. The perceived benefits of a such search agent system for the virtual enterprise are: (1) Enabling a consistent and uniform view of business entities through improved access to information, (2) Simplified access to operational data, (3) Effective access and retrieval of organizational model elements and (4) Improving data location and sharing between trading partners providing a platform for tighter process integration between trading partners. These benefits are critical for effective decision making in a collaborative engineering process followed by the differing entities in a virtual manufacturing organization to ultimately enable final product realization. An evaluation strategy for the COPEMSA system presented is then briefly discussed, metrics for evaluation of focused crawlers and justification for development and implementation of the search system proposed. Finally, this article concludes with remarks about the model presented and future research to be undertaken.

The presented method is constructed for optimum scheduling in production lines with parallel machines and without intermediate buffers. The production system simultaneously performs operations on various types of products. Multi-option products were taken into account – products of a given type may differ in terms of details. This allows providing for individual requirements of the customers. The one-level approach to scheduling for multioption products is presented. The integer programming is used in the method – optimum solutions are determined: the shortest schedules for multi-option products. Due to the lack of the intermediate buffers, two possibilities are taken into account: no-wait scheduling, possibility of the machines being blocked by products awaiting further operations. These two types of organizing the flow through the production line were compared using computational experiments, the results of which are presented in the paper.

This paper investigates a production system configuration with respect to the use of technological machines that make part of this system. The investigation involved the design of a reconfigurable production system for manufacturing shafts. Based on input data, the number of necessary technological machines (machine tools) is defined, system configurations ensuring the required rate of production yield are developed and selected solutions (configurations) are analyzed. The production system was assessed based on numerical simulation results obtained with Enterprise Dynamics.

Czynniki oddziałujące na proces kształtowania EDM materiałów trudno obrabialnych powodują wzrost niedokładności wymiarowo-kształtowej, chropowatości powierzchni wyrobów, a także przyspieszone zużycie narzędzia. W artykule przedstawiono analizę zależności odchyłek wykonawczych powierzchni, które powstają w cyklicznym procesie kształtowania EDM, i odchyłek narzędzia od wybranych czynników. W analizie zastosowano metodę Pareto ANOVA. Geometrię oceniano na podstawie odchyłek wymiaru i odchyłek geometrycznych elektrody oraz kształtowanej nią powierzchni wyrobu. Pomiary wykonano na współrzędnościowej maszynie pomiarowej w trybie kontroli po każdym cyklu obróbki pojedynczego elementu. Obróbkę zrealizowano w Zintegrowanym Systemie Wytwarzania (ZSW), pracującym w Centrum Obsługi Badań Naukowych i Dydaktyki WIMIR AGH. Przeanalizowano także wskaźniki WRR i MRR, charakteryzujące efektywność procesu i przydatność narzędzia.
Factors influencing the process of EDM shaping of hard-to-machine materials result in increased dimensional inaccuracy, surface roughness, and accelerated tool wear. The article presents an analysis of the dependence of the real deviations of the surfaces of the machined parts that are manufactured in the cyclic process of machining EDM, as well as the deviations of the used tools, from selected factors. The analysis uses the Pareto ANOVA method. Geometry was evaluated on the basis of deviations of the tool and the corresponding deviations of the surface. Measurements were performed in the Integrated Manufacturing System working in the WIMIR AGH Scientific Research Center, on the coordinate measuring machine in inspection mode, after each machining cycle of a single element. The WRR and MRR indicators were also analyzed, characterizing the process efficiency and utility of the tool.

Intensive development of technologies, in particular of the spinotronics, nanotechnology, robotics, and ICT, shapes the new generation production systems. Their distinctive feature is the flexibility associated with production intelligence. It is required from all processes, including the production planning and control processes (PPCP). The article is of conceptual character. It was prepared based on literature research. It encompasses issues related to Next Generation Manufacturing Systems, including Intelligent Manufacturing Systems in particular, covering solutions for PPCP. The article was also built upon the results of research on the level of automation of Polish manufacturing enterprises. The research results in the development of general assumptions of an informatic management system for the transformation of PPCP for technologically advanced and organizational production systems. The system has a modular structure resulting from its functions, which include identifying the need for transformation, its goals and vision, planning, design, implementation and evaluation of transformation. It takes the technical, organizational, socio-psychological and economic aspects of transformation into account. Choosing the right solutions for PPCP purposes allows for flexible adaptation to the requirements and needs of the environment. Its essential part is the knowledge database, thanks to which it is possible to shape the system’s intelligence.

The goal of the paper is to make a cross-industrial comparison of the effect of sales planning practices on different types of manufacturing strategies applied in 343 producing companies operating in European, Asian and African supply chains. In order to achieve an empirical aim a necessary methodology and statistical analyses have been employed. In the result of the analysis multiple regression models have been developed for specific manufacturing strategies in supply chains operating in different industries worldwide. It enabled to make cross-sectoral comparisons of the contribution to variance in manufacturing strategy.

Artykuł przedstawia fazy tworzenia oprogramowania w dużym projekcie lotniczym, realizowanym przez wiele współpracujących ze sobą firm europejskich. W pracy zostały poruszone kwestie procesu tworzenia planu projektu, jego realizacji sprzętowej i programowej oraz jego integracji i testowania na różnych platformach testowych. Omówiono sposób wyboru narzędzi i platform sprzętowych i programistycznych wykorzystywanych w projekcie, uzgodnienie protokołów komunikacyjnych i proces integrowania stworzonego systemu na docelowych urządzeniach w celu przetestowania. Proces realizacji projektu przedstawiono w oparciu o doświadczenia zdobyte podczas pracy przy projekcie FP6 SOFIA (Safe Automatic Flight Back and Landing of Aircraft), który był tworzony w latach 2006-2009.
The article discusses phases of manufacturing big, aircraft software system, realized by cooperation of a few European companies. The paper is focused on requirements definition, design, coding, integration and testing of system created during the project. The article discussed the process of selection of hardware and software platforms used in the project, the choice of communication protocols, process of integration of the new system into destination platforms and process of testing. The described cycle of manufacturing software system was based on experience collected during FP6 SOFIA (Safe Automatic Flight Back and landing of Aircraft) project realized in years 2006-2009.

Even the best technology will be ineffective if not used appropriately, therefore education and training about cybersecurity principles and programs are essential components of any cybersecurity strategy. This article presents selected models of the decision support theory from the point of view of cybersecurity education. The analysis of scientific literature and the available research results serve as a base to characterize approaches to raise the awareness of decision-makers about potential cyber threats and the development of appropriate attitudes and the conscious use of information systems and digital resources. The main part of the article is devoted to the issue of the use of teaching methods to increase the involvement of learners. It also describes examples of selected models of the game theory used in IT security education, including examples of simulation games dedicated to decision-making in the domain of IT security.

The introduction of CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) systems in the 1980s, aiming at integrating automatic workstations into fully automated factories, was not successful. The root causes of this failure were that the subsystems to be integrated were not suitably designed for easy integration into a larger system. This situation stimulated the authors to embark on a research programme on ‘design for the unexpected’. It defined how subsystems have to be designed so that integration into larger systems becomes easier and how such an integrated system can be controlled so that it can cope with change and disturbances. In the paper, the design principles and salient features of holonic manufacturing systems (HMS) are outlined. The PROSA reference architecture, defining the basic structure of any HMS, is described. It is further explained how coordination and control of the HMS is achieved by a holonic manufacturing execution system (HMES), based on the combination of the PROSA reference architecture and a biologically inspired Delegate Multiagent System (DMAS). Finally, the power and universality of the PROSA/DMAS system is demonstrated by some case studies from manufacturing, robotics and open air engineering.

Rapidly rotating systems such as centrifuges are widely used in medicine and laboratories to efficiently separate different constituents of liquids. Rotors, which hold sample containers, are an essential part of centrifuges. Since they are subjected to extreme mechanical loads, rotors are one of a centrifuge’s core safety components. Their deficits served as the point of departure for the development of a novel manufacturing technology, which is based on carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP). Its supporting structure is entirely in the loading plane, thus enabling the rotor to absorb higher centrifugal forces while requiring the same amount of material. The new design concept for the load-bearing structure includes a geodesically molded annular support member. It transmits forces better than present products and increases rigidity. In order to eliminate the known problems with obtaining the necessary manufacturing quality of hollow fiber composite bodies, the authors developed the process of centrifugal infusion. Their proposed solution is based on generating higher gravitation forces, thus effectively eliminating detrimental gas pockets and simultaneously optimizing surface quality and impregnation.

This research deals with the development of Autonomous Distributed Manufacturing Systems (ADiMS) Concept and an example of its application in the casting industry. ADiMS is a manufacturing system concept developed to increase the flexibility of the system. In ADiMS, each of the manufacturing system elements (holon) had been modelled as an intelligent element with the result that each element had capability to manage Information, communicate each other, and to make decision. The whole manufacturing problems arę solved by each element and coordination among them. In the modelling at the developed application software, UML (Unified Modelling Language) was used, where each element of manufacturing system was modelled as a class as in the Object Oriented Programming (OOP) concept. As a case study, the development of the concept analysis and application software to manage casting industry, that has a piston ring as its main product, was carried out. The application software that had been developed, that still in aproto type stage, has five main functions that are an order management system, Quality Assurance, Warehouse management, Jig & Fixture Storage Area management, and Sand Casting Area management functions. Inside each function, there are several objects that working together with coordination among each others. The application showed that all main functions can make communication through the database server. The developed application that discussed at this research has a client - server technology. The same web-based system with the n-tier technology is still in the development stage now.

Dynamic reliability analysis of binary systems has been widely studied in case of homogeneous continuous time Markov process assumption in the literature. In this study, we evaluate dynamic performance of a multi-state rotor line of electric motors manufacturing system under non-homogeneous continuous time Markov process (NHCTMP) degradation by using lifetime distributions of seven workstations within the system. By means of this degradation process assumption we capture the effect of age on the state change of components in the analysis by means of time dependent transition rates between states of the workstations. Essentially this is typical of many systems and more practical to use in real life applications. The working principle is based on a three state structure. If all the machines within each workstation work, the workstation is defined as working with the full performance. Whenever at least one machine fails within each workstation, then the workstation is defined as working with partial performance. If all the machines in the workstation fail then the workstation is defined as failed. The lifetime properties of the workstations under NHCTMP assumption have been studied for this three-state structure of the workstations. The workstations are all working independently and nonidentically from each other and they are connected in series within the system.We especially performed an extensive application study based on the lifetime data regarding the seven workstations within a manufacturing system. Dynamic reliability results are also discussed for the system structure. Some performance characteristics are developed for both workstations and the system as well. Numerical results for the performance characteristics of those workstations and the system are provided and supported with some graphical illustrations.
W literaturze przedmiotu, niezawodność dynamiczną układów binarnych analizuje się szeroko przy założeniu, że badane procesy stanowią jednorodne procesy Markowa z czasem ciągłym. W niniejszym artykule dokonano oceny dynamiki pracy wielostanowej linii do produkcji wirników będącej częścią systemu produkcji silników elektrycznych. Badania prowadzono przy założeniu, że degradacja stanowi niejednorodny proces Markowa z czasem ciągłym (NHCTMP). Do badań wykorzystano rozkłady cyklu życia siedmiu stanowisk wchodzących w skład systemu. Dzięki założeniu dotyczącemu procesu degradacji, udało się uchwycić wpływ wieku komponentów na zmianę ich stanu wykorzystując w analizie zależne od czasu szybkości przejścia między stanami badanych stanowisk. Ujęte w ten sposób zjawisko degradacji jest typowe dla wielu systemów, co oznacza, że proponowana metoda lepiej niż inne metody sprawdzi się w rzeczywistych zastosowaniach. W metodzie przyjmuje się, że stanowiska produkcyjne charakteryzuje struktura trójstanowa. Jeśli wszystkie maszyny na danym stanowisku działają prawidłowo, stanowisko określa się jako w pełni sprawne. Gdy co najmniej jedna maszyna na danym stanowisku ulegnie uszkodzeniu, stanowisko określa się jako częściowo sprawne. Jeśli wszystkie maszyny na danym stanowisku ulegną uszkodzeniu, stanowisko określa się jako niesprawne. Właściwości cyklu życia stanowisk produkcyjnych badano przy założeniu NHCTMP oraz trójstanowej struktury stanowisk. Wszystkie stanowiska w omawianym systemie działają niezależnie od siebie w sposób nieidentyczny i tworzą układ szeregowy. W pracy przeprowadzono obszerne badania aplikacyjne w oparciu o dane dotyczące cyklu życia siedmiu stanowisk wykorzystywanych w badanym systemie produkcyjnym. Omówiono także wyniki analizy niezawodności dynamicznej dla struktury systemu. Ponadto opracowano parametry pracy zarówno dla indywidualnych stanowisk jak i systemu jako całości. Wartości liczbowe tych parametrów zestawiono w tabelach oraz przedstawiono w formie graficznej.

Dynamika rozwoju e-commerce jest generatorem zmian w podejściu do obsługi klienta i produkcji towarów. W artykule wymieniono główne kierunki rozwoju handlu elektronicznego oraz przedstawiono możliwości ich wykorzystania w koncepcji przemysłu 4.0. W artykule przedstawiono główne kierunki rozwoju e-commerce oraz możliwości ich wykorzystania w koncepcji przemysłu 4.0. Artykuł zawiera szczegółową dyskusję na temat problemów związanych z połączeniem koncepcji ecommerce i Industry 4.0. Głównym celem badań jest wyjaśnienie, w jaki sposób cyfrowy proces sprzedaży może w przyszłości wspierać przemysł wytwórczy. Przedstawiono najważniejsze czynniki i stymulatory wpływające na rynek e-commerce. Ponadto, opisano te, które mają na niego największy wpływ oraz możliwości wykorzystania ich w e-commerce.
The dynamics of e-commerce development is a generator of changes in the approach to customer service and production of goods. In the article the main directions of development of ecommerce and the possibilities of their using in the concept of Industry 4.0 are presented. The paper is providing a detailed discussion of the issues surrounding a join of e-commerce and the Industry 4.0 concept. The main aim of the research is to explain how the digital sales process can support the manufacturing industry in the future. The most important factors and stimulators affecting the ecommerce market were listed. In addition, those that have the most impact on it and the possibilities of using them in e-commerce are described.

Opis:
The article presents the results of conducted empirical research in which an attempt was made to identify the expectations of manufacturing companies towards suppliers in terms of process (logistics customer service, supervision over property customer, production monitoring, supplier supervision) improvement. The research was conducted using the Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) technique. The research covered 150 production medium and large size companies (employing over 50 people) who were suppliers for enterprises from the automotive, electromechanical and chemical sectors operating in the Polish industrial market. The expectations of production companies towards their suppliers regarding improvement of processes concept were assigned a rank on a scale from one (the least important criterion) to five (the most significant). The analysis of the results of the conducted research shows that the implementation of management tools such as international organizational standards (ISO), Kaizen or Lean Management by companies that are purchasers may affect the expectations towards suppliers in terms of improving their processes. The considerations undertaken in this article confirm that in order to compete on the modern market, close cooperation and cooperation within the supply chain are needed. Representatives of the surveyed manufacturing companies notice this fact and set high expectations for their suppliers in virtually all the surveyed aspects. Conducted research shows that suppliers must pay special attention to the implementation of processes related to ensuring and improving the technical quality of products by focusing on improving control and supervision processes and logistical aspects of customer service. Proper implementation and improvement of these processes requires a methodical approach. Based on the obtained research results, managers of organizations supplying manufacturing companies can obtain important information that will be used to improve processes that are important from the point of view of their recipients. On this basis, they can make an optimal allocation of resources and modify the management style to improve cooperation with manufacturing companies.
