Polish literature and culture of the 20th century
Opis:
The article is dedicated to artistic vulgarity as a form of freedom of art manifesto. The author explains that using obscene and drastic language which breaks social taboos (particularly sexual ones), has often been caused by the need for artistic freedom. This phenomenon can be observed especially in the so-called communist era (1944–1989) but most importantly in the period of political system’s transformation after 1989. By the example of literature, film, theatre and broadly defined popular culture the author analyzes this process, paying special attention to various ‘traps’ in the usage of vulgar language and artistic expressions, as well as the ultimate high art’s retreat from that strategy.

The article above presents the importance of Breslaw poet, actor and reciter Karl von Holtei on shaping local identity of Breslaw and Silesian inhabitants as well as his place in the local memory. After second edition of his Schlesiche Gedichte (1850) written in local dialect, and especially after his long artistic journey around Silesia (1860–1861) and permanent return to Breslaw (1865) Holtei won respect his compatriots. He became very well known and popular in Breslaw. Streets, squares and other topographic buildings in other Silesian towns and cities were named after Holtei already during his lifetime. Postcards with his portraits were published and just after his death, a monument was unveiled. After 1945, Holtei became a very important identification figure for expelled Silesian people in West Germany. However, Holtei was forgotten for many years in Polish Silesia, even though he wrote many pro-Polish pieces including Der alte Feldherr a drama about Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko. A breakthrough came only in the end of 20th century when Holtei’s importance for Polish-German relationship rediscovered and appreciated. A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the house that he had lived in, his bust was placed in Town Hall and secondary school in Oborniki Śląskie was given Holtei’s name.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to outline the guidelines of the interdisciplinary course in comparative literature, given at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The subject of the series of lectures is the relation between Italian literature and different branches of art, in context of their cultural references. The strategies of sensibilization of the audience both to the problem of „sister arts” and to the Italian literature and language themselves are explained. In addition, the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of reception of Italian literature in European culture is mentioned as one of the aims of the lecture. Moreover, main problems of the course, such as themes of reintepretation of Italian classics in visual arts, music, cinema and theatre, are discussed on the background of „classroom dynamics” which characterize the group of students with different knowledge of Italian language and different cultural competences.

The purpose of this publication is the interpretation of the song of Jacek Kaczmarski titledJacob wrestling with the angel which shows the speci city of the poet’s view of the biblical theme. In the rst part of the article, I discuss the gure of the Patriarch Jacob in the Bible and culture. Then I present the patriarch’s wrestling with an unknown opponent as it is shown in Jewish and Christian commentaries. In the interpretation of Kaczmarski’s song, I draw attention to the di eren- ces and similarities with the Scriptures and with Jewish and Christian interpretations. Kaczmarski creatively reinterprets the biblical theme. The song does not follow Jewish interpretations which see the unknown opponent as a guardian angel of Esau, archangel Michael or Satan. Nor does it follow Christian interpretations (psychological, allegorical, spiritual, mystical). The poem is close to these comments (Jewish and Christian), which in the wrestling opponent see God in the form of an angel and a shepherd. Kaczmarski’s interpretation is unique, for in his poem the main purpose of the struggle is freedom – an overriding value in human life. The winner turns out to be a crippled Jacob. The weak man wins with God because he dared to ght for freedom.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt at showing – through the prism of autobiographical reflection – the location of tradition, as understood by Wilhelmina Zyndram‑Kościałkowska (1844–1926), a translator, writer and literary critic. The notion of location is understood by the author as a particular, restricted, time‑spatial reservoir of meanings, perceived in a broader perspective, that is as a component of a larger whole. The location of tradition is a segment and stage concerning a problem residuum of meanings in culture and history, as well as in the history of thought, which has been located in the space of individual biography of Kościałkowska, constructed with an old hand of the writer and placed as a component of diagnoses in her contemporaneity. The research material includes manuscripts (notebooks with memories and other types of autobiographical archives), deposited in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius (Lietuvos Valstybės Istorijos Archyvas). The author shows various ways of conducting dialogue by the critic with the old tradition (history, politics, culture, portraits of people, literature, art, family history) and the meaning of the location of tradition in the process of recording oneself and one’s contemporaneity by Kościałkowska.

Artykuł proponuje bliższe spojrzenie na zakres, konteksty i metody badań nad literaturą i kulturą polską i ich nauczaniem na wybranych niemieckich uniwersytetach. Autorki, opierając się na własnych doświadczeniach dydaktycznych na kierunkach studiów licencjackich i magisterskich z komponentem polonistycznym, po pierwsze, określają specyfikę polonistycznych studiów literaturoznawczych w Niemczech na tle uwarunkowań kulturowych i polityczno-ekonomicznych. Po drugie, prezentują problematykę oraz strukturę wybranych zajęć, jakie prowadziły. Wyjaśniają powody, dla których określone teksty i ramy interpretacyjne wydały im się najbardziej odpowiednie, oraz wymieniają najważniejsze wyzwania, z jakimi mierzyć się muszą słuchacze i wykładowcy, w tym kwestie strukturalne, finansowe i kulturowe. Artykuł dowodzi, że różnice między polonistyką krajową a niemiecką mogą być inspirujące dla nich obu. Pozytywnym aspektem niemieckiego modelu jest zwłaszcza szersze, komparatystyczne (głównie, lecz nie tylko slawistyczne) spojrzenie na literaturę i kulturę polską.
The paper examines the scope, various contexts of, and approaches to Polish literature and culture at selected German universities. Drawing on their teaching experience in bachelor courses and master’s programmes that include Polish Language and Literature, the authors first outline the specificity of Polish studies in Germany against its cultural, political, and economic background. Secondly, they highlight the focus and structure of selected courses that they have taught and explain the reasons for choosing certain texts and approaches. In the next step, they identify crucial challenges faced by both the students and faculty. The paper argues that differences between Polish studies in Poland and in Germany can be stimulating for both. A particularly positive aspect of the German model is that it offers a broader, comparative (mainly, but not only, Slavic) perspective on Polish literature and culture.

Given the historical proximity of Polish and Jewish groups, it is possible to identify their mutual interconnectedness. This paper presents one such example of the stereotypical Jewish Mother, in Israel known as a “Polish woman,” both in its sociohistorical and cultural aspect. Drawing from the theory of gendered and stereotypical representations, author traces a changing portrayal of the Jewish Mother on her way from the ghetto penury to middle-class affluence. Embodied by popular characters such as Molly Goldberg, the Jewish mother also became a target of bitter criticism, best rendered in the depiction of Sophie Portnoy-the iconic protagonist of Philip Roth’s novel Portnoy’s Complaint (1967). Feminist re-readings of this popular stereotype offer an interesting insight into its construction and try to explain its viability.

The aim of the present study is to examine the extent to which French philology students' informal learning – in the area of multimodal literacies and leisure activities – reinforces the gains in French literature and French history and culture courses through creative mediation. We report on an experiment conducted in the years 2020-2022 in five online courses at the French Philology department of the University of Wrocław during the Covid-19 pandemic. In these courses, students were expected to personally mediate the texts or content studied in class and present them on a group Facebook site. The students' projects are classified according to two criteria (intersemiotic and intrasemiotic mediation; mediation of form and content) and prove that the involvement of informally acquired knowledge and skills not only developed the students' creativity, but also promoted interpretative processes by anchoring the formal learning of the course in personal experience.

During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Obradović was the first to point out the importance of translation to the Serbs. He advocated the development of literature and culture modelled after more advanced cultures and based on the translation of useful works; he also believed that translation must adapt to the nature of target language. His views particularly influenced same writers from the region of Croatia, namely Pavle Solarić and Jovan Došenović, who were friends also. Solarić translated philosophical, geographical, historical and other documents, while Došenović, under the influence of others, compiled an arithmetic book, as well as the first collection of lyric poetry in recent Serbian literature, with the use of the imitatio procedure too. Translation influenced the genre, subject, style, and especially the linguistic development of Serbian literature.

Maternji jezik nije samo jezik komunikacije, već i čuvar tradicije i kulture. U njemu su sačuvane sve prethodne jezičke epohe i ukupno kulturno pamćenje jednog naroda. Tako je i školski predmet Srpski jezik važan za izgrađivanje kulturnog i nacionalnog identiteta učenika i najvažniji predmet u osnovnoškolskom obrazovanju. Neophodno je da se posebna pažnja u organizaciji, planiranju i izvođenju nastave poklanja svim onim elementima nacionalne kulture koji su ugrađeni u jezik i, posebno, u književna dela. Tek tako književnost može u potpunosti da vrši svoju obrazovnu, jezičku, estetsku u identitetsku ulogu. Zato se u ovom radu razmatraju sadržaji srpske kulture u nastavnim programima za mlađe razrede osnovne škole. Polazeći od novih programa za prva četiri razred osnovne škole tumačeni su zadaci, ishodi, uputstva i propisani sadržaji u koje su ugrađeni različiti slojevi srpske kulture. Cilj istraživanja jeste da se sagleda prisustvo, rad i stvaralačko delovanje kulture u jeziku i propisanim književnim tekstovima. Tumačena su dela koja potiču iz narodne i savremene književnosti i pripadaju različitim žanrovima (epske narodne pesme, pripovetke, savremena poezija za decu). Zaključuje se da postoje napomene, usmerenja i brojni konkretni sadržaji koji u prvom ciklusu školovanja skreću pažnju na raznolikost i bogatstvo uverenja, ideja, obrazaca ponašanja i duhovnih tvorevina koje pripadaju srpskoj (nacionalnoj) kulturi.
Mother tongue is not only the language of communication, but also the guardian of tradition and culture. It preserves all earlier linguistic periods and an overall cultural memory of a nation. For this reason, the school subject of the Serbian Language is important for building students’ national identity and it is indeed the most important school subject in primary education. In the processes of organizing, planning, and teaching, a due attention must be given to the elements of national culture that are built in the language and, specifically, in literary works. It is only in this way that literature can fully perform its linguistic, aesthetic, and identity role. This paper looks at the Serbian culture content in the early primary school curricula. Taking the new curricula for the first four grades of primary school as a starting point, the authors analyse the objectives, outcomes, instructions, and the prescribed content in which different layers of Serbian culture are incorporated. The goal of the research is to examine the representation, effects, and a creative impact of culture in the Serbian Language and the literary texts included in the compulsory reading lists. The paper analyses the works belonging to national and contemporary literature, as well as to different genres (epic national poetry, short stories, and contemporary children’s literature). Our conclusion is that the examined material contains the notes, guidelines, and many contents that in the first cycle of primary education draw attention to the diversity and richness of beliefs, ideas, behavioural patterns, and spiritual heritage of Serbian (national) culture.

The article presents changes in attitude towards popular literature and culture in last thirty years, in which despised Cinderella became the almighty queen of the book market, and dichotomy in studying works of “high” and “low” culture gradually disappears, what may be seen also in the role of “mixed” genres. Analyzing methods of working on such works and reminding overviews of research on such works included in her book The Third One, the author critically emphasizes the impact of English-language researches on the present shape of Polish researches on popular phenomena. She also calls for taking up literature that lies between “high” and “low” culture.

Serbo-Croatian discussions around the national affiliation of the Dubrovnik tradition
Opis:
The article attempts to discuss the status of Dubrovnik and its literary and cultural tradition in 19th- and 20th-century discourses in the frame of Serbian literary history. The starting point for the presented considerations will be the opinion of Jovan Deretić, who, perceiving the Dubrovnik tradition as “borderline”, referred to it as “a tradition of secondary importance” for the Serbian culture and literature system. In his opinion, it could not have become for the Serbs what it had become for Croatian literature, that is, “the central national tradition”. The text will discuss different points of view (both “internal” and “external”) on the “location” and importance of the city and its traditions in the context of ongoing discussions on the identity of Dubrovnik. The t exts of the n ineteenth-century authors (Đ. Nikolajević, I. Stojanović, L. Vojnović) and twentieth-century authors (J. Skerlić, P. Popović, M. Pantić) will be analyzed. The framework of the article will be determined by contemporary reflection on this subject (Z. Bojović, I. Arsić, S. Stipčević).
Artykuł podejmuje próbę omówienia statusu Dubrownika i jego tradycji literackiej i kulturowej w XIX- i XX-wiecznych dyskursach w obrębie serbskiej historii literatury. Punktem wyjścia zaprezentowanych rozważań jest opinia Jovana Dereticia, który, postrzegając tradycję dubrownicką jako „graniczną”, określał ją mianem „tradycji o znaczeniu wtórnym i drugorzędnym” dla serbskiego systemu kultury i literatury. W jego opinii nie mogła więc stać się dla Serbów tym, czym stała się dla piśmiennictwa chorwackiego, czyli „centralną tradycją narodową”. W tekście omawiam różne punkty widzenia (zarówno wewnętrzne, dubrownickie, jak i zewnętrzne) w odniesieniu do „położenia” i znaczenie miasta oraz jego tradycji w kontekście prowadzonych dyskusji na temat tożsamości Dubrownika. Analizie zostały poddane teksty autorów XIX-wiecznych (Đ. Nikolajević, I. Stojanović, L. Vojnović) i XX-wiecznych (J. Skerlić, P. Popović, M. Pantić). Ramy artykułu wyznacza współczesna refleksja na ten temat (Z. Bojović, I. Arsić, S. Stipčević).
