Opis:
This paper presents the results of the synthesis temperature on the properties of the ceramic powders of SrSi2O2N2:Eu2+ obtained by the solid-phase reaction. Synthesis was carried out in the temperature range of 1250-1650°C for 2 hours in nitrogen flow in the reducing atmosphere of the graphite furnace. The phases present in the resultant powders were identified by X-ray structural analysis (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the changes in the powder morphology as a result of the synthesis. The excitation and emission spectra measurements let to study phosphor photoluminescence properties. The results show the strong influence of temperature synthesis on the formation and purity of expected phases. The synthesis temperature also affects the luminescent properties of SrSi2O2N2:Eu2+ ceramic powders.

The luminescence of Ce3+ has been clearly seen in fluorite as 320 and 337 or 343 nm bands. In apatites, two distinct bands for two different Ca crystal sites were obtained: 340–380 nm for Ca(1) and 420–450 nm for Ca(2). The luminescence spectra of Eu2+ in the fluorite crystals were measured even at for low concentration of this element (0.11 ppm). For Ce3+, it has been showed that the crystal field strength depends more on the nature of the ligand than on the Me-ligand distances.

Opis:
Ionizing radiation applied on food eliminates harmful microorganisms, prevents sprouting and delays ripening. All methods for detection of irradiated food are based on physical, chemical, biological or microbiological changes caused by the treatment with ionizing radiation. When minerals are exposed to ionizing radiation, they accumulate radiation energy and store it in the crystal lattice, by which some electrons remain trapped in the lattice. When these minerals are exposed to optical stimulation, trapped electrons are released. The phenomenon, called optically stimulated luminescence or photostimulated luminescence, occurs when released electrons recombine with holes from luminescence centers in the lattice, resulting in emission of light with certain wavelengths. In this paper, the results of measurements performed on seven different samples of herbs and spices are presented. In order to make a comparison between luminescence signals from samples treated with different doses, unirradiated samples are treated with Co-60 with doses of 1 kGy, 5 kGy and 10 kGy. In all cases it was shown that the higher the applied dose, the higher the luminescence signal.

The qualitative analysis by synchronous luminescence technique was performed on aromatic fractions of primary tars obtained from humic and sapropelic coals (from Upper Silesia Basin). The synchronous luminescence technique, called also the technique of spectral fractionation, consists in the record of a spectrum at the constant difference between the positions of emission and excitation monochromators (Dl). This difference is calculated as a result of subtraction of effective emission and excitation wavelengths characterising compounds identified in investigated mixture. In relation with conventional luminescence technique, giving broad, low resolved bands in the conditions of ambient temperature, the synchronous luminescence technique enables to obtain well resolved and simplified spectra that facilitate the identification of individual components of the mixture. The application of this technique to analysis of aromatic fractions composition of primary tars from coals of various genesis and technological properties (sapropelic and humic coals) has shown a general similarity of composition with predomination of aromatic compounds containing 2-4 condensed rings. In the sample derived from sapropelic coal, a markedly higher intensity of bands is observed, attributed to aromatics of lower condensation degree (2-3 condensed rings), in relation with the bands of aromatics with higher intensity (3-4 condensed rings). The reverse relation is observed for sample from humic coal. In both analysed samples, a series of the following individual compounds has been identified from groups of aromatics: naphthalenes, acenaphthenes, benzofluorenes, anthracenes, pyrenes, and benz(a)anthracenes. Smaller amounts of benz(a)pyrenes, benz(ghi)perylene, and 3, 4-9, 10-dibenzopyrene were also encountered. The technique of synchronous luminescence made possible, therefore, the identification of individual components of complex mixture of aromatic compounds in coal derived products. This technique is thus of great value for the characteristics of aromatic compounds in thermolysis products of coal, in the cognitive aspect, as well as in monitoring of environment.

Luminescence dating is based mainly on the dosimetric properties of quartz and feldspar. These minerals are among the most popular found on Earth, resulting in the possibility of using luminescence methods in practically any environment. Currently, quartz remains the best recognized mineral in terms of dosimetric properties, particularly with regards to results obtained for quartz grains, which are regarded as being the most reliable in luminescence dating. Supporters of luminescence methods are constantly growing, however, these groups do not always have sufficient knowledge to avoid even the most basic of issues that may be encountered overall – from the process of sampling through to the awareness of what a single luminescence result represents. The present paper provides an overview of several practical aspects of luminescence dating such as correct sampling procedures and all necessary information regarding the calculation of the dose rate and equivalent dose with particular reference to potential problems that occur when the age of the sample is being determined. All these aspects are crucial for obtaining a reliable dating result, on the other hand, they remain a potential source of uncertainty.

An optical fluorescent sensor based on a chitosan thin film co-doped with Eu3+ and a bromothymol blue pH indicator has been developed. Near-UV to visible (350–400 nm) excitation of the europium (III) chelate complexes with 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione exhibits a typical lanthanide emission with maximum at 618 nm. Luminescent spectra of the Eu3+ complex were found to be insensitive to the presence of methylamine gas. Therefore, bromothymol blue, a non-fluorescent pH indicator with an absorbance maximum of deprotonated form close to the Eu3+ emission band was added to the film to provide a non-fluorescent reversible response to different methylamine concentrations, which can be detected by measuring the Eu3+ emission.

Glasses doped with lanthanides ions may be good white light emitters due to their interesting physical and spectroscopic properties. In this paper, the optical spectroscopy of rare earths doped glasses with a special emphasis on application as white LED were presented. The luminescent glass materials containing Ln3+ (Ln = Pr, Tb, Dy) and Ce3+ ions were obtained. The glasses samples were prepared by a traditional melt-quenching technique. The optical properties of glasses containing various concentrations of rare earth ions were analyzed. It was observed that luminescence bands corresponding to characteristic transitions of Ln3+ and cerium ions are present on spectra measured under direct excitation of Ce3+. Therefore, it indicates that the energy transfer process between Ce3+ /Pr3+, Ce3+ /Tb3+, Ce3+ / Dy3+ ions in glasses occurs. Some parameters such as correlated color temperature (CCT) and chromaticity coordinates (CIE) that characterize white LEDs were analyzed and discussed in detail.

CaAl₂O₄:Eu³⁺ (1 mol.%) co-doped with varying concentration of Gd³⁺ (1, 2, 5, and 10 mol.%) were prepared by combustion synthesis method at 600°C and further annealed at 1000°C. All the compositions were investigated for their structural and photoluminescence properties. It was observed that both states of europium i.e. Eu³⁺ and Eu²⁺ were present and ratio of these states changes on heating at 1000°C. The materials synthesized at 600°C showed high intense peak around 440 nm due to presence of Eu²⁺ and less intense peaks in the red region which were due to presence of Eu³⁺. On annealing the compounds at 1000°C, intensity of peak around 440 nm decreases and intensity of peaks in the red region increases significantly. The ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₃ transition due to Eu³⁺ at 657 nm appears as the highest intensity peak. All co-doped samples annealed at 1000°C showed the higher intensity than the mono doped sample which is due to energy transfer from the Gd³⁺ to Eu³⁺. The second rare-earth ion (Gd³⁺) acts as sensitizer and enhances the photoluminescence intensity. The X-ray diffraction spectra reveal the monoclinic phase of CaAl₂O₄ in all the samples which showed that Eu³⁺ and Gd³⁺ do not change the crystalline structure of calcium aluminate.

In this paper YVO4:Dy3+ was synthesized via solid state method at 1100°C and effects of different quantities of SiO2 particles on microstructure and photoluminescence properties were investigated in details. To study the microstructure and properties of these composites XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and PL equipments were employed. It was found that via addition of SiO2 particles to YVO4:Dy3+ phosphors, strong bonding is made between SiO2 particles and phosphors. Furthermore, based on stronger electronegativity of Si 2p element compared to Y 3d and V 2p elements, increase of SiO2 causes the increase of binding energy. Moreover, this research showed that the addition of 10 wt% SiO2 particles to YVO4:Dy3+ material enhances the excitation and emission luminescence properties, significantly. Further increase of SiO2 particles results in suppress of emission intensity.

Self-assembly of N6-donor bis(terpyridine) ligand L with transition metal ions: Co(II), Mn(II) and Cd(II) leads to a formation of three kinds of supramolecular complexes. In the electronic absorption and emission spectra of supramolecular complexes additional bands were observed what was ascribed to the coordination of ligand molecules to metal ions. Luminescence properties of these complexes strongly depend on the kind of metal ions and counter ions. The effective blue luminescence was observed in the case of Mn(II) and Cd(II) complexes in which all N-donor atoms of ligand molecules coordinate with the metal center.

W artykule omówiono wyniki kilku interdyscyplinarnych geologicznych datowań wykonanych metodami optycznymi. Wiek starszych osadów, głównie plejstoceńskich określono za pomocą termoluminescencji (TL). Młodsze holoceńskie osady datowano z wykorzystaniem optycznie stymulowanej luminescencji (OSL). Na przykładzie osadów mineralnych zawierających kwarc wyjaśniono podstawy obu technik datowania. Często są one stosowane naprzemiennie, w zależności od materiału i jego szacowanego wieku. Metoda OSL rekomendowana jest do badania próbek na stanowiskach archeologicznych. W obu technikach analitycznych mierzy się wielkości dawek pochłoniętych naturalnego promieniowania jonizującego. Zwrócono uwagę na znaczenie laboratoryjnych źródeł promieniowania gamma w wyznaczaniu krzywych kalibracji.
The article discusses the results of several interdisciplinary studies on the dating of geological sediments with optical methods. The age of older sediments, mainly Pleistocene ones, was determined by thermoluminescence (TL). Younger Holocene sediments were dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The basics of both methods of dating sediments containing quartz are explained. The OSL method is successfully used to determine the age of mineral sediment in archaeological sites. The basis of both analytical techniques is the measurement of the amount of absorbed doses of natural ionizing radiation. Also the importance of laboratory gamma radiation sources used for the determination of calibration curves has been emphasized.

W artykule, po krótkim opisie rozwoju historycznego, przedstawiono teorię termoluminescencji (TL). Omówiono i porównano trzy metody stymulowania luminescencji termiczną (TSL), optyczną (OSL) i radiową (RPL). Przedstawiono i opisano szeroki zakres zastosowań detektorów TL w dozymetrii indywidualnej i środowiskowej z naciskiem na pomiary ultrawysokich dawek. Jako szczególnie ważne w dozymetrii klinicznej do radioterapii nowotworów oka, opracowano termoluminescencyjne detektory planarne 2D. Opisano udział zespołu z Instytutu Fizyki Jądrowej (IFJ) w kosmicznym eksperymencie MATROSHKA. Przedstawiono również nowe materiały TL i nowe metody pomiarowe.
In the paper, after a brief description of historical development, the theory of thermoluminescence (TL) is presented. Three methods of thermally (TSL), optically (OSL) and radio (RPL) stimulated luminescence are discussed and compared. A wide range of applications of TL detectors in individual and environmental dosimetry with an attention put on ultra-high dose measurements is presented and described. As particularly important in clinical dosimetry for eye-tumor radiotherapy, the planar 2D detectors TL were developed. The participation of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (IFJ) group in the Cosmos MATROSHKA experiment is described. Also, the new TL materials and measurement methods are presented.

Results of the examination of the variety of dry plant extracts (Thyme extract, Celery seed extract, Artichoke extract, Citrus aurantium extract and others) by two different detection methods are described. Both PSL and TL methods are presented and discussed. Comparative study based on the analysis of the results obtained by thermoluminescence (TL) and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) measurements delivered the arguments that preselection of detection methods based on model studies is rational to be adapted in analytical laboratories specialized in the detection of irradiated foods.

W prezentowanej pracy została przedstawiona charakterystyka biosensorów luminescencyjnych, pokazano ich miejsce w całej rodzinie biosensorów. Opisano rolę mikroorganizmów w biosensorach opartych na luminescencji. Przedstawiono mechanizm luminescencji w bakteriach oraz przykłady genetycznie zmienionych mikroorganizmów i ich zastosowanie jako mikrobiologicznych biosensorów opartych na luminescencji. Zaprezentowano zastosowanie mikrobiologicznych biosensorów luminescencyjnych w ochronie środowiska, przemyśle spożywczym, przemyśle obronnym i medycynie, a także pokazano przykłady komercyjnie dostępnych czujników mikrobiologicznych z uwzględnieniem tych bazujących na zjawisku luminescencji.
In this paper microbiological biosensors based on luminescence were presented, showing their place in the whole family of biosensors. The role of microorganisms in biosensors based on luminescence have been described. The mechanism of luminescence in bacteria and examples of genetically engineered microorganisms, their use as a microbial biosensors based on luminescence has been shown. The use of microbiological luminescent biosensors in: environmental protection, food industry, defense industry and medicine, as well as examples of commercially available microbiological sensors including those based on luminescence phenomenon have been shown. In reviewing the literature, there are numerous work-related microbiological biosensors, but not found among them the manuscript which present selected information on the microbial biosensors based on luminescence phenomenon. Novelty of this study is to provide the selected information on the microbial biosensors based on luminescence and the presentation of their latest applications.

The identified features of the shells/skins which have developed around the four big Morasko meteorites found in 2006 year, indicate the existence of shock pressure and high temperature in the immediate vicinity of the falling lumps. This was also the moment when zeroing of the luminescence occurred. The results obtained for the dating of the meteorite shells/skins using the TL technique prove the age of luminescence zeroing about 5000 to 6000 years ago. TL dating of meteorite shells/skins was preceded by OSL measurements in the mineral sediments situated in the beds of Morasko hollows A and B, directly below the organic filling sediment. The Morasko crater A mineral bottom is constituted by deformed sediments from the Neogene “Poznań series”. In the crater B mineral bottom the glacial sediments exists – not younger than the “Poznań phase” of last Scandinavian glaciation. The theoretical youngest age all of these sediments is 17000-18000 years BP. The OSL results obtained into 101 measured portions of mineral material from the hollows, prove its rejuvenation. There are many indices <5000 years (13%) and in between 5000-10000 years (30%), totally 43%. Data from TL and OSL measurements for the area of the Morasko Meteorite Reserve are an indicator of the luminescence zeroing (both the shells/skins of meteorites and depressions bottom sediments), occurring around 5000 years ago. In Morasko area a local grouped fall of extraterrestrial material as well as craters creation took place. The Estonian Kaali main crater and surrounding small craters were examined too. The TL data from the material of main crater rim, the material from inside slope of crater 1 and the powered Silurian dolomites at the bottom of crater 4, gave a similar results – 5000-6000 years BP. Also older data (up to 11500 years BP) were obtained in the mixture of Quaternary and Silurian dolomite detritus of the inside slope crater 1 and at the rim top of crater 2/8. The OSL data have given the similar results. The comparative study to the Ilumetsa and Tsõõrikmäe relatively small craters were performed. The Devonian sandstones exist there beneath the local features and sediments of Quaternary age. The measurement results of OSL technique do not evidence so clear data as in Kaali site. Only few indicators were young (<4500 year BP). Most of data seems to be under influence of not complete bleaching of old rocks luminescence signal. The attempt of the TL and OSL measurements to impact time establish lead to the following conclusion: a) explosive – “high energetic” events to be effective of full zeroing luminescence and impact time establish, b) the striking – “low energetic” events are less effective in bleaching luminescence and impact time establish.

During the past 50 years, scintillators have been among the most important nuclear radiation detectors. Inorganic scintillators are widely used in experimental nuclear physics, high energy physics, nuclear medicine, nuclear tomography, environmental studies and many other fields of use. Scintillation crystals based on cesium iodide (CsI) are matters of relatively low hygroscopy, high atomic number, easy handling and low cost, characteristics that favor their use as radiation detectors. In this work, the growth of pure CsI crystals, CsI:Br and CsI:Pb, using the Bridgman technique, is described. Ions of divalent lead (Pb2+) doped in the crystal structures are efficient emission centers and their application as scintillators is still the reason for intensive studies. Recently, promising results have been found for crystals of CsI doped by bromine (Br) for their use as radiation detectors. The concentration of the bromine doping element (Br) was studied in the range from 1.5 × 10–1 M to 10–2 M and the lead (Pb) in the range from 10–2 M to 5 × 10–4 M. To evaluate the scintillators developed, systematic measurements were carried out for luminescence emission and luminescence decay time for gamma radiation, Vickers microhardness assays, and analysis of crystals response to the gamma radiation, in the energy range from 350 keV to 1330 keV, and alpha particles from a 241Am source, with energy of 5.54 MeV. The obtained values for luminescence decay time for CsI:Br and CsI:Pb crystals, were from 13 to 19 ns.

Litho-, pedo- and palynological analyses constrained by radiometric dating of two loess-palaeosol sequences, Nahirne and Velyka Andrusivka, exposed in a cliff at the eastern edge of the Dnieper Upland, Ukraine, document regional environmental changes in the western marginal zone of the Dnieper lobe. The postglacial loess sedimentation cycle was initiated during MIS 8, immediately after the ice sheet recession. On the basis of palaeorelief analysis, subsequent morphogenetic stages of the original postglacial relief, associated with the modifying and masking role of the loess, and destructive slope processes were reconstructed. Periglacial steppe with consistently present scattered trees formed the Pleistocene landscape in the Middle Dniester area during the last three glacial periods. In such an environment, the following loess beds, correlated with marine isotope stages (MIS), were deposited: Dnieper (dn) - MIS 8, Tyasmyn (ts) - MIS 6, Uday (ud) - MIS 4 and Bug (bg) - MIS 2. During the last two warm periods: Kaydaky (kd) - MIS 7 and Pryluky (pl) - MIS 5, the landscape was not fully forested. As a result, the individual palynological features of these soils show a diverse character. The TL and OSL dates form a sequence with numerous inversions that are difficult to interpret. Although these data do not significantly influence the interpretation, they show that: 1) there are loesses that undoubtedly formed after the maximum extent of the ice sheet by short-distance transport of dust material from local fresh glacial deposits and the underlying Paleogene rocks; 2) date distortions result from the activities of an exceptionally rich pedofauna that has contaminated the material not only in the soil sections of the profile but also in the adjacent loess. It is possible to delimit a few stages of pedofaunal activity in each of the soil units.

The article presents an overview and a classification of X-ray detection methods. The main motivation for its preparation was the need to select a suitable and useful method for detecting signals from a currently developed miniature micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) X-ray source. The described methods were divided into passive and active ones, among which can be distinguished: chemical, luminescent, thermo-luminescent, gas ionization, semiconductor, and calorimetric methods. The advantages and drawbacks of each method were underlined, as well as their usefulness for the characterisation of the miniature MEMS X-ray source.

The Volochysk site belongs to important and unique loess sites in the Podolia Upland (W Ukraine) because it contains relatively well-developed loess deposits representing the last and penultimate glacial cycles. This loess-palaeosol sequence consists of pedocomplex S1 (MIS 5) developed on loess L2, and loess L1 (MIS 4-2) with the palaeosols of lower, interstadial rank. In this sequence, different periglacial structures were found, including the largest ones of ice-wedge cast type. Different quartz and polymineral fractions separated from the samples collected in the Volochysk site were dated using luminescence methods (SAR OSL, post-IR IRSL and TL) in three Polish luminescence laboratories in Gdańsk, Gliwice and Lublin. In total, 69 luminescence dating results were obtained for 18 samples. The methodological and research aims were to carry out mutual verification of the obtained dating results as well as to analyse and interpret the differences between them, and to determine the age of distinguished deposit layers and the period of cryogenic activities. The luminescence dates of the sediments, which were deposited during MIS 2, 3 and 4, corresponded fairly well to the ages attributed to these stages. They also indicate the age of periglacial phenomena. However, the TL dates were generally older than the OSL ones, especially those obtained for the sediments deposited during MIS 5 and 6. The results of the research of the Volochysk sequence were compared with those obtained in past years for the loess deposits of the Volhynian Upland (north of Podolia) during similar inter-laboratory analyses conducted to determine their age. The results of OSL datings of the older deposits (MIS 5 and MIS 6) are underestimated irrespective of the used method, and the type (quartz, polymineral) and size of grains. Numerous attempts were made to explain this phenomenon, which, however, give no answer. It was only found that this underestimation corresponded to the equivalent dose value of ~150 Gy.

A series of fluorotellurite glasses based on 70TeO2–5MxOy–10P2O5–10ZnO–5PbF2 in mol%, where MxOy = (WO3, Nb2O5) doped with 2400 ppm of Er2O3 have been prepared by the conventional melt quenching method. The influence of modifiers on thermal and optical properties of glasses has been analyzed. Thermal characteristics of glasses like the glass transition temperature Tg, the temperature for the crystallization onset Tx, the maximum crystallization temperature Tc, and the thermal stability parameter were determined by the DSC method. The ellipsometric data have provided Sellmeier-type dispersion relations of the refractive index of the investigated glasses. The optical parameters are used to calculate the molar refractivity, molar polarizability, oxide ion polarizability, molar cation polarizability, and a number of polarizable atoms per unit volume for every glass composition in order to interpret the refractive index of these glasses.

One of criteria suggesting impact origin may be recognition of extraterrestrial matter inside or around suspected cavities. In case of Morasko some dating results throw doubt on link between craters and meteorites. Conclusion of some past research papers was that cavities were formed about 5 ka BP (e.g. palynological investigation, luminescence dating), while more or less facts testify fall in the Middle Ages (e.g. “young” charcoal pieces in crust of meteorites or shrapnel stuck in the roots of old tree). In this paper we perform comprehensive analysis of each result and check if there exists alternative explanation. During past palynological investigation, there were examined two craters. It was concluded that beginning of accumulation of sediments in smaller cavity started 5500–5000 BP. However, pollen spectrum for largest basin was different suggesting younger age. The problem is that according to bathymetric maps, samples could be collected from inner uplift (similar feature was observed inside Porzadzie and Jaszczulty, unconfirmed impact structures yet). If we compare profiles from craters with recent research (palynological study supported by radiocarbon dating) on sediments in Lake Strzeszynskie (6 km SW from Morasko) pollen spectrum seems to be similar more to results dated to <1000 BP. Especially percentage of non-arboreal pollen for both examined Morasko craters is much higher (5 times greater than it was for layer dated to 5 ka BP in Lake Strzeszynskie). Possibility of short disturbance (related to impact) cannot be excluded, but in such case any time of event should be taken into account. For small lakes (like those filling the craters) also local conditions could play important role. Analysis of luminescence dating may also discuss past conclusions. OSL method applied for samples taken from the thin layer of sand in the bottom of largest structure (under 3,9 m of organic sediments filling the crater) suggested age 5–10 ka BP for 24 aliquots. Same number of samples (24) revealed age 0–5 ka BP (13 samples with age <3 ka BP including several younger than 1 ka BP). Older dates can be explained by partial or even no zeroing, but last contact with light (zeroing signal) of sand grains (excavated from depth of almost 4 meters under organic matter) seems that might occur only during (or shortly after) the impact. It is difficult to find convincing arguments, which can undermine initial radiocarbon dating giving age <1 ka BP for 7 of 9 samples taken from the bottom layer of organic sediments from three Morasko craters. Same issue may exist with small charcoal pieces with age <2 ka BP (and several dated to ~700 BP) discovered deep in sinter-weathering crust of meteorites. Study of charcoal particles excluded their origin during post-sedimentary processes (like forest fire) unless meteorite fragments were laying directly on the surface for period between impact and wildfire (surviving whole time inhospitable climate conditions). There are two other possible explanations of charcoals. Either they were present at location as a result of past forest fire or they were produced during impact. However, similar small charcoal pieces were discovered around many craters (Kaali, Ilumetsa, Campo del Cielo, Whitecourt) and they were successfully used to estimate maximum age of those structures. During second stage of 14C dating the age obtained from three samples (taken few centimeters above the mineral bottom) was estimated ~5 ka BP. Looking for answer why these results are so different from previous once there may be mentioned at least two options. Lake sediments is difficult matter for radiocarbon dating and results may be hundreds or even thousands years older than real age. Second explanation may be that older matter (remnant of trees, paleosoil etc.), distributed around craters during impact, could be displaced by wind, rain, erosion and trapped in the bottom of cavities. The argument, which may be also against hypothesis of impact ~5 ka BP is meteorite shrapnel stuck in the roots of old tree. Result of expertise showed, that there exists mechanical damage in the wood and the only possible explanation is that meteorite has hit living tree. Maximum age, that this type of wood may preserve (inside building) is 1,8 ka while in natural environment not more than 500 years. Anyway some further examinations should be performed. The age obtained during AMS 14C dating of 2 samples from thin layer of paleosoil, discovered under overturned flap around largest Morasko crater, was ~5 ka BP. Observation that preserved layer of paleosoil is approximately 3 times thinner than thickness of modern soil may lead to conclusion that during impact top (younger) layer of organic sediments was removed and only older part “survived” in few locations close to the rim. The conclusion of the research was that dating provides maximum age of the impact (which does not exclude much younger impact <1 ka BP) so could be considered as right explanation of past discrepancies.

The morphogenesis and inner structure of the Holocene foredune plain in the Narva-Joesuu area, eastern Gulf of Finland, were studied using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) study and interpretation of airborne LIDAR elevation data. The results show that the Narva-Joesuu foredune plain consists of ca. 100 parallel coastal foredune ridges built of well-sorted fine sand underlain by gently (~7°) seaward-dipping sandy beach deposits. The distal part of the plain, which consists of at least 15 ridges, formed during the regressive phase of the Ancylus Lake/Early Litorina Sea, serving as a barrier for the lagoon behind it. A larger portion of ridges, with an average progradation rate of 0.26 m a-1, formed under conditions of falling relative sea level during the Litorina regression and was separated from the older foredune succession by a hiatus related to the Litorina transgression at 8.5-7.3 cal. ka BP. In the highest central part of the plain the foredune growth was interrupted by foredune instability and a re-blowing episode dated to 5.4 ± 0.9 ka BP which may correlate with a larger regional cooling at 5.8-5.1 cal. ka BP in the North Atlantic and central Europe. During the last 3000 years, the foredune progradation rate decreased to 0.19 m a-1, most probably because of decelerated land-uplift and increased human impact due to coastal protection.

We assess the suitability of luminescence (TL and OSL) dating techniques for establishing a precise Late Pleistocene chronology for the northern Baltic area, and show on the basis of the fine sand/coarse silt fraction of subaqueous deposits, how sedimentological composition influences the dates obtained. Turbidity, loading by fine suspended material, water depth, velocity of outwash streams and transport length, and also perhaps rapid night-time sedimentation and incorporation of older, unbleached particles are factors that variably influence the extent of bleaching of the luminescence signal, and thus, cause variability of dates obtained. Alongside reliable dates for "late-glacial" deposits between 11 000-15 000 OSL years BP, many entirely unreliable dates from 8 000 ±300 to 114 000 ±8 000 OSL years BP have been obtained. This means that the age determination of glaciofluvial deposits is extremely difficult in practice. This applies particularly to intermorainic sediments, the exact genesis of which is unknown. The paper is addressed to the investigators wishing to use luminescence dating techniques to establishing the Pleistocene chronostratigraphy of glaciofluvial deposits.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) methods are commonly used in dosimetry of ionizing radiation and dating of archaeological and geological objects. A typical disadvantage of OSL detectors is signal loss over a longer time scale. In this article, we present a method of studying this phenomenon as well as monitoring the state of the detector by means of optical sampling. The method was used to determine the OSL signal loss (fading) characteristics of selected potassium feldspars.

Yb3+/Er3+/GZO ceramics have been synthesized with high temperature solid-state method. The phase and structure of the Yb3+/Er3+/GZO ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD pattern that following ions Yb3+, Er3+ and Ga3+ were well doped into the ZnO lattice. Effi cient visible up-conversion (UC) red and green emission were observed under 980 nm excitation. The mechanism of the UC luminescence is investigated on the basis of the UC luminescence emission spectra, the power curve and energy level diagram. The infl uence of doping ions to the intensity ratio of red to green is analyzed and high purity of red light (red/green = 29.9) is fi nally obtained.

Opis:
Luminescence and excitation spectra of the systems on the basis of the nanoporous glass impregnated with KBr-TlBr and TlBr solutions as well as KBr single crystals surface-doped with thallium were studied in visible and ultraviolet regions at T = 77 K. It was shown that each of the studied systems has its peculiar optical properties, which differ from those of the corresponding macroscopic single crystals. The results are discussed taking into account the physicochemical features of the thallium insertion in the preparation of samples from solutions.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących wpływu zasolenia podłoża na mrozoodporność siewek żyta odmiany Amilo. Doświadczenie prowadzono w warunkach kontrolowanych, na pożywce Hoaglanda, zmodyfikowanej dodatkiem NaCl w stężeniach: 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 i 150 mmol·dm-3. Metodą luminescencyjną wykazano, że w siewkach żyta, hartowanych na niską temperaturę, które rosły na pożywce z dodatkiem NaCl blokowanie transportu elektronowego zachodziło w niższej temperaturze niż u roślin kontrolnych. Gradient potencjału na błonach tylakoidalnych niehartowanych i hartowanych siewek żyta nie zależał od zasolenia. Metodą konduktometryczną stwierdzono, że odporność błon komórkowych siewek żyta na niską temperaturę zmniejszała się pod wpływem NaCl, zarówno siewek niehartowanych jak i hartowanych.
The influence of salt stress on frost resistance of winter rye, cultivar Amilo seedlings was studied. Plants were grown on Hoagland medium, containing NaCl in concentrations: 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mmol·dm-3. By detection of delayed luminescence one drew the conclusion, that blocking electron transport in hardened plants occured at lower temperature in seedlings exposed to salinity than in control plants. Gradient of potential induced on thylacoid membranes in unhardened and hardened plants practically did not depend on salinity. Conductometric method showed that the used solutions of NaCl decreased the sensibility of the seedlings to low temperature both the unhardened and hardened plants.

Two methods of determining the chlorophyll a concentration in the sea have been formulated on the basis of artificially induced fluorescence measured with the aid of submersible fluorometers. The method of statistical correlation is founded on the empirical relationship between fluorescence and chlorophyll concentration. The theoretical model of fluorescence described in Part 1 of this paper (see Ostrowska et al. 2000, this volume) provides the basis of the other method, the physical method. This describes the dependence of the specific fluorescence of phytoplankton on the chlorophyll concentration, a diversity of photophysiological properties of phytoplankton and the optical characteristics of the fluorometer. In order to assess their practicability, the methods were subjected to empirical verification. This showed that the physical method yielded chlorophyll concentrations of far greater accuracy. The respective error factors of the estimated chlorophyll concentration were x = 2.07 for the correlation method and x = 1.5 for the physical method. This means that the statistical logarithmic error varies from −52 to +107% in the case of the former method but only from −33 to +51% in the case of the latter. Thus, modifying the methodology has much improved the accuracy of chlorophyll determinations.

In this work we have studied the possibility of determining the rate of phytoplankton photosynthesis in situ using a submersible pump-and-probe fluorometer in water areas differing in their trophic level, as well as in climatic and hydrophysical characteristics. A biophysical model was used to describe the relationship between photosynthesis, underwater irradiance, and the intensity of phytoplankton fluorescence excited by an artificial light source. Fluorescence intensity was used as a measure of light absorption by phytoplankton and for assessing the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion at photosynthetic reaction centers. Parameters of the model that could not be measured experimentally were determined by calibrating fluorescence and irradiance data against the primary production measured in the Baltic Sea with the radioactive carbon method. It was shown that the standard deviation of these parameters in situ did not exceed 20%, and the use of their mean values to estimate the phytoplankton photosynthetic rate showed a good correlation between the calculated and measured data on primary production in the Baltic (r = 0.89), Norwegian (r = 0.77) and South China (r = 0.76) Seas.

Opis:
A comparative analysis of various methods for the decomposition of broad bands into individual components has been carried out. It is shown that the most universal are the methods of modulation spectroscopy and direct differentiation of conventional spectral characteristics, which, unlike the widely used Alentsev-Fock method, are applicable to spectra of any type (luminescence, transmission, absorption, etc.). The features and capabilities of the direct differentiation method are used to identify the structure in the emission spectra and transmission of ZnSe single-crystal substrates.
Przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą różnych metod dekompozycji szerokich pasm na poszczególne składniki. Pokazano, że najbardziej uniwersalne są metody spektroskopii modulacyjnej i bezpośrednie różnicowanie konwencjonalnych charakterystyk spektralnych, które w przeciwieństwie do powszechnie stosowanej metody Alentseva-Focka mają zastosowanie do widm dowolnego rodzaju (luminescencja, transmisja, absorpcja itp.). Cechy i możliwości bezpośredniej metody różnicowania są stosowane do identyfikacji struktury w widmach emisyjnych i transmisyjnych monokrystalicznych składników ZnSe .

W artykule przestawiono wyniki prac nad zastosowaniem dwóch nowych typów światłowodów domieszkowanych jonami ziem rzadkich do budowy laserów włóknowych. Jednym z nich, są światłowody wielordzeniowe umożliwiające uzyskanie wiązki laserowej o dużej mocy i małej rozbieżności (supermodu). Drugi prezentowanym rozwiązaniem są światłowody, w których ukształtowany w spiralę rdzeń zapewnia silną absorpcję pompy, jak również łatwe jej odsprzężenie na wyjściu światłowodu od generowanego w rdzeniu promieniowania. Wytworzono oba rodzaje światłowodów domieszkowanych jonami Nd3+ oraz określono ich właściwości luminescencyjne.
The high power, short pulse generation in a fibre lasers is limited by nonlinear effects (Raman and Brillouin scattering, self - phase modulation). Therefore it's necessary to find innovative constructions of rare-earth doped optical fibres considerably different from conventional double-clad optical fibres. In the paper the possibility of applying new optical fibers as an active material for constructing high-power fiber lasers is presented. Multicore active optical fibre is one of new construction. Such a fibre enables attaining a high-intensity and low-divergence laser beam (supermod) in the far-field diffraction region (Fig. 2, 4). Second type of new active optical fibre is helical - core optical fibre. Due to a specific shape of the core such fibre is characterized by effective absorption of pump radiation.Moreover, optimization of material and geometrical optical fibre properties enables to increase volume of active material (core diameter) while single mode operation is preserved. The luminescence spectra of both types of manufactured optical fibres doped with Nd3+ are presented (Fig. 7, 8, 12).

Przedstawiono koncepcję sensorów rozciągania i kondycjonowania w zmiennych temperatury wykonanych z polimerów barwionych barwnikiem luminescencyjnym o strukturze stlibenu (4,4'-Bis(2-benzoxazolyl) stilben). Dla sensorów rozciągania wyznaczono eksperymentalnie warunki odnoszące się do parametrów wymiarowych, jakie muszą być spełnione, aby paski sensorów mogły stanowić element detekcyjny. Dla sensorów kondycjonowania określono zakres temperatur, przy którym możliwa jest wzrokowa identyfikacja zmian barwy sensora oświetlonego promieniowaniem nadfioletowym.
The conception of stretch sensors made of polyethylene with luminescence dye with stliben structure (4,4-Bis(2-benzoxazolyl)stilben) is presented in the paper. The sensor models are made as stripes which are mounted to the so called basic material for which the stretch process or the temperature change process is monitored. As a result of external forces on the basic material (stretching) or temperature changes there are irreversible changes in the structure of an integrated with it sensor as a dyed polymer belt/stripe. It also causes change in the spectrum of visible radiation emitted as a result of lighting the dye polymer with ultraviolet radiation. Potential use of the designed stretch polymer sensors are elements of personal protective equipment for which, as a result of external factors, there are irreversible changes that cause reduction or total loss of the required protective properties. That element of equipment that protects against fall from height (stretch sensor) or protective clothes (temperature sensor) should be classified to this group. For stretch sensors the methods of mounting dyed polymer stripes to the basic material (which is stretched) were determined. As a result of the performed research there were determined the experimental conditions concerning the dimensional parameters which should be met to use dyed polymer stripes as one of the detect elements for stretch processes in a basic material. For storage sensors the range of temperature changes, recognizable during visual inspection, was determined.

This study provides a vegetation and climate history of an alpine wetland in the centre of China’s Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) over the last 14.8 ka. High resolution climate proxies include vegetation (pollen), geochemical (Ba, Rb, δ13C) and physical (particle size and magnetic susceptibility) data; optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and AMS radiocarbon dating were used to reconstruct the environmental changes in the wetland ecosystem. Based on physical and geochemical proxies, the sucession divided into five stratigraphic units encompassing time intervals of 14.76–14.31, 14.31–13.17, 13.17–4.47, 4.47–0.51 and 0.51–0 ka. The average sedimentation rate of all these units was 0.098 mm/a. The study showed that this ecosystem was sensitive to climate change.

This volume contains a set of eight papers presenting the results of the latest research into the interaction of light with marine phytoplankton by teams from the Marine Physics Department at the IO PAS in Sopot, and the Department of Environmental Physics at the Pedagogical University of Słupsk. Tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminium with poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (Alq₃:PVK) or polystyrene sulfonate (Alq₃:PSS) were deposited by spin-coating on glass and silicon substrates. SEM measurements show that relatively smooth thin films were obtained. Fourier transform infrared measurements were performed to confirm the composition of the samples. The optical properties of thin films containing Alq₃:PVK and Alq₃:PSS were characterised using absorption spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. It was found that the absorption spectrum of Alq₃:PVK is characterised by four bands, while for Alq₃:PSS only three bands are visible. The photoluminescence of the studied thin layers shows a peak with a maximum at about 500 nm. Additionally, cyclic voltammetry of Alq₃ is also presented. Theoretical density functional theory calculations provide the insight into the interaction and nature of Alq₃:PVK and Alq₃:PSS excited states. Finally, the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) structure based on Alq₃:PVK was fabricated and showed strong electroluminescence with a green emission at 520 nm. The results of the device show that the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Alq₃:PVK/Ca/Al system can be useful for the production of low-cost OLEDs with Alq₃:PVK as an active layer for future lighting applications.

New optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages show that sandy deposits overlain by Late Weichselian subglacial till in central Latvia are of Early to Middle Weichselian age. The finer chronological resolution of unconsolidated sediment deposition in the Central Latvian Lowland (CLL) remains relatively unstudied, and here we provide a first characterisation of the deposits with respect to their age. Three OSL ages ranging between 84 ± 9 ka and 112 ± 11 ka suggest that the deposits studied in the CLL are of Early Weichselian age (MIS 5). We found no Middle Weichselian deposits in the CLL, and assume that any such younger sediments might have been eroded during the advance of the Zemgale Lobe in the Late Weichselian. One site, in the ice-marginal zone adjacent to the interlobate area, has nevertheless deposits dated to 44 ± 10 ka corresponding to the Middle Weichselian (MIS 3). Our results are compatible with existing ESR ages on three sets of Portlandia arctica shells from the central part of the lowland; the shells had been incorporated into glacial deposits during later glacial advances. Finally, our findings largely support ice-free conditions during the Early and Middle Weichselian in the middle and southern part of central Latvia.

Powszechnie stosowana metoda emisji światła białego wykorzystująca technologię LED-ową opiera się na użyciu luminoforu oraz emitera półprzewodnikowego z zakresu długości fali 440–460 nm (barwa niebieska). W wyniku zjawiska fotoluminescencji luminofor oparty na krysztale YAG-u z domieszkami ceru emituje szerokie spektrum z zakresu widzialnego o barwie zielonożółtej. Promieniowanie będące wynikiem fotoluminescencji, mieszając się ze źródłem wymuszającym daje barwę białą o temperaturze barwowej zależnej od typu luminoforu. W artykule przeprowadzone zostały badania dotyczące zarówno sprawności konwersji samego luminoforu jak i odpowiedzi spektralnej na niededykowane wymuszenie zrealizowane emiterami półprzewodnikowymi.
Commonly used white light emmision method utilizing LED technology depends mostly on luminophore and wavelenght 440–460 nm (blue) semicondutor emiter use. Emission of the wide visible spectrum, greenish yellow in colour, is an effect of fotoluminescence in cerium doped YAG cristal based luminophore. As the effect of fotoluminescence, radiation interferes with source radiation, resulting in white colour light with colour temperature depending on luminophore type. The article presents the research on both conversion efficency of the luminophore and the spectra response for the nondedicated forcing, realised by usage of semiconductor emitters.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of fabrication conditions and neodymium co-doping on the physical properties of (Pb0.98La0.02)(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.98O3, known as PLZT:Nd3+ ceramics. All ceramic powders of these materials were synthesized by the conventional mixed oxide method, from the high purity raw materials (>99.9%). The bulk ceramic samples were sintered by the pressure less sintering and the hot-uniaxial pressing techniques. The study gives a detailed account of the relationships between doping and preparing conditions on the dielectric and optical properties of obtained ceramic materials. Optimal conditions of PLZT:Nd3+ preparation as well as Nd3+ activator concentration were determined in relation to the potential opto-electronic applications.
Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie wpływu warunków wytwarzania i zastosowanej domieszki neodymu na właściwości fizyczne ceramiki (Pb0.98La0.02)(Zr0.65Ti0.35)0.98O3, określanej mianem PLZT:Nd3+. Wszystkie proszki przygotowanych składów syntetyzowano metodą konwencjonalną, z tlenków o wysokiej czystości (>99.9%). Próbki ceramiczne zagęszczano techniką swobodnego spiekania i jednoosiowego prasowania na gorąco. Wykonane badania dały szczegółowy opis zależności między stosowaną domieszką oraz przyjętymi warunkami wytwarzania oraz wpływu na dielektryczne i optyczne właściwości otrzyma- nych materiałów ceramicznych. Optymalne warunki przygotowania PLZT:Nd3+, jak również zastosowane stężenia aktywatora Nd3+ zostały określone w odniesieniu do potencjalnych zastosowań optoelektronicznych.

The European loess profiles provides evidence of changes in climate in the last glacial cycle. The final stage of loess accumulation took place in the youngest part of the last glacial (28 to 12 ka BP). Loess accumulated in two periods: from 28 to 18 ka BP and from 18 to 13 ka BP. These two stages were separated by a short phase of weaker aeolian activity and weak pedogenesis (initial tundra gleyed soils). The loess sedimentation rate can be defined as a mass accumulation rate (MAR ex pressed in g/m2/year). This value was calculated by Frechen et al. (2003) for several dozen loess sites across western and central Europe. In this paper we calculate the MAR for several loess sites in Poland and Ukraine. The MAR distribution across Poland and Ukraine is uneven in these two intervals. The MAR values oscillate between 100 to several thou sand g/m2/year. They markedly in crease eastwards, which may be explained by the latitudinal gradient of periglacial climate in the LateWeichselian (= Late Vistulian). The MAR distribution along a N-S trend confirms its large range in western and central Europe. However, the most easterly profiles (Polish and Ukrainian ones) show less variable thick nesses as the MAR was stable at a relatively low level from several hundred to more than a thou sand g/m2/year. This stability of the MAR characterized both loess-forming intervals in this part of Europe.

Fibre lasers and inherently rare-earth-doped optical fibers nowadays pass through a new period of their progress aiming at high efficiency of systems and their high power. In this paper, we deal with the preparation of silica fibers doped with erbium and Al2O3 nanocrystals and the characterization of their optical properties. The fibers were prepared by the extended Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) method from starting chlorides or oxide nanopowders. Conventional as well as modified approaches led to a nanocrystalline mullite phase formation in the fiber cores in which erbium is dissolved. The proposed modified approach based on starting nanopowders led to improved geometry of preforms and fibers and consequently to the improvement of their background attenuation. Such nanocrystal -doped fibers can be used for ASE sources. Further improvement of fiber optical properties can be expected.

Fluorescence is one of the most commonly used methods of biodetection, mainly due to the high sensitivity, non-invasiveness, simplicity, and also due to the availability of the whole range of powerful light sources, a wide range of photodetectors, and numerous and sensitive measuring methods. From the point of view of biodetection and bioimaging, the important characteristics of such fluorophores are large Stokes shift, narrow absorption/emission lines as well as stable and efficient luminescence. Traditional organic dyes applied in biology reveal very fast photobleaching and limited opportunities for simultaneous detection of many biomolecules, what stimulate development of new fluorescent markers. Fast and intensive development of nanotechnology and chemical engineering observed in recent years, aims at designing the nanophosphors or luminescent nanoplatforms, that demonstrate desirable properties and devised functionality. However, new phosphors are not included yet in broad practical applications, mainly because of the need to adapt the measuring apparatus so as to fully exploit their potential. From among the fluorescent nano-particles, silica dye doped nanoparticles, quantum dots, nanocolloidal metallic nanoparticles, and lanthanide doped nanoluminophores show the largest application potential. This article discusses the unique physico-chemical properties of lanthanide doped nanoparticles, which beside very long luminescence lifetimes and narrow emission bands, enable to obtain a visible emission under the near infrared photoexcitation (called anti-Stokes emission), offering improved sensitivity, stability, repeatability and accuracy of the fluorescent biodetection and bioimaging methods. In this review, physico-chemical properties of lanthanide doped nanoluminophores and many examples of their biological applications have been discussed. The first chapter presents spectral characteristics of rare-earth ions with particular regard to the mechanism of energy transfer and up-conversion, which is a fundamental difference and the decisive advantage compared with other known fluorescent markers. The luminescent properties of lantanides are demonstrated based on the most commonly used nanomaterials singly doped with Eu^3+ and Tb^3+ and the codoped matrices, like Yb^3+-Tm^3+, Yb^3+-Er^3+or Yb^3+-Ho^3+ co-doped phosphores. The features of these materials are best suited from the point of view of biodetection and bioimaging. The next chapter gives an overview of the applications of lanthanide doped nanoluminophores in biological sciences. Different types of hetero-/homo-genous tests and luminesce based sensors for pH, CO_2, the level of glucose, and other analytes are presented. Then, basic aspects of bioimaging, photodynamic and thermo-therapy, nanotermometry as well as nano-bio-technology platforms have been summarized. In conclusion suggestions of new research directions and new biological applications of lanthanide doped nanoparticles have been presented.

The article presents physicochemical, thermal and spectroscopic properties of two different glass systems: TeO2-GeO2-PbO-PbF2- BaO-Nb2O5-LaF3 and SiO2-Al2O3-Sb2O3, co-doped with Yb3+/Tm3+ ions. Blue upconversion luminescence at a wavelength of 478 nm corresponding to the thulium 1G43H6 transition was observed under 976 nm pump radiation in both of the co-doped glasses. This indicated the existence of efficient Yb3+ ⇥ Tm3+ energy transfer via three-photon absorption mechanism. Thermal and optical results substantiate the claim for practical applicability of the manufactured glasses in design of optical fiber sources.

The range of variability of the fluorescence properties of marine phytoplankton in different trophic types of seas and at different depths in the sea is analysed theoretically. An attempt is also made to interpret artificially induced in situ fluorescence measured with submersible fluorometers. To do this, earlier optical models of light absorption by phytoplankton (see Woźniak et al. 2000, this volume) and actual empirical data were applied. A straightforward theoretical model of artificially photoinduced phytoplankton fluorescence accounting for the complex influence of different photophysiological characteristics of phytoplankton and the optical characteristics of the instrument has been worked out. A physical method of determining chlorophyll a concentrations in seawater from fluorescence measured in situ with contact fluorometers can be based on this model.

W badaniach wykorzystano metodę długożyciowej fotoindukowanej luminescencji (DFL) w celu wykazania podobieństwa między alkalicznymi roztworami substancji humusowych (SH) wyekstrahowanych z próbek torfu niskiego (turzycowego) i wysokiego (sfagnowego) a wyciągami "substancji humusopodobnych", uzyskanych z próbek gatunków roślin z rodzajów Carex i Sphagnum. Wyciągi zarówno z torfu, jak i roślin torfotwórczych wykazują zjawisko długożyciowej fotoindukowanej luminescencji w zakresie widzialnym.
The aim of the study was to use the long-term photoinduced luminescence method to show similarity between alkaline extracts from low-moor and high-moor peat samples and alkaline extracts from peat forming plants: Carex and Sphagnum. All studied peat and peat-forming plant extracts showed the phenomenon of long-term photoinduced luminescence in the visible range of wavelengths.

Bioluminescence, the phenomenon of light production by living organisms, occurs in forms of life as various as bacteria, fungi and animals. Nevertheless, light-emitting bacteria are the most abundant and widespread of luminescent organisms. Interestingly, most species of such bacteria live in marine environments. In this article, the biochemical mechanism of bacterial luminescence and its genetic regulation are summarized. Although the biochemistry and genetics of light emission by cells have been investigated in detail, the biological role of bacterial luminescence has remained obscure. Here, we discuss recent discoveries that shed new light on this problem. Finally, we provide examples of how bacterial luminescence can be employed in marine biotechnology, especially in the detection of toxic and mutagenic pollution in aquatic environments.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań materiałów luminescencyjnych, na osnowie granatu itrowo-glinowego, domieszkowanych jonami ceru i chromu, przeznaczonych do nowoczesnych półprzewodnikowych źródeł światła białego. Przeprowadzono pomiary charakterystyk wzbudzeniowo-emisyjnych luminoforów występujących w postaci krystalicznej oraz materiału ceramicznego. Analizowano wpływ struktury krystalicznej oraz poziomu domieszkowania na charakterystyki emisyjne potencjalnych luminoforów.
As a class of inorganic phosphors, yttrium aluminium garnet (Y₃Al₅O₁₂,YAG) has received considerable attention because of its applications. YAG is commonly used as a host material in various solid state lasers, cathode ray tubes and as a scintillator. In this article we focus on luminescence of synthetic crystalline and ceramic phosphors of the garnet group for white light emitting diodes (LEDs). The article places importance on methods of white light receiving. This sheds light on interesting trends connected with solid state lightening issues. Exciting emitting spectra of chromium, magnesium and rare earth elements doped (active ions) YAG were gathered in order to compare results and find major differences between particular samples. Moreover, we have analysed influence of crystalline structure and doping's level on emitting characteristics of potential phosphors for semiconductor sources of white light.

Opis:
W pracy zastosowano dwie różne biofizyczne metody badawcze celem sprawdzenia czy są one dostatecznie czułe na wykrywanie absorpcji jonów metali ciężkich przez makrofity wodne (makroalgi Nitellopsis obtusa) w krótkim czasie po ich ekspozycji na działanie tych jonów. Obie techniki pomiarowe są całkowicie nieinwazyjne, dzięki czemu można je stosować in vivo. Pierwsza z tych technik to monitorowanie parametrów elektrycznych roślin za pomocą zmiennoprądowego mostka elektrycznego przy użyciu czterech elektrod zewnętrznych w roztworze (dwóch napięciowych i dwóch prądowych). Druga technika pomiarowa polega na rejestracji ultrasłabego (niewidzialnego gołym okiem) promieniowania elektromagnetycznego (UWL) z tych roślin w zakresie od bliskiego ultrafioletu poprzez przedział widzialny do bliskiej podczerwieni. Do badań testowych użyto dwóch organicznych związków ołowiu, tj. octanu ołowiu i chlorotrimetyloołowiu. Zmiany wartości parametrów elektrycznych jak i natężenia emisji fotonowej roślin świadczyły o poborze ołowiu przez rośliny z zanieczyszczonego środowiska. Możliwa była ocena czasu, po którym występowała absorpcja ołowiu powodująca zmiany w komórkach roślinnych na poziomie błon komórkowych, jak i oszacowanie tego poboru, który zależał od zastosowanego stężenia organicznych związków ołowiu. Wyniki badań pokazały interesującą zależność, a mianowicie, dla małych stężeń organicznych związków ołowiu w środowisku, tj. poniżej 1 mM, w czasie 5-cio godzinnej ekspozycji roślin na ich działanie, widoczne były wyraźne zmiany parametrów elektrycznych komórek roślinnych, podczas gdy ultrasłaba luminescencja tych roślin pozostawała na stałym poziomie. Przykładowo dla octanu ołowiu, potencjał spoczynkowy błony komórkowej w zakresie stężeń 0–100 mM zmieniał się od -140 mV do -175 mV, a rezystancja błony wzrastała 1,5 razy w stosunku do wartości wyjściowej dla stężeń od 12 do 50 mM. Dla stężeń związków ołowiu powyżej 1 mM, metoda elektryczna okazywała się mało przydatna, gdyż pojedyncze komórki ulegały szybkiemu załamywaniu się w trakcie pomiarów. Intensywność ultrasłabego „świecenia” roślin dla wyższych stężeń octanu ołowiu dochodzących do 10 mM wzrastała gwałtownie (nawet czterokrotnie) w okresie pierwszych 20 minut ekspozycji. Natomiast dla chlorotrimetyloołowiu efekt wzrostu UWL był bardzo łagodny i następował dopiero po około 40 minutach od momentu ekspozycji. Tak duże stężenia związków organicznych ołowiu w środowisku są czynnikiem wywołującym szok, stres organizmów roślinnych. Związany jest on najprawdopodobniej z gwałtowną erupcją wolnych rodników prowadzącą do peroksydacji lipidów i nieodwracalnymi zmianami letalnymi, jak sugeruje wielu autorów w literaturze naukowej. Szczegółowe badania biochemiczne w tym zakresie mogłyby pomóc w rozstrzygnięciu tego problemu.
In this paper the non-invasive biophysical methods were applied to assess the organic lead compounds absorption by freshwater algae Nitellopsis obtusa. Two biophysical techniques were used: the electrical method AC bridge with four external electrodes and the luminescent with the registration of ultraweak photon radiation emitted by plants. They allow to study the electrical and luminescent cell membrane properties. Research was performed with the lead acetate and trimethyllead chloride to verify whether algae cells were able to absorb Pb ions from water medium contaminated by these compounds. When the concentration of lead acetate solution increased up to 0–100 mM the membrane resting potential changed from -140 mV to -175 mV. On the other hand, the electrical resistance of cell membrane (for 12–50 mM) increased with exposure time exceeding its starting value up to 1.5 times. In contrast to these electrical changes, the intensity of ultraweak luminescence was constant at concentrations below 1 mM lead acetate. These results with comparison of literature data can suggest that there was no lipid peroxidation in cell membranes for such organic lead compound concentrations. Chemiluminescent responses of algae were observed in the first 5 hours of experiments for lead concentration higher than 1mM. The luminescence intensity increased immediately for both reagents, but no more than 4 times for concentrations of 1–10 mM lead acetate. For tetramethyl-lead chloride, the luminescence intensity started to increase slowly about 40 minutes after injection. These results with comparison of literature data may suggest lipid peroxidation in cell membrane for higher, toxic lead concentrations. It means that higher concentrations of lead can trigger lethal processes in the living cells. We conclude that the return of the electrical and chemiluminescent plant parameters to the starting values (before the action of lead ions) can indicate whether living cells are able to cope with detoxifying from heavy metals and whether they can survive when exposed to certain concentration of lead compounds. Algae of Nitellopsis obtusa in the first stage of exposure (5 hours) are able to accumulate organic compounds of lead without essential perturbations only up to specified concentrations (for example 1 mM of lead acetate). For higher lead content, an increase of ultraweak luminescence occurred which was probably associated with free radical productions and lipid peroxidation, as many researchers suggested.

Opis:
Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs) are objects with a size less than 10 nm that have the ability to emit radiation in the visible range from blue to red depending on the excitation radiation used. Quantum dots are used in in vitro bioimaging of cell structures or creation of biosensors. In contrast to classic nanodots, which are obtained from simple sulphides, selenides or metal tellurides, carbon quantum dots are constructed from a non-toxic, biocompatible carbon core, thanks to which it is possible to apply quantum carbon dots in bio-imaging in-vitro or in-vivo biological structures with minimal cytotoxic effect on cells. The aim of the research was to obtain carbon nanodots capable of emitting fluorescence using lignin from waste biomass. The CQDs were functionalized with amino-acids. The result of the work was to obtain a series of CQDs with advanced luminescence properties using hydrothermal and microwave assisted methods. Ready products were investigated over their cytotoxicity.
Kropki kwantowe węgla (Carbon Quantum Dots – CQD) to obiekty o rozmiarze mniejszym niż 10 nm, które mają zdolność emitowania promieniowania w zakresie widzialnym od od niebieskiego do czerwonego w zależności od zastosowanego promieniowania wzbudzenia. Kropki kwantowe stosuje się w bioobrazowaniu in vitro struktur komórkowych lub tworzeniu bioczujników. W przeciwieństwie do klasycznych nanodotów, które są otrzymywane z prostych siarczków, selenków lub tellurków metali, kropki kwantowe węgla są zbudowane z nietoksycznego, biokompatybilnego rdzenia węglowego, dzięki czemu możliwe jest zastosowanie kwantowych kropek węgla w bioobrazowanie struktur biologicznych in vitro lub in vivo przy minimalnym działaniu cytotoksycznym na komórki. Celem badań było uzyskanie nanodotów węglowych zdolnych do emitowania fluorescencji przy użyciu ligniny z biomasy odpadowej. CQD sfunkcjonalizowano aminokwasami. Rezultatem prac było uzyskanie serii CQD o zaawansowanych właściwościach luminescencyjnych z zastosowaniem metod hydrotermalnych i mikrofalowych. Gotowe produkty badano pod kątem ich cytotoksyczności.

Opis:
Optical chemical sensors enlarge the definition of a classical chemical sensor; they present results in two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) aspect. They can determine parameters of micro and macro scale objects without using a lot of electronic equipment. This article is focused on sensors based on porphyrin derivatives and europium complexes, being the most frequently used substances sensitive to oxygen concentration, pressure and temperature changes. Along with the presentation of characteristics of substances employed to sensors’ construction, also the general principle of luminescent sensors operation, composition and operation range of selected mono- and bifunctional luminescent sensors are described; moreover the selected achievements, such as the “traffic light” sensor are shown.

Presented are the results of research into the fluvio-aeolian sedimentary succession at the site of Postolin in the Żmigród Basin, southwest Poland. Based on lithofacies analysis, textural analysis, Thermoluminescence and Infrared-Optical Stimulated Luminescence dating and GIS analysis, three lithofacies units were recognised and their stratigraphic succession identified: 1) the lower unit was deposited during the Pleni-Weichselian within a sand-bed braided river functioning under permafrost conditions within the central part of the alluvial fan; 2) the middle unit is the result of aeolian deposition and fluvial redeposition on the surface of the fan during long-term permafrost and progressive decrease of humidity of the climate at the turn of the Pleni to the Late Weichselian; 3) the upper unit accumulated following the development of longitudinal dunes at the turn of the Late Weichselian to the Holocene; the development of dunes was interrupted twice by the form being stabilised by vegetation and soil development.

Przeprowadzono pomiary charakterystyk wzbudzeniowo-emisyjnych i wyznaczono podstawowe parametry optyczne luminoforów.
In this paper we focus on high-impact luminescence of Eu²⁺ or Pr²⁺doped ZrO₂ nanocrystals stabilized by Y₂O₃. As a class of inorganic luminescent phosphor, wide-band gap ZrO₂ has received considerable attention because of its utility for existing and future optoelectronic devices as a suitable host for rare-earth ions. In the article were gathered Exciting-emitting spectra of nanocrystals obtained by the hydrothermal microwave-driven process are presented. All investigated characteristics indicate the usability of studied materials as red luminescent phosphors.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane, najciekawsze rodzaje betonu architektonicznego, które oprócz walorów dekoracyjnych mają funkcje dodatkowe. W tekście opisano warunki wdrażania nowych technologii, takich jak fotobeton, beton fotokatalityczny, beton transparentny i beton z eksponowanym kruszywem. Te rodzaje betonu wykonuje się dzięki odpowiedniemu pod względem jakościowym i ilościowym doborowi podstawowych komponentów betonu, lecz także dzięki komponentom dodatkowym, które, w połączeniu ze specjalną technologią produkcji i osadzania, pozwalają na uzyskanie unikalnych właściwości, takich jak: odwzorowania obrazu na powierzchni – fotobeton, możliwość redukcji tlenków azotu – beton fotokatalityczny, przezroczystość – beton transparentny lub „powierzchnie podświetlone” – beton z eksponowanym kruszywem. Przedstawione w artykule rodzaje niewątpliwie różnią się od zwykłego betonu, choćby ze względu na jakość, i przyciągają uwagę dzięki unikalnej powierzchni i oddziaływaniu na środowisko.
The paper presents selected, the most interesting types of architectural concrete, which have additional functions in addition to their decorative value. The conditions for implementing new technologies such as photoconcrete, photocatalytic concrete, transparent and luminescent aggregate concrete were described. These concretes are made due to the appropriate qualitative and quantitative selection of basic concrete components but also additional components, which, combined with a special production and embedding technology, allow to obtain special properties such as: image mapping on the surface – photoconcrete, the possibility of reducing nitrogen oxides – photocatalytic concrete, transparency – transparent concrete, or “luminous surfaces” – concrete with luminescent aggregate. These are certainly different than any concrete, if only because of quality and attract attention form the visible surface and the preset function in the environment.

The need for new, chemically and physically stable luminescent materials operating with UV excitations has stimulated research on luminescence properties of doped sol–gel material. In this work, it has been presented a technology of production of silica gels doped with organic molecules, lanthanide compounds and organic/inorganic composites. Optical properties of these materials as functions of temperature, concentration and excitation wavelength are presented. Dynamics of excited states has been discussed based on the decay times and emission efficiencies data. Mechanisms of ligand-to-metal energy transfer as well as other processes affecting emission efficiency are considered. Silica sol–gels doped with di-aminoacid derivatives of porphyrins: PP(Ser)2(Arg)2, PP(Ala)2(Arg)2, PP(Met)2(Arg)2, where Met, Arg and Ser denote methionine, serine and arginine aminoacids, respectively, and H2TTMePP {tetrakis[4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]-21H,23H-porphine} have been obtained and spectroscopically studied. These materials can find applications as phosphors or sensors of UV irradiation.

In the Middle Gauja Lowland, northeast Latvia, dunes are distributed over a vast glaciolacustrine plain that formed during the retreat of the Fennoscandian ice sheet. Such a direct contact between aeolian and glaciolacustrine sediments can be used to infer depositional settings and decipher to what extent these sediments bear an aeolian component. Our proxies, although preliminary, reveal a limited range of variation in grain-size parameters, a significant presence of quartz grains with silica precipitation and matt-surface grains of various rounding degrees and massive structure combined with horizontal lamination. These are indicative of periglacial-aeolian depositional conditions in the foreland of the Linkuva ice-marginal zone. Sedimentary characteristics do not match a single luminescence date of 9.2±0.6 ka, which significantly postdates the minimum age of the Linkuva ice-marginal zone with 10Be ages between 15.4 and 12.0 ka. Whether deposition started directly after drainage of the Middle Gauja ice-dammed lake or if there is a gap of 2.8–6.2 ka is a matter of debate; only future studies at higher OSL resolution could resolve this.
