uwarunkowania karier
Opis:
Theoretical background: Managerial careers for women are conditioned by many factors. These include factors hindering or blocking their achievement of high positions, such as the gender pay gap, gender stereotypes, the need to reconcile parental and professional roles, lack of solidarity with other women, or lower confidence in men. In turn, a high level of education and skills, a characteristic management style and the impact of team diversity on the organization’s results can be treated as factors stimulating their careers.Purpose of the article: Identification of the perception of middle managers by women, the determinants of their professional careers, taking into account aspects such as the competencies of modern market managers, differences in the style of management of female and male managers, and factors disrupting their career development.Research methods: Partially structured interviews with female managers were carried out in three medium-sized companies, and documents of these companies were analyzed. Questions were asked about the specifics of the work of female managers. An attempt was made to identify factors disrupting their career development. Attention was paid to women’s attitudes towards gender stereotypes in the context of their managerial roles.Main findings: Respondents, women in managerial positions, pointed to the inconvenience that hinders their access to holding top positions. Among the interlocutors there was a belief about the differences between the sexes that affect the professional career of women. As factors differentiating the management style due to gender, they indicated greater care for the quality of relationships compared to men. In addition, they are aware of the essence of their roles and have confirmed that they obtain a high level of satisfaction with their work.

In 1977, Prof. Abraham Zaleznik contrasted managers and leaders. The differences between the two are also evident in Poland, which is confirmed by research presented in brief in the article. These differences should be familiar to managers, especially personnel managers, and they should be taken into account in selecting and developing a managerial staff and in managing competencies.

The purpose of the paper is to develop a model for managing the motivation of managers and ensure its effectiveness. The principles of formation of management model of managers’ work motivation which correspond to the universal system approach to management model of managers’ work motivation and define its basic functions are outlined: a) goal setting, b) assessment and forecasting of the state and efficiency, c) development and decision making, d) planning, e) organizational, f) communication and subordination, g) regulation of the management model of motivation of managers, h) control. The management model of managers’ work motivation of (MMMWM) is formalized in the form of a structural-logical scheme based on a systematic approach and decomposition, which reflects the interaction of subject and object in the process of forming and implementing a system of motivation of managers at the enterprise. The factors for achieving the set goals have been formed, which are divided into internal and external motivators for managing managers’ work motivation. The management model of managers’ work motivation which is presented by the following subsystems is offered: "X" – target subsystem (the management process of managers’ work motivation), "Y" – providing subsystem (factors of rational achievement of the goals), "XY" – providing subsystem (regulatory legal acts, resources), "Z" – management subsystem (reflects the implementation of the general functions of management work motivation on the basis of experience), which are characterized by parameters, indicators, criteria for managing the motivation of managers. According to the method of linear multiple regression, a system of equations was constructed to describe the economic-mathematical model of management motivation at oil and gas enterprises, which after the repeated experiments provided diagnostics of indicators before, during and after the implementation of management motivation model.

Opis:
One of the most fundamental principles which underpins the functioning of Western societies is the gender binary system, based on the eternal division into men and women as well as their social and biological predestination. Critiques of the binary system claim that there is an apparent lack of symmetry between the polar opposites constituting the binary system. The male-female dichotomy appears to be asymmetrical since the binary opposition is viewed as unequal: females are dominated and controlled by males and forced to perform less significant, minor (less valued) social roles. Binarism refers to identity and social roles, as well as to physical attributes of females and males. The consequence of binarism on the realm of physicality is the view that a woman is obliged to constantly improve her attractiveness so that she could be “won over in an impressive way” by “the best possible partner”. The main aim of this article is examination of social anxiety over the effects of women’s emancipation, which is believed to give rise to the masculinization of females, particularly those who have achieved social and professional success, and aspire to (or have already acquired) a high social status, income, or professional position. The theoretical considerations are confronted with results of the qualitative research related to female managers' identity.

Opis:
Leadership of graduate managers has become a focal point of many employers worldwide. Leadership development is in high demand and leadership initiatives are an effective tool for career development in the corporate environment. The objectives of the study were to assess the Transformational Leadership (TL) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) level of graduate managers, and to analyse the relationship between their EI and TL performances at work. The role of gender in leadership was examined. Sixty three graduate managers (33 men, and 30 women) who are following the masters' degree programme were randomly selected from a Sri Lankan university. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire of Bass and Avolio, was used to assess the leadership style performances of the respondents. Genos EI Inventory was used to measure their EI level. Descriptive and inferential analyses of data were conducted using SPSS software. Respondents recorded higher scores for TL performances at work. Respondents' EI levels and TL styles re?ected a difference with regard to their gender. Respondents have scored slightly lower scores for the EI sub-constructs in comparison to the normative figures of Genos EI. The higher fluctuation of Mean values of respondents indicated the volatility of the reasoning ability of respondents. The fact that graduate managers depicted higher scores for progressive leadership styles and lower scores for passive leadership styles augurs well for their career development. Emotional Intelligence of men significantly related with their Transformational leadership style. Study concludes that high Transformational leadership of Sri Lankan graduates managers and manageresses, and the relationship of Transformational Leadership with managers EI as well, could enhance management and production performances in corporate environments.

Opis:
Numerous studies on the economies of socialist countries indicate that one of the main sources of their weakness was the attitudes and behavior of “socialist managers”. Contrary to the predictions (e.g. by Joseph Schumpeter), they were not characterized by entrepreneurship, innovation, the ability to lead changes or the ability to formulate strategies. This was due to the nomenclature system existing in all countries of the Soviet bloc. Nominations, promotions, but also dismissals were at the discretion of party bodies. It was the main source of the communist party’s dominance in the country and the fundamental factor guaranteeing control over all spheres of social and economic life. Determining why the nomenclature system turned out to be dysfunctional requires considering three issues: what were the goals of the communist personnel policy, what methods were used to implement it, and finally who were the people appointed to perform managerial functions in the economy. We will focus our analysis on the management of Polish industry in the years 1945–1956. This is because it was the most important sector of the economy of the People’s Republic of Poland, and the personnel policy mechanisms developed at that time remained valid until the end of the “real socialism” system.

Paradoxes in the management of human capital are the subject of this article. The text contains theory-cognitional part which systematises knowledge about paradoxes in management and empirical part based upon the survey research conducted in the group of 45 Polish managers. The aim of research was the identification of the most important paradoxes in the area of people management in enterprises in the perception of the highest senior staff. Due to the lack of representativeness in the number of participants in experiment, the research had a pilote nature. The results are treated as a starting point to word hypothesis for further and deeper research. The paradoxes in managers’ appraisal are: the necessity of reaching high and measurable effects with simultaneous taking into account humanistic dimension of management on board, building and keeping high level of the engagement of employees loosely related to an employer because of time employment; the necessity to reconcile employee short working time in a company with the provision of access to key information and sensitive organisational knowledge.

Remuneration of executives is a  subject of much debate and controversy. This article analyzes the level of remuneration and tries to correlate it with indicators of the Z-Score and TSR. It has been shown that only in a  few banks there is a  statistically significant relationship between these variables. The controversy may raise (in many cases) due to negative index of directional correlation of these variables, which may indicate that the executive salaries are forming in an irrational way.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This paper focuses on establishing whether investment fund performance is related to managerial characteristics, such as a manager’s gender and professional credentials. Design/methodology/approach – The investigation was conducted on a relatively large study sample covering 275 managers of 98 domestic equity funds operating in Poland in the period 2000-2017. The verification of the hypotheses was based on three groups of research tools, including tests for differences in the mean values and distributions of rates of return in two samples of funds, where a gender and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) were grouping variables, and regression models, where a gender or CFA were dummy factors implemented into asset pricing models. Findings – The obtained results show that there are no disproportions in the performance achieved by funds managed by men and funds (co-)managed by women or managers with or without CFAs. However, the findings related to the latter variable are ambiguous, in particular when regression methods are employed or basic measures of return are used. Research implications/limitations – In order to clarify the influence of some managerial characteristics on fund performance further research in this field is needed. Nevertheless, the results may be of interest to both individual investors and fund families. Originality/value/contribution – To our knowledge, it is the first paper to evaluate the performance of Polish investment funds in relation to managerial characteristics. Moreover, what contributes to the originality of the research is the application of a relatively extensive set of measures of return and the use of a proprietary database with unique variables describing a fund manager’s profile.

Opis:
Personal branding in the last ten years has been gaining significantly in popularity - especially in the business environment (Gehl, 2011; Wee & Brooks, 2010). Meanwhile, the literature still recognizes the need for empirical research on personal branding that examines how various professions experience personal branding. Managers are increasingly aware that the activities they perform as part of personal branding affect how the organization they represent is perceived. The aim of this article is to identify the process of building personal brands by managers. To achieve this goal, a literature review and qualitative research were carried out in the form of individual in-depth interviews. The choice of the research method is justified by the subject of the analysis. The study covered a group of nine people with at least two years of experience in a managerial position and employed in service companies located in Greater Poland. As a result of the conducted research, it was found that personal branding is perceived as a multi-stage process in which social media is credited with increasing use. In addition, organizations only support building personal brands by managers and executives. The article is a field for further exploration of publications and research.
