MONOGRAPH
HISTORY OF LITERATURE
Opis:
It is difficult to imagine the history of literature devoid of such mode of research expression as monography. It is still a popular form of synthetic expressions (after all the history of literature is condemned to synthesis). At the same time, however, a literary historian can base his actions less and less often on the theoretical-literary reflection. What vectors could turn us today towards a contemporary reading of literary texts – the reading which is far not only from ingenuous naivety but also from dangerous confidence in the power of individual research concepts? Some contemporary postulates of reading ethics give answer to these questions. They induce us to be distant towards any theoretical-literary or ideological prejudices and hence to the responsibility for the research method and the language describing a work of art. It seems that a thought which returns in the reflection of literary studies about the subjectivity of reading, about the necessity of considering the sphere of values in the process of reading (which modern ethics of reading calls for) induces to turn towards interpretation, return to the author and to axiology.

Opis:
The character of Alexander the Great features prominently in ancient Jewish tradition. Of special importance is the passage in Flavius Josephus' 'Antiquitates Iudaicae' (XI 8). The Alexander episode in Josephus is placed within the context of the Jewish-Samaritan conflict as well as within the history of Alexander's conquest of the East: the main aim of this narrative seems to be, as is often the case with Josephus, to incorporate Jewish history into the general history of the Mediterranean peoples. The narrative has several interesting literary features, suggesting that Josephus has probably combined in his narrative two different stories about Alexander: the episode of Alexander's recognition of the One God, placed in Jerusalem; and the rivalry between the temple of Jerusalem and its Samaritan counterpart. Josephus compares Alexander's character to the High Priest's and, paradoxically, much more emphasis is put on the character of the Greek king. Alexander's elevation seems, however, part of a complex strategy meant to elevate and glorify the Jewish nation: Alexander, presented as the ideal and archetypal ruler, is the one who bows down to the God and the High Priest of the Jews. Thus the Jews become, in Alexander's kingdom, a group with special meaning and position.

literature as history
Opis:
This article is an attempt to identify history in an early modern text belonging to the Hindi literary tradition. The theoretical foundations that enable such a venture are to be found in the narrativist philosophy of history, since it afforded equal status to those discourses about the past which do not meet the narrow criteria of world-history. V. Rao, D. Shulman and S. Subrahmanyam, in their work on South India, proposed that an analysis of texture allows history to be identified in those compositions that do not belong to the Western tradition of historiography. It is worth verifying whether their method applies to other literary traditions of India. The same researchers undermined the legitimacy of talking about prose as the only possible way of writing history – by claiming that history is written in the dominant literary genre of a particular community, space and time. Their hypotheses are hereby confronted with passages from Bhūṣan’s Śivrājbhūṣaṇ (1673).

In the line of recent studies (Reid, 2010; Planté, 2003), this contribution deals with the place of the feminine authors in the French literary canon and with the status of author. This political question also raises questions about the corpus’ construction of the classics of the literature which are taught and serve as references in literary studies. If women represent approximately 50 % of the world’s population, they are far from proportionally representing in literature. Thus, the scarcity of women in Literary History will be at the center of our preoccupation, and we will endeavor to show how societies have influenced the representation of women in literature, and how feminine authors have denunced the image of inequalities between men and women in their works.

The author investigates how James Joyce stylizes the space in his novel Ulysses for drama. For this purpose he carries out a comparative analysis of some episodes in this book. This analysis leads to the conclusion that Joyce transposes some dramatic genres and specifically dramatic writing techniques, especially associated with August Strindberg. Kozłowski emphasizes the dramatic character of some motifs that create spatial conditions in Joyce’s novel. Furthermore, he compares these motifs with the literary works of the greatest modern dramatists.

The work at hand deals with the art of orations in Jan Bielski’s Ćwiczenia krasomówsko-prawne. The analysis focused on the author›s remarks concerning rhetoric, which are to be found in the foreword, and in selected “juridical cases”. Rhetoric is perceived as helpful field in getting honours. Moreover, it is useful in unmasking the falsehood and reconciling antagonists. On the other hand, rhetoric is also shown as the “craft” which can serve vile, godless cells and which, “uncontrollable”, causes the disaster. Bielski’s Ćwiczenia... made young people aware, that acquaintance of rhetoric has a real influence on the outside world.

Or did he depart from the arisen rules and thus his characters were named by individual feature? The periphrasis of the following questions like the look of the character, personality, the model of love and the docere function realised by some heros help in solving the problem. Six lyrics Judyta, Tressa and Gazela, Wirginia, Syloret, Argenida and Lidia attributet to Potocki were this way analysed.

The works by Dobraczyński, once a very popular Polish catholic author have become almost completely forgotten. There are only two novels still known among readers: Listy Nikodema i Cień Ojca. The aim of this article is to remind one of the forgotten novels Przyszedłem rozłączyć... which presents the hagiographic trend, especially important in Dobraczyński’s works. Despite some artistic inadequacies, the novel still seems interesting because of the depiction of holiness and problems emerging from it, which are dubious, although the author’s overall tendency was to be explicit.

The paper contains an analysis of the genealogy of 19th-century Polish research in the field of literary history. My inquiry contains a comparison between literary research in Germany and in Poland. From this point of view, literary history was an important factor in the process of building a modern nation. Furthermore, literary historians also played the role of indispensable authorities on the cultural past and present: in Germany as professors of universities, and in Poland during the partitions as intellectuals and writers.

The present article examines the beginning of the recipe for hare meat (leporis vero si novellae […]) preserved in Chapter 13 of the dietetic treatise De observatione ciborum written in the first half of the 6th cent. by the Byzantine physician Anthimus. In the initial part of the study, the author briefly discusses key events in the doctor’s life, explaining the circumstances which brought him to the royal court of the Frankish ruler, Theuderic. Next, the author analyses Anthimus’ competence in the field of dietetics and proves that he composed his treatise in line with ancient and Byzantine materia medica. The key part of the article scrutinises the most popular methods of preparing hare meat according to ancient gastronomical literature (Ἡδυπάθεια by Archestratus of Gela, De re coquinaria) and compares them with Anthimus’ recommendations. This allows the author to reconstruct the culinary techniques that Anthimus most probably proposed be applied in the preparation of hare meat. The author concludes that Anthimus’ treatise is a clear example of the practical application of both dietetics and materia medica in culinary practices performed in the physician’s lifetime.

Opis:
Czesław Miłosz’s poetry displays two reverberating topics which may be defined as two contradictory existence and world experiences. One of those is admiration for the beauty of the world and awe consequent upon capturing the simultaneous existence of individual entities (Awe), whilst the other is the topic of lack of fulfilment, torment, the feeling of lack of authenticity, blame, and shame (This). Miłosz depicts his “I” (represented by various personae), split between individual consciousness, a strong sense of individuality, distinct from the commune of ordinary people (a strand salient in the pre-war volume Three Winters), as well as nurturing a feeling of strong bonds with the society. The poet’s self-reflection holds for both topics, while the autobiographic discourse is orientated to the questions about the functions of poetic language and about the status and sense of poetry, thereby addressing self-topicality.

Opis:
The article presents three little-known poems of the Lithuanian poet and diarist of the first half of the nineteenth century, Gabriela Puzynina. The seemingly trivial subject related to knitting needlework and conventional form of the poems gain a new value, if considered in the context of sociology and anthropology literature. The analysis, beyond the traditional genre study, are subject to the following issues: the poet as a distinct entity and her membership to women’s environment, the process of building the women’s identity, everyday life and its literary reflection, material culture in the comparison with the anthropocentric approach of the past. There is also raised a question about the way of reception such an occasional literature today. According to the author of the article, reading Puzynina’s poems only as “the literary trifles” wrongfully condemned them to oblivion, yet they are interesting and credible testimony of historical time and a medium for exploring the individual human life from the past.

This article presents the image of a spiritual wedding between soul-Bride and Divine Bridegroom which is featured in anonymous meditations from the XVII century. They are bunched in manuscript form and stored in the archives of the Sisters of St. Norbert’s Order in Cracow. Therefore, it is proper to make the thesis that the author of this manuscript belonged to this abbey. The primary origin of these meditations is The Song of Songs which shows the special way mystics merge with God. This article also reveals meditations about ”spiritual marriage” that contain visible influences of the Fathers of Church and Żywoty świętych of Piotr Skarga. All these influences are evident not only about the authoress erudition but most of all about her need of strong effect, by means of suggestive images of figures, for the attitude of practitioners of meditations. With the aid of the idea of mutual love between Divine Bridegroom and human being-Bride, meditations were presented standing before God demanding from man spiritual transformation and pose of the human being who desires to internally change yourself for Him.
