Opis:
We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the variational formulation of the Maxwell-Boussinesq approximation problem. Some further regularity in W1,2+δ, δ > 0, is obtained for the weak solutions. The shape sensitivity analysis by the boundary variations technique is performed for the weak solutions. As a result, the existence of the strong material derivatives for the weak solutions of the problem is shown. The result can be used to establish the shape differentiability for a broad class of shape functionals for the models of Fourier-Navier-Stokes flows under the electromagnetic field.

This paper is concerned with a numerical solutions of two-component magnetohydrodynamic equations. While a hyperbolic system of wave equations admits a shock solution as a result of the selenoidality condition the MHD equations are not strictly hyperbolic. As a consequence of that these equations require special numerical treatment. An application of a resulting numerical code to a problem of solar wind interaction with the ionosphere of the planet Venus is presented.

In the present study, we have investigated entropy generation on a magnetohydrodynamic fluid flow and heat transfer over a stretching cylinder with a porous medium in slip flow regime. A uniform heat source and radiation is also considered. Similarity transformation has been applied for making an ordinary differential equation from nonlinear governing partial differential equations. The numerical solution for the set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations has been obtained by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme together with the shooting method. The effects of pertinent parameters such as the magnetic field parameter, permeability parameter, slip parameter, Prandtl number and radiation parameter on the fluid velocity distribution, temperature distribution, entropy generation and Bejan number are discussed graphically.

Opis:
We present a new version of the Athena code, which solves magnetohydrodynamic equations in two-dimensional space. This new implementation, which we have named Athena-GPU, uses CUDA architecture to allow the code execution on Graphical Processor Unit (GPU). The Athena-GPU code is an unofficial, modified version of the Athena code which was originally designed for Central Processor Unit (CPU) architecture. We perform numerical tests based on the original Athena-CPU code and its GPU counterpart to make a performance analysis, which includes execution time, precision differences and accuracy. We narrowed our tests and analysis only to double precision floating point operations and two-dimensional test cases. Our comparison shows that results are similar for both two versions of the code, which confirms correctness of our CUDA-based implementation. Our tests reveal that the Athena-GPU code can be 2 to 15-times faster than the Athena-CPU code, depending on test cases, the size of a problem and hardware configuration.

The mathematical model of heat generation and dissipation during thermal energy transmission employing nanoparticles in a Newtonian medium is investigated. Dimensionless boundary layer equations with correlations for titanium dioxide, copper oxide, and aluminium oxide are solved by the finite element method. Parameters are varied to analyze their impact on the flow fields. Various numerical experiments are performed consecutively to explore the phenomenon of thermal performance of the combination fluid. A remarkable enhancement in thermal performance is noticed when solid structures are dispersed in the working fluid. The Biot number determines the convective nature of the boundary. When the Biot number is increased, the fluid temperature decreases significantly. Among copper oxide, aluminium oxide, and titanium oxide nanoparticles, copper oxide nanoparticles are found to be the most effective thermal enhancers.

Opis:
The problem of boundary layer flow and heat transfer of nanofluids over nonlinear stretching of a flat sheet in the presence of a magnetic field and chemical reaction is investigated numerically. In this paper, a new locally modified single-phase model for the analysis is introduced. In this model, the effective viscosity, density and thermal conductivity of the solid-liquid mixtures (nanofluids) which are commonly utilized in the homogenous single-phase model, are locally combined with the prevalent single-phase model. Similarity transformation is used to convert the governing equations into three coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. These equations depend on five local functions of the nanoparticle volume fraction viz., local viscosity ratio, magnetic, Prandtl, Brownian motion and thermophoresis functions. The equations are solved using Newton’s method and a block tridiagonal matrix solver. The results are compared to the prevalent single-phase model. In addition, the effect of important governing parameters on the velocity, temperature, volume fraction distribution and the heat and mass transfer rates are examined.

Opis:
In this paper, a numerical study of forced convection on a backward facing step containing a single-finned fixed cylinder has been performed, using a ferrofluid and external magnetic field with different inclinations. The partial differential equations, which determine the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy, were solved using the finite element scheme based on Galerkin’s method. The analysis of heat transfer characteristics by forced convection was made by taking different values of the Reynolds number (Re between 10 and 100), Hartmann number (Ha between 0 and 100), nanoparticles concentration (φ between 0 and 0.1) and magnetic field inclination (γ between 0° and 90°); also, several fin positions α [0°–180°] were taken in the counter clockwise direction by a step of 5. After analysing the results, we concluded that Hartmann number, nanoparticles concentration, Reynolds number and magnetic field angles have an influence on the heat transfer rate. However, the fin position on the cylinder has a big impact on the Nusselt number and therefore on heat transfer quality. The best position of the fin is at (α = 150°), which gives the best Nusselt number and therefore the best heat trans-fer, but the fin position at (α = 0°) remains an unfavourable case that gives the lowest Nusselt values.

Opis:
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mixed convection flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid in a vertical channel is analyzed analytically. A magnetic field of uniform strength is applied perpendicular to the planes of the channel walls. The fluid is acted upon by a periodic variation of the pressure gradient in the vertically upward direction. The temperature of one of the plates is non-uniform and the temperature difference of the walls of the channel is high enough to induce heat transfer due to radiation. The fluid and the channel rotate in unison with an angular velocity about the axis normal to the plates of the channel. An exact analytical solution of the problem is obtained. Two cases of small and large rotation have been considered to assess the effects of different parameters involved in the flow problem. The velocity field, the amplitude and the phase angle of the shear stress are shown graphically and discussed in detail. During analysis it is found that the flow problem studied by Makinde and Mhone (2005) is incorrect physically and mathematically.

The main interest of the present investigation is to generate exact solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations for the incompressible Newtonian viscous electrically conducting fluid flow motion and stability due to disks moving towards each other or in opposite directions with a constant velocity. Making use of the analytic solution, the description of possible conditions of motion is based on the exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Both stationary and transient cases have been considered. The stability of motion is analyzed for different initial perturbations. Different types of stability were found according to whether the disks moved towards or away from each other.

Opis:
A fluid flow and heat transfer analysis of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian power law fluid flowing over a non-linear stretching surface in the presence of a transverse magnetic field taking into consideration viscous dissipation effects is investigated. The stretching velocity, the temperature and the transverse magnetic field are assumed to vary in a power-law with the distance from the origin. The flow is induced due to an infinite elastic sheet which is stretched in its own plane. The governing equations are reduced to non-linear ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transformations. By using quasi-linearization techniques first linearize the non linear momentum equation is linearized and then the coupled ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The numerical solution is found to be dependent on several governing parameters, including the magnetic field parameter, power-law index, Eckert number, velocity exponent parameter, temperature exponent parameter, modified Prandtl number and heat source/sink parameter. A systematic study is carried out to illustrate the effects of these parameters on the fluid velocity and the temperature distribution in the boundary layer. The results for the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are tabulated and discussed.

The evolution of linearized perturbations in a magnetohydrodynamic shear flow is studied using the initial value problem approach. Here the resulting equation in time posed by using the Fourier transform is solved for the Fourier amplitudes for modeled boundary layer for different initial disturbances. The shear flow prototype here is a piecewise linear approximation of a magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer. The initial disturbances that are considered are a point source of the field of transverse velocity and magnetic field. Solutions are obtained for small values of Alfve’n velocity. The velocity plots are drawn for different values of Alfve’n velocity.

Problemy ekologii w obecnych czasach stanowią priorytet w wielu dziedzinach nauki i przemysłu.
At present ecological challenges have become a priority in many areas of science and industry. Among them is the automotive industry, which saw the introduction of stricter emission limits on harmful chemical compounds released to the environment in the form of exhaust gases. As a result, cars made in the past few years have been fitted with a pollution-reducing system known as the catalytic converter. The device uses active elements, predominantly the platinum group metals, to convert harmful substances, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, into less harmful compounds; carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen.
