Opis:
Reverse engineering (RE) aims at the reproduction of products following a detailed examination of their construction or composition. Nowadays, industrial applications of RE were boosted by combining it with additive manufacturing. Printing of reverse-engineered elements has become an option particularly when spare parts are needed. In this paper, a case study was presented that explains how such an approach can be implemented in the case of products with asymmetric mechanical properties and using replacement materials. In this case study, a reverse engineering application was conducted on a textile machine spare part. To this end, the nearest material was selected to the actual material selection and some mechanical tests were made to validate it. Next, a replacement part was designed by following the asymmetric push-in pull-out characteristic. Finally, the finite element analysis with Additive Manufacturing was combined and validated experimentally.

Opis:
This paper presents test results for the steel grade 15HGMV metallurgical purity, microstructure, method of production and effect on the mechanical performance of the input stock material for calibre 227 mm missile motor casings manufactured by cold flow forming. The reference product for the determination of preliminary design criteria of missile casings of the higher calibre were calibre 122 mm missiles manufactured in Poland. The final mechanical properties of the casings are a cumulative effect of quenching and tempering and strain hardening during cold flow forming. The research and industrial practice carried out so far have demonstrated that the production process of a Feniks missile (with a 1.5 mm thick casing wall) requires steel grades of extremely high purity. This steel grade is manufactured by VAD (Vacuum Arc Degassing) melting, followed by ESR (ElectroSlag Remelting) or, alternatively by melting and casting in vacuum oven. The content of hard and non-deformable non-metallic inclusions such as oxides is critical to the success of cold flow forming. The cal. 227 mm missile casings feature walls approximately 2.5 mm thick and produced by cold flow forming from a quenched and tempered intermediate product. New material specifications should be developed for this reason to enable correct cold flow forming and contribute to a significant improvement in the cost efficiency of manufacturing. The investigations covered herein were guided by an assumption that the thicker wall sections might make the material specifications applicable to lower-calibre missiles to restrictive and obsolete about cal. 227 missiles. After initial laboratory tests, this hypothesis will be verified in industrial experiments on the production of prototype missile casings from input stock materials varying in metallurgical purity.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań czystości metalurgicznej stali 15CrMoV6-10-3 (15HGMV), mikrostruktury, sposobu jej uzyskania i wpływu na właściwości mechaniczne materiału przeznaczonego do wytwarzania eksperymentalnych korpusów silników rakiet kalibru 227 mm metodą zgniatania obrotowego na zimno. Produkowane w kraju rakiety kal.

Lean and Green manufacturing processes aim at achieving lower material and labour costs, while reducing impacts on the environment, and promoting sustainability as a whole. This paper reports on a pilot experiment with higher education and engineering students, exploring the full potential of a collaborative approach on courses integrating the Portuguese Polytechnic of Castelo Branco engineering studies curricula, while simultaneously improving their proficiency in English. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become a key area of curricular innovation since it is known for improving both language and content teacher and student motivation. In this context, instructional design for CLIL entailed tandem work of content (engineering) and language (English) teacher to design learning sequences and strategies. This allowed students to improve not only their language skills in English but also their knowledge in the specific engineering domain content on green and lean manufacturing processes.

Quick Response Manufacturing

Opis:
The market of consumer goods requires nowadays quick response to customer needs. As a consequence, this is transferred to the time restrictions that the semi-finished product manufacturer must meet. Therefore the cost of manufacturing cannot determine how production processes are designed, and the main evaluation function of manufacturing processes is the response time to customers’ orders. One of the ideas for implementing this idea is the QRM (Quick Response Manufacturing) production organization system. The purpose of the research undertaken by the authors was to develop an innovative solution in the field of production structure, allowing for the implementation of the QRM concept in a Contract Manufacturer, which realizes its tasks according to engineering-to-order (ETO) system in conditions defined as High Mix, Low Volume, High Complexity. The object of the research was to select appropriate methods for grouping products assuming that certain operations will be carried out in traditional but well-organized technological and/or linear cells. The research was carried out in one of the largest producers of sheet metal components in Europe. Pre-completed groupings for data obtained from the company had indicated that – among the classical methods – the best results had been given by the following methods: King’s Algorithm (otherwise called: Binary Ordering, Rank Order Clustering), k-means, and Kohonen’s neural networks. The results of the tests and preliminary simulations based on the data from the company proved that the implementation of the QRM concept does not have to be associated with the absolute formation of multi-purpose cells. It turned out that the effect of reducing the response time to customer needs can be obtained by using hybrid structures that combine solutions characteristic of cellular systems with traditional systems such as a technological, linear, or mixed structure. However, this requires the application of technological solutions with the highest level of organization.

This article deals with the problems of design improvement and the process of production preparation for recreational watercrafts. An original expert system was created to facilitate the design of mechanical equipment systems and to support the production of pleasure boats. This expert system contains information about issues related to the selection of appropriate mechanical equipment used in modern yachts. An expert system is a computer program, which contains information about a specific and usually narrow field of expertise. With the help of this kind of program, it is possible to solve problems on the same level as a human expert. Like most expert systems, this program is built in such a way that the knowledge base is separated from the rest of the system. It contains two main modules: the knowledge base and the inference mechanism. This system provides conclusions in a descriptive form and in the form of numbers, and presents explanations, diagrams, drawings, photos and videos. What is unique about this expert system is that a user with specialist knowledge in the field of yacht engineering can easily modify the knowledge base. With the development of technology, it is easy to feed new information into the system. This system can become a major tool in design offices and plants producing yachts, because it can be easily expanded and adapted to individual needs.

The necessity for quick responding to changing market conditions forces manufacturers to seek new ways of designing and implementing production facilities. One method manufacturers are quickly adopting is process modeling and simulation, often referred to as virtual manufacturing (VR). Virtual manufacturing allows engineers to view a computer-simulated version of how the final machines or processes should operate. They can eliminate process design flaws in the early stages of development, giving significant savings. The paper describes two examples of complex approach to solve typical engineering problems using advanced CAx system.

Design for manufacturing (DFM) strategies help companies to develop new products that are feasible to manufacture. In the early stages of design all engineering activities are initiated in computer aided systems. When the design is finished, the process of manufacturing and production planning begins. Issues often occur at this point because two teams, designers and manufacturers, have been working separately. The resulting question is: ‘how can Knowledge Engineering (KE) be used effectively to enhance manufacturability during early design?’ Even if the most complex geometrical product can be realized using today’s technologies such as rapid prototyping it is only true in unit production. In lot and mass production where CNC machines are used, complex geometry causes a number of difficulties. So it is important to investigate the project carefully in the early design stage from the point of view of whether it will be possible to manufacture.

The engineering sector is the backbone of industrial production in Slovakia. In recent years this sector has experienced record lows and highs nearly simultaneously. In Slovakia, it represents a kind of mother industry. Production for automotive vehicles is the strongest branch of engineering manufacturing, followed by the production of electrical and optical equipment. In summary, there is a view that engineering businesses in Slovakia have weak capital strength and financing their development is very risky. It is therefore necessary to look for other sources of financing, which would offer these businesses a competitive edge in a market economy, while adhering to legal requirements. The aim of the authors is to determine, using mathematical and statistical methods, for funding opportunities that engineering companies in the Slovak Republic can take advantage of. This paper deals with the analysis of financial metrics for the period 2007-2013.
Sektor inżynieryjny jest podstawą produkcji przemysłowej na Słowacji. W ostatnich latach sektor ten doświadczał niemal równocześnie rekordowych upadków i wzlotów.
