    Composed in 1919 as a rebuke to Bolshevik rule, Alexander Chayanov’s utopian story about a future, peasant-dominated Russia has fascinated scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. This article provides a critical overview of the Russian- and English-language scholarship on Chayanov’s peasant utopia that has emerged over the last three decades. The intellectual and ideological contexts in which the text has been situated are explored and compared. The article also discusses how the utopia has been understood in ideological and political terms, and how scholars have wrestled with ambiguities arising from its relativism, parodic qualities and potentially dystopian elements.

    Opis:
    Durant le premier XIXe siècle, la contredanse, constituée de déplacements et d’interactions entre tous les danseurs n’importe leur place de départ, abolit les contraintes d’une société divisée en classes. Dans Édouard (1825), Claire de Duras compare le moment des contredanses, pendant un bal parisien de l’Ancien Régime, à une échappée vers l’Angleterre, où l’ascension sociale semble réalisable. De plus, la danse crée un espace où l’héroïne peut franchir les barrières entravant les membres de son sexe et empêchant le mariage par amour. George Sand, dans Le Compagnon du Tour de France (1840), contraste la possibilité de l’amour entre des personnages de classes différentes lors des contredanses avec l’impossibilité de ces unions dans la vie quotidienne. En établissant un non-lieu, les contredanses de ces romans produisent des moments éphémères où l’égalité et la liberté règnent, pourtant, hors de la danse, les hiérarchies sociales demeurent rigides.
    During the first half of the 19th century, contradances, made up of displacements and interactions between all the dancers starting in different places, abolish the obligations imposed by a society divided into classes. In Édouard (1825), Claire de Duras compares the performance of contradances, during an ancien régime ball, to fleeing to England, where social ascension seems possible. George Sand, in Le Compagnon du Tour de France (1840), contrasts the possibility of romantic relationships across classes during contradances with the impossibility of these unions in everyday life. By establishing a non-place, these fictional dances create ephemeral moments during which equality and freedom reign; however, off the dance floor, social hierarchies remain rigid.

    For an abstract in English, scroll downPrzemysław GóreckiAdam Mickiewicz University in PoznańPoland An Aesthetic Reflection on Kappa by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa Abstract: The article is an attempt of reading the modernistic short story of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, a Japanese “father of short story”, in terms of aesthetics. The subject of this analysis is the Polish translation of the work Kappa, also known in Poland under the title In the land of Aquarius, made by Mikołaj Melanowicz. The story shows a phantasmagoric visit to the strange country (peopled by anthropomorphic creatures) and some sober observations of this disturbingly atypical land made by the main character. Due to the multitude of culturally recognizable themes referring to the history of Gulliver, the work bears remarkable signs of anti-utopia. My analysis takes on the themes of the story that are important from the point of view of this branch of philosophy and on its symbolic dimension with its immersion in the tradition of Japanese aesthetics. Basing my interpretation on the critical revision of the basic assumptions of the Japanese aesthetics school and on the close reading of the two surfaces of the work (literal and symbolic), I consider how the text functions in a philosophical way. The article focuses both on the literally aesthetic level of expression (descriptions of the presented world) as well as on the aesthetics of narration and the way of constructing the text. Przedmiotem analizy czynię polski przekład utworu W krainie wodników, znanego w Polsce również pod tytułem Kappy, dokonany przez Mikołaja Melanowicza. Historia opowiada o fantasmagorycznej wizycie w kraju antropomorficznych istot oraz o trzeźwych obserwacjach niepokojąco nietypowej krainy czynionych przez głównego bohatera. Ze względu na mnogość rozpoznawalnych kulturowo wątków nawiązujących do historii o Guliwerze, utwór nosi znamiona antyutopii. Moja analiza podejmuje wątki opowiadania istotne z punktu widzenia tej gałęzi filozofii oraz jego symboliczny wymiar z jego zanurzeniem w tradycji japońskiej estetyki. Opierając swoją interpretację na krytycznej rewizji podstawowych założeń szkoły japońskiej estetyki i bliskim odczytaniu dwu płaszczyzn utworu (literalnej i symbolicznej), przyglądam się sposobowi filozoficznego funkcjonowania tekstu.     Uwe Johnson was perceived before 1989 exclusively as a writer of the division of Germany. Born in Pomerania (Kamień Pomorski), he spent his childhood and early youth in Mecklenburg. After obtaining his university degree in German philology in the German Democratic Republic, he moved to West Berlin. In the same year he published his first novel Mutmaßungen über Jakob (the Polish edition Domniemania w sprawie Jakuba appeared in 2008), which besides the reflection on the division of Germany in the context of the Cold War, dividing Europe into two political camps, extensively describes his holidays he spent until 10 years of age in Darzewice near Wolin. It was, looking through the prism of the author’s whole biography, the most happy period in his life and therefore a point of reference for forming a worldview in a bipolar world of the ideological indoctrination. The characters of his novels written in prose, like Jakob Abs, the main character of the novel mentioned above, hail from Pomerania. The article provides an analysis of determinants of the author’s regional identity from the perspective of self-reflection in which a central position occupies the category of small homeland as understood in the theory of concrete utopia (Ernst Bloch), as well that of spiritual affinity (Johann Wolfgang Goethe), and spiritual homelessness (Siegfried Kracauer).
    Uwe Johnson był przed 1989 rokiem postrzegany wyłącznie jako pisarz „podziału Niemiec”. Urodzony na Pomorzu (Kamień Pomorski), okres dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości spędził w Mecklemburgii. Po studiach germanistycznych w NRD przeniósł się w 1959 roku do Berlina Zachodniego. W tym samym roku ukazała się jego pierwsza powieść Mutmaßungen über Jakob (pol. Domniemiania o Jakubie, 2008), która – oprócz refleksji nad podziałem Niemiec w kontekście klimatu zimnej wojny dzielącej Europę na dwa obozy polityczne – szeroko opisuje wakacyjny czas spędzany do dziesiątego roku życia w Darzewicach koło Wolina. Jest to, patrząc przez pryzmat całej biografii autora, najszczęśliwszy okres w jego życiu i z tego powodu – punkt odniesienia do ukształtowania się światopoglądu w dwubiegunowym świecie indoktrynacji ideologicznej. Bohaterowie jego utworów pisanych prozą wywodzą się, podobnie jak Jakob Abs, główny bohater z wyżej wymienionej powieści, również z Pomorza. Tekst ten poświęcony jest analizie determinantów tożsamości regionalnej pisarza z perspektywy samorefleksji, w której kategoria małej ojczyzny w rozumieniu teorii konkretnej utopii (Ernst Bloch), zajmuje miejsce centralne – pokrewieństwa duchowego (Johann Wolfgang Goethe) oraz duchowej bezdomności (Siegfried Kracauer).
