Opis:
In this study, the effect of MnCl2 on scheelite flotation with sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector and sodium silicate as a depressant was assessed by a combination of flotation experiments, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and solution chemistry. The flotation experiments confirmed that the addition of MnCl2 before sodium silicate showed an adverse effect on flotation and the recovery of scheelite gradually decreased as the amount of MnCl2 was increased. When MnCl2 was added afte r sodium silicate, the recovery of scheelite gradually increased with an increase in the amount of MnCl2. The results of FTIR, XPS, and solution chemistry indicated that MnCl2 acted on the surface of scheelite in the form of manganese ions. When MnCl2 was added before sodium silicate, manganese ions adsorbed on the surface of scheelite reacted with sodium silicate to form a hydrophilic silicate, which covers the surface of scheelite and blocks the adsorption of NaOL. However, when MnCl2 was added after sodium silicate, manganese ions are continued to be adsorbed on the surface of scheelite, which increases the cations on the surface of scheelite, and hence the condition becomes conducive for the interaction between scheelite and NaOL.

Opis:
The study is concerned with the course of sorption of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺ and Mn²⁺ ions and with their washing, out with distilled water in sandy, loess, and loamy soils. Sorption was conducted according to the idynamic method. ODR and Eh were measured as indices of soil oxygenation. It was found that oxygen deficiency of the soils under study, with a change in their reaction from acid to neutral, resulted in: 1. an increase in the sorption of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions, 2. an increase in the sorption of Mn²⁺ ions in the loamy soil only.

Opis:
The processes of manganese (II) ions removal from water using sorbent catalysts and ion exchange materials modified with iron oxides were studied. It was shown that manganese ions oxidize very slowly in artesian water, even when the pH is adjusted to 9.0. Intensive aeration of solutions due to stirring also does not promote the oxidation of manganese (II) ions. The degree of manganese extraction due to oxidation is reduced from 20–30% for solutions with a concentration of manganese ions of 1 and 5 mg/dm3 to 11–15% for solutions with a concentration of 15 and 30 mg/dm3. A significant increase in the oxidation efficiency of manganese ions was achieved by using magnetite as a sorbent catalyst. The efficiency of water demanganization increases along with the intensity of water aeration when mixing solutions. It was established that strongly acid cation exchangers provide efficient extraction of manganese ions from water. At the same time, a high exchange capacity of strong acid cation exchange resin KU-2–8 in acid and salt form was noted. It was shown that the capacity of manganese ions of this cation exchange resin in the Ca2+-form is slightly lower. When using the KU-2–8 in Ca2+-form of cation exchange resin to remove manganese ions from the solution already in the first samples, the leakage of manganese ions at the level of 10 mg/dm3 and above was observed. This indicates that this form of ion exchanger is not suitable for deep purification of water from manganese (II) ions. In order to increase the efficiency of manganese ion extraction from water, increase the duration of the filter cycle, magnetite and magnetite-modified KU-2–8 cation exchange resin were used as a sorbent-catalyst. It was shown that the cation exchange resin modified with magnetite provides the removal of a significant part of manganese ions due to catalytic oxidation on magnetite. The conditions of effective manganese extraction under static and dynamic conditions are determined.

Opis:
The influence of addition of MgS04-7H20 on biomass yield of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was evaluated in this study. Capacities of binding magnesium ions by S. cerevisiae yeast during cultivation on the YPG-medium (laboratory) and in the industrial scale were analyzed. It was stated that in the industrial conditions the higher amount of magnesium in the respective propagation is required. In the laboratory conditions the yield of yeast cultivated on the experimental media enriched with different amount (0,05, 0,3 and 0,5 g ·dm-3) of magnesium ions was also significantly higher than the yield from YPD - control medium. Growing concentration of magnesium ions in the experimental media caused the increasing of magnesium content in the yeast biomass.

Opis:
We investigated the antioxidant defense mechanism, metal uptake and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels at different leaf positions in Mentha piperita L. grown in Mn2+-deficient and control conditions. Under manganese deficiency the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and guaiacol peroxidase (GuaPOX) and the content of ascorbate, chlorophyll, and carotenoid under Mn2+ deficiency were significantly lower than in the control for all leaf positions. SOD activity correlated positively with Mn2+ uptake. Fe2+ uptake was inhibited by Mn2+ deficiency. During early stages of Mn2+ deficiency, M. piperita leaves showed relatively more antioxidant activity and lower LPO. Towards the final stages of the treatment period, comparatively lower SOD, CAT and GuaPOX activity and higher LPO levels accelerated the senescence process.
