Opis:
In 2018, members of the social community „Our memory” and the Belarusian Historical Society in Białystok, after many years of searching, found in the village cemetery of the Orthodox parish of St. St. Peter and Paul in Malesze, the remains of the destroyed and forgotten grave of Maria Pietruczuk. In 2020, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church included her among the Martyred Saints of Chełm and Podlasie. She is the Saint of the Orthodox Church. The article presents the ideological, theological, architectural and iconographic premises and conditionings for creating the design of a new monument to St. Martyrs of Mary. The aim is to provide a worthy form of Her eternal rest, memory and prayer of the faithful. The idea of building the monument and its design were blessed by His Eminence Sawa, the Orthodox Metropolitan of Warsaw and the whole of Poland. The form of the monument refers to the temple open to the heavens. It is a system of 4 symbolic forms: a cross, an altar apse, a sarcophagus and a ambona-analogion, symbolically representing: Golgotha, the Tomb of Resurrection of the Jesus Christ and the Mary Mother of God (hierathejon), a reliquary and the stone moved away from the Tomb and Cenacle. The sequential juxtaposition of these forms and their theological and cosmological meaning tries to strengthen the spirit of this place. It builds a synthetic symbolic image of the cemetery temple in search of its path of the faithful’s eternal pilgrimage to salvation.

Opis:
The article concentrate on several aspects related to the person of Saint Thecla. One of the most important issues is the presentation of Thecla as historical figure and her role – a female Saint equal to the apostles – in the history of Christianity. Another aspect of the considerations is the searching for this saint woman iconography based on the analysis of the oldest surviving examples in comparison with the content of the hagiographic “Acts of Paul and Thecla”, which were written in the 2nd and 3rd centuries after Christ. The considerations were used in the development of an iconographic pattern, which contains historiographic premises of presenting the first martyr Saint Thecla on the Deacon’s Doors into the orthodox church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Topilec village.

Opis:
In this essay the author juxtaposes two late fourth-century versions of the legend of the virgin martyr Agnes. According to the first one, presented by Damase and Ambrose, Agnes dies in the flames of fire. Prudentius introduces new details which were credited to the generation after Ambrose: the exposure in a place of ill repute, the miraculous preservation of her purity, and finally, the death by sword. Prudentius, in his poem, which is  much longer than the Ambrosian hymn, adjusted a lot of  motifs of virgin martyrdom  to a different form of literary expression. In the course of the analysis of Prudentius’ poem there can be extracted the following motifs: the saint’s name, the age,  the strength, the patience and perseverance in suffering, the refutation of pagan gods, the defence of virginity, the double crown as a prize for saving chastity and martyrdom, the mystic marriage—Agnes as a bride of Christ, the patron saint, the miracles through the intercession of the saint.  The poet’s hymn has become paradigmatic. It provided the inspiration for his successive writers, sometimes modifying or adding to the individual threads. So intense, throughout the history, the use of themes contained in the hymn XIV provides not only a recognition, which was given to its author, but also the wealth of spiritual experiences learned from reading the text. To some extent, the motifs of virgin martyrdom described in this essay evaluate and order the idea of the hymn, which is based on quite uncertain source material. The use of popular motifs makes Prudentius’ hymn of the model for the work of its kind in early Christian literature.
