The paper discusses musicality of Sceny łóżkowe (Bedtime scenes) by Adam Wiedemann understood as the constructive and topical dominant of the book. The writer`s ‘dream diary’ (including a ‘testimonio’ notation of dreams from 1987 to 2000), simulating the poetics of a personal document, in fact draws the reader into multilevel intertextual games. The consequent amalgamation of high and pop culture and the poetics of collage or sampling organize the dreams records of Sceny łóżkowe. The author analyzes Wiedemann`s work as a manifesto of panfictionalism and constructivistical ‘world mak-ing’ (cf. Siegfried J. Schmidt, Ernst von Glaserfeld, Steven Tötsöy de Zepetnek, Nelson Goodman). This in turn results in revealing the false referentialism or, more precisely autopoietic self-referentialism of Wiedemann`s writing, thus showing how unuseful traditional psychoanalisys and interpretation of dreams are for analyzing the manifestly constructivistical fabric of the writer’s humoristic and grotesque oneiric projections

The article addresses the issue of various interpretative contexts of Jonathan Littell’s best-selling novel The Kindly Ones (Les Bienveillantes). In particular, it deals with ethical and rhetorical consequences of the novel’s structure. The book’s form is based on a ba-roque suite – thus, the successive chapters are entitled: Toccata, Allemande I and Allemande II, Courante, Minuet (roundel), Aria and Gigue. The analysis of the meaning of the tech-nique employed by Littell yields a conclusion that there is no relation between the plot structure and the suite form. The ‘musical’ concept is used only to strengthen the fictionality of the novel. This way, Littell emphasizes that the foundation on which the monologue of his hero is built is at the same time documentary and purely ‘literary’. Thus, Littell’s novel only ‘pretends’ to be ‘a musical literary text’ – literature constructed by using musical forms. The last issue addressed in the article is the ethical ambivalence of Littell’s concept. Is it appropriate to ‘compose a suite about the Holocaust’? Does it locate The Kindly Ones near the sublime or kitsch? Or maybe both?

Steamboats transformed rivers in 19th-century United States, providing what many people considered a kind of mastery over nature. In literature from the period, while most writers marveled at or exulted in that perceived mastery, some questioned the origins of the reputed conquest. Did it result from human ingenuity? divine inspiration? a deal with the devil? Amid all the fog, smoke, and various other vapors associated with the steamboat, vivid stories, compelling dramas, and comic searches for meaning took shape, and no literary work captured the tension informing, uncertainty surrounding, and ramifications emerging from this instance of technological innovation as powerfully as The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade (1857). Herman Melville’s last novel, The Confidence-Man explores the author’s notion that “Books of fiction” can perhaps give readers more truth, “more reality, than real life can show.” Literature, for Melville, was an opportunity to reconsider the nature of things and our means of understanding that nature. In The Confidence-Man, he presented readers with a different view of the Mississippi River and the curious vessels working its waters. The novel imagined The Devil himself to be on board the steamboat, imperiling the soul of America.

IMAGES IN EXILE? – Literary Reinterpretations of Paintings Śnieciński highlighted and analyzed three different strategies of using and reinterpreting images described by prominent contemporary writers. In novels entitled In Praise of the Stepmother and Don Rigobert’s Papers by M.V. Llosa, paintings are considered as catalyst for literary narration. Llosa takes organizes a game with dual nature images; he plays with the relationship between mental images and the media. P. Quignard’s strategy is ‘thinking with images’. His Night Sex is based on quotes from concrete paintings. He combines text with visual narration. The internal dialogue between ‘quoted’ images allows the writer to formulate his questions about sources of imagery. G. Perec’s novel entitled Life: User’s Manual includes images, which are an important element in life-project of one of the characters; they only considered as a form of literary scenario. The scenario for life includes commentary on many phenomena and trends in contemporary art (eg. conceptualism, minimalism, performance art). In all of three strategies, paintings did not lose their identity, although they have been deprived of their roots in materiality. Images gained different potential for action, a new form of existence.

Celem artykułu jest poruszenie problemu zastosowania instrumentarium krytyki feministycznej do badań nad literaturą polskiego oświecenia. Jak dotąd, nie cieszy się ona popularnością w środowisku rodzimych znawców tej epoki. Wskazano zalety feminizmu w literaturoznawstwie jak również potencjalne zagrożenia, związane z aplikowaniem kategorii gender do badań nad literaturą dawną. Największym zagrożeniem wydaje się nieuwzględnianie kontekstu historycznego i społeczno-kulturowego. Przywołano prace odnoszące się do innych epok lub literatur obcych, które mogą stanowić punkt wyjścia do badań piśmiennictwa polskiego oświecenia. Jedną z nich jest monografia Marka Jastrzębca-Mosakowskiego, zatytułowana Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia. Wymieniono badaczy polskiego oświecenia, którzy dostrzegają potencjał gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska). Wskazano obszary badań i możliwości, jakie daje użycie narzędzi krytyki feministycznej. Spodziewane efekty to przywrócenie imienia anonimowych dotąd autorek, odkrycie lub ponowne odczytanie ich twórczości, otwarcie nowych przestrzeni dla jej opisu i interpretacji.
The article raises the problem of the use of the feminist criticism apparatus in research on the Polish Enlightenment literature. The method has not been popular among Polish experts of the epoch. The article discusses the advantages of feminism in literature studies as well as the potential risks associated with the application of the category gender to research on early literature. The greatest threat seems to be the failure to take into account the historical and socio-cultural context. The paper refers to other epochs or foreign literature, which may constitute a starting point for research into the literature of Polish Enlightenment. One such work is a monograph by Marek Jastrzębiec-Mosakowski entitled Strategie wymazywania. Kobiece bohaterki w męskich tekstach francuskiego Oświecenia [Strategies of erasure. Female heroines in the male texts of French Enlightenment]. The article lists researchers of Polish Enlightenment who notice the potential of gender studies (Barbara Judkowiak, Weronika Pawlik-Kwaśniewska) and  points to the areas of research and possibilities offered by the use of feminist criticism tools. The article aims at restoring the names of the previously anonymous female authors, discovering or re-reading their work, as well as opening new spaces for their description and interpretation.

Rozpoznania François Bruneta (Photography and Literature) dostarczają poważnych argumentów świadczących o owocnym przyswajaniu literatury przez fotografię i ewolucji hybrydycznych mediów, w których ani fotografia, ani literatura nie są centralnymi figurami. W artykule Wizualne i werbalne relacje we wspomnieniach Annie Leibovitz i Sally Mann analizuję najnowsze projekty autobiograficzne dwóch amerykańskich artystek-fotografów, w których problematyka interakcji fotografii i literatury jako mediów dokumentu osobistego została wyeksponowana w sposób wielowymiarowy. Sally Mann, absolwentka kierunku „creative writing”, koncentruje uwagę nie tylko na kreowaniu narracji wokół własnych, dobrze znanych portretów. Tworzy również znakomity komentarz krytyczny projektujący możliwe rozumienia zależności pomiędzy słowem a obrazem fotograficznym w narracji fotografa-pisarza-krytyka w dobie tzw. „memoir boom” w USA. Wykorzystanie odniesień literackich w fototekście Pilgrimage Annie Leibovitz demonstruje przyległość tropów literackich w pracach fotograficznych, realizowanych jako intymne próby oswajania świata. W konkluzji stwierdzam, iż współczesne narracje autobiograficzne fotografów sytuujące się pomiędzy literaturą i fotografią stanowią specyficzny obszar użycia rosnącego potencjału strategii relacyjnych.

Our task is to recognize and respect this potential, to help the student through the content of the learning material, to find their own ways, how to develop the potential in their own favor and for social acceptance. It seems absurd, but it is logical that this potential of individuals can only be recognized by allowing them to express themselves in their own way. In order for them to have the freedom of choice of activities, content and social relationships in the learning process to reach the goals they set for themselves, including those needed for social acceptance of themselves.

The article is an attempt of analysis and interpretation of the “Young Poland“ comedy written by Włodzimierz Perzyński in psychopathological or psychoanalytical perspective. The author draws reader’s attention to artistic achievements of Włodzimierz Perzyński who was a Polish novelist, comedy writer, columnist and poet, satirist and ironist and he died eighty years ago. The article is informally built out of two parts: Michel Foucault’s cultural criticism is a context of the first part, in the second one the author uses � � � � � � �general psychoanalytical theories of � � Sigmund Freud and Karen Horney. A neurotic personality, neurotic disturbances in the relations between people and activities of individuals in the different social situations are an object of analysis and interpretation. The author discussing one of the most famous Perzyński’s comedies tries to show that the Polish writer’s plays are interesting and opening a lot of perspectives of interpretation.

The main subject of the review is Mykola Ilnytskyi’s book Reading and Re-reading…, which is very important research on Ukrainian literature in contemporary humanities. The book includes four chapters in all of which fundamental interests of the researcher are described. Mykola Ilnytskyi reviews the classic texts of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko ( chapter 1 ), and the literature of the first part of the 20th century ( chapter 2 ), as well as contemporary texts ( chapters 3, 4 ). This book is not an extensive view of the history of literature of the 20th century. Its main peculiarity is the delivery of important fragments and episodes of literary history. The essays combine a liberal understanding of the subject and an unobtrusive interpretation of the texts, which reflects the unique ethical culture of the researcher. Mykola Ilnytskyi is clearly aware of the multiplicity of meanings offered byfiction, and therefore does not insist on his own right to the truth, but only offers well-founded and personally verified versions of literary plots.

Artykuł poświęcony jest socjologicznym aspektom interpretacji szczególnego rodzaju tekstów. Ich autorami/autorkami są „ludzie pióra” – pisarze, publicyści itp. Same zaś teksty (głównie literatura dokumentu osobistego, acz nie tylko) nie aspirują do formy powieściowej czy innej wersji fikcji literackiej; jednak autorzy/autorki wykorzystują w nich z pełną świadomością środki stylistyki literackiej i – szerzej – retorycznej. Charakteryzowane w artykule materiały traktowane są jako komunikaty i „występy”. Przyjęto bowiem, że każdy zapoczątkowany przez nadawcę akt komunikowania (a więc także tekst) jest próbą występu w Goffmanowskim rozumieniu tego pojęcia. Artykuł wychodzi od interpretacji proponowanej w eseju Clifforda Geertza, poprzez przypomnienie szans, jakie stwarza poszukiwaniom z zakresu socjologii jakościowej metoda konstruktywna Jana Szczepańskiego, a także niektóre – podane z interpretacyjnymi przykładami – aspekty koncepcji Leo Straussa czy Umberto Eco. Na przykładzie zarysów kilku przykładów historycznych, ale także bardziej współczesnych ilustracji artykuł ma na celu uczulenie socjologicznych interpretatorów na specyfikę analizowanego, a bardziej – niż zwykle się to dzieje – złożonego kontekstualnie i retorycznie występu (w tym tekstu czy innej formy komunikatu). Choć w założeniu opracowanie to ma przede wszystkim wspomóc badawcze zainteresowania tekstami przynależnymi do literatury dokumentu osobistego „ludzi pióra”, to ma on także ambicje – gdy idzie o socjologiczną interpretację Goffmanowskich występów – bardziej ogólne.
The article deals with the sociological aspects of the interpretation of specific texts. Their authors are “men of letters” (writers, publicists). The texts themselves (mainly personal document literature, but not only) do not aspire to the form of a novel or any other version of literary fiction; however, the authors use literary and, more broadly, rhetorical stylistic means with full awareness. The materials described in the article are treated as messages and “performances”. It is assumed that each act of communication (and thus also the text) initiated by the addresser is a performance in Goffman’s understanding of the term. The article starts with the interpretation proposed in Clifford Geertz’s essay, then it discusses the opportunities offered by Jan Szczepański’s constructive method in the field of qualitative sociology, as well as some – given with interpretative examples – aspects of Leo Strauss’ or Umberto Eco’s concept. Using the outlines of several historical but also more contemporary examples, illustrations, the article aims to sensitise sociological interpreters to the specificity of the analyzed and more contextually and rhetorically complex performance (including text or other form of communication). While the article primarily intends to support research interests in texts belonging to the literature of the “men of letters” personal document, it also has more general ambitions when it comes to the sociological interpretation of Goffman’s performances.

У раду се аналитичким методом указује на домете и импликације Павловићевог проучавања српске усмене и средњовековне књижевности. Притом, текст настоји да овај сегмент његове есејистике представи и у контексту ширег Павловићевог есејистичког, али и песничког опуса, истичући њихово плодно и разноврсно кореспондирање. Његови есеји у функцији су смисаоног и вредносног осветљавања наших најстаријих књижевних слојева, чиме се до краја уобличава представа о књижевно-историјском распону српске поезије и искуство јединственог духовног континуитета. Павловићеви Огледи о народној и старој српској поезији представљају пример како ширина интересовања, импресиван интелект, ерудитна компетенција, отворен и откривалачки дух, али и незаобилазан уметнички сензибилитет и неретко поетска експресија, постају замајац нових читања и тумачења, сасвим сигурно драгоцених за будуће генерације читалаца и изучавалаца.
Using the analytical method, the paper points to the extents and implications of Pavlović’s research of Serbian verbal folk and medieval literature. Along with this, the paper tries to present this segment of his essayistic work in the context of the wider Pavlović’s essayistic and poetic opus as well, emphasizing their prolific and versatile corresponding. His essays are in a function of thoughtful and evaluating reflections of our oldest literature strata, which eventually shapes up the image about literature and historical span of Serbian poetry and the experience of a unique spiritual continuity. Pavlović’s Essays on Folk and Old Serbian Poetry (orig. Ogledi o narodnoj i staroj srpskoj poeziji) represent an example of how broadness of interests, an impressive intelect, erudite competency, an open and explorative spirit, but also inevitable artistic sensibility and frequent poetic expression become a trigger for new readings and interpretations surely valuable for new generations of readers and researchers.

Opis:
Reader-response theory is based on the assumption that a literary work takes place in the mutual relationship between the reader and the text. According to this theory, the meaning is constructed through a transaction between the reader and the text within a particular context. Readers assume multiple roles when responding to a variety of forms of literature. The process of developing responses facilitates active and meaningful reading and increases emotional and intellectual participation in the text, which ultimately provides learners with better comprehension and awareness of the text. The potential value of classroom discussions helps learners to express their emotional reactions, to elicit their responses, to nourish their perspectives for furthering depth of their interpretation, to corroborate their opinions and share their responses for building a social relationship. It is crucial that learners are directed to perform more adequately in response to texts and actively engage in dialogues to pose literal and inferential questions, to explore a range of possible meanings and to foster cognitive development and comprehension.

Opis:
The analysis in this article focusses on two of Stanisław Barańczak’s poems in the context of the writer’s biography, i.e. the fact that he was an intellectual, poet, translator and essayist, as well as an opposition activist and one of the co-founders of the Workers’ Defence Committee (Komitet Obrony Robotników). The starting point is a reference to Czesław Miłosz's essays entitled Life on the isles and Immorality of art, in which the Nobel prizewinner ponders the role of the poet in the contemporary world. The poems discussed in this article are presented as one of the possible forms through which the 20th-century ethos of the intellectual is realised.

The interpretation of Stanisław Barańczak’s poem And it’s only that world of pain focuses on the depiction of pain and suffering, the relationship between the writer and reader’s experience, as well as the connection between the human being and nature understood in the broadest possible terms. Particular attention has been given to the subject and the formal discipline of the poem, juxtaposed with the experiences situated on and beyond the boundaries of language.
