    Opis:
    The texts included in the volume deal with the issues concerning the creation and circulation of literary works in the Polish People’s Republic. The elements of a literary career, such as recognition of an author, his or her descent or pro‑state activity, are the subject of study. The authors persuade that the social position of a writer did not always correspond with the artistic value of his or her work and that it is possible to reconstruct the transformations of the cultural politics in the Polish People’s Republic on the basis of the examination of the fate of the books handed in for evaluation to the office of censorship. The analysis of the specific careers proves the thesis that literature in the communist system could not be situated outside the cultural context and the external factors had a significant impact on the final form of the work.

    The article addresses the polemic between two Polish writers Jerzy Andrzejewski and Jerzy Zawieyski, whose outlook was significantly affected by the war experience. When in 1945 Andrzejewski was influenced by Marxist ideology, Zawieyski turned to religion and gained recognition as a Catholic writer. The author of the article asserts that Andrzejewski’s Propozycje teraźniejszości (published after 1945) and Zawieyski’s Kantata anielska (1948) represent a literary polemic determined by its biographical and socio-political contexts.

    The theme of this article is the motives of homeliness and taming place in prose by Zygmunt Trziszka, which relates to Polish Western Lands. According to official cultural policy, the writers were supposed to present the lands attached to Poland after World War II as „eternally Polish”. According to this propaganda, socalled Regained Territories were to be homeliness. This assumption was to authenticate about the monolithicity the state and legitimize the postwar displacements. Meanwhile, the settlers has just tamed this lands. They arrived to a place which for many of them was unfamiliar and temporary. In the stories of Zygmunt Trziszka can be seen implementation of propaganda discourse, but also attempt to denial it. Ambivalence in the perception of post-Yalta reality make sprose of Trziszka i san interesting case – its allows to cap-ture differences between the postulates of state power and individual experiences of forced migrants.

    Artykuł stanowi omówienie książki Artura Hellicha Gry z autobiografią: przemilczenia, intelektualizacje, parodie, która dotyczy różnorodnych strategii przetwarzania paradygmatu gatunkowego autobiografii. Hellich analizuje odmiany gier z tradycyjnym modelem wyznania, reprezentowane przede wszystkim przez pisarzy żydowskiego pochodzenia, zwłaszcza Polaków publikujących w okresie PRL. Materiał badawczy obejmuje utwory Kazimierza Brandysa, Stanisława Lema, Romana Zimanda, Artura Sandauera, Philipa Rotha, Paula Karla Feyerabenda oraz Michała Głowińskiego. Artykuł ukazuje naczelną w Grach z autobiografią kategorię konwencji na tle przekształceń teorii literatury XX wieku. Wyeksponowane zostały te praktyki literaturoznawcze, które podejmują próby definiowania intymistyki jako zjawiska ponadgatunkowego.
    This article analyses Artur Hellich’s book Gry z autobiografią: przemilczenia, intelektualizacje, parodie (Games with autobiography: concealments, intellectualisations, parodies), which outlines various strategies for processing the autobiography genre paradigm. Hellich analyses the variations of playing with the traditional model of confession represented primarily by writers of Jewish origin, especially Polish authors publishing in the PRL (Polish People’s Republic) period. The research material includes works of Kazimierz Brandys, Stanisław Lem, Roman Zimand, Artur Sandauer, Philip Roth, Paul Karl Feyerabend and Michał Głowiński. The article shows category of conventions against the background of transformations of twentieth-century literary theories. Literary criticism practices that attempt to define intimacy as a supra-species phenomenon have been highlighted.

    This article seeks to identify some of the uses of „the index of books to be immediately excluded” issued by the Ministry of Culture and Arts in 1951. At that time, decrees of the sort specified inventories of books permitted to be included on the shelves of Polish. In the process, many books were to be removed for good both from libraries and from native heritage. Additionally, the procedure of “purification”, as it was called by the officials, bore significant similarities to the repressive practices of the German and Russian occupants used during WWII. The author argues that analogies were drawn wittingly or impulsively at least for the effectiveness of German and Russian inventions. The 1951 list of books forbidden for the Polish common reader offers their obsolete character as the reason for exclusion. Up to date did not mean “contemporary” but up to the demands of state authorities. Administrative pressure to reflect the political agenda converted books into somewhat fatter newspapers and in this way seriously damaged book, which had always been the important vehicle of national and cultural memory.

    Artykuł Bieg życia Alojzego Śliwy (przyczynek do biografii działacza warmińsko-polskiego) jest krytyczną rekonstrukcją zarysu biografii polskiego Warmiaka, który żył w latach 1885–1969. Był działaczem narodowym i społecznym, warmińsko-polskim rymopisem, regionalnym publicystą, folklorystą. Wykonywał zawód krawca oraz policjanta. Brał udział w I wojnie światowej jako niemiecki żołnierz, ale już w 1920 roku był działaczem plebiscytowym po stronie polskiej. Jego zasługi doceniły władze Polski międzywojennej. Po 1945 roku Śliwa jednoznacznie opowiedział się za Polską Ludową, zachowując swoje głębokie przywiązanie do Kościoła katolickiego. Badania nad jego biografią i twórczością umożliwią odpowiedź na pytanie, czy i w jakim stopniu dorobek i znaczenie Alojzego Śliwy w kulturze Warmii i Mazur jest wartością zmanipulowaną na użytek propagandy i polityki narodowościowej w regionie.
    The article is a critical reconstruction of the outline of a Polish Warmian’s biography, who lived in 1885–1969. He was a national and social activist, Warmian- Polish writer, regional publicist and a folklorist. He worked as a tailor and a police officer. He took part in First World War as a German soldier, but as soon as 1920 he became a Polish plebiscite worker. His achievements have been rewarded by interwar Polish authorities. After 1945 Śliwa unambiguously approved of Polish People’s Republic, remaining deeply connected to the Catholic Church. Studies over his biography and works provide the answer to the question: If and how deeply is Śliwa’s work in Warmia-Mazurian’s culture a value twisted to the regional nationalist propaganda?
