Opis:
The communities of benthic macroinvertebrates, living in the estuary of Oued Souss (Agadir Bay, Morocco), were studied in parallel with the changes that this ecosystem had underwent after the stopping of pollution, caused by untreated wastewater discharge which occurred in November 2002. Three campaigns were undertaken during the summer season. Two of them were carried out while the estuary was receiving wastewater discharge in 2001 and 2002. The 2003 campaign was carried out after the cessation of the pollution. The intertidal macrobenthic fauna shows a similar faunal composition for both seasons during the period when the ecosystem was receiving wastewater discharge. During this period, Hydrobia ulvae was the dominant species, followed by Hediste diversicolor and Scrobicularia plana in decreasing order. In 2003, the number of individuals harvested was significantly larger compared to the period when the ecosystem received wastewater. For the dominance of species, H. diversicolor was dominanted, followed by H. ulvae, Cerastoderma edule, and S. plana in decreasing order. However, in both periods: before and after the end of wastewater discharge, the phylum of mollusks is dominant, followed by that of Annelids and Crustaceans. The study of the coenotic affinity between settlements of different radials allowed us to separate 2–3 groups of radials in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and 3 groups after stopping discharges in the estuary. The specific richness was greater in the year following the end of discharges (22 species in 2003 instead of 14 found during the pollution period: 2001–2002). The longitudinal distribution of the species living in this site in 2001 and 2002 became wider in 2003 and average biomass, determined by the study of the ash-free dry weight, became clearly greater (20.46 g/m2 in 2003; and 15.54 g/ m2 or 15.84 g/ m2 in 2001 or 2002 respectively). This investigation allowed us to acquire a qualitative (species list, species richness) and quantitative (abundance, biomass, species density) database of intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Oued Souss estuary. It represents a reference state. It responds to the requests for information about the quality of the environment immediately after the cessation of wastewater discharge and could serve as a basis for conducting impact studies later.

Opis:
The palaeoecology and palaeoenvironments of the lower–middle Miocene succession in Gebel Gharra, NW of Suez, Egypt, are interpreted, on the basis of a detailed study of microfacies, trace fossils, and macrofaunal benthic assemblages. This succession consists of a lower siliciclastic part (the Gharra Formation) and a carbonate-dominated upper part (the Geniefa Formation), corresponding to a general transgression-regression cycle. Facies characteristics indicate depositional palaeoenvironments, ranging from supratidal, lagoonal, to shoal settings on an inner ramp that was influenced proximally by clastic input. At least seven ichnotaxa were recorded in the lower Miocene Gharra Formation, representing suites of the Skolithos ichnofacies. Among them, the ichnogenus Polykladichnus is recorded for the first time in Egypt. The macrobenthic taxa identified in 13 statistical samples are grouped into five assemblages (A–E) that are described and interpreted as the remains of communities. The faunal distribution and trophic structure of most of these assemblages confirm the existence of relatively stable and low-stress conditions. However, the trophic structure of the assemblages reflects the influence of particular environmental parameters, the dissolution of aragonitic shells and/or sample-size effects. Environmental parameters, controlling the distribution of trace and/or body fossils, include substrate consistency, bathymetry, water energy, productivity level, rate of sedimentation, salinity, and oxygen availability. The results of integrated lithoand biofacies analysis confirm that the succession studied was deposited in different environmental settings, providing perfect conditions for the occurrence and preservation of trace-fossil and macrobenthos assemblages.

Opis:
On nine beaches and two transects in the surf zone along the Dutch coast the presence of benthic macrofauna was studied in relation to basic abiotic characteristics. According to Short’s classification system, Dutch beaches are mesotidal and dissipative (Ω = 8.6), and the RTR is low (1.52–1.27), which means that they are not tide-dominated. BSI ranged from 1.4 to 1.1 for the northern and western Dutch coasts respectively and had an overall value of 1.2. The rates of exposure of the beaches varied between 8 and 12, and are therefore regarded as sheltered to moderately exposed. The Dutch beaches display a geographical trend in beach types. Those of the Wadden Sea islands in the northern part of the Netherlands are dissipative, flat, fine-grained, and host high densities of many species of benthic macrofauna. The beaches along the western Dutch coast are less dissipative, steeper, with a higher mean grain size; the species diversity and abundance there are lower. Species diversity and abundance on the beaches increase from the high- to the low-water line. The maximum number of species was found between 0 and –1 m relative to the mean tidal level. The abundance peaks just above the mean tidal level, while the biomass reaches a maximum at the mean tidal level. Species diversity and abundance are low in the surf zone, but increase towards deeper water. Species numbers are high and the abundance is very high in the trough between the two bars. The relation between the diversity and abundance of macrobenthic species on the one hand, and the sediment composition, water column depth, and position between the bars on the other show a clear pattern of zonation for the beach, surf zone and near-shore: (1) a supralittoral zone with insects and air-breathing crustaceans, (2) a midshore zone, with intertidal species, (3) a lower shore zone, whose species extend into the shallow surf zone, and (4) a zone of sublittoral fauna in the trough between the two breaker bars within the surf zone.

Opis:
A detailed ecological study was conducted for three years (2001–03) on a 5 km stretch of well-developed coral reef facing an industrial site in the southernmost section of the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. The degree of modification associated with the prevailing ecological factors was assessed with respect to species diversity and abundance of the major groups of the macrobenthic community: corals, bivalves, hydrozoans, echinoderms, sponges and macroalgae. Three locations of two depths each – 6 and 12 m – were selected and surveyed using the visual census point-intercept method. The actual area of the survey covered about 2250 m2. Macrobenthic communities occurring close to the industrial jetty were characterized by low diversity and the obvious dominance of soft coral (16–30% cover). In the deep transects (12 m) hard coral cover was higher than that in the shallow transects (30–55%). Correlation analyses indicated that species richness increased with increasing distance from the industrial jetty. Species richness of other macrobenthos was also higher as depth increased. The results revealed that the distribution and abundance of coral, echinoderms, hydrozoans and macroalgae were correlated with the relative importance of bottom modification within the various locations in the entire study area. However, no distinct influence of location or depth on the identities of most macrobenthic species was indicated.
