This study presents a customized root cause analysis approach to investigate the reasons, provide improvements measures for the cost overruns, and schedule slippage in papermachine-building projects. The proposed approach is an analytical-survey approach that uses both actual technical data and experts’ opinions. Various analysis tools are embedded in the approach including: data collection and clustering, interviews with experts, 5-Whys, Pareto charts, cause and effect diagram, and critical ratio control charts. The approach was implemented on seven projects obtained from a leading international paper machine supplier. As a result, it was found that the main causes behind cost and schedule deviations are products’ related; including technical accidents in the Press section, damaged parts, design issues, optimization of the machine and missing parts. Based on the results, prevention measures were perceived.

Opis:
The selection of a mining machine is a multiple-attribute problem that involves the consideration of numerous parameters of various origins. A common task in the mining industry is to select the best machine among several alternatives, which are frequently described both with numerical variables as well as linguistic variables. Numerical variables are mostly related to the technical characteristics of the machines, which are available in detail in most cases. On the other hand, some equally important parameters such as price, reliability, support for service and spare parts, operating cost, etc., are not available at the required level for various reasons; hence, these can be considered uncertain information. For this reason, such information is described with linguistic variables. This paper presents research related to overcoming this problem by using grey theory for selecting a proper mining machine. Grey theory is a well-known method used for multiple-attribute selection problems that involves a system in which parts of the necessary information are known and parts are unknown.

A lot of horizontal boring mills moving on horizontal guide ways using traditional solution type toothed bar and pinion still work in the machine industry. This kind of drive shows errors in positioning caused by clearance in meshing between teeth of toothed bar and pinion. The existing clearance increases with the working time of the machine as a result of wear of the parts mating with each other. Inter-teeth clearance has a negative effect on the accuracy of the workpiece being machined. An effective way to improve the positioning of the machine while driving on the guides is to mount the second pinion to the drive. The principle of the second pinion operation is so that if the first pinion has contact with the tooth of the toothed bar on one side, the second pinion always contacts the tooth of the toothed bar on the other side. This arrangement of both pinions eliminates the negative impact of the inter-teeth clearance, and thus contributes to improving the accuracy of the machine tool.

Opis:
Article focus of the disruptive character of technological innovations brought by Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), with its unprecedented scale and scope, and exponential speed of incoming innovations, described from the point view of ‘unintended consequences’ (cross cutting impact of disruptive technologies across many sectors and aspects of human life). With integration of technology innovations emerging in number of fields including advanced robotics, pervasive computing, artificial intelligence, nano- and bio- technologies, additive and smart manufacturing, Forth Industrial Revolution introduce new ways in which technology becomes embedded not only within the society, economy and culture, but also within human body and mind (described by integration of technologies, collectively referred to as cyber-physical systems). At the forefront of digital transformation, based on cyber physical systems, stands Industry 4.0, referring to recent technological advances, where internet and supporting technologies (embedded systems) are serving as framework to integrate physical objects, human actors, intelligent machines, production lines and processes across organizational boundaries to form new kind of intelligent, networked value chain, called smart factory. Article presents broader context of ‘disruptive changes (innovations)’ accompanying 4IR, that embrace both economical perspective of ‘broader restructuring’ of modern economy and society (described in second part of the article as transition from second to third and forth industrial revolution), and technological perspective of computer and informational science with advances in pervasive computing, algorithms and artificial intelligence (described in third part of article with different stages of web development : web 1.0, web 2.0, web 3.0, web 4.0). What’s more important, article presents hardly ever described in literature, psychological and philosophical perspective, more or less subtle reconfiguration made under the influence of these technologies, determining physical (body), psychological (mind) and philosophical aspect of human existence (the very idea of what it means to be the human), fully depicted in the conclusion of the article. The core element (novelty) is the attempt to bring full understanding and acknowledgment of disruptive innovations’, that “change not only of the what and the how things are done, but also the who we are”, moving beyond economical or technological perspective, to embrace also psychological and philosophical one.

In the early nineteenth century bookbinding work was done by traditional craftsmen’s methods. Workshop equipment and technology has not developed from the late Renaissance. In the nineteenth century new equipment and machinery were built to speed up the process o binding books and to allow larger runs. New technologies have led to changes in work organization and the creation of larger plants. The process of bookbinding mechanization in Poland was based mainly on German equipment and proceeded with a slight delay from the German bookbinding. Due to the small market orders, only a few binding workshops developed into medium or small factories. Bookbinding works were also created by printers and publishers. Full conversion of the bookbinding from outwork into the industry took place after World War II in the state binderies, which are now branches of printing plants.

Opis:
Science - research transformation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has a number of colours and shadows, many dimensions including technical, social, community, financial, economic and civilization. This transformation has many wide development roads but also numerable pitfalls and traps. It does not take place solely at the level of scientific and technical progress and innovation. It preliminarily takes place in a complex sociopolitical-economic context, narrowed for simplification as social acceptance and education only. Such acceptance, for example expressed simply by demand and market popularity, for simple items supplemented by useful functions, such as an iron that recognizes the type of fabric and matches its work accordingly, a completely autonomous vacuum cleaner, etc., is trivial. We aim at much deeper relations of IoT with society. If IoT were only adding such functionalities, it would not be worth the time to consider it here. IoT causes a lot of confusion for much more important reasons in many areas of life. Somewhere further on the potential paths of IoT development, it has been noted with interest, but also with anxiety, the possibility of its empowerment as local but also global, superintendent surveillance system, gathering enormous amounts of information, creating knowledge and making autonomous decisions. Potential subjectivity must include such attributes as acquiting from the creator, autonomy, consciousness, morality and further building by the society the whole legal system around the new entity. It will not be a single entity, it will be a whole virtual society, with electronic people. The consequences can be far-reaching and appear as an inevitable option on such a scale for the first time in the history of our human society. Overcoming certain barriers recognized by us may mean that the intelligence and consciousness are not only attributes of the human biological mind. Such reasoning, not without a reason, encounters strong resistance. However, there is a fundamental difference between the opposition to some genetic research and the potential modification of man himself, and the opposition to machine building, a system of superintendence that far exceeds the possibilities of a single man and of entire societies.

Opis:
In many discourses, popular as well as scientific, it is suggested that the "massive" use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Machine Learning (ML), and reaching the point of "singularity" through so-called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and Artificial Super-Intelligence (ASI), will completely exclude humans from decision making, resulting in total dominance of machines over human race. Speaking in terms of manufacturing systems, it would mean that the intelligence and total automation would be achieved (once the humans are excluded). The hypothesis presented in this paper is that there is a limit of AI/ML autonomy capacity, and more concretely, the ML algorithms will be not able to become totally autonomous and, consequently, the human role will be indispensable. In the context of the question, the authors of this paper introduce the notion of the manufacturing singularity and present an intelligent machine architecture towards the manufacturing singularity, arguing that the intelligent machine will always be human dependent. In addition, concerning the manufacturing, the human will remain in the centre of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and in Industry 4.0. The methodology to support this argument is inductive, similarly to the methodology applied in a number of texts found in literature, and based on computational requirements of inductive inference based machine learning. The argumentation is supported by several experiments that demonstrate the role of human within the process of machine learning. Based on the exposed considerations, a generic architecture of intelligent CPS, with embedded ML functional modules in multiple learning loops, is proposed in order to evaluate way of use of ML functionality in the context of CPS. Similar to other papers found in literature, due to the (informal) inductive methodology applied, considering that this methodology does not provide an absolute proof in favour of, or against, the hypothesis defined, the paper represents a kind of position paper. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part a review of argumentation from literature in favour of and against the thesis on the human role in future was presented, as well as the concept of the manufacturing singularity was introduced. Furthermore, an intelligent machine architecture towards the manufacturing singularity was proposed, arguing that the intelligent machine will be always human dependent and, concerning the manufacturing, the human will remain in the centre. The argumentation is based on the phenomenon related to computational machine learning paradigm, as intrinsic feature of the AI/ML1, through the inductive inference based ML algorithms, whose effectiveness is conditioned by the human participation. In the second part, an architecture of the Cyber-Physical (Production) Systems (CPPS) with multiple learning loops is presented, together with a set of experiments demonstrating the indispensable human role. Finally, a discussion of the problem from the manufacturing community point of view on future of human role in Industry 4.0 as the environment for advanced AI/ML applications is registered.
