    Since mid-17th century a new practice can be observed, concerning ornamentation of title pages of the books of inscription of the Crown. Two such ornamented sheets remain from the time when Jerzy Ossoliński held the office of the chancellor. The extant sheets complement the Chancellor’s political agenda, presented in his thanksgiving speeches, delivered upon receiving the seal. This is an example of using the crown chancery to promote political ideas. Additionally, this practice is aligned with the belief that the image is inextricably linked with the text; at the same time, it is a manifestation of Ossoliński’s ambition and hubris

    The article presents works on the edition of the Crown Metrica in the form of abstracts in Polish, in accordance with the editorial rules and requirements established in 1999. The books of this source series contain entries of documents issued on behalf of the king regarding all matters in which the decision belonged to the king. Thirty five documents issued by the predecessors of King Sigismund III Vasa have been entered here, inserted, summarized or only mentioned. Book no. 139 is the fourth of six books of the lesser chancellery of Jan Tarnowski, covering 430 entries, almost exclusively in Latin. Their largest number falls to March, which is the period of the Sejm session. The edition has been supplemented with footnotes and an index.
    Artykuł referuje prace prowadzone nad edycją Metryki Koronnej w formie regestów w języku polskim, zgodnie z zasadami ustalonymi w 1999 r. Księgi tej serii źródłowej zawierają wpisy dokumentów wystawionych w imieniu króla dotyczących wszelkich spraw, w których decyzja należała do króla. Zostało tu oblatowanych, inserowanych, streszczonych lub tylko wspomnianych 35 dokumentów wystawionych przez poprzedników Zygmunta III na tronie. Księga nr 139 to czwarta z sześciu ksiąg kancelarii mniejszej Jana Tarnowskiego, obejmująca 430 wpisów, niemal wyłącznie po łacinie. Ich największa liczba przypada na marzec, czyli okres obradowania sejmu. Edycja jest opatrzona przypisami i indeksem.

    This article explores the structure and patterns of formation of court registers included in the Lithuanian Metrica of King Sigismund Augustus. The text focuses on the development and composition of the books attributed to the scribe called Jan Szymkowicz (Court Record Book no. 35, Book of Entries no. 38), with documents spanning a fourteen-year period (1554–1568). Th e article concludes that during King Sigismund Augustus’ rule, under the chancellorship of Mikołaj Radziwiłł called Czarny (Th e Black), there was in the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania no uniform pattern to be followed in order to make the king’s court registers, despite the fact that, in the mid-sixteenth century, chancery’s scribes usually infl uenced the chronological scope and structure of these registers.
    W artykule omówiono strukturę i zasady kompletowania ksiąg sądowych Zygmunta Augusta w Metryce Litewskiej. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono na analizę genezy i struktury tzw. ksiąg pisarza Jana Szymkowicza (35. księga spraw sądowych i 38. księga wpisów), do których wpisano dokumenty powstałe w ciągu 14 lat (1554–1568). W konkluzji stwierdzono, że w okresie panowania Zygmunta Augusta oraz pełnienia funkcji kanclerza przez Mikołaja Radziwiłła „Czarnego” w kancelarii Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego nie wypracowano jednego modelu kształtowania i kompletowania ksiąg sądowych władcy, chociaż w połowie XVI w. coraz częściej zajmowali się tym pisarze wielkiego księcia. This article explores the structure and patterns of formation of court registers included in the Lithuanian Metrica of King Sigismund Augustus.     The article presents the legal and organisational principles of the functioning of bridges and dikes in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The research is based on the legal regulations from the early modern era, including national legal norms and individual privileges. These provisions are considered in two aspects: spatial and economic ones.

    Volumes 183 and 186 of the Crown Metrica, preserved in the Central Archives of Historical Records, contain entries of documents issued under chancellory control of Piotr Gembicki. Volume No. 183 contains entries of 142 documents issued in 1638, and volume No. 186 contains 496 entries of documents issued between 28 January 1639 and 11 December 1641. Documents listed in these volumes, however, do not constitute a complete list of all documents issued by the royal chancery in that period. As much as 2/3 of entries in both books pertain to endowments and permits for sale of crown lands. Further 16% of entries are appointments to offices and other functions (e.g. royal appointments for tradesmen), as well as including selected persons in the group of royal courtiers. 13% of entries pertain to various royal endowments, e.g. for towns belonging to magnates or Church dignitaries. The remaining small number of entries are oblata and confirmations of transactions (e.g. purchase/sale of goods between burghers and Church institutions), confirmations of previous royal privileges granted to towns, guilds of artisans, monasteries, professors of Kraków University, etc. In terms of numbers, most recipients of royal documents registered in Crown Metrica volumes 183 and 186 are nobles and magnates. Another important group of recipients of royal documents were also royal and private towns and guilds of artisans, as well as Church institutions and members of the clergy. There are only a few isolated cases of documents issued to peasants

    The discussion article provides an analysis of a book recently published by Wojciech Krawczuk entitled Records and Regesta of the German Expedition of the Royal Swedish Chancery of King Sigismund III of the Years 1597–1600. The book contains a source edition of the minutes of the royal chancery of Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania (1587–1632), and King of Sweden (he retained power in 1592–1599), written around 1600, which has been supplemented by extensive regesta prepared by the editor. This discussion article evaluates this form of providing access to the contents of primary sources against the background of similar source editions consisting of records created by other royal chanceries, namely the chancery of the Kingdom of Poland, the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the chancery of the dukes of Mazovia. It is noteworthy that increasingly more archival materials are made available online through the websites of various archives and other institutions that preserve historical documents. In view of the growing trend to digitalize primary sources and make them available online, the idea of publishing complete source editions including full source texts, which began at the beginning of the twentieth century, seems unjustified nowadays. Currently, the solution proposed by Wojciech Krawczuk, based on the publication of regesta, appears to be the most favourable. Perhaps it would be appropriate to link the published regesta even more closely to the digitized archival materials by providing each one of them with a link or QR code that would refer to the website hosting the relevant digitalized source. The content of the documents included in the reviewed book differs significantly from the content of the records created by the chanceries of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Swedish documents are dominated by current affairs, primarily concerning military and diplomatic issues, and include much fewer normative acts, such as appointments to offices and bestowals of landed property.

    Th e article analyses the usefulness of the Lithuanian Metrica for the research on the history of Jews in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Th e study was based on records spanning the period between 1632 and 1764, and an analysis of the books of entries and court registers was made. A thorough search of the records of the Lithuanian Metrica revealed a rich collection of documents pertaining to many aspects of the functioning of Jewish people in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Of special signifi cance is a rich collection of privilege charters for Jewish communities in royal towns – there are over one hundred of them for the analysed period. As much interesting are also records of lawsuits between Jewish and Christian people before assessory and relational courts. Preserved early-modern court books of the Lithuanian Metrica made it possible to analyse Jewish-Christian confl icts in a long duration and to demonstrate the impact of various factors, such as political developments, economic changes, on the situation of Jews within their local urban community. Th e analysed documents also provide a lot of valuable information about the occupational structure and economic activity of Jews. Th e example of Lithuanian Metrica shows the importance for the study of the history of Jews in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of sources produced by the central state authorities, oft en neglected in the most recent research.
    W artykule przybliżono zagadnienie przydatności Metryki Litewskiej do badań nad historią Żydów w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim. Podstawą wywodów są akta z lat 1632–1764. Analizie poddane zostały księgi wpisów oraz sądowe. W Metryce Litewskiej zachowany jest bogaty zbór przywilejów dla gmin żydowskich w miastach królewskich oraz akta wielu procesów między Żydami a chrześcijanami, prowadzonych przed sądami asesorskimi i relacyjnymi. Materiał ten może być podstawą do badań pozycji prawnej i struktury zawodowej Żydów, a także pól konfliktów z chrześcijanami. The article presents the usefulness of the Lithuanian Metrica for the research on the history of Jews in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The study was based on records spanning the period between 1632 and 1764, and an analysis of the books of entries and court registers was made. There is in the Lithuanian Metrica a rich collection of privilege charters issued for Jewish communities of royal towns together with records of numerous lawsuits between Jewish and Christian people before assessory and relational courts. The material gathered could form a basis for research into the legal situation, occupational structure, and conflicts between Jews and Christians.

    The project: The Polish Crown Metrica of King Ladislaus IV Vasa. Summarizing of the Books from the Central Archivess of the Historical Records in Warsaw, 1633–1648, carried out under the National Programme for the Development of Humanities in years 2014–2018, has been completed. Within its framework almost 5200 summaries were made in Polish, and they are now available on-line at http://agad.gov.pl/metrykalia.html. Royal documents pertain to various areas of operation of the society, and they constitute an important source for understanding of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Plans for continuation are being made, to cover the reign of Jan Kazimierz Vasa, 1648–1668

    The paper presents preliminary results of research on the crown chancery of Ladislaus IV Vasa based on 12 books of inscription of the Crown Metrica (Metrica Regni), which reflect one particular aspect of the chancery’s work, namely recording the acts issued by the Office of the King. The offices of chancellor and deputy chancellor were held consecutively by six persons, most prominently by J. Zadzik, P. Gembicki, and J. Ossoliński. The chanceries had retained their modus operandi since the reign of Sigismund III. Every new deputy chancellor took staff members over from the departing chancellor. With time, small groups of royal secretaries in the chanceries grew in importance, the volume of recorded documents decreased, and more documents were made in Polish (14%) as compared to the dominant Latin. Anyway, throughout the reign of Ladislaus IV the chancery created a total of 70000 documents, being most active during the Diet’s sessions

    Artykuł dotyczy uwarunkowań towarzyszących powstania metryki (protokołów posiedzeń) kapituły katedralnej w Poznaniu (zachowanej od 1428 r.). Autor wskazuje przede wszystkim na podejmowane od schyłku XIV w. próby wprowadzenia reform zarządu majątku kapituły, co rodziło potrzebę utrwalania jej postanowień. Decydujące znaczenie dla powstania metryki miało wdrożenie tych reform (1423/1424). W tym samym czasie biskup Andrzej Łaskarz wprowadzał też szereg nowych rozwiązań kancelaryjnych.
    The paper discusses the conditions accompanying the founding of the metrica (protocols of meetings) of the Cathedral chapter in Poznań (preserved from 1428). The author points especially to the attempts at reforming the administration of the chapter’s estate undertaken from the end of the 14th century, which created the need to record its decisions. The most important cause for starting the metrica was the introduction of those reforms (1423/1424). At the same time bishop Andrzej Łaskarz also introduced several new chancellery solutions.

    El presente artículo recoge las primeras conclusiones de un programa experimental desarrollado en el liceo XXII José Martí de Varsovia durante el curso 2013-14 para analizar el impacto del uso significativo de la música moderna en la enseñanza de la literatura española dentro de un contexto de Español como Lengua Extranjera. En el marco de esta investigación se han enseñado contenidos literarios de métrica, temática y retórica durante cuarenta lecciones, a dos grupos de similares características pero de forma diferenciada. En uno de ellos, denominado de control, se ha utilizado un programa didáctico convencional, mientras que en el otro grupo, denominado experimental, se han estudiado los mismos contenidos literarios, pero a partir de canciones elegidas según los gustos de los alumnos y la relación con los contenidos curriculares. De esta forma se pueden comparar las diferencias en el proceso de aprendizaje y los resultados entre ambos grupos.
    Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia wnioski wyciągnięte na podstawie eksperymentalnego projektu przeprowadzonego w XXII Liceum im. José Martí w Warszawie w czasie lekcji, które miały miejsce w roku szkolnym 2013-2014. Celem ww. projektu była analiza zasadności zastosowania nowoczesnej muzyki w nauczaniu literatury hiszpańskiej na lekcjach języka hiszpańskiego jako obcego. W ramach tego eksperymentu w ciągu 40 lekcji przekazano dwóm podobnym do siebie grupom uczniów treści literackie o charakterze metrycznym, tematycznym i retorycznym. Należy podkreślić, że przekaz ww. treści był odmienny. W jednej z grup, nazwanej „kontrolną”, został zastosowany tradycyjny program dydaktyczny, podczas gdy w drugiej grupie, nazwanej „eksperymentalną”, przekazano te same treści literackie, ale na podstawie piosenek wybranych przez uczniów. W ten sposób można było porównać różnice w procesie uczenia się literatury i efekty tej nauki w obu grupach.
    The article presents the conclusions drawn on the basis of experimental project carried out at XXII José Martí Lyceum in Warsaw in the course of classes that took place in the 2013-2014 school year. An aim of the said project was to analyse the reasonability of application of modern music in teaching Spanish literature during the lessons of Spanish as a foreign language. Within the framework of this experiment, during 40 lessons, the two similar groups of pupils received literary contents of the metric, thematic and rhetoric nature. It must be emphasised that conveyance of the said contents was different. In one of the groups, called the ‘control’ one, there was used the traditional didactic programme, whereas in the second group, called ‘experimental’, there were conveyed the same literary contents but based on the songs chosen by pupils. Thus, it was possible to compare differences in the process of learning literature and effects of that learning in both groups.

    Referendaria Koronna to królewski sąd zadworny, który rozstrzygał spory między poddanymi a dzierżawcami dóbr koronnych. Zachowane do dziś dekrety referendarskie stanowią część Metryki Koronnej i są przedmiotem badań głównie dwóch dyscyplin naukowych: historii społeczno-gospodarczej i historii dawnego prawa polskiego. W artykule omówiono dekrety z lat 1605–1612 pochodzące z księgi referendarskiej o sygnaturze 3. Na ich podstawie wskazano główne przedmioty sporów, którymi były powinności i świadczenia chłopów względem dzierżawców wsi, oraz scharakteryzowano przebieg procesu sądowego. W aneksie źródłowym umieszczono 9 dekretów Referendarii Koronnej, w których stroną w sporze byli mieszczanie miast mazowieckich: Budziszewic, Goszczyna, Mławy, Warki i Wyszogrodu. Prezentowany materiał archiwalny stanowi przyczynek do badania w skali mikrohistorycznej życia codziennego społeczności małego miasta na początku XVII w., które było typowe dla krajobrazu urbanistycznego nowożytnej Rzeczypospolitej.
    The Crown Referendarial Court was a royal court that settled disputes between subjects and tenants of royal estates. The extant Referendarial decrees constitute part of the Crown Metrica and are studied mainly for the purposes of two scientific disciplines: socio-economic history and the history of Old Poland law. The article discusses decrees from the years 1605-1612 from the referendary book No. 3. Based on those, primary reasons for disputes were indicated, such as obligations and services of peasants towards village leaseholders, and the course of court proceedings was characterised. The source appendix contains 9 decrees of the Crown Referendarial Court, in which burghers of the Mazovian towns of Budziszewice, Goszczyn, Mława, Warka and Wyszogród were parties to the disputes. The presented archival material is a contribution to a micro-historical study of the everyday life of small town communities at the beginning of the 17th century, typical of the urban landscape of the Republic of Poland of the modern era.

    Opis:
    Boleslaus V (1453–1488) was the son of Boleslaus IV and Kiev princess Barbara Olelkovna. In 1471–1488 he ruled Warsaw and Nur lands, and in 1471–1484, Zakroczym land. Rule of Boleslaus V is viewed negatively. Increasingly frequent sales and pledging of land has led to diminishment of ducal demesne in Warsaw, Zakroczym and Nur lands as well as sale of Błonie, Tarczyn and Kamieniec counties. Lack of money and financial problems with repayment of debts has led to Boleslaus V becoming dependent not only on his brothers – Konrad III and Janusz II of Płock, but also on wealthy nobles and Warsaw patricians. In 1477 the duke married Anna Radzanowska, whom he soon abandoned. He died on 27 April 1488. He was buried on 12 May 1488 in St John collegiate church in Warsaw

    The article is devoted to the usefulness of the issued acts of the Lithuanian Metrica for research on the management and exploitation of water resources of the grand-ducal domain in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to complete Volok reform, with particular attention to fisheries. The types of entries that could be used in the above research were indicated.
