Opis:
The paper presents the concept of masculinity within the non-binary and multilayered model of gender/sex traits. Within that model, masculinity is not a simple idea, but rather is fragmented into many traits in diverse clusters. The experience of transgender men and men with intersex traits suggests that self-determined male gender identity is a mega trait that is sufficient for being a man. However, masculinity is not only psychological, as the content of the psychological feeling of being a man refers to social norms about how men should be and behave. And male coded traits are described as traits that frequently occur within the group of people identifying as men. Therefore, I claim that there are two interdependent ideas in the concept of masculinity: the self-determined male gender identity (first-person perspective) and a cluster of traits coded as male (third-person perspective). Within non-binary model the interplay between the two interdependent ideas allows to include borderline masculinities.

INTRODUCTION: According to modern knowledge, we distinguish many factors conditioning human health. Among them, the most important is lifestyle. During the university education period, the first independent attempts and decisions are made, not only those related to life choices, but also decisions related to health behaviours that will have a consequence in adult life. The aim of the study was to assess the positive health behaviours among students of Lublin universities and their selected determinants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted using the PAPI method from March to May 2017 among 410 male students. The study employed the Positive Health Behaviour Scale (PHBS) for adults and sociodemographic questions. The results of the study were subjected to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The obtained results of the study carried out among students using PHBS allowed the authors to state that the respondents obtained the highest result in Subscale IV. “Safety” (2.46 ± 0.59), subsequently in Subscale III. “Relaxation and behaviours connected with psychosocial health” (1.67 ± 0.53). The lowest rated subscale was Subscale I. “Nutrition” (1.28 ± 0.52). Statistical analysis showed that age, the place of residence, place of residence during studies, field of studies, occurrence of cancer in the family and self-assessment of health condition determines the assessment of positive health behaviours (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The ranking of positive health behaviours among male students of Lublin universities is as follows: “Safety”, “Relaxation and behaviours connected with psychosocial health”, “Physical activity”, “Taking care of one’s body” and “Nutrition”.
WSTĘP: Zgodnie ze współczesną wiedzą wyróżniamy wiele czynników warunkujących zdrowie człowieka. Wśród nich najważniejszy to styl życia. Najniżej oceniono subskalę I „Żywienie” (1,28 ± 0,52). Przeprowadzona analiza statystyczna wykazała, że wiek, miejsce stałego zamieszkania, miejsce zamieszkania podczas studiów, kierunek studiów, występowanie nowotworów w rodzinie oraz samoocena stanu zdrowia determinują ocenę pozytywnych zachowań zdrowotnych (p < 0,05). WNIOSKI: Ranking pozytywnych zachowań zdrowotnych wśród studentów płci męskiej lubelskich uczelni kształtuje się następująco: „Zachowanie bezpieczeństwa”, „Sen, odpoczynek i zdrowie psychiczne”, „Aktywność fizyczna”, „Dbałość o ciało” oraz „Żywienie”.

Opis:
The studies of differences in language used by males and females appear mainly to have been focused on the spoken word and rarely on writing. This paper examines some linguistic differences that exist in male and female writing styles of Arabic novels. Some classes of lexical and syntactic features that identify the author’s gender are specified. The paper finds significant differences in the frequent use of some features such as colour, tag questions, verb vs. noun in initiating paragraphs, slang, taboo and euphemistic terms. inparticular, males tend to use many more nouns in initial paragraphs compared to females who tend to use fewer of this category. Females are more conservative in using sex-related words whether implicitly or explicitly. Females generally speaking seem to be more atten-tive and more likely to pay specific attention to detail, which in turn influences their style. Finally, anoticeable correlation between the characteristics of male-female writing and the literary genre (novel) is demonstrated. The source material consists of two modern novels written by amale and afemale, who are native speakers of Arabic and considered as canonical figures by some Arab and Jordanian critics.

Nursing is a greatly feminised profession, especially in Poland. Low salaries are one of the reasons for the deficiency of nursing staff. Nursing is mainly associated with unprofessional housework that women traditionally performed free of charge. In addition, the necessity to enrol in higher education and the work environment discourage those who want to pursue studies in this profession. Increasing the number of men in nursing may improve this situation. For this purpose, the profession should be actively promoted to young people, thus breaking gender stereotypes. The reason for reluctance of men to join the nursing profession is discussed in the article.

The article is an attempt at addressing the problem of "masculinity" as a historically privileged category in the social and philosophical tradition. In the dichotomous gender system, femininity is usually valued as aesthetic quality, while masculinity stands as an ethical value. This distinction, suggesting the subordinated and disadvantaged position of "femininity" derives from ancient philosophy and biblical tradition and was strengthened not only by philosophical writings but also by symbolic, legal, economic and social practices. By sketching a review of positions and confronting the stereotypical image of "masculinity" with the complex reality of multiple forms of masculine expressions, the article brings the situation of "masculinity" in the world organized by the phallogocentric symbolic order.

Opis:
The paper discusses transformation of professional identity of individuals who have chosen work activity that is not traditional for their gender. Participants of our research are male social workers in Lithuania. The study on change of professional identity of male social workers presented in this article has revealed that the process of becoming a social worker among males is a sequence of complex decisions and experiences accompanied by critical incidents and changes in their life trajectories and learning careers. Trajectories of educational experience and life events of the research participants have revealed the choice in favour of non-traditional occupation as a defeat of traditional gender division of labour by opposing to “normality” – by undergoing and overcoming the crisis. One of interesting aspects of analysis is the issue of experiences occurring in the course of deviation from standardized, predetermined and preset life journey, i.e. normative biography. Such a complexity is caused by ideal norms of hegemonic masculinity that frame actual social structures and are introduced into the processes of socialization and habituation with the aim to form dominant masculine habitus. Analysis of biographical narratives of male social workers have disclosed learning careers and at the same time the balancing of the males between the normative trajectory of masculine behaviour and striving to find their own “self ”.

Opis:
The paper considers male and female images in the Yakut fairy tales as a component of cultural programming of gender behavior in a tribal society. The analysis of the Yakut fairy tales reveals that the main male characters whole being integral are represented as a rule by three types – in the image of heroes, hunters and poor men. Female images are more diverse, among them there are girls of the Upper World and udagans (shaman women), endowed with magical powers and the gift of transformation; girls of the Middle World, who can be both passive and active characters; the third group of female images is represented by old women, who are often embodied in the collective image of the old woman Simekhsin. The results of the analysis suggest that the masculine images correspond to the stereotypical male behavior patterns in the patriarchate society, while the feminine images may deviate from the accepted gender stereotypes for various reasons.

Opis:
Emotions in humans are subjective conscious experience characterized by psycho-physiological expressions and behavioral reactions. It may act as tool, if positively identified by complementing and enriching job performance but if negatively understood can ruin feelings and be a disaster. Emotions in healthcare organizations are important to be taken care of because in the service exchange process emotions of both the service provider and the receiver are directly involved. Although caring and curing patient by these employees is a professional activity but still, the empathetic and sympathetic behavior shown by these professionals influences their performance and success in hospital industry. Moreover, the behavior shown by these employees in the workplace is often discriminated on the basis of their gender as it influences the performance of health professionals. Based on above backdrop, the objective of the current study is to assess whether there exist difference in emotional intelligence of healthcare employees in hospitals with respect to their gender. A standardized questionnaire was used to conduct the study among 300 employees in hospitals with the help of scale developed by Hyde, Pethe and Dhar (2002). Data was analyzed through SPSS and results indicated that the level of emotional intelligence among females is higher than male employees.

The aim of the presented analysis is to show the exponents of excitement in the online genre – father’s blogs. Men’s parenting blogs reflect changes in the field of parenting, where father begins to appear – as an active and participating. This role goes beyond the stereotype of the male and the previous experience of fathers – both media and private. Therefore, the paternal narrative in blogs is for linguists valuable research material, that shows, among others, different aspects of male emotionality and ways to verbalize it. The emotional component of father`s image is created by means expressing feelings (not naming them), polyfunctional, used in unusual combinations and contexts.

Background: This study was based on gender differences in male and female trained tennis players. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to determine the extent that physical training could minimize the gender differences in lung capacities in trained tennis players aged 14–17 years. Material and methods: The participants were ten male and seven female lawn tennis players, with a mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of 15.5 ± 1.27 and 14.43 ± 1.13 years, respectively. Physical characteristics and lung volumes were measured on the same day for each participant. Data were presented as mean ± SD, and Student’s t-test to compare the measured variables was performed. Results: Differences between genders were insignificant in terms of age (years), weight (kg), body fat (%), lean body mass (kg) and chest circumference (cm). However, height (cm), and W/H ratio were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in male tennis players in comparison to female players. Insignificant differences were found for TV (L), SVC (L), FVC (L), FEV1 (L), FEV1/FVC (%), FEF25-75% (L/s), PEF (L/s) and MVV (L/min). The only significant difference (p < 0.05) in lung function measures between male and female trained tennis players was for PIF (L/s). Conclusions: Male tennis players were taller than female tennis players of same age range, which might be advantageous for males while playing. Insignificant differences between male and female players in the various lung variables measured indicated that the influence of height and gender differences could be minimized by proper training during puberty. A significantly higher PIF in male players indicated stronger and more powerful inspiratory muscle activity compared with female tennis players.

Opis:
The article deals with the different types of women and men in the Czech advertisements. The author starts from the premise that in order to increase the effectiveness of advertising, it is essential for advertisers to select suitable means of expression primarily on the basis of the needs or weaknesses of the target group (the segment of the population at which the product is mainly aimed, i.e. the group which is required to start buying the product), and in verbal terms, on the particular sociolect of the target group. The author’s research leads her to claim that it is actually the target group that plays the decisive role in the selection of advertising strategies. Women and men are not only target groups, but also useful models for visual and audiovisual advertising. The way in which people are used in advertising greatly reflects the stereotypes current in a particular society and at a particular time. In this sense advertising acts as a mirror of society - of its behaviours, value system, systems of relationships, and moral principles. The author analyses individual cases in which advertisers depict women and men. She classifies various types of women and men used in Czech mass media advertising, noting the verbal means, which differ depending on the target group.

Jednak wciąż brakuje ostatecznej kontestacji tematu, a w szczególności doniosłości i znaczenia mężczyzn w zawodach sfeminizowanych i w ogóle – osób o odmiennej płci w zawodach stypizowanych.
The role and placement of a male librarian in the library is a phenomenon, which is neither new, nor particularly difficult for a researcher in this field. Many authors of various publications have established that role, described the context, examined the form and diagnosed the problem. However, there is still lack of definitive contestation of the subject, in particular that of significance and purpose of men in feminized professions – and, in general, persons of opposite genders in categorized professions. Some associations encourage us to raise questions and search for answers – are such persons actually “privileged” on the promotion line, or even assigned – owing to their gender – to occupy management positions. An important question that remains concerns the significance of such persons in creating a new type of employee - a man adhering to his gender, but with mental attributes specific to both males and females.

The paper addresses issues related to language and gender, and discusses research on the frequency of adjectives in language of male and female characters in a TV drama series “Homeland”. The empirical part of the study uses as its theoretical background the classic works in the field (Lakoff 1975; Butler 1990; Meyerhoff 2006), which identify gender specific language features and define factors that determine male-female language differences. The research was conducted manually, with minor help of electronic tools, on a personally created language corpus consisting of dialogue lines from the TV show. The results clearly show that the frequency of adjectives in female speech is higher than in male speech in the studied corpus.
